Condominiums sales remained strong in last quarter of 2014; up by 8.3 per cent compared to same period in 2013 TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Paul Etherington announced that there were 4,975 condominium apartment sales reported through the TorontoMLS system in the fourth quarter of 2014. This result was up by 8.3 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2013. "Demand for con- dominium apartments remained strong in the fourth quarter of 2014. While the supply of condo- minium apartments listed for sale grew in the fourth quarter, includ- ing a large number of newly com- pleted units, the number of sales grew at a faster pace. Competi- tion between buyers increased in the condo market over the past year," said Mr. Etherington. "In- terest in ownership housing in the GTA, including demand from first- time buyers in the condo market, is extremely strong. The major- ity of households understand that a home purchase represents a quality long-term investment," said Mr. Etherington. The aver- age TorontoMLS selling price for a condominium apartment in the fourth quarter of 2014 was $367,199 - up 3.8 per cent com- pared to the average of $353,799 repor ted for the same period in 2013. "Despite very strong condominium apartment completions over the last two years, we have not experienced a glut in inventory. The number of buyers has more than kept up with the number of units available for sale. This is why we continued to expe- rience above-inflation average price growth in the condo segment," said Ja- son Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis. IRVINE - Kia Motors America's (KMA) all-new 2015 Sedona has earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) 5-star overall safety rating. With its long list of standard safety features and robust body structure, the Sedona received a 5-star rating on the NHTSA front-impact, side-impact and pole tests. "NHTSA's recent 5-star rating of the 2015 Sedona is a testament to Kia's commitment to safety. The Sedona is all-new for 2015 and combines CUV-like styling, inside and out, with exceptional quality and the tremendous value our brand is known for," said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning. "As families be- gin planning summer vacations in their Sedonas, they can feel confident in the engineering that went into their vehicle and that NHTSA has validated the product with its highest safety rating." The 2015 Sedona is built on an all-new chassis with static tor- sional stiffness that is 36-percent greater than its closest seg- ment competitor. Furthermore, 76 percent of the body is com- posed of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), which provides exceptional rigidity, durability and crash protection for all occu- pants. Adding to its stout structure, the Sedona has been engi- neered to distribute impact loads evenly through the body with ultra-high-strength steel tubes installed in the A pillars.

PSFW 2015: Synergy of Pakistan'scraft, design and fashion

Lahore, (IANS) The country's rich ar t and craft techniques imbuedwith modern sensibilities and bolder cuts and patterns enhanced thelegacy of the just-concluded PFDC (Pakistan Fashion Design Coun-cil) Sunsilk Fashion Week 2015 (PSFW).From the introduction of Design District, the country's first craft, fash-ion, textile and design based district, to designers getting bolder indesigns - the four-day gala saw eight high-street brands, 16 luxury/prêt designers, six textile brands and four emerging names showcas-ing their creativity. The event was also unique in terms of presentation as there werethree distinct platforms dedicated to three different design patterns. While day one was dedicated to showcasing by luxury/prêt design-ers, day two and four had both high-street brand followed by luxury/

prêt shows. The third day featured creations by textile houses to high-light Pakistan's textile prowess and high street fashion strength. SaadAli, CEO of PFDC, said that each year, they aim to improve the struc-ture of the show and work with high street, textile and mainstream/emerging luxury/prêt designers to find the best possible platform for thebusiness of fashion."For the last few years, we introduced entirely separate categories for all ofthe aforementioned categories. This year we took this vision one step further, introducing dedicated days for lawn (fabric) and luxury pret as well, a deci-sion that we feel was well-received and will result in dividends for all partici-pating designers and fashion brands," Ali told IANS. "With a restructured andstreamlined format, with no breaks between the luxury/prêt shows specifi-cally, we feel that the overall time management of the event was vastly

improved which made for a more beneficial PSFW experience for all stake-holders involved," he added. Some of the participating names who im-pressed fashionistas with their collections were Fahad Hussayn, HSY, Humaand Amir Adnan, Misha Lakhani, Nida Azwer, Natasha Kamal and SyedaAmera, Hassan Riaz, BeechTree, Shirin Hassan and Gul Ahmed. Whilesome opted for ethnic lines with shalwars, shararas and ghararas withheavy detailing and craft work, there was also a heavy display of bold cutsand patterns - for instance, off-shoulder gowns, short-length dresses, croptops and thigh-high slits. One wondered if there were takers of such bold designs in Pakistan. To that,Ali said: "Yes. There are buyers from Studio 8, PFDC representatives in Indiaand others who came to see the collection. We are stocking about 20designers over here...so there are many things happening." Ali noted thatdesigns from Pakistan also find a good market in India, and the trend isgetting a push thanks to the Pakistani shows that are being beamed in Indiavia Zindagi TV."Those shows are dictating fashion, so I think Pakistani fashion is evolving,"he said, and emphasised that "strengthening the capacity building and op-erational efficiency of the Pakistani retail fashion industry" is what they aretargeting. Apart from shows, another highpoint of the event was the intro-duction of Design District, that will also house a first-of-its-kind TextileMuseum in the country. On the concluding day of PSFW 2015, PFDC chairperson Sehyr Saigolannounced that the Design District is a "step to further the business offashion - a measure and initiative that drives our very ethos and visionof promoting craft, design and fashion in synergy"."It will serve as a multi-purpose specialised facility to assist indeveloping and enhancing the ar t and craft industries, which are anintegral part of Pakistan's rich design legacy," she said. All in all, thePakistani fashion industry knows where its strength is, and the peopleconcerned are making effor ts to promote it in best possible way.

HUMBLE TURMERIC CANHELP TREAT ORAL CANCERSNew York, (IANS) Turmeric, the familiar yellow spice common in In-dian cooking, may also help treat oral cancers caused by a virus, saysa study co-authored by an Indian-origin researcher. One of the herb'skey active ingredients - an antioxidant called curcumin - appears tohave a quelling effect on the activity of human papilloma virus (HPV),the study pointed out. "Turmeric has established antiviral and anti-cancer properties," said corresponding author Alok Mishra of the EmoryUniversity, Atlanta, US. "And according to our new findings, we couldsay that it is good for oral health too," Mishra noted. HPV is a virus thatpromotes the development of cervical and oral cancer. There is no cure, butthe new findings suggest that curcumin may offer a means of future control.Mishra's research group first noted the effect of curcumin on HPV andcervical cancer cells in 2005. The antioxidant slowed the expression of HPV,suggesting that curcumin could control the extent of HPV infection.
