We’re just getting into Shamal season in the UAE, usually we’re hit worse in March and April just before the real summer hear kicks in but if German architect Sara Shafiq

‘Urban Jungle’ proposal was put in place perhaps the effects of the sandy filled skies would be lessened? Read all about her proposal on page 26, which she prepared as part of her thesis project for her Masters program in Landscape Architecture and regional planning at the university of Applied Sciences Osnabrueck in Germany.

From the UAE desert to the Saudi desert, landscape architect Marlon van Maastricht and architectural designer Vincent Engel give us an insight into their working careers thus far having been part of Saudi’s evolving landscape industry over the past nine years. (Page 18).

We also have a special focus on projects from Singapore and China.

We›d love to hear from you so please feel free to share your feedback with us: [email protected]

His Excellency Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, UAE Minister of Environment, kicked off the Dubai leg of the Waste

Free Environment (WFE) campaign in Dubai’s Mina Al Hamriya.

This is the second edition of the WFE campaign which is taking place in eight other cities in all the GCC countries. In 2013, the event saw the participation of over 2,500 volunteers who collected 10,000 kilograms of waste across six cities in the region.

“Since sustainability is a key component of the UAE’s vision for the future, conservation of the environment is a crucial step in ensuring the country’s future,” said H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad. “Community awareness campaigns, such as this one, are tangible examples of collaborative efforts between corporations and the community which can bring about positive changes.”

The event saw a large number of volunteers from schools, divers and local communities as well as representatives from major petrochemical companies volunteers from around the region clearing litter from beaches and gathering plastic waste for recycling.

The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) hopes to highlight complacent attitudes toward proper waste disposal which are tarnishing the image of plastics products, a major part of the region’s economy and both economically

valuable and sustainable. The association is a signatory to the global “Declarations for Solutions on Marine Litter”, where participants actively collaborate with governments, non-governmental organizations and the general public on sustainable waste management solutions. The WFE is a key component to GPCA’s contribution to this declaration.

Analysts have estimated that out of the 80 million tons of waste generated in the GCC each year, 33% constitutes municipal solid waste. The percentage of plastic waste is put at 26 million tons per year due to the high consumption of consumer products.

“As members of a community, we all have a part to play in ensuring that future generations have access to an environment where they can live, grow and flourish,” said Dr. Abdulwahab Al Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA. “Every single member of the society can contribute to cleaning up our environment—by engaging in a simple act of proper disposal of litter.”

Dr. Sadoun explained that the presence of plastic litter in the marine and desert environments of the Gulf are largely due to irresponsible disposal of plastics waste combined with poor waste management, a lack of regulatory framework and insufficient recycling infrastructure. “WFE is a campaign that is engaged in the 4Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover so that these pressing environmental issues can be resolved.”

WFE is being organized by GPCA in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Environment & Water and in conjunction with the Tadweer, a leading provider of waste management and recycling services in Dubai. In addition to collecting and segregating the waste collected during WFE, Tadweer will also develop a report on the waste collected during the campaign.

Real estate players are racing to give Dubai’s properties a ‘green makeover’ with its own unique identity -- in

the same way that Venice in Italy is famous for its ‘underwater streets’ or canals, while Cape Town is famous for its hilltop houses overlooking the sea.

After weeks of heightened suspense and anticipation, the wait is finally over as the final list of participants in the first-ever Dubai International Garden Competition have been announced. The list was unveiled at a VIP event that brought together senior representatives from the event patron Dubai Municipality, event partners and hopeful participants.

Participating companies are as follows, Mirak Irrigation & Landscaping, Toscana Landscaping & Pools, Jenny Flowers, Spring Rose Landscaping, Waho & Vogue, Miracle Garden, Terra Verde the Landscape Solution, Greenable Landscapes, Orchid Garden Centre.

The Middle East’s biggest gardening showcase will be held from April 3rd to 6th at The Venue, Downtown Dubai at the foot of Burj Khalifa -- the world’s tallest building, developed by Emaar Properties. The event is eagerly anticipated by real estate investors looking to give their properties a makeover in time for Expo 2020, while boosting the value of their properties through stylish landscaping; as well as players in the tourism and leisure markets.

About Dubai International Garden Competition (DIGC)

Dubai International Garden Competition (DIGC) is the UAE’s first landscaping competition that has been specially created to showcase the beauty of Dubai’s gardening masterpieces to the region and the wider world. It brings together the world’s best landscapers, architects, designers, botanists, engineers, scientists, real estate experts and other professionals. The first edition will take place from 3rd - 6th April 2014 at The Venue, Downtown Dubai at the foot of Burj Khalifa. The competition is facilitated by Purelife Events, Conferences & Exhibitions, under the patronage of Dubai Municipality.

The participants include architects, botanists, designers, engineers, garden manicurists and horticulturalists among others. A recurring theme among the entries is the emphasis on eco-friendly solutions ideal for Dubai’s arid climate, balancing natural beauty with innovation.

