The draft Five-Year Financial Plan has been presented to the RDEK Board of Directors and we are now inviting public comment on the Plan.
“The Financial Plan lays out a very specific budget for 2014 and a more general forecast for the years 2015-2018,” explains RDEK Chief Financial Officer Shawn Tomlin. “Currently, the 2014 budget includes expenditures of just over $24.5 million dol-lars, which represents an overall decrease of 0.7%”
Copies of the Five-Year Financial Plan and comment forms are available for viewing on the RDEK’s website (www.rdek.bc.ca), and at both the Cranbrook and Columbia Valley RDEK offices. The
RDEK will also be posting a series of short videos that provide a general overview of the 2014 budget, along with a more specific look at how the proposed budget impacts each Electoral Area.
“If people have com-ments or questions about the Plan, we would like to hear from them,” adds Tomlin. “This presents an opportunity for discussion about the Plan and the RDEK’s direction for the coming year to five years.”
Staff continue to meet with elected officials, and other groups and organizations around the region as part of the consultation. Public comments will be received until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 28th.

Kimberley RCMP are searching for a white VW (likely Rabbit or Golf) after a colli-sion Tuesday night on Wallinger Ave. The VW was coming down Overwaitea hill when the driver lost control; the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a Toyota Rav.
Both drivers stopped but then the driver of the white VW drove away prior to exchang-ing details. The grill from the VW came off in the collision and was found at the scene. The collision took place on Tuesday, February 18, around 7:30 p.m.
Police are asking for assistance in locating the vehicle involved. The VW sustained damage to the front and does not have a grill.
If anybody sees a vehi-cle fi tting the descrip-tion they are asked to contact the Kimberley RCMP at 250-427-4811, with the location and license number.

Over 100 women from the Elk Valley will gath-er together to take part in numerous and varied workshops and to hear inspirational women from the business, aca-demic and health world speak in a day of shar-ing, empowerment and enlightenment on International Women’s Day (IWD), Saturday March 8th
Goddess Rising will take place at Fernie Secondary School, Saturday March 8th 10am-5.30pm with guest speakers, some of which include Melanie Jeannotte who featured in Calgary’s 40 under 40 entrepreneurs, Lana Wells of The University of Calgary and Laura Wershler from the Society for Menstrual Research . The event will also involve a range of workshops designed
to unite and enhance the women’s cultural and educational experienc-es; consisting of wine tasting, money manage-ment, yoga, felting, pho-tography and life coach-ing. The afternoon will offer an affordable light lunch and refresh-ments, as well as a musical performance by Britt Meierhoffer – aka Goodnightmares
Rachel Cline, one of the organizers said, “I am so excited to be involved in this event for the second year running. We listened to the feedback from the women of the Elk Valley and have added more pampering ses-sions such as massage and mani and pedi’s as well as the very popular tarot readings’.
Following the success of last years event we are keeping this free (door donations to local women’s groups) how-
ever we strongly sug-gest that people register for the workshops and the pampering sessions ahead of time, as spaces are limited. This can be done at our website, http://goddessrisingfer-nie.blogspot.ca/
Tanya Malcolm the other event organizer said, “The other very exciting new aspect of this years event is that the silent auction is being run on line in advance of the event, however you will need to be there on the day to ensure you make the winning bid. The Facebook page holds all the details of what priz-es are on offer and how much to bid. We have amazing offers from many restaurants in Fernie, photographers, retail and services.”
IWD was founded in 1910 and now takes place in countries throughout the world
with thousands of events on every conti-nent and a global col-lective of women taking part. It was designed as a strategy to promote equal rights and suf-
frage for women. There is now an annual theme and this year’s theme is ‘Inspiring Change’.
“The story of wom-en’s struggle for equal-ity belongs to no single
feminist nor to any one organisation but the collective efforts of all who care about human rights” ~Gloria Steinem.

