What does it mean to be a community? From the early days of the LJCC, it
has meant finding a place of belonging, a place to be with those who share
the same values and history, a place to find camaraderie in coming together
with a shared vision. In our current society, community is o!en defined a
li"le differently, with so much of what we call community taking place in
front of a screen, with no real connec%on to the warmth of a voice speaking
our name, eyes gree%ng us in recogni%on, arms held out to offer an embrace.
Historically, membership in a Jewish community has demanded a sense of
shared responsibility for one another, the mitzvah of caring for those mem-
bers of the community who are in need, as well as coming together to cele-
brate life’s joys. This is the community that we strive for, yet it is not some-
thing that can be achieved by only a few.
There are many opportuni%es coming up for you to par%cipate in this sense
of community. Come to Shabbat services and stay to visit with friends or get
to know someone new. Show up for the Blintz rolling on Oct. 7. Join in the
conversa%on at Adult Ed on Oct. 18. Celebrate a baby naming on October 20.
Come out to learn and write together in the “Wri%ng Jewish” workshop and
symposium on October 21. Help us feed the hungry at LINK on Oct. 25. Find
out how you can help with the Blintz Brunch on November 4. As LJCC
member Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg wrote so beau%fully recently, “...we can’t
sustain posive change in our lives without the help of one another. By open-
ing our eyes to the wonder of how we can show up for each other and our-
selves, we may just find the right steps, words, breaths, and sllnesses to
arrive right where we are, in the promised land of this beauful life even
while trudging through the desert of brokenness, injusce, heartbreak, and
grief.” (carynmirriamgoldberg.com)

Rachel and I recently adopted an older, blind
dachshund. While watching her (the dachshund, not Ra-
chel) stumble around the house, bonking into furniture,
the other dogs, and us, it occurred to me that the read-
ers of this column might like some informa%on about
our animal companions and adversaries.
An animal in Yiddish is a khaye or a bal-khay. A
dog is a hunt, and three dachshunds are dray vursht-
hint, or the fourth plague—noxious beasts—visited upon
Pharaoh. A cat is a katz, a male cat is a koter, and The
Cat in the Hat is Di katz der payats (the cat [is] a clown),
a book translated by Sholem Berger. A mouse is a moyz,
and three blind mice are dray blinde mayz.
Down on the farm, a cow is a ku, a horse is a
ferd, a duck is a katshke, and a chicken is a hun. A pig is a
khazer; my late father would refer to greasy, yucky sub-
stances as khazeray, which I much later learned was "pig
-stuff".
A fly is a flig, a flea is a floy, a mosquito is a ko-
mar, and a spider is a shpin. And, just to cover our bases,
a bird is a foygl and a dinosaur is a dinozaver. (I
acknowledge that some of these creatures are more
than or less than four-legged.)
As you would guess, many, many proverbs
involve animals. Here is a very small selec%on:
A hunt vos bilt, bayst nit. A dog that is barking
doesn't bite.
Az di katz geyt avek hobn di mayz mekhaye.
When the cat is away, the mice have a good %me.
Er iz shoyn geven oyfn ferd un untern ferd. He has
been both on the horse and under the horse. [He's expe-
rienced both good %mes and bad.]
Az me lozt a khazer in gortn arayn, ken men im
azoy gikh nit poter vern. A!er you let a pig get in your
garden, you can't get rid of him just as easily.
Az men hot aroysgeganvet di ku, makht men der-
nakh di shtal tsu. A!er someone stole the cow, they
locked the barn.

Help Us Feed the Hungry!
Come join us the fourth Thursday of every month
as we take our turn at the Lawrence Interdenomi-
na%onal Nutri%onal Kitchen (LINK) at the First
Chris%an Church downtown. A dedicated crew of
regulars has been providing casseroles, fruit,
dessert, and more for many years, but we always
need more help, especially with serving and clean-
ing up. Prep and food delivery start at 11:30, serv-
ing from 1 to 2, and cleanup from noon to 2:30 or
so. Look for the link to our LINK SignUp page sent in
email and in weekly announcements. And, as an
extra bonus — it’s fun!

LJCC Yiskor List Updates
Please let us know if there were issues with names
that were read (or le! out) at the Yiskor service on
Yom Kippur. If you would like to review the current
Yiskor list to make sure your loved ones are listed,
contact Marty in the LJCC office.
Dillons Rewards Program
We currently have 20 households signed up to benefit

way to benefit the LJCC at no cost to you! If you haven’t
yet done so, visit the Dillons website at

have your purchases from Dillons and Kwik Shop benefit
the LJCC. Select Lawrence Jewish Community and click

The LJCC leadership took a bold step this summer: they
dismantled the Religious School. No longer do our chil-
dren gather on Sunday mornings for school, no longer
do they sit at tables and desks in an otherwise near-
empty building. Nope. Now, we gather for Shabbat.
Children and parents together, along with all who seek
a Shabbos minyan, spend a morning celebra%ng the day
of rest. There’s not much about it that feels like
“school.” It’s a Shabbat experience – and all are wel-
come.
Families of children age three to seventh grade are par-
%cularly invited to a"end the Shabbat morning experi-
ence and worship the first Saturday morning of each
month.
9:15 a.m. Come early to grab coffee, cocoa, or a
morning snack!
9:30 a.m. The morning kicks off with music and stories
to set the tone and theme for the day.
9:50 a.m. Kids scamper off for age-appropriate, experi-
en%al programs on the chosen theme, while parents
refresh their coffee and se"le in for a relaxed discussion
of issues surrounding Jewish families and childhood.
10:20 a.m. Regroup!
10:30 a.m. Families join the whole community for
Shabbat morning worship. A!er the first aliyah, kids
gather for relevant and – again! – age-appropriate, ex-
perien%al programs.
11:45 a.m. Potluck Kiddush Luncheon
But this monthly Shabbat experience can hardly stand
alone. Rather, it should serve as a launch pad for fami-
lies as we exercise tradi%ons and create new rituals in
our own homes and as a community.
Weekly Hebrew tutoring for children 3rd
grade and
above, as well as b’nai mitzvah prepara%on are s%ll vital
components of the educa%on program at the LJCC with
more informa%on to follow in the coming weeks.
Shana Tova to all!

“Writing Jewish: Midrash, Myth and Miracles” is the second annual offering of the “Jews in the Mid-west” speaker series. This one-day writing workshop plus symposium celebrates Jewish literature and crea-tive writing in the heartland.
For a complete schedule, please visit: https://jewishstudies.ku.edu/2018symposium
The morning writing workshop from 10am-12pm is hosted by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg (2009-13 Kansas Poet Laureate). Writing our own midrash – the Hebrew tradition of re-visioning traditional texts from the To-rah and beyond – allows us to get into the control room of cultural and religious dominant narratives to re-script how we live and re-vision who we are. Using innovative and short writing prompts based on poetic meanderings through midrash, you’ll find your way into unearthing and inventing individual and collective stories that can lead to greater freedom and resilience.
The afternoon symposium from 1:45pm – 5:00pm will feature talks by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg (2009-13 Kansas Poet Laureate), Renee Perelmutter (Associate Professor of Jewish studies and Slavic languages and literatures at KU), and Rena Rossner (author, and literary agent based in Israel).
Both programs are free. The symposium is open to the public, but the writing workshop requires a reserva-tion. RSVP to the writing workshop here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/writing-workshop-with-caryn-
mirriam-goldberg-tickets-47568657134
Lunch is provided for participants in the writing workshop. If you need a Kosher lunch, please email [email protected] or call (785) 864-4664 before October 5.
