Dubai Holy Qur’an Park Project in Progress

Having reviewed the progress of project, Lootah urged all parties involved to speed up the works in order to

complete the project on time. ‘Holy Quran park is one of the prestigious project of the civic body and not only the UAE, but also the entire tourist world is waiting to visit the park without patience,’ he said.

He said the project was announced on the occasion of celebrating the 1000th meeting of the technical committee of Dubai Municipality, held in the beginning of 2013.

‘The first stage of leveling was done using the construction wastes and other reusable waste materials saving Dhs 12mn of the cost. In the second stage, planting of 32 hectors and other facilities have been finished,’ he said.

‘The park located in Al Khawaneej area has been specially designed in the Islamic perspective to introduce the miracles of Quran through a variety of surprises for the visitors,’ he added.

Eng. Mohamed Noor Mashroom, Director of General Projects Department said the park in 64 hectors will include all available plants mentioned in the holy Qur’an along with facilities such as attractive main entrance, administration building, Islamic garden, children’s

play areas, Umrah corner, outside theatre, areas for miracles of the Qur’an, fountains, bathrooms, glass building, desert garden, palm oasis, lake, running track, cycling track and sandy walking track.

‘The plants mentioned in Qur’an are 54 items that include fig, pomegranate, olive, corn, leek, garlic, onion, lentil, barley, wheat, ginger, pumpkin, watermelon, tamarind, seder, vineyards, bananas, cucumbers, basil …etc. Planting of total 31 items of these plants are already completed and the remaining 20 items will be planted in the third stage, while three plants are not available on the earth,’ Mashroom said.

‘A glass building will accommodate 15 items of plants and other items are being planted in different gardens specified for each item. These plants are expected to incite the visitors to think about the reason behind mentioning its names in the Qur’an,’ he said.

‘The area allocated for the miracles of Qur’an will include an air conditioned tunnel to show miracles and stories of the Holy book,’ he explained.

‘A lake in the middle of the park will give a look and real feeling of an oasis surrounded by fascinating trees and sands for the visitors,’ he added.

Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, director General of dubai Municipality stated that the General Projects department of dubai Municipality commenced the third stage of the unique Holy Qur’an Park which is expected to be completed by September 2015 at an estimated cost of Dhs 26mn.

• The only dedicated trade show for the regional outdoor design and supply sector• The flagship trade show, in its second edition, showcases a wide range of hard and soft landscaping products and services• Addresses the needs of Dubai which faces continued strong growth in the development of outdoor environmentDubai Municipality today announced that it will host the second edition of Outdoor Design Build & Supply trade show, the only dedicated trade show for outdoor design and supply sector in the GCC. With the real estate sector witnessing renewed growth, and governments becoming increasingly focused on green space development, the GCC region’s landscaping industry will witness growing demand for energy and water-efficient technologies as well as qualified horticultural and agricultural engineering experts. The UAE currently stipulates that nearly 25 per cent of the project development area must be set aside for landscaping, in addition to various emirates across the country focusing on building new parks and landscaped zones. Statistics from Dubai Municipality highlight this trend. Over the last 30 years in Dubai alone, the number of landscaping projects completed per year has risen by over 600%, reflecting the emirate’s dedication towards increasing urban green spaces. Dubai Municipality also estimates that the total green space in the emirate has increased by over four million square meters in the last three years to 28 million square metres by 2012, and this is set to grow in line with the Government’s commitment to creating more sustainable outdoor environments. With several real estate and infrastructure projects in the design and construction stage in Dubai, in addition to the Dubai

The team HOK designed and built KAUST’s 3,500-acre campus-Saudi Arabia’s first LEED-certified project and

at the time of its certification was the world’s largest LEED Platinum project – including more than 70 neighbourhood parks – in less than 30 months. The strong, clear master plan enabled the project to quickly progress from a conceptual idea into detailed design and

construction. Site development began less than a year after the team created the initial sketches. The harsh climatic conditions along the Red Sea made the landscape architecture strategies extremely important. The team selected plants, materials, structures and streetscape furnishings based on their ability to withstand the hot, humid, marine climate.

With summer just around the corner, our thoughts inevitably turn to making the most of our outdoor

spaces before it’s too hot. For many that will mean the creation of a shaded area.