With Speak Your Mind, the Kootenay Women’s Show quickly approach-ing, it is important that people get to know some of the strong women behind the businesses that have invested in platinum-level sponsor-ship of the event.
Cheryl Webb, a partner in Wells Photographic Design with Len Waddell, is proud to note that the studio is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year.
Q: When did you buy the business?
A: It was founded by George Wells, and my father bought it in the 60s. Eventually, I had to bid for the business and
I won. And I knew the business. I started clean-ing lab tanks and toi-lets and doing the grunt work in the darkroom when I fell in love with it. The art, to see how it affected families and the creativity spoke to me. To be able to freeze that moment in time is amazing.
Q: What is it like for a woman in your field?
A: When I started there was only one other female photogra-pher in my city. Back then, there was always a female assistant. When I started everyone was surprised that I made the leap to photography.
It was totally a man’s world. This whole busi-
ness is very math and science based. Sort of a man’s world—women didn’t do that back then. Now women outnumber men in our field.
Q: What is the best part of what you do?
A: The look on some-one’s face when they pick up their portrait. When they see it and see we have captured their essence. Pictures are forever. The images I create today, someone will sit down and in 50 years talk about it with their grandchildren.
Q: Do you have a per-sonal hero?
A: My hero is not some Superwoman or larger than life character, it is the woman with the
courage to fight a breast cancer diagnosis, the individual who stands up for their convic-tions, a volunteer who gives up the little free time they have to help others and make a dif-ference. It’s the people who give selflessly of themselves. It’s parents who are inspirational and empower their chil-dren to be everything they can be; these are the parents I had.

The Aqamnik School is currently trying to raise funds for a much needed playground.
The school, having been recently construct-ed has no playground. Having tried and been unsuccessful at attain-ing an Aviva Fund grant for the playground, the students are sell-ing bulbs, plants and seeds from the Vesey Fundraising Program. The school earns 50 per cent of everything it sells.
All you have to do is fill out the order form with the buyers name and address and get a cheque made out to St. Mary̓s Indian Band for the total amount. You can also pay with debit card or cash at the school. Please return orders by April 1st. You will receive your order in early May.
The school is also rais-ing awareness in other ways, having a youtube channel where they post fun videos outlining the need and how far staff are ready to go to get the playground. You can visit the Kootenay Advertiser’s website for a link to the channel.
For more information on how you can help, contact Lynne Davis, school secretary at [email protected] or call 250-489-5183.

Each year billions of pounds of toxic compounds are released into the envi-ronment and despite our awareness and efforts to protect ourselves, these compounds end up in our food, air, water and, of course, in us. Persistent organic pollutants (POP's) are compounds that are produced through indus-trial processes that do not degrade in the environment. Small exposures over time build up in tissues and have been shown to impair liver function and contribute to fatty liver by research-ers at the School of Public Health in Minnesota. A publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association linked bisphe-nol A (a chemical used to make plastics and white dental fillings) to metabolic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Chronic low grade expo-sure to herbicides have been shown to cause mito-chondrial damage leading to insulin resistance and an increased risk for type II diabetes and heavy met-als have been known for years to increase the risk for a variety of diseases. Long before disease sets in
the body typically begins to express symptoms asso-ciated with these types of toxins and a simple ques-tionnaire can give clues to the degree of toxins in your system (contact our office for one such questionnaire). Fatigue, brain fog, aches and pains, depression, bloating and poor sleep are clues of toxicity. Under normal circumstances your body is able to rid itself of these unwanted toxins. Sometimes, however, the exposure is too great or the body’s ability to clear these toxins is limited and they build up to dangerous levels and begin to cause health problems. Your diet plays a key role in both your expo-sure to toxins and your abil-ity to clear them and eating a diet rich in organic veg-etables and fruit is the best place to start. For added help you can use well-designed detoxification systems that enhance your body's natural detoxifica-tion processes while also giving enough nutrition for regular daily activities. Support your detoxification pathways and experience more energy, clearer think-ing and improved sleep.

