No eating or drinking in the lab.

Safety Symbols

Eye Protection

What it means: Wear safety goggles when there’s a chance you could get something in your eyes.

What to do if an accident happens: If something does get in your eyes, rinse using the eyewash station immediately for 15 minutes.

Clothing Protection

What it means: Wear protective clothing when working with chemicals and lab supplies.

What to do if an accident happens: If corrosive chemicals get on your clothes, rinse them immediately with the faucet or emergency shower. Remove affected clothing.

Hand Safety

What it means: Wear gloves when there is a potential to get something on them.

What to do if an accident happens: Rinse hands immediately for five minutes using faucet.

Hygienic Care

What it means: Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify your teacher immediately if any chemicals get on your hands or clothing.

Sharp/pointed Object Safety

What it means: Use extreme care when using knives and other sharp objects.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify the teacher immediately in the event of a cut or puncture.

Animal Care and Safety

What it means: Handle animals only as your teacher directs. Treat animals with care and respect. Wash your hands after handling animals.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify teacher immediately if you injure yourself or any live speciment.

Glassware Safety

What it means: Inspect glassware before use; do not use chipped or cracked glassware.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify your teacher immediately if glass breaks. Do not touch any broken pieces.

Electrical Safety

What it means: Do not place cords where someone can trip or where it will cause equipment to fall. Do not use equipment with damaged cords. Do not use electrical equipment near water. Turn off and unplug electrical equipment when finished using it.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify your teacher immediately if you notice abnormal or potentially dangerous equipment. Notify teacher of any electrical shock.

Chemical Safety

What it means: Wear protective clothing and safety goggles, apron, and gloves when working with chemicals.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify teacher while rinsing skin and clothes for at least five minutes using faucet or safety shower.

Proper Waste Disposal

What it means: Dispose of lab supplies as directed by your teacher in appropriate containers. Clean and sanitize all work areas and equipment.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify teacher immediately if glass breaks. Notify teacher immediately if a chemical spills.

Heating Safety

What it means: Wear safety goggles when heating or using a flame. Wear heat-resistant gloves. Angle materials in a test tube away from yourself and others.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify your teacher immediately in the event of a burn or fire.

Plant Safety

What it means: Do not eat any part of a plant. When outside, do not touch or pick any wildlife unless instructed to do so. Wash your hands after handling.

What to do if an accident happens: Notify your teacher immediately if any plant material comes in contact with skin or any plant matter is inhaled or ingested.