According to Nasser Khan, CEO of the competition organizers Purelife: “Our judges from the UK have reassured us that in all their years of judging competitions worldwide, these are some of the most stunning concepts they have ever encountered. Purelife believes that this creativity is inspired by Dubai’s reputation as a ‘City of the Impossible’ that touches the sky. Visitors will be even more astounded when these concepts are brought to life right before their eyes. Although the event is only four days long, the concepts they inspire will live on until Expo 2020 and beyond.”

Engineer Taleb Jalfar, Director of Parks & Horticulture Department at Dubai Municipality, expressed his optimism about the upcoming

With sustainability being a cornerstone of key national projects and government policy,

Dubai will play host to the Middle East Smart Landscape Summit 2014, taking place on 6th and 7th of May 2014 at Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa. The Summit will once again attract over 400 senior landscape architects, government authorities, urban planners, developers, environmental specialists and contractors from across the GCC.

High on the agenda at this years’ Summit will be the new landscaping projects that are being undertaken by both the public and private sectors. As the host city of the World Expo 2020, Dubai is aiming to set new benchmarks for sustainability through a range of innovative initiatives, with the event expecting to attract over 25 million visitors. Deutsche Bank have estimated that as much as Dh157 billion in infrastructure projects will need to be developed in preparation for the Expo.

Dubai Municipality last year announced the development of Dh17 million worth of new parks including a rebuild of Satwa Park which will become the first in the emirate to run without electrical power. The

city also initiated the use of solar energy to irrigate landscaped roundabouts using a solar pumping system aimed at reducing carbon emissions and cost.

Work on the Dh2 billion Dubai Canal project is now underway, and major private developments like the Dubai Pearl and Sustainable City by Diamond Developers are all incorporating sustainable landscaping design and technology like energy-efficient lighting, water and waste management systems into plans to minimize the environmental impact.

Learning from the experience of international experts will be key to the success of many of the major projects planned. Award-winning landscape architect Professor Jie Hu (China) will be one of the keynote presenters at the Middle East Smart Landscaping Summit 2014, showcasing his work as the Lead Designer of the Olympic Forest Park built for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Now the Vice President of Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning & Design Institute and Director/Chief Designer of the Research Center for Landscape Architecture, Professor Hu focuses on promoting environmentally sound development and merging historical

and contemporary design into large scale projects in China.

Providing an exclusive platform to network and create lucrative business opportunities, event organizer Expotrade Global and representatives from Dubai Municipality are looking forward to meeting senior professionals committed to the growth of the landscape industry at the Summit.

“We welcome local and international experts to the Summit to discuss innovative landscape design principals, present case-studies and evaluate the tools and technology to drive best practice in the Middle East region”, says Charlene Corrin, Conference Producer at Expotrade Global.

Also speaking at the Summit, Gold Sponsor Al Yousuf Agricultural & Landscaping will share its smart solutions for eye-catching yet ecofriendly landscaping. The conference will showcase the latest technology and trends from local and international leaders including Nakheel Landscapes, Thorn Lighting, Zeoplant, Ithara Group and Cape Reed.

With the start of the New Year, the Iberflora exhibition organizers

have launched all the operational organization of which will be the 43rd edition of the show, Europe’s leading plant ornamental.A particularly significant edition in which under the motto “United in Green”, the exhibition aims to lead a new exhibition project in which together present the whole range of products and services related to the flower and plant, world of garden or agriculture sectors, among others. The event will be unique in the calendar and will take place from the 1st to the 3rd of October 2014. A date to remember for all professionals involved with the green sector, understood from the widest sense.“Last year there were many synergies that occurred with the simultaneous holding of Iberflora and the new Plant World-Salon exhibition of the Agrarian Innovation and Technology. The same happened in 2012, when Eurobrico and Iberflora cooperated

under the motto “united in Green”

to boost the garden sector,”explains Miguel Bixquert, director of Iberflora.“Therefore, he continues, this year we want to stress the importance of joining efforts and ensure that all actors involved, directly or indirectly, in the world of green sector, meet together to present to the market their new solutions and their latest proposals, besides being able to claim the strength of the economic activity in our country. This is precisely the philosophy that has inspired the new concept of “United in Green”.

“But United in Green - he adds, is especially for us the theme of a bid made to a conscious and concerned customer about new values and lifestyles which are gaining more presence in outdoor activities and respect for the environment”According to the director of the show, at a time when macroeconomic indicators invited to restore confidence in the Spanish market, Iberflora looked also to link themselves to this idea of progress and to become the starting point towards recovery in 2014.

ORangE idEnTiTy

Design duo “The Orange Twins” have come a long way since arriving in Saudi Arabia in 2008. Landscape architect Marlon van

Maastricht and architectural designer Vincent Engel registered as foreign investors in Riyadh after designing the landscape for the 22 hectare Garden Palace of HRH Prince Mishal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Since then their establishment Orange Identity has put their creative signature on the public space through masterplanning, landscape architectural and architectural design projects throughout KSA. Landscape ME invited the duo to share insight on their orange philosophy and their experiences working and living for over half a decade in Saudi Arabia.