Things to See & Do
Things to See & Do
These words speak to our hearts because they are truth. When our beautiful Jacob died 7 years ago, we felt like time would stand still, waiting for us to catch our breath. But, alas time waits for no man
and the sun did rise and the sun did set. And the seasons were indeed filled with both happiness and tears. Truth be told.
It has been seven years since we lost our Jake. Seven years of his absence.
This year, we want to talk about his life. We want to share all the funny things he said and did. We want to tell everyone about the night he backed into a tree with his mom’s car and told her it was
a hit and run. We want to giggle when we pulled the bark and branches off the back bumper and we want to remember the look
on his face when he had to re-tell his story again.
We want to share with everyone how he dressed up as E.T. at Ashley’s birthday party and terrified all of the six-year-old girls in
their party dresses. We want to share the time we needed a female partner for a mixed doubles tournament and he dressed up as a
woman and played a great game of tennis. We ache for people to know about his skills as a chef -- the magic he brought to many a
meal or late night snack. To tell you about the hundreds of times we would find him sleeping on the couch in front of ‘Food Network’ or
on other occasions another channel he should not have been on!
We want to remember his laugh, his teasing, his crazy brown and blue eyes, his noisy truck, his big bear hugs. Remembering his love
for his siblings, his joy in talking to the elderly and less fortunate. When Jake left to go up north he set off on his infectious journey of developing new friends. When we see those friends coming onto Facebook early in February saying they miss him now seven years
later, we are appreciative. The impact he had on others speaks volumes about the amazing boy and man he was.
We are grateful for his love and his life. Lest we not forget - we must keep his memory alive. We are eternally grateful that we
had 31 years with his love. Life will never be the same, and it is changing always.
Your loving family

Eco version of world’s top seller stingy on gasThe Toyota Corolla is the best selling car of all time, world-wide, selling 1.3 million units in Canada alone since it was introduced in 1966.To say the Corolla is a big deal for Toyota is an under-statement as it represents 47 per cent of all passenger sales for Toyota Canada. But the Corolla is also a big deal for Canada as it is made in Ontario and the Cambridge assembly plant. Cambridge was selected as the lead plant for vehicle development, as it makes cars for all of North America, the Corolla’s biggest market. This new 2014 Corolla has been on sale here since the fall of 2013 and by the num-ber I see on the road, it looks to be a hit already. For those that place fuel economy over everything, the Corolla Eco might just be worth a look as it takes an already thrifty car and squeezes even more out of each litre of fuel.
LooksOne major criticism of Toyota as a brand, and the Corolla, in particular, has been drab styling. Toyota recently has been walking a nice line between updating their lineup to be more progressive but also keeping their loyal buyers happy. The Corolla is sold in several different trim levels, starting at $15,995 to get the base CE, but the reality is that most Canadians will upgrade to the $19,215 S (Sport) or the LE for $19,500. To upgrade to this $20,500 LE Eco model is $1,035 over the S model and $750 over the regular LE. I prefer the S trim for its more aggressive 17-inch wheels compared to the LE and LE Eco, which come with smaller 16-inch wheels. Regardless, this model is a massive step forward in terms of delivering an
eye-catching design. The lower stance, standard LED projector headlamps and sleeker bodywork now make this a car people would be proud to own.
InsideThe dash is wide and flat with easy to see, and use, radio and heat controls, but the look is fresh and contemporary. The seats now sit lower in the car to make room for the slightly lower roofline, but I found getting in and out no problem. The seats provide excellent support and comfort. The back seat has a lot more legroom because the wheelbase of this new model has been stretched by 10 cms. The car is also
slightly wider, making hip room impressive. Overall the cabin is large and airy and nicely put together, considering the price. Since the S, LE or Eco models will be the sales leaders, Toyota has kitted all three out with a 6.1-inch touch-screen radio that includes Bluetooth streaming audio, phone connectivity and a backup camera. Faux leather seats are available on the S and LE but not the Eco. The good news is that all models come with heated front seats.
DriveAll but the Eco model come with a 132hp version of the 1.8L 4-cylinder engine carried over from the last car. The Eco gets a 140hp version that comes with Toyota’s Valevematic technology that helps to pump out the extra 8hp, yet improves fuel economy. The base CE is sold with either a 6-speed manual or the 4-speed automatic found in the last model. The only other model to be offered with a manual is the S trim. That leaves the LE and Eco with a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT),
and this unit as an option in the S trim. The upside to buying the Eco is an improved fuel economy score. The regular LE with a CVT has a combined city and highway rating of 5.9L/100km but the Eco model drops that down to 5.7L/100km.The penalty for this economy is a lack of driving spirit. I drove the S model at the Quebec City launch and expected a similar performance because this Eco has eight more horse-power. Not the case. I would take the minor fuel economy hit and buy the S or regular LE instead.
VerdictThe Corolla is a fine update, Toyota set out to make a roomier, more stylish and value packed car. The Eco has no options avail-able so it sticks to the $20,150 base price. I do enjoy the new interior, the styling is an improvement and many families will welcome the space.
The LowdownPower: 1.8L 4-cylinder with 132hp or 140hpFill-up: 6.5L/4.6L/100km (city/highway Eco) Sticker price: $15,995-$20,250