There will be questions on shape and design, on size and colour, but there is one question that often goes overlooked, despite it being one of the most important of all: what effect will your choice have on the environment?

Barely a day goes by without another story on climate change, and yet many of us believe that protecting the environment remains the responsibility of governments and big corporations.

Those efforts that we do make tend to involve fairly obvious things like a bit of recycling or an attempt to use less water. Those are of course important steps, but many of us don’t realise that there are many other ways to help the environment, even down to the construction materials we use in our gardens. Using more wood in

construction and landscaping can make a significant impact. But how?

Trees trap carbon dioxide throughout their life but, in unmanaged forests, when they die they are left to decompose, re-releasing the CO2 they contain. When forests are managed and the timber is harvested, the trees do not decompose and the carbon is trapped.

Page 20: Landscape Magazine February 2014

18 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2014

When it comes to reducing the carbon footprint of a building (the total lifetime CO2 impact, including materials, construction and use), wood has unique advantages, which is why it is the only material to be featured specifically in the European Code for Sustainable Homes. Wood grows naturally and, when properly managed, is a sustainable resource.

Unlike other materials, its manufacture needs almost no energy. Wood is a good insulator and can increase the thermal efficiency of a building, reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions for the duration of its design life. Wood can also be recycled: at the end of a building or shaded structure’s life, its wooden elements can often be re-used, or recycled as secondary products.

Gardens

Page 21: Landscape Magazine February 2014

19 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2014

Page 22: Landscape Magazine February 2014

20 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2014

Managed forests and plantations also benefit the environment because the trees are replanted once they are harvested. A plantation of 1,000 hectares can hold 500,000 trees, producing 6,250 tons of oxygen and removing up to 7,500 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere per year. With the average person using 278 pounds of oxygen per year, that’s enough for about 44,000 people.

The environmental benefits of wood as a building material apply also to thatched roofs, an increasingly common site throughout the region in beach clubs, outdoor areas and private gardens. In fact research conducted in Scotland and South Africa has proven that thatched roofs and timber pergolas are the most sensible and environmentally friendly roofing and shading structures available today. Perhaps most importantly, the thatching we use is a great insulator,

reducing temperatures by as much as 10c.

Thatched roofs, and more specifically roofs that are thatched with Thamnochortus Insignis (more commonly known as cape reed), are carbon negative, thus contributing a negative value to the overall footprint.

Looking at roofs from a “green” point of view, the best roof or shaded structure one can construct would be a cape reed thatch roof. The structure is of timber poles storing CO2 for the life of the building. The thatch does the same, with an added benefit: cape reed is not perennial, meaning that unless it is harvested and preserved, the plant dies, releasing its CO2 into the atmosphere. By using the thatch in a roof, the CO2 is locked in for years (our installations in the Middle East can last as long as 50 years).

So if you want to contribute to saving

the world and make the most of your garden, promote the thatching industry. Not only does it store CO2; as the demand for reed increases, a greater area of land will be put under cultivation, helping the environment and more harvesters will also get involved looking after patches of land, especially as their livelihood depends on it.

Protecting the environment relies not on token gestures, but on adopting more sustainable lifestyles. A more thoughtful choice of building materials is a good first step.

The Cape Reed Group of Companies is a world leader in the construction and installation of exclusive tailor made timber and thatch structures, with offices in Dubai (UAE), Cape Town (South Africa), Marbella (Spain), and Valetta (Malta), and new expansions into Qatar and the South of France.

Blue Stream helped on providing the resort with a custom designed urban décor litter receptacle designed to suit the luxurious ambiance of the environment.

Since the contemporary design and architecture of the resort resembles that of the Asian architecture, this remained a critical focus even during the design of the urban elements involved in the project.

Design OrientedBased on Asian influences, the design mimics that of an earthen pot and blends in perfectly with the urban landscaping at the Anantara Resort, Dubai.