Orange Identity:

“It has been a bumpy ride setting up shop in Saudi and at the same time an unforgettable and enriching experience that we will proudly carry with us for the rest of our lives,” says Marlon van Maastricht.

“KSA is not the easiest country to establish a small creative entity like Orange Identity, especially in terms of the ever changing requirements, rules and regulations. Without a strong dose of confidence, persistence

and especially flexibility we wouldn’t recommend just anyone going on a desert adventure like ours.”

From a designers point of view Saudi seems to have just opened it eyes to the broad horizon of creativity over the past 10 – 15 years. It is therefore a place unlike anywhere else where a strong and innovative vision is appreciated. “Especially landscape architecture and urban design are young fields of expertise in KSA which means that, with the appropriate amount of respect for cultural context, clients desire to be wowed and educated. At the same time there is still hesitation towards the unknown, particularly on an engineering level. Getting a concept or design approved is one thing, but to see it through all the way to implementation in its original intended form is a completely different ballgame!”

When asked about the names Orange Identity and Orange Twins, the two reply that it originates deeper than their Dutch heritage. In terms of branding Orange is a strong colour more commonly related to

ORangE idEnTiTy

Holland than their red, white and blue flag. But it’s not their identity as Dutchmen that carries through in their company name as much as their creative personalities. “Both as designers and in general as human beings Marlon and I are quite each other’s opposites,” Vincent explains. “It is no secret that landscape architects and architects have quite different mind frames and approaches. Where landscape, or I should say Marlon’s tropically and Middle Eastern trained landscape approach is usually a much softer playing field with planting and smooth lines, my architectural style is pretty

Ajmakan Villa Design

Page 23: Landscape Magazine March 2014

hardcore minimalistic. This gives us quite a struggle to arrive at common grounds, but usually results in quite interesting concepts when the smoke clouds of our discussions ultimately lift up and we agree on the project approach.”

“You can safely say that when Vincent and I are on the same page, something new is born and the clients are happy,” Marlon adds with a grin. It is this mutual touch on a concept, design or detail which the duo defines as Orange Identity.

The Orange Twins met in college where Marlon was on the path to become a landscape designer and Vincent decided that landscape was not for him as he dived into the world of architectural and urban design. After the college days the two went in quite opposite directions as Marlon ventured to Malaysia in pursuit of becoming a better designer and to gain management experience in the outdoor space, while Vincent enriched his portfolio within the architectural scene in Holland. When in 2007 the opportunity arose to become part of an international consultancy team for the Garden Palace, the two didn’t have to think long to fulfill their early student day speculations of joining forces on a creative venture. When we have a look at their Saudi portfolio we can clearly see the spectrum defined by their different backgrounds and personal flavor, not only in the way their concepts take their final physical shape but also in the broad range of projects and products that leave their office into the desert.

A good project example which both exceeds and merges the boundaries of landscape and architecture is their nearly completed design and build landscape development project Sana’a Square in Riyadh. This project features the 27 hectare Exit 22 interchange on Riyadh’s Ring road, which forms the Southern industrial access to Saudi Arabia’s capitol city, landmarked and skylined by the majestic silhouette of the adjacent Yamama cement factory. Riyadh’s Directorate of Park and Landscape asked the Orange Twins to come up with an eye opening design with minimal green and maintenance to compliment the industrial and infrastructural context of the project site with respect and consideration of its large scale and non-accessible functionality.

Marlon: “With an infrastructural project of this magnitude you have to keep in mind that your main user is driving a car which

Sana'a Square - Birdseye View

Page 24: Landscape Magazine March 2014

22 i www.landscape-me.com i march 2014

either passes by at 110 km/hr or slows down to take one of the exits at 40-60 km/hr. In addition you have to consider that each of the four flower leaf quarters of the project site is more than 6.5 hectare in size which means that you can’t be designing at the same detail level of an urban park with pedestrian users walking at an average speed of 5km/hr or skating / cycling at a maximum of 10-20 km/hr. This is a large scale, high speed drive by project which required an out of the box approach to achieve a low cost but high impact outcome.”

To accomplish this objective, the duo came up with an innovative landscape development strategy using recycled or recyclable materials such as steel, concrete and natural stone to generate different architectural land-art themes for each of the four quarters of the project site. Even though the planting stage has yet to bring the finishing and crucial touch to the project, the sculptures Orange Identity nestled onto the site have

already transformed Riyadh’s industrial citygate into an outdoor display of modern industrial art. Funky might be the most appropriate word to describe the floating trees in planterboxes on four, six and eight meter high legs, cactuses created from recycled oil drums, two meter high steel grass and twelve meter high triangular green towers that create a new found synergy between the architectural elements and their robust industrial and infrastructural environment. Especially around sunrise and sunset, when the silhouettes of their artwork compliments the cement factory skyline and the site’s infrastructural spaghetti against a blood red sky, you can feel the theatrical impact of the design on its surrounding

Another typical Orange Identity can be found at the beach residence of HRH Prince Sultan bin Fahad in Obhur Jeddah. The Orange Twins designed the landscape for this 43.000m2 private resort which is currently being implemented under their supervision. In this project we can find a combination of tropical landscape architecture with predominantly earth elements such as natural stone pavement and wooden lighting, combined with modern architectural touches such as the use of gabions and wood for fencing and recycled telephone poles for privacy and edge treatment.