Bob McHugh
Honda introduced the world’s first hot-hybrid-hatch with the launch of its CR-Z for the 2011 model year.
The CR-Z is a stylish, driver-focused, small two-seat hatch-back that’s fun-to-drive, and it offers great fuel economy. It’s a contemporary take on an older (last sold in 1991) and much loved pocket-rocket called the Honda CRX,
Reliability has been outstand-ing and the CR-Z’s resale value on the used market is above av-erage, a nice bonus for owners. It is based on a chassis shared with the Honda Fit, an undeni-ably more practical (with seats for 4/5) vehicle option that lacks the style and sporty ap-peal of the CR-Z.
Under its wedge-like aerody-namic design is a lightweight yet rigid structure. Its tapering roofline leads to an abrupt tail end with a double-window rear hatch. While the second-ary lower glass panel does provide a driver some addition rear vision, overall rearward sightlines are still a drawback. The suspension is also on the firm side and combined with its short wheelbase uneven road surfaces can make the ride choppy.
The sport theme continues on the inside with bucket-style seats that offer more side sup-port on both the seatback and cushion. It also comes with large storage bins in the rear (instead of seats) that are covered by a drop-down cargo area divider when expanded trunk space is needed.
Under hood, there is a 1.5-li-tre i-VTEC four-cylinder gas engine that’s teamed with Honda’s compact (10-kilowatt) Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to provide a maximum of 122 horsepower @ 6000
rpm. It’s essentially the same (mild-hybrid) drive system that’s also used in the Honda Insight and Honda Civic Hybrid. City/ highway fuel economy (with auto) is rated at 5.6/5.0 L/100km.
The CR-Z, however, does offer two unique hybrid-drive dif-ferences. A six-speed manual transmission option being the first and a three-mode opera-tional feature, which allows a driver to choose between Sport, Normal or Econ (Economy) driv-ing styles, the second.
The automatic option is a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that provide seven-speed se-quential gear-ratio control. The sport mode has to be selected to use the paddle shifters, but it’s an impressively quick acting feature that’s fun to use.
The Econ mode “smoothes” throttle inputs but will still kick down the transmission and give full throttle if the driver floors the gas pedal. It also dampens steering response, air condi-tioning use and activates the idle stop/start feature sooner, which is a big fuel saver in stop-and-go city driving. Nor-mal mode is a middle-blend of the Sport and Econ modes.
No significant changes were made to CR-Z for the 2012 model year, other than vehicles with a red exterior could be ordered with black seat fabric. The 2013 CR-Z did get a few up-dates, including a more power-ful battery pack, a standard re-verse camera and Bluetooth. It was also offered in a Premium trim edition.
A Honda legend returns with a modern twist, the Honda CR-Z offers agile handling and a more engaging driving expe-rience than previously available in a small hybrid vehicle.