Blue Stream provides Anantara Dubai the Palm Resort and Spa with aesthically designed receptacles

Page 25: Landscape Magazine February 2014

23 i www.landscape-me.com i February 2014

The integration of these receptacles at all sites, the beach area, the pool area, the villa area and the hotel area has been seamless. Because of the perfect blend in with the architecture, not just in design and form but also with the color theme of the landscape the receptacle is an ideal fit. As with all Blue Stream products practicality and functionality have not been compromised. The design and quality of the receptacle was focused on making it resistant to the harsh weather conditions in the area including high moisture and salt content in the shoreline atmosphere. Furthermore, some of the litter receptacles were provided with ashtrays

at smoking areas and these ashtrays are made of stainless steel guaranteeing durability and longevity. The bins are also user friendly, allowing emptying by removal of the lid on top.

ConclusionThe overall design, product quality and delivery schedule was much appreciated by Anantara Resort, Dubai who feel that this is a strong added element to their existing landscape. Blue Stream has helped design something as basic as a litter receptacle and converted it into an element that enhances the urban environment of the resort where one can savour moments of bliss surrounded in unimaginable magnificence.

While the Ayana Resort occupies a dramatic ocean cliff location, the newly opened Rimba

Jimbaran is an 8 hectare site, set back from the ocean on a lush jungle hillside within the 77-hectare Ayana Resort complex.

Rimba Jimbaran Bali sits on pristine landscaped surroundings comprised of tall trees, lush greenery and abundant displays of spectacularly coloured tropical flora made complete with six multi-level pools that seemingly create the illusion of being on your own deserted island paradise surrounded by water.

unique St. Legere philosophyDesigned by St. Legere under the inspired guidance of principal landscape architect, Dennis Selinger, completion of Rimba Jimbaran Bali resort’s landscaped tropical gardens and water features also celebrates the latest chapter in a working relationship between owner and landscape architect that has gone from strength to strength over the last two decades.

“My relationship with developer Karang Mas dates back to in 1991, when I worked with Sasaki Associates in Los Angeles”, says Selinger. “Back then, I was the project manager working with owner Rudy Suliawan to design and launch the Ritz Carlton, which Rudy later took independent as Ayana. Since then, I’ve worked with Rudy expanding the Ayana property and developing many other commercial, residential and hotel sites in both Bali and around Jakarta, like the InterContinental Hotel Jakarta.”

rhimba’s clean, modern designSt Legere developed Rimba’s overall project concept, including the site planning, site grading, architectural massing and the beginnings of some architectural styles. While not a “huge” site in terms of landscape design,

landscape grading (land forming) helped to create the feeling of grandness of size and openness.

Selinger explains that the style differences between Ayana resort, the Residences, and Rimba’s landscapes is that the original

resort was more traditionally Balinese in detailing and overall appearance. “In the early 90’s, when the original Ayana Resort was being developed, visitors to Bali wanted a traditional Balinese feeling where they stayed, whereas today, visitors tend to appreciate a design which is fresh,

modern, luxurious, and has more subtle hints of Bali.”

Selinger explains that they knew from day one that the overall design of Rimba needed to be kept much simpler than Ayana and needed to be a hotel that was more modern looking, with clean, uninterrupted lines and above all be an entertaining hotel.

“The Rimba was a big departure from the design of Ayana and is much more modern and not as “Balinese”, except for some deliberate traditional accents. We believe guest expectations are going in this direction and cleaner, more modern lines have been successfully applied over the last few years into a number of new Balinese projects.”

“Since Rimba is set back from the coastline with no immediate relationship to the ocean, it was also key to have lots of water in the landscape design. Guests enter the lobby and immediately see a reflecting pond with a horizon view of the ocean,” continues Selinger. “Starting from the lobby as the highest point, five terraced pools cascade into each other and even over-hang each other. To make this possible, St Legere made the key decision to raise the lobby level by several metres, affording the view, more height for cascading levels of pools and also allowing back-of-house and services to be located underneath the lobby which saved the huge expense of any excavation into

the very hard limestone base on which the resort is built.” A sixth roof-top pool was part of the design elements of the “Unique

Bar” venue with panoramic views, which will also serves the adjacent function roof and create a destination in its own right.

A new one-hectare garden equipped with a multi-sensory play area featuring water play, rainforest tree houses, ridge top trails and topiary

pergola arches all set within a landscaped garden has been developed overlooking the Marina Reservoir in Singapore.