Nakheel PJSC is one of the world’s largest real estate developers, responsible for a varied array of world- renowned projects

ranging across residential, commercial, retail and leisure sectors. The Discovery Gardens and Garden View Villas are part of their innovative landmark projects. Discovery Gardens is a spacious modern community of more than 26,000 multi- sized apartments, where the main focus was on landscape development filled with lush greenery. This community is home to a variety of residents from different parts of the world. They are divided into six themed districts- Zen, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Mogul, Mesoamerican and Cactus. The Garden View Villas with 208 villas is a group of beautiful unique family homes that represents a sophisticated tranquil neighborhood. The architecture of this community is surrounded by lavish eco- friendly open spaces. Nakheel PJSC wanted to redesign their children play areas in Discovery Gardens and Garden View Villas near the Ibn Battuta Mall.

Project SpecificThe project was for complete dismantling and disposal of existing outdated play systems. Also, redesigning current play areas with new play structures, along with installing and commissioning them for a confirmed period of time. Both communities consist of residents representing an amalgamous mixture of various backgrounds, cultures and languages.

Being high-density neighborhoods, the number of people using the civic amenities is large. Considering this challenge, Nakheel partnered with Blue Stream Environmental Technology LLC to redevelop the play areas at Discovery Gardens and build a new play centre at Garden View Villas. Blue Stream is the leading designer of street furniture and urban décor receptacles in the Middle East and South Asia, delivering projects since 1998.

The playground equipments were to be catered to a fixed age group of 6-12 years taking into consideration the heavy usage during certain times of the day. Having a strong community feeling, Discovery Gardens and Garden

View Villas are home to a variety of families. Hence, it is a common sight to see baby strollers, toddlers, young children, adolescents, teenagers and parents in the park and public areas of the community in the evenings.

Taking into consideration all these aspects, Blue Stream laid out the design for the play systems. Each play area was to provide different play options for the children including spring riders, see saws, hexagonal climbing structures, a multi-purpose activity tower and swings. The mixture is a blend between traditional play systems and more contemporary designs.

The spring riders, swings and seesaws were catered to the younger age groups. While the multi-activity tower and climbing structures catered to the older age groups.

ConsistencyTo maintain uniformity across the community the same play systems were installed at all selected sites. The project had a time constrain and had to meet Nakheel management’s stringent norms on quality, timely delivery and warranty. Blue Stream has successfully and satisfactorily delivered on all these terms.

The scope of work for one of the sites involved a complete design from scratch. It was a green patch of land, which had to be converted into a playground area. And a canopy was provided on top for shading the play area. Nakheel community management credits Blue Stream’s consistency throughout the project.

ResultsBlue Stream with its strong gamut of products has proven time and again to

be the leading choice for world-class play area projects. Each project comes with its own set of unique challenges. Considering these, it is important to understand there is no one size fits all solution for this. So each client is considered on an individual case-to-case basis and the play systems are conceptualized and developed accordingly.

UrbanJungle

The Urban jungle will shield the city from encroaching sands by creating a green space that acts as a barrier against the encroaching desert and at the same time can

be used as an open park for tourists to get a closer encounter with the nomadic way of life in the Arabian Desert.

It’s proposed that the park will be located around the entire outer edge of the Dubai Outer Road of the city and will act as a green barrier to prevent moving sands and roll back the encroaching Arabian Desert from the southern side while shielding the city of Dubai from the constant threats of sand and dust storms, invading the city every now and then. The Arabic Bedouins have adapted their lifestyle in such extreme climatic conditions. They live, breathe and move with the sand.

Therefore this design project aims to work with their eco-system and cultural-system. The site itself inspires the design approach, growing out of the existing topographical features found in the curved, flowing sand dunes and mountainous features. The urban park is designed with tourists, nomads and animals all in mind.

The spaces within this green barrier and urban park are connected in series, thereby presenting an open street- scape experience to the visitors in moving between the sand-dunes, balancing and blurring the interesting distinction between nature and landscape architecture.

According to the United Nations, in 2008 more than half of the world’s population lived in cities and that percentage is expected to rise to 70 percent by the year 2050. More and more cities are waking up to the need to be greener in the

future on a citywide scale. Being globally competitive today means being sustainable.

The urban jungle design-project is an effort to connect the city of Dubai to nature, with an aim to aid Dubai pursue its image as a future green city along with the rush of rapid economic development and urbanization.

