AFTER UPROAR, SALMAN APOLOGISES FOR YAKUB-TIGER TWEETS Mumbai, (IANS) After tweets that triggered a volley of protests, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan on Sunday evening apologised for saying that the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon should not hang but his brother Tiger Memon should. While standing by what he said overnight, Salman said his father Salim Khan wanted him to retract his tweets "as they have the potential to create misun- derstanding". And he promptly deleted the earlier tweets. In his latest tweet, the 49-year-old actor he never sought to imply that Yakub Memon, who is set to hang in the Nagpur jail on July 30, was not involved in the deadly 1993 blasts that left 257 people dead and over 700 injured in what was then the world's worst urban terror attack. "What I said is that Yakub Memon should not hang for him (Tiger). I have not said or implied that Yakub Memon is innocent. I have complete faith in the judicial system of our country. "Many lives were lost in the Mumbai blasts. And I have repeatedly said the loss of (even) one innocent life is equal to the loss of all humanity. "I would like to unconditionally apologize for any misunderstanding I may have created unintentionally. I also strongly condemn those who are claiming my tweets are anti-religious. Indian officials believe he and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim are in Pakistan. In his previous tweets, the "Ek Tha Tiger" star also called Tiger Memon a coward for letting his brother face the gal- lows. "We can die for our family. Tiger, your brother will be hanged for you in some days. Say something, make a statement or address that it was you. What kind of brother are you?" The "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" actor also asked Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to share details about Tiger's whereabouts with Indian authorities. "Where are you hiding Tiger? Sharif Saab, I would request you to let us know about Tiger, if you have any information about him. "I've been wanting to tweet this for three days and was afraid to do so but it involves a man and his family. Don't hang brother, hang the fox who ran away." Taken aback by his son's outburst, father Salim Khan told Zee Media: "Salman should have thought sensitively before tweeting in support of Yakub." Salman's earlier tweets led to furore, forcing authorities to deploy around 50 policemen outside his residence in Galaxy Apartment in Bandra in fear of possible violence. Baricades came up outside his building. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mumbai president Ashish Shelar denounced Salman by calling his remarks an "insult to all Mumbaikars". Shelar sought the cancellation of Salman's bail against his five-year jail term in the 2002 hit and run accident case. SMALL JUMP IN OXYGENHELPED FIRST LIFE ON EARTHWashington, (IANS) Just a slight bump in oxygen level facili-tated the early appearance of animals on the Earth, shows a study.Earlier, scientists believed that a dramatic change in oxygenlevels might have been responsible for the appearance ofcomplicated life forms. These complicated life forms like whales, sharks, and squidsevolved from less complicated life forms, such as micro-organisms, algae, and sponges."Going forward wewi l l need muchmore precise con-s t ra in ts on themagnitude of oxy-gena t ion and thephys io log ica l r e -quirements of earlyanimals to continuetesting the impactof oxygenation onCambr ian an ima llife," said first au-thor Erik Sperling,an assistant professor of geological and environmental sci-ences at Stanford University."We suggest that about 635 million to 542 million years ago,the Ear th passed some low, but critical, threshold in oxygen-ation for animals," said Benjamin Gill, an assistant profes-sor of geoscience in the College of Science, Virginia Tech, injournal Nature."That threshold was in the range of a 10 to 40 percent in-crease, and was the second time in Ear th's history that oxy-gen levels significantly rose," Gill said. The team discovered oxygen levels rose in the water andatmosphere, but at lower levels than was thought necessaryto trigger life changes. The team estimated oxygen levels by analysing iron found inshale rock, which was once mud on ancient seafloors. The location and amounts of iron in the rock gave impor tantclues about ancient ocean water chemistries over time. The team collected rock data from across the world and thesame were analysed, compiled, and statistically modelled. Many organisms on the Ear th, including animals, need oxy-gen to produce energy and per form other life functions.

London, (IANS) Higher levels of sex hormones at the 'wrong' timemay be blamed for increased cancer risk in night shift workers, saysa new study. People who work night shifts may be more at risk ofbreast or prostate cancer because of hormonal changes. Work thatinvolves night shift was previously linked to a raised cancer risk, butthe reason for the same was not clear. The study by Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain suggeststhat increased levels of sex hormones, such as oestrogen and test-osterone, at the 'wrong' time might be to blame, Daily Mail repor ted.The researchers recruited 75 night and 42 day workers, ages 22 to 64years, in different working settings and measured their hormone lev-els in the urine samples. They found that night workers had higher levels of total progestagensand androgens, compared with day workers, after adjusting for po-tential confounders. "We found increased levels of progestagens andandrogens as well as delayed peak androgen production in night shiftworkers compared with day workers," said the study published in thejournal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention (CEBP).Night workers were found to have significantly higher levels of sexhormones at the wrong time, such as testosterone peaking between10am and 2pm, rather than between 6am and 10am. "The increaseand mistiming of sex hormone production may explain par t of the

increased risk for hormone-related cancers observed in night shiftworkers," the study said.