Grant Associates – the same UK landscape architects behind the Supertrees and

masterplanners of the award-winning Bay South Garden- designed the new Far East Organization Children’s Garden in Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.

The kids water playground is the main attraction in the garden, including Hydro Vaults, Water Splines and orchid-shaped splash buckets, which create an ever-changing interactive landscape of water tunnels, water

mounds and waterspouts. For the toddlers, there is the Fish Fountain with fish sculptures for the young to clamber over.

Grant Associates Director, Andrew Grant said: “The Children’s Garden will create play opportunities that are not found elsewhere in Singapore that connect children to nature via technology, art and horticulture.”

To add a little more adventure, Grant’s designers built two treehouses, set within a thicket of rainforest trees with quick growing Ficus to allow the children to be even closer to nature. Raised platforms and shelters linked by ropewalks, steps, ramps and slides devices for making sounds, as well as telescopes, climbing nets and hammock seating all add to the fun.

The edge of the Far East Organization Children’s Garden follows a ridge of elevated ground that overlooks the Kingfisher Lake to the south and the Marina Reservoir to the north. A

series of topiary pergola arches echo the parabola arch geometry of the ‘Hydro Vaults’ in the water play space. Beneath the pergola is a linked series of balancing, clambering, swinging and climbing elements to allow children the opportunity to enjoy a different type of forest trail.

Since the park’s users are primarily children, shade plays an important role within the play area. A leaf-shaped canopy structure provides shelter from the rain and hot sun reaching over an outdoor amphitheatre formed

The team consisting of DELVA Landscape Architects + Michael van Gessel, Mecanoo and Jojko Nawrocki Architekci has won the competition to design the new Garden of the 21st Century with integrated exhibition pavilion in Warsaw. In a ceremony at the Royal Lazienki Museum last Friday, the Polish Minister of Culture & National Heritage and the Minister of Environment jointly announced the result of an international competition with 80 submissions. The new 2,5 hectare garden will be part of Lazienki Park, one of the most important touristic destinations in Warsaw that includes many 18th and 19th century buildings such as the Royal Baths, a Roman-inspired theatre and a water tower. The existing gardens in the park were all designed around these historic buildings. The Garden of the 21st Century is special, because the design of the pavilion follows from that of the landscape.

A vast city park with a great museum spread over different pavilions is a real asset to any city. So the city of Warsaw has a

real treasure, which is obviously and lovingly cherished by its inhabitants. On a European scale this park is exceptional with its history in building and park architecture, with its interesting variety of environments, with its richness in pavilions, with its scale and with its variety in waterways. It is a real treat to visit and experience the Park and Royal Lazienki Museum.

And now the museum has the vision of creating a new and contemporary garden on a left over piece of land on the southwest side of its border (now still a quite uninteresting part of the park) and to combine this ‘Garden of the 21st Century’ with a pavilion for temporary exhibitions of all sorts. A contemporary garden with a contemporary exhibition hall. A very exciting perspective.

Through centuries gardens have always been the expression of the relationship of humanity towards nature. In medieval times the gardens were introvert, enclosed and inward looking.

Keeping out the dangers lying in nature surrounding humanity at that moment. In the Renaissance people started looking outwards. Discovering the benefits and pleasure of nature. As a result gardens gradually open up to nature. The formal French gardens are the ultimate expression of man’s dominance over nature. In the landscape style period working with nature towards idealistic, uncorrupted and very pastoral landscapes became the driving theme. (‘What is is the great guide as to what ought to be’, Joseph Spence 1756). In modernist period we thought we could make

our world both physically and socially. Now we know better. We can only make our world to a certain extent and with the help of society and especially nature.

So what is our present attitude, our relationship towards nature? It is in our power to dominate and exploit nature and our natural resources but in the end to the

detriment of our selves. We gradually become aware of our responsibilities to take care of our planet and to respond maturely towards the problems facing the earth because of the

very consuming and exploiting attitude of humanity. So our awakening attitude towards nature is that of respect for and a willingness to really understand and work with the forces of nature. And this contemporary attitude towards nature should be presented in this garden of the 21st century.