The URBAN JUNGLE consists of three main giant installations: Artificial Palm Trees Solar Trees Bedouin Picnic Shelter

Artificial Palm TreesThe proposed man-made mechanical forest (urban jungle) consists of supertrees such as giant artificial palm trees that act as vertical gardens and acting as air venting ducts, and solar trees generating solar power, as well as picnic shelters in the form of Bedouin tents to get relief from the scorching hot sun.

Page 31: Landscape Magazine March 2014

29 i www.landscape-me.com i march 2014

The giant artificial palm-trees draw inspiration from the native palm trees and are one effective way to maximize the potential of landscaping the desert. These towering giant palm-trees take the concept of vertical greenery a step further, integrating the low-lying desert vegetation on the four leveled palm trees, that help not only to filter the air-borne sand from the incoming hot winds but also helps to reduce the temperature of the desert-wind as the wind moves through these plantations on the four levels of the giant palm-trees. These artificial trees are aesthetically striking and are a part of an ecotourism initiative of the city-state, combining with ecologically friendly functions.

Conceived as “environmental engines“, these impressive tree structures are envisioned as a natural cooling system for the wind coming from the Arabian Desert and moving towards the city of Dubai, while bio mimicking the eco-functions of the trees; such as absorbing

and dispersing heat, and also filtering the sand. It is also a positive step towards environmental consciousness and sustainable travel that is needed in greening the desert.

Solar TreesThe solar tree is aimed to be a revolutionary urban landscaping element, aiming to combine innovative design with advanced technology. Solar tree draws inspiration from the organic forms of desert rose, reinterpreting the morphology of the tree and introducing the sensuality of the natural world into the urban context.

The solar trees consist of several overlapping circular discs and have giant steel and concrete trunks, stretching up to 50 m into the sky, generating the green electricity required for the urban jungle, making the green barrier and the urban park set outside

the Dubai Outer Road an impressive example of being energy self-sufficient by catering its own energy demands. The solar trees aim to bring a sense of optimism to grey urban environment and remind us of a greener future. The installation show visible support for clean energy. The large circular discs also operate as temperature moderators, absorbing and dispersing heat, as well as providing shelter from the hot temperatures of

Dubai‘s climate to visitors walking beneath.

Beduoin-tent style picnic areaHospitality is regarded as an honor and a scared duty for the Bedouins. Visitors are usually invited to sit and share a cup of thick, gritty coffee. Guest are ritually welcomed into the household by the host. Even if a conflict occurs the host is expected to defend the guest as if he were a member of his family.

One Bedouin told National Geographic, Even if my enemy appears at this tent, I am bound to feast him and protect him with my life.“ Keeping under consideration such a strong aspect in Bedouin‘s tradition, these tents are erected for the visitors, providing them an opportunity to taste the hospitality of the Arabic –Bedouin culture.

Situated at the heart of the 200ha one-north development hub at Buona Vista, among clusters of world-class research facilities and business parks, is the newly completed Four

Acres Singapore. Perched on top of Nepal Hill and occupying a sprawling site of 2.3ha, Four Acres Singapore is global consumer goods giant Unilever’s newest leadership development facility and also Singapore’s first corporate university of this scale.

Unilever – known for brands like Wall’s, Knorr, Dove and Ponds – set up its first leadership development centre in London over 60 years ago. The plan for Four Acres Singapore, the first outside of Britain, is to continue the tradition of Four Acres London. It is a campus that houses talents and trains them to become top leaders in their company. This time, though, the leaders-to-be will become more attuned to the rapidly growing and emerging Asian economies and high-growth developing

markets as Unilever plans to double the size of its business, while halving its environmental footprint and increasing its positive social impact. Hence, it follows that Unilever’s design brief for Four Acres Singapore was to ensure that the project achieves the BCA Green Mark Platinum certification.

In terms of academic courses, world-class institutions such as the Harvard Business School, INSEAD and Singapore Management University are some of the partners that helped develop the campus programmes.

A LOCATION STEEPED IN HISTORYNestled in a tree conservation area, the site is thick with history. Other than the newly proposed four-storey training block and a single-storey recreation block, there are ten conserved black-and-white colonial bungalows within the compound – this provided an interesting historical backdrop to the proposed buildings that were eventually erected.

A check on the Urban Redevelopment Authority website on local built heritage reveals that Nepal Hill and the adjacent Rochester Park were developed by the British in the late 1930s within the greater British Military Area (the Alexandra district) to house officers and their families.

Nepal Hill was named in recognition of the British Crown’s ties with the sovereign country

of Nepal. The Gurkha regiment in Singapore, led by British officers, were stationed in Slim Barracks at the foot of the hill. The Gurkhas, recruited from Nepal, were famed for their fighting prowess and their loyalty to the British Crown. The bungalows at Nepal Hill served as family accommodation for the British officers of the regiment. The area was given conservation status in March 2010.

Today, top leaders from Unilever companies all over the world are being housed within these conserved buildings during their training programmes. Nine out of ten conserved bungalows have been refurbished for adaptive reuse as on-site accommodation; the remaining has been retrofitted to become a cafeteria, providing an alternative venue to the seminar rooms for discussions among the participants.