COMPARING YOUR PARTNER WITHOTHERS BAD FOR RELATIONSHIP

MODELS WALK THE RAMP DURING FASHION FAME SEASON ONE IN BENGALURU (IANS).

Toronto, (IANS) Do you often compare your par tner with someoneelse's when it comes to children's homework or household chores?Well, be careful as this may be detrimental to your relationship, showsresearch. According to researchers from the University of Toronto, people do compare their par tner to others with significant negativeconsequences for the relationship. Whether or not someone protectsa par tner from the negative implications of comparisons depends onthe degree to which they view themselves and their par tner as oneunit. This phenomenon has been dubbed "self-other overlap" by psy-chologists. "People who are low in self-par tner overlap have diffi-culty maintaining positive par tner perceptions following threateningcomparisons of their par tner to others. This may be a key source ofstress and conflict in people's relationships," said Sabrina Thai, psy-

chology PhD candidate. On the other hand, people who are high on'self-other overlap' will attempt to protect their par tner and minimisethe threat by rating the trait or skill that they compared their par tneron as less impor tant. Fur thermore, these people are able to maintainpositive views of their par tner in spite of unfavourable comparisons."They still see their par tner as being close to their ideal par tner, which has positive implications on their relationship," Thai said in apaper that appeared in the journal Personality and Social PsychologyBulletin. By highlighting the benefits of high "self-par tner overlap",this research may identify a possible future intervention technique."Perhaps temporarily boosting someone's perceptions of 'self-par t-ner overlap' may help them cope with and overcome the negativeoutcomes of comparing their par tner," the authors said.

Skin tan taking a toll? Opt forstrawberries, vitamin CBy NiveditaNew Delhi, (IANS) Getting a natural tan makes the skin lookbeautiful, but what to do when sun-exposed par ts are way toodarker compared to the covered areas? To give a glowingeffect to tired skin, the trick lies in a milk mask along withstrawberries and oral medication like anti-oxidants and vita-min C, exper ts suggest.Capital-based dermatologist Kiran Lohia said it is impor tantto avoid going out in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., andif this is impossible, then always walk out after thoroughlycovering the exposed areas."Avoid going out during that time as the sun is at its strongest.Stay indoors if you can to protect yourself from the elements.Wear a hat when you go outside. The hat will protect your facefrom the heavy sun and give you physical cover from UV rays,"Lohia told IANS. Also, it is impor tant to wear sunblock withboth UVB and UVA protection."UVB block protects you against tanning and skin cancer, whileUVA block protects against pigmentation and photoageing. So,look for a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 with PA ++ pro-tection for broad spectrum coverage. Sun rays can penetratethrough windows, and exist even when it's cloudy or raining. So, protect yourself no matter what," added the exper t.Bleaching ointments and cream lotions can also be used toremove the tanning occurred on the skin. One can easily findthem at any chemist shop or opt for several other proceduresthat can help get rid of tan with regular sittings. One can alsochoose for peels like fruit bio-peel and vegetable peel thatwill brighten your skin tone from within. If one is not ready to step out to visit parlour, then opt for homeremedies."Star t off with this remedy by adding two ripe mashed straw-berries into a spoon of fresh honey. Apply it as a face packuntil it dries and wash off to reveal fairer and softer skin.Strawberry will act as a per fect tanning removal agent whilethe honey will help soothe the skin," Bhar ti Taneja, director ofAlps Group, told IANS.One can also try curd and paste of besan (chickpea flour). Curdmixed with pulp of fleshy par t of tomato, overripe banana andoverripe papaya is also good. All of these contain fruit acids. Milkand dairy products contain lactic acid that helps in exfoliation oftanned skin to a certain extent.

According to the researchers from University of Nor th Carolina, if young women are not using Facebook to compare their bodiesto their friends' bodies, they are less likely to struggle with risky dieting behaviours compared to their peers. "Young college women who aremore emotionally involved in Facebook and have lots of Facebook friends are less concerned with body size and shape and less likely toengage in risky dieting behaviours," said Stephanie Zerwas, assistant professor of psychiatry. In the study, 128 college-aged womencompleted an online survey with questions designed to measure their disordered eating. The team also asked questions about each woman'semotional connection to Facebook -- her incorporation of the social networking site -- into their daily life, time spent on the site each day and number ofFacebook friends. They also checked whether they compared their bodies to their friends' in online pictures. The team noticed that being more emotionallyinvested in Facebook was associated with less concern about body size, shape and lesser risky dieting behaviours. "Facebook could be an amazing tool tonurture social support and connections with friends and families," Zerwas said. The social networking site could also be used a tool to foster dangerousdieting behaviours in young adults, the authors said in a paper published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