We propose a prairie. A flowering meadow in which the richness and variety of nature is exposed, which is inviting and can be entered and experienced informally and by everybody. An open, democratic, spacious and joyful garden for everybody but with a multi layered meaning for the informed observer, the plants

man or women. A natural flowering meadow that is maintained not by intensive pruning, planting and weeding. No. A continually changing meadow that is carefully composed to suit this specific location in this specific climate and that is able to gradually enrich itself by careful and loving coaching. A meadow that is beautiful in all seasons, not because it always flowers, but because it show that there is beauty in every season, even in winter when the plants stay uncut to show their abstract basic forms and often expressive seedpods.

The 21st Century garden fits into the location like a hand into a glove. It keeps a respectful distance towards its boundaries so that the trees can grow undisturbed towards monumentality. In that way becoming like the rest of the present park. The edge of the undulating garden is well defined by a

broad path and adjacent retaining wall and balustrade which functions also as a long and informal bench.

Like all the other pavilions and palaces this garden with pavilion has its own position without relating to any of the other buildings. In that way this contemporary building and garden fits into the tradition of the Royal Lazienki Park and Museum.

Both the garden and pavilion will provide new cultural life to the park with its many museums. The pavilion will host large temporary exhibitions, whereas the garden will play a role in local environmental education as well as be an example of 21st century landscape architecture.

Portugal’s Cliff’s live on

“Requalificação das Arribas” is the first project in Portugal’s Foz do Arelho dedicated entirely to the rehabilitation of the cliffs and dunes of the coast, as well as the

transformation of the degraded areas – once used as unsafe parking spaces for decades, with no regard for it's character and ecological aspects – that will create new spaces

to allow different forms of connections for visitors to the natural landscape, whilst preserving it's intrinsic values and dramatic nature.

By nádia Schilling

It's well known that cliffs and dunes have an enormous ecological sensitivity and are subjected to natural erosion caused by the weather.

However, over the years it’s become evident along the coastline that erosion was largely accelerated by the misuse of

these areas. The access to vehicles, the devastation of its vegetation, the large amounts of water coming from the new built surroundings without any control, among other factors, led to its gradual destruction and created dangerous conditions that put visitors at risk.

It was clear that this part of the coastline was in dire need of repair. There was no drainage; natural vegetation needed to be reestablished to promote erosion control and practical structures had to be put in place to make the landscape more tourist friendly.

Before advancing with sketches, a study was conducted by the University of Lisbon, commissioned by the Municipality of Caldas da Rainha, which defined the cliffs risk range. It was only based on that information, along with a survey of all the constraints, that the main plan was developed.

The plan was based on the idea that the problems occurred mostly around the lookouts so with a raised wooden walkway that would define paths for people to walk along safely, while also acting as a barrier to the more sensitive areas, visitors could easily access the area. As a result, cars would be prohibited from

entering the area, with the exception of a few on severely cold winter days-some locations would allow a small number of cars still go to secure areas near the main road so they could enjoy the view- and a controlled drainage system would be installed to aid the recovery of it's biophysical dynamics, as the first step in restoring the native vegetation.

When planning the raised wooden walkway, it was crucial to merge the artificial structure with the natural elements. (All materials and construction techniques were chosen considering the ecological aspects, safety and the structure’s durability.) The walkway should adapt to the existing topography and

be almost invisible from the surroundings. This way, and although the recent vegetation will still grow and turn the structure more discrete, the design was developed with simple patterns in mind, so distinctive of the natural cliff and dune systems: the fractals.

Cliffs are particularly looked as contemplative and reflection spaces. This way, the organic path was built so it could hold different areas of contemplation with different levels, allowing visitors to get to higher vantage points and merge with the landscape in more discrete spots. The wide lookouts now divided into small high platforms, allow each individual to have

Al-Bujairy is located 20 km from the city center of Riyadh along the dry riverbed of Wadi Hanifa and overlooking the

Wadi and the old mud city of Al-Turaif. The site itself is steeped in 250 years of rich history and is directly connected to the house of Saud and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which had a direct impact on the design of the project.

Being the connecting point between Addiriyyah and Al-Turaif, Al-Bujairy has to serve multiple needs for visitors such as services and rest points as well as for the residents of the historical precinct of Al-Turaif and Addiriyyah. Therefore a large Plaza, with surrounding shops, museums and educational facilities was built along