SITE-SPECIFIC AND RESPECTFUL DESIGN Nepal Hill is preserved as a major green lung central to the surrounding research facilities and business parks, as envisioned in Zaha Hadid’s one-north master plan. Hence, in the overall planning strategy of the development, it was crucial that the existing mature trees and flora were preserved as much as possible to keep the original wooded environment as it was.

The U-shaped form of the training centre demonstrates the environmental consciousness of the design: the building form attempts to fit within the existing clearing, meandering around clusters of mature trees along its way and working its path around the flora. The result is a unique shape that is site-specific and respectful of the natural surroundings.

Characterised by the unique and expressive roofscape within the master plan, the design of

the buildings within Four Acres Singapore not only responds to the spirit of the master plan in its treatment of the roof form, the dynamic roof of the training centre also responds to the undulating contours of Nepal Hill. The architecture appears to peel gently from the earth.

The design of the new built structures demonstrates the unique relationship of the two buildings by interconnecting them together. The four-storey training block and single-storey recreation block are both independent and separate entities, yet intertwined. The design arranged for the bold gesture of the roof

form at the training centre to sweep down and extend towards the adjacent recreation block. The architectural element transits and morphs to become the canopy of a footpath, and then transforms again to become a roof when it integrates with the recreation block. Visually, it forms an intriguing picture as the roof of one building transforms and transits into that of the other.

Moving beyond aesthetics, this interlocking relationship of building forms allows for a more utilitarian arrangement in services planning. Bridging the two independent buildings, the roof not only becomes a covered linkway between them, it also becomes an important infrastructure where electrical and mechanical provisions are transported from the main building to serve the recreation block.

The façade design of the new training centre

pays tribute to its unique environment by incorporating colours and materials that respect the conserved bungalows. The training centre also has a full green roof which not only reduces heat gain for its interiors, but also acts as a green replacement for the building’s footprint.

Throughout the space planning for the training centre, the view into nature was capitalised at every turn. All seminar rooms were planned with a view either to the garden or the wooded environment. There is also the Harvard University-style amphitheatre at the second storey, which has been designed with an entire stretch of full-height glass windows at the back of the room. These rooms are basked in light at most times of the day, thereby reducing the need for artificial lighting. The toilets within the training centre were also sensitively

designed to the same intent, with full-height glass windows that allow users to enjoy the stunning views of the greenery around the site.

Due to the natural topography of the site, half of the training centre’s first storey is at subterranean level. To be consistent with the central theme and not create an environment that is very introverted, skylights were introduced along the main interior circulation paths. In addition, the team designed a light shaft that channels natural light down to the underground level. At the same time, a cluster of sculptured trees at the centre of the light shaft provides greenery within the space. As the trees grow and extend beyond the first storey and into the external garden space at the second storey, the line between indoors and outdoors is blurred further.

The overall design strategy for Four Acres

inTERnaTiOnal dESignS

Singapore is simple – to respect the environment that it is sited in. The clarity of the circulation paths for pedestrian and vehicular access is distinct. The participant on the rush in the morning can take the

direct stairway connection through the recreation block to the training centre; in the evening, he can take a leisurely walk along the planned nature trail back to his black-and-white bungalow. The charm of

the heritage bungalows is maintained both at the exterior and interior; the design of the guestrooms resonates with the architectural expression of these elegant vestiges of Singapore’s colonial past.

Creative lighting allows you to make a totally different look in your garden. Whether soft subtle lighting to bring a few elements into focus

or specialist lighting equipment used to glamourize the effect. Lighting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to cast an enchanting spell on any outdoor space and create a distinctive mood. Illuminate your outdoor area with lighting while remembering the importance of how it will look from inside. Whether you’re lighting a pathway, landscape, decking or patio it is important not to neglect the ‘internal view factor’. Assess how your lighting will look from both the outside ‘and’ inside. It is therefore critical that the lighting design should consider two layers of lighting: one for when you are inside looking out and one for when you are outside.

CombinationsWell-designed garden lighting can hugely add to the charm and attractiveness of your home while allowing you to view and use your exterior during the hours of darkness. Additionally due to the availability of many products of contrasting designs and effects it is now possible to achieve almost any level of ambience required. It is also possible to implement various lighting circuits which can be used individually or in unison and in various combinations which will allow you to alter your gardens appearance with the mere flick of a switch. You can also accentuate the theatrical effect of any garden illumination and make the night time experience all the more enchanting by playing with shadows.

Light switch locationsWhen considering switch locations it is preferable to have them located next to the door which leads to the garden. This is practical because you can turn on and off the lights as you enter and leave the garden. Additionally having switches in this location negates the

need to enter the garden to achieve illumination. This is especially useful if the reason for switching the lights on is solely to enjoy the view and not to use the garden at that specific time. However it may not be possible to locate light switches in the interior due to prior decoration. In this instance they can be placed outside again preferably near the door or in another easily assessable place.