IS YOUR FOOD REALLY 'CHEMICAL-FREE'?London, (IANS) Are you obsessed with detox food products that are supposedly free from chemicals? Well, there is no such thing as a"chemical free" food, shows a research. No matter what the companies selling detox products say, in reality chemicals are in everythingwe eat -- though all may not be unhealthy, a video created by a Toronto-based web por tal ASAP Science shows. It shows how bananas, for example, contain more chemicals than some sweets and explains that it is the dosage of chemical, rather than the chemical itself, which often causesproblems, Daily Mail reported. In the video, scientists explain that while many people will advise against eating food which contains chemicals that are hard topronounce, yet a single blueberry contains chemicals like methylbutyrate and oleic acid benzaldehyde, among many more.

EFFECTS OF STRESS ONSKIN AND HAIR

New Delhi, (IANS) Leading a stressful life? Unfor tunately,it shows on your skin and hair, says an expert. PankajChaturvedi, dermatologist and specialist hair trans-plant surgeon at MedLinks, a centre for skin and hairtreatment, shares what stress can do to skin and hair:* Acne: Since our skin and mind are deeply connected;the moment stress hormones are released, oil produc-tion in the skin increases and leads to acne breakouts.* Ageing: It is easy to identify people who are stressedbecause the signs of ageing such as wrinkles and dark circlesstar t to show on their face much earlier than they should.* Hair loss: Due to stress, our blood vessels get constrictedand the hair follicles are unable to get the requiredquantity of oxygen and other nutrients, which are necessary for hair growth.Lack of nutrients often leads to hair lossfor various people who are stressed.

Here are some of the best ways to reduce stress:* Get a nice massage. It will help to relax your body and

open all the blocked energy channels.* Exercise for some time. It motivates you and liftsyour mood. It helps to energise you and is the key toa healthy body.* Meditate for at least 15 to 20 minutes per day. Youcan do it any time, any place at your convenience.Sitting in peace can help you to focus your thoughtsand help release stress.* Eat small frequent meals and eat healthy food. Some

foods that are really good for busting stress includealmonds, blueberries and salmon.

* Sleep for at least eight hours. Lack ofsleep makes a person cranky and irritable.Nothing can beat a good night's sleep inreleasing stress.

New York, (IANS) Absence of an hormone in the brain may trigger overeat-ing behaviour in people who eat for pleasure rather than hunger, research-ers repor t. In the lab experiments, researchers found that when the "gluca-gon like peptide-1" (GLP-1) hormone was reduced in the central nervoussystem of mice, they overate and consumed more high fat food."The mice in which the peptide deficiency was induced ate beyond the needfor calories and showed an increase preference for high fat food," saidVincent Mirabella, doctoral student from New Jersey-based Rutgers Uni-versity. "Conversely, when we enhanced GLP-1 signaling in the brainsof mice, we were able to block the preference of high fat foods," headded.GLP-1 peptides are small sequences of amino acids that have manyfunctions, including how our bodies regulate eating behaviours. Theyare secreted from cells in both the small intestine and the brain and aresupposed to let our brain know when we are satisfied and should putdown the fork. The results provide new evidence that targeting neuronsin the mesolimbic dopamine system -a reward circuit in the brain - ratherthan targeting the whole body might be a better way to control overeatingand obesity with fewer side effects."Over eating, which causes obesity, can be considered a food addiction anda neuropsychiatric disorder," assistant professor Zhiping Pang noted. "Byfinding out how the central nervous system regulates food intake behaviourvia GLP-1 signaling, we may be able to provide more targeted therapy withfewer side effects," he concluded in a paper published in the journal CellRepor ts.

Hormone deficiency in brain may cause binge eating

COMMON MYTHS ABOUTEXERCISE AMONG WOMENNew Delhi, (IANS) A few women are scared of squats becausethey are said to be bad for knees. This and more are misconcep-tions that women have regarding exercises, says an exper t.Fitness exper t and nutritionist Neeraj Mehta shares a few exer-cise myths among women:* Weight training will bulk up my body: Male and female bodiesdiffer in many ways. Weight training reacts in different ways forboth the body types. Male body produces a hormone called tes-tosterone which is essential if you want to gain size. Good newsis that female body does not produce this hormone. So chancesof getting bulky if you lift weights are nil. Instead, weight trainingwill help you in toning up.* I should not work out during menstrual cycle: You can and youshould workout during your menstrual cycle. Exercising duringyour periods will help you in reduced abdominal cramps. Whenyou exercise your body releases feel good hormones "Endorphins",which keeps your brain calm and makes you feel better. However, avoiddoing intensive exercise and skip the abs day. Light Yoga stretches, cardio, swimming, light weight training is recommended.
