How to get rid of facial hairBEAUTY EXPERT SHAHNAZ HUSAIN SUG-GESTS SOME HAIR REMOVAL TIPS“There are many ways of removing facial hair. The method should be

chosen according to quantity or thickness, location and rate ofgrowth.Temporary methods of facial hair removalPluckingThis method involves the use of tweezers and removes hair from thefollicles. Therefore, re-growth takes time. Plucking is suitable forstray hairs on the chin, between and under the brows. It should notbe used for hair on the upper lip. The area should be first wiped withcotton wool, soaked in a mild antiseptic solution. One should alsotake care not to pluck out hair from a mole, before consulting adoctor.ThreadingIt's the most common method of removing facial hair. Thedisadvantage is that the effect is temporary and the procedure hasto be repeated periodically. It is useful for areas like the upper lipand the eyebrows. In fact, threading is done to shape the eyebrows.Frequentthreading can cause skin irritations. On sensitive skins, there can beredness or a rash. Avoid threading on areas with eruptions, likepimples or acne. A zinc ointment or ice can be applied to soothe theskin.Waxing

Many beauty salons offer "katori" waxing for facial hair. Cold waxwould be safer for the face. Waxing strips are available. However, large areas of the face should not be waxed. It would be good forsmaller areas like the chin, area above the lips or sideburns. Forexcessive facial hair, many women use a combination of methods, like threading chin and area above lips and bleaching the rest of theface. Or, threading chin and upper lip and waxing sideburns.EpilationAn epilator is a small gadget for hair removal. Epilators for facial hairare different from the ones for body hair. The effect lasts for about 4to 6 weeks. Epilators pull out the hair by the roots. It is said that thesmallest hair can be removed with an epilator. There issome initial pain, which may decrease gradually.

Fruits, veggies make you more optimisticPeople who prefer to eat fruit and vegetables arelikely to be more optimistic thanks to higher lev-els of plant compounds called carotenoids intheir blood, says a new research.

“Previous studies have shownthat high blood levels ofantioxidants, of whichcarotenoids are one form, may bea marker of good health. A

commonly-known carotenoid isbeta-carotene, found in highlevels in orange fruit and green, leafy vegetables. Antioxidantshelp keep other molecules in thebody from producing free radicals, which can damage cells andcontribute to disease. "Individualswith greater optimism tended to havegreater levels of carotenoids such

as beta-carotene," said JuliaBoehm, of the

Harvard School of

Public Health, who led the study, the journal PsychosomaticMedicine reports. "This is thefirst study of its kind to report arelationship between optimismand healthier levels ofcarotenoid concentrations," sheadded. One theory is thatantioxidants might have a de-stressing effect, according to theDaily Mail. The current studyevaluated blood concentrationsof nine different antioxidants,

including carotenoids such asbeta-carotene and vitamin E innearly 1,000 American men andwomen aged between 25 to 74and 74 years. Participants filledout a questionnaire about their lifeattitudes and provided bloodsamples to the researchers.People who ate two or fewerservings of fruits and vegetablesa day were significantly lessoptimistic than people who atethree or more servings a day.

MAXIMISE YOUR MORNINGSFOR A HAPPY LIFEContd. from Page 25And while owls are linked with greater levels of creativity andintelligence, they are more likely to exhibit pessimism, depressionand neurotic behaviour. Clearly, the old proverb holds: Early tobed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

Why the first half? So, why are mornings such a great time to do things? Human

willpower and motivation are at their strongest then. You are mentallyat your sharpest and less likely to be interrupted than later in theday, say experts. Starting on a winning note can ensure you buildon that momentum all day long.

One of the world's leading time management experts, Dallas-based Peter Turla agrees that mornings work best for busy people, because "the day is a blank slate then". "You can plan, control andfocus on things that are important to you. Later in the day, you may beforced to work on things as they come up," he says in an email interviewto us. But how does one successfully balance a chaotic morningschedule with seemingly impossible personal goals?

First things first: Mornings are a great time to devote to thingsthat are of utmost importance to you — whether it's exercise, hobbiesor family time. Vanderkam, in her book, writes that she found thatbusy and productive people had figured out that if they wantedsomething, they had to make it first priority. Figure out what willmake your morning perfect and focus on that before the phonesstart ring- ing, emails start pouring in and the help knocks at yourdoor. Take control of the time that is solely yours to ensure asuccessful morning. Peggy Duncan, international personalproductivity expert and author of the Time Management MemoryJogger, says, "People are different and so are their needs. Whatworks for one won't work for another. You have to first decide whatyou want to get done, when it needs to be done, and how all thatfits into your schedule." Plan your time: It's important to make timetangible because it moves so fast and seems so amorphous. Mosttime management experts exhort planning for the next day beforeyou turn in. "This allows you to get off to an easier, swifter start thenext morning since you've already figured out part of what needs toget done," Turla says. He advocates the 5P planning programme— Proper Planning Provides Peak Performance — and suggeststhat you plan ahead to take advantage of the time when you are"mentally sharpest".