Light selection and locationLights should be spaced far enough apart to provide the required affect without overkill. Light paths with luminaries under sixty centimeters in height that project downward. In addition to raised models, ‘flush lights’ which are actually recessed in paving have become very popular and are much less obtrusive than their raised counterparts especially during daylight hours. These recessed lights are available in vertical or directional shine. Use spotlights judiciously. Be sure to shield any in direct view to avoid glare. For additional safety on any area with multiple levels, it is advisable to light steps and level changes with strip lights or low-voltage lighting. Low-voltage lights are energy-efficient and easy to install. To enhance structures decorative string lights are a

Outdoor cooking and diningIllumination for a cooking and dining area is essential as one requires good lighting when preparing food and eating (task lighting) for convenience and safety. However flooding your garden with overhead light creates too harsh an effect, creates light pollution and is sure to make you unpopular with your neighbors. Avoid strong lights that might shine directly into the eyes of an onlooker, opting instead for an offset source. Chose directional lighting to illuminate specific locations such as a sink, grilling area and table (work & eating zones). The remainder of the localized space can be washed with a more subtle less obtrusive light while still ensuring sufficient visibility. When placing the cabling for these lights it is useful to add a few extra external outlets to allow for extra task lighting which may be required in the future.

Outdoor rooms and white lightOutdoor rooms which are used for relaxation and entertaining can range from enclosed sunken areas to roofed, low walled enclosures and may (or may not) incorporate the dining area. They can be lit in a similar way to indoor spaces, with low-level lamps and mini spots to highlight decorative elements. In contemporary settings, restrained use of colored lights can create stylish effects. Programed, color-changing fiber optics are an option for a more dynamic effect but are not to everyone’s taste. Currently ‘white light’ is the more widely preferred choice as it is generally accepted to be more mainstream and less offensive to the varying tastes of the majority (think of your guests). There are also multiple shades of white light, which can be achieved by enhancing or diluting the many colours of the spectrum to achieve the sharp or soft white effect. Add to the mix a dimmer switch and it is surprising just how easy it is to totally change the ambience to

good choice and come in a wide variety of designs and configurations. Their chief function is to add sparkle and mood to the outdoor setting, but you can also use them to outline pergolas, arbors, posts, pillars or any structure, guiding guests around the outdoor space.

suit your mood without excessive use of colours. One other benefit to using white light throughout the garden is it makes green plants appear healthier.

Choosing Fittings and effectsWhen choosing light fittings, pick one style of adjustable, shielding exterior fixtures for down lighting, accent lighting, and wall-wash lighting. “Don’t mix fixture types,” It draws too much attention to the fixtures themselves. Tiny LED twinkle lights running from a transformer are simple to install, and create a romantic ambience when woven through

climbers on a pergola. Mini spots are great for up-lighting an architectural plant or a piece of statuary, or for highlighting textured surfaces Low-level backlighting throws the foreground elements into relief and creates dramatic shadow patterns on the wall behind. You can also backlight decorative screens or silhouette figurines or statues by placing a light behind each object. Spike lights are very versatile. You can point them in any direction and use them to pick out plants up to 3m tall, creating atmosphere with form and with the colour that moonlight otherwise provides to a lesser degree. Adjustable spike

spots bring inanimate objects to life and cast dramatic shadows. They are made of copper, stainless steel and powder-coated aluminum or plastic. They can be mounted on poles as well as spikes or with a clamp for mounting on a tree to dapple the ground with pretend moonlight or fixed on a wall to wash over attractive masonry or wall climbers.

Water worldThere are many ways in which light can interact with water. It can be directed from above to ‘reflect’ on other surfaces or from underneath. One way to maximize

the effect is to place a fitting under the surface directly where water tumbles from a higher level, so the beam travels up it to the spout. If there is a wall behind you will get a wonderful rippling light with projected ‘dancing shadows’. Underwater lights carry the highest ingress protection rating, IP68. The first digit refers to the resistance to solid objects, the second to water: IP44 means insect and splash-proof, the minimum advisable; IP67 lights will survive a pressure-hosing. These ratings apply to statement lights – the “jewelry” lights, especially suited to outdoor use.

Power supply and safetyObviously one essential ingredient for landscape/garden lighting is a suitable

power supply. This supply should come directly from the junction box. If there is not enough existing capacity the junction box should be upgraded to facilitate independent fuses for the entire garden electrical system. Under no circumstances should the outdoor electrical system be ‘spliced’ with the indoor wiring. Additionally all cabling out of doors should be ‘armored’ to prevent potential injury. Waterproof sockets are also an absolute requirement. When using low-voltage lights that run from a transformer, house the transformer in a waterproof casing or locate it inside a building. A transformer reduces the voltage from the mains to the lower level at which many garden lighting products work. The size of transformer will depend on the power and number of lights you plan to use. Consider also the cost of electricity and install the most cost efficient lights to reduce bills.

