animal district // phase 1 Spring 2011 // Individual Design Project

This project proposes the creation of an “Animal District”, situated in the Toronto Portlands. Such a district divides itself into exological bands, which act as species attractors and organisers. These bands work with the existing infrastructure in the region and attempts to create an architecture, that not only supports ecological variance within the city, but becomes the means for it to take shape.

memory - scape

This installation examined the process of searching for a memory, and the effects of trauma on the human psyche. Using sheets of black fabric differnt senses of enclosure were created to lead one through the stages of memory retrieval ; from visual, to text, and finally audi-tory. However, the memory we retrieve is not perfect. and rather it is a fragment of a moment, something that will forever be elusive to us. As if it were on ‘replay ‘ in our minds.

spacebox

The Windrunner is a conceptual design that uses a breezeway to supply cross ventilation and ample natural daylighting across an open concept interior. In the spirit of a nomadic lifestyle the Windrunner is as adaptable as the user needs it to be, a table can become a peice of the floor and the bed can be retracted to the ceiling freeing up the space below.

house for a composer

As a seasonal home for different composers, the layout is as open and adaptable as possible. The house can transform into a perfor-mance space simply by opening up the several sliding glass walls that look out onto the court. The courtyard plays an important role in the overall shceme of the house, acting as the main ‘audience’ space by creating an almost amphitheatre like effect at the heart of the home.

architectonics

The goal of this project was to explore the basic principles of architectonics. In addition it served as our first real comprehensive archi-tectural modeling experience. Each model was required to have basic elements such as a column, a beam a wall and a roof in addition these elements would serve to create a unique place of repose.

structure + form

This installation examined the relationships present within structure and form. It is comprised of two main elements, a suspended canopy and a self supporting arch which both mimic the shape of waves crashing against rock. The boxes are bound in chains by snapping the the lip of one onto that of the box preceding it. By layering and folding shorter chains a rigid spine is created which allows a self suport-ing arch to emerge from the intital pattern laid out on the gallery wall.

52 queensgate mews

This small pied- a- terre, located in South Kensginton London, is a quintisential example of the mews style house. Its shape and compact size cause several issues and as such maximizing all usuable space was a top priority. Through the addition of a new mansard roof it became possible to add a new mezzanine level. This gave the space a new sense of lightness along with renewed complexity and dimen-sion. Construction is to begin in June.
