CU medical schoolresearchers haverevealed that intense

light could be used to treatheart attacks. There arealready lots of ways to treata heart attack - CPR, aspirin,clot-busters and more. "Thestudy suggests that stronglight, or even just daylight, might ease the risk of having aheart attack or sufferingdamage from one," said TobiasEckle, MD, PhD, an associateprofessor of anesthesiology, cardiology, and cell anddevelopmental biology atthe University of ColoradoSchool of Medicine. "Forpatients, this could meanthat daylight exposure

inside of the hospital couldreduce the damage that iscaused by a heart attack,"Eckle stated. What's theconnection between lightand a myocardial infarction, known commonly as a heartattack? The answer lies, perhaps surprisingly, in thecircadian rhythm, the body'sclock that is linked to lightand dark. Proteins in thebrain regulate the circadianclock. But the proteins arein other organs as well, including the heart. Eckleand Holger Eltzschig, MD, aCU professor ofanesthesiology, found thatone of those proteins, calledPeriod 2, plays a crucial role

in fending off damage from aheart attack. During a heartattack, little or no oxygenreaches the heart. Withoutoxygen, the heart has to switchfrom its usual fuel - fat - toglucose. Without that change inheart metabolism, cells die andthe heart is damaged Andhere's where the circadian

rhythm comes in.The study showed that thePeriod 2 protein is vital for thatchange in fuel, from fat toglucose, and therefore couldmake heart metabolism moreefficient. In fact, Strongdaylight activated Period 2in animals and minimizeddamage from a heart attack.