Finishing touch Candles, lanterns, and oil lamps create a magical atmosphere and will compliment your garden lighting with a timeless charm. Candles can be sheltered in glass containers to prevent the wind extinguishing the flame. Oil burners can be placed in floating objects in swimming pools or water features, while lanterns can be hung on trees or placed on walls to add informality while creating further character to your surroundings.

Please tell us about Greenwalls at the new Terminal 2 of Mumbai International Airport? The state-of-the-art Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai (T2) has been awarded LEED Gold certificate for its green design, it’s one of the greenest airport complexes in the world with 26 green walls installed throughout the terminal- the largest Greenwall is located at mega column.

What is so unique about these Greenwalls?Travelers spending time in the new terminal may have enough to discover about Indian history, culture and traditions, with the many artifacts on the huge art wall. However, the green walls are thoughtfully placed throughout the terminal like pockets of greenery reminding us of what is so often missing in today’s cities. Owners, Architects and Operators of Mumbai Airport have given due importance to the green space considering the theme of “garden in airport” for the new terminal. About 9,000 square feet of green wall covers passenger departure gates and lounge areas. A unique feature of our Greenwall system for Mumbai airport is the flexibility in changing the planting pattern or design using the same plants within very short time. What were the main challenges of installing this project? This was a prestigious project in Mumbai Airport and so it was very exciting but also very demanding. Everything from the design, supply, installation and maintenance had to be completed to the highest international standards. At once stage, it was decided to cancel the Greenwalls at the passenger

departure gates (which is a busy and restricted area) due to the concerns on maintenance required for the Greenwalls. However, after seeing our specially designed greenwall system, the designers felt confident of the sustainability of the Greenwalls and gave their approval. How did your company managed to fulfill its commitments within a tight timeframe? To achieve this, our long gardening and landscape experience proved in valuable and gave us the strength and confidence we needed to complete the job in time. We developed a new Greenwall design that provided the necessary infrastructure for a vertical garden that is sustainable and requires minimum maintenance. Three aspects: strength of the structure, irrigation and drainage was given due importance. While designing, consideration was given to the shape of container, which could facilitate frequent change of plant arrangements. 100% recycled polypropylene material was used for the manufacturing of the vertical structure, which was vertically and horizontally expandable for creating any size of Greenwall. The plants were potted in our special pots using the proprietary soil-less planting media. They were then acclimatized and maintained at the suitable temperature, required within the airport. Plant variety “Philodendron Ceylon” was also used extensively in the project, which met all the requirements of a vertical garden in an indoor setup.

What are your future plans? We are looking forward for doing projects internationally and are very impressed with the developments happening in Middle East.

Situated between the banks of Chongqing’s Qing Nian Reservoir and the Palm Spring Geological Park Lake; the floating islands of Palm Island

form a new hospitality precinct within the Palm Springs International Garden.

The precinct comprises five buildings – the ‘islands’ – that collectively house six restaurants, which have been unified with the surrounding landscape through the creation of a dramatic water courtyard.

The HASSELL design was inspired by the city’s position at the convergence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. It visually connects the reservoir and the lake, capitalising on the intrinsic qualities of the existing bodies of water and extending

them to create a spectacular, uninterrupted waterscape and a hospitality experience that is unique to Chongqing.

Water is the key design element, and combined with the precise detailing of the built landscape and architectural elements, multiple and ever-changing perspectives have been created. Patrons at each restaurant can enjoy natural water vistas on one side and private water views of the courtyard on the other. Integrated visually through the insertion of an infinity pool-style water platform, the continuous reflection plane gives the impression that the buildings are floating.

Rhythmical passages of local stone slice through the platform creating central pedestrian connections. Its elevation cleverly conceals the operational aspects of the precinct, such as parking, loading areas and kitchens, and the recessed interfaces preserve sightlines while

navigating level changes to the services beneath. This arrangement allows the public aspects of these dining zones to be revealed above the waterline, so that patrons are able to fully appreciate the water views in all directions.

The design optimises the interplay between light, water and form to unite the built and natural environments and create an inimitable dining experience.

Each building is encased in a façade of white ceramic rods that are arranged in vertical waves at varying thicknesses. The curved, crystal-like glass forms of the buildings combine with the strong vertical waves to alter the visual density depending on a viewer’s perspective.

During the day these white sunlit contours reflect shimmering patterns on the water’s surface that are highlighted against the dark underwater tiles of the courtyard; the ‘vibrating’ lines on the gently shifting water evoking a musical quality. At night, a dream-like atmosphere is created combining various subtle lighting effects in the landscape, with dynamic lighting sleeved inside the thicker rods of the building façades. The light floods out to highlight the thinner rods, enhancing their reflections and allowing the shining wave patterns to be the strongest visual expression.

Chongqing is one of the hottest cities in China, therefore the need to maintain a comfortable environment for patrons and the sustainable operation of the precinct were vital considerations of the overall design solution. Both the reflective façades of the buildings and the cooling breezes, created by flow-through ventilation across the water courtyard, help to reduce temperatures and energy use. Water is captured for use and recycled within the water features and during the