Yes, you can buy fun cars for under 30 grand.
A few weeks ago, I recom-mended five fun coupes for singles, whose base prices didn’t start with a three. Read-ers demanded more so here are five more cars that are a little easier on the wallet in purchase and operation.
Disclaimer, you don’t have to be single and willing to mingle to fall in love with these ve-hicles. In fact, some of them are family friendly. No really, they are.
Ford Focus ST- $29,999Hot hatch? I think so.Ford’s Focus ST (ST meaning
Sports Technologies) is quite the exciting ride.
As soon as you sit inside the Ford Focus ST cabin, you’re embraced by Recaro sport seats that hug you and don’t let go. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox that’s then connected to a 2.0L High-Out-put EcoBoost I-4 engine.
The high-output engine puts out 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s a herd of horses under the hood, but driving this sport-tuned version of ST is actually quite agreeable in the city.
Chevrolet Sonic RS - $23,995
The Sonic RS Hatchback might not be the first choice of “performance” vehicle on your list, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added.
This five-door has some cool features like: a unique RS liftgate-mounted rear spoiler, 17-inch Midnight Silver paint-ed-aluminum wheels, Lane Departure Warning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrasting stitching and flat-bottom design, and leather-ap-pointed seating surfaces with ‘sueded’ microfibre inserts.
That’s on top of seating for five and a powerplant com-prised of a 1.4L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 138 horsepow-er and 148 lb-ft of torque.
Fiat 500 Abarth - $20,995Anytime you see a scorpion
on something – or in real life – you can count on there being some sort of sting. The Fiat 500 Abarth is no different, except this sting makes you smile.
This pint-sized two-door might look somewhat cutesy, but the terrestrial arachnid badging denotes otherwise.
Turn the ignition on and the rumble of the dual ex-haust comes to life. It’s any-thing but tame in tone. Put the five-speed, heavy duty manual transmission into gear and hopefully you’ll be able to make good use of the 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. That’s the kind of power being generated from its 1.4L, MultiAir turbocharged engine.
Along with a performance tuned-suspension, perfor-mance brakes and 16-inch wheels, this Fiat might be small, but makes up any “size matters” issues with its dy-namic performance.
Honda Civic SI (Coupe/Sedan) - $26,245/$26,250
Take the exceptional reli-ability of Honda, its popular-selling Civic coupe/sedan, lace it with a potent engine and some cool gadgetry and you have the SI trim.
Up until only a few years ago, the Civic SI was only of-
fered in coupe format, but that changed in 2007. Those who wanted performance and practicality would be granted access to such pleasures of life.
Setting it apart from its tam-er siblings is a 2.4-litre engine producing 201 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft of torque. It also comes standard with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. Not to mention a 6-speed manual transmission.
Whether opting for two or four doors, you can’t go wrong.
Scion FR-S - $26,450The return of the fun-to-drive
rear-wheel drive sports coupe that’s priced under $30K can be linked to the Scion FR-S. You could also say it is linked with the Subaru BRZ as these four-seater, two-door vehicles were a joint venture product between the two Japanese brands.
The FR-S features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine, de-veloped in collaboration with Subaru. It combines Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s D-4S injection system. The result is 200 natu-rally aspirated horses and
151 lb-ft of torque and can be matched with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed
automatic transmission. The back seats might not
be incredibly comfortable for
rear passengers but all the fes-tivities are happening up front anyway.

Five classics you’d never guess are so valuable
By Rob Sass
Pull quote: “Versions of the venerable ’50s VW Microbus can bring money that would shock the hippies who ran them into the ground in the 1960s.”
Some classics wear their price tags on their sleeves.
Look at a fuel-injected ’57 Chevy Bel Air, and it’s imme-
diately apparent that it’s valu-able merchandise.
On the other hand, there are the sleepers of the classic car world, the cars that are worth a lot of money but it’s only obvious to those in-the-know. For example, few would guess that the proceeds from a re-stored VW microbus could put a kid through college.
Here are five you’d never
suspect of being quite pricey:1. Volkswagen “Samba”
Microbus: There’s a simple rule of thumb with VW Micro-buses: More windows equals more money. The 21- and 23-window versions of the venerable ’50s VW Microbus can bring money that would shock the hippies who ran them into the ground in the 1960s—around 70 grand for a nicely restored one. They’ve even been known to break $100,000 at the right auction.
2. Fiat Jolly: The Jolly was an open-top version of the classic Fiat 500 that was meant to be stowed onboard yachts and used as transport in places like Monaco and Positano. They have no doors, the seats are made of wicker and the tops are meant only to provide shade. Appallingly cute, the pint-sized Jolly can sell for upwards of $70,000.
3. Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser: The classic Jeep-like 1960-1984 Toyota Land Cruis-er was one tough vehicle—so tough that they invited hor-rific abuse, which explains the dearth of clean examples. A nicely restored one sold at an auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., last January for $88,000. Some are said to have sold for $100,000-plus. In response to FJ40s getting so expensive, first-generation 4Runners are starting to increase in value. Don’t say you weren’t told!
4. Ford Bronco: The hum-ble 1966-77 Ford Bronco was a product of the same team that brought us the classic 1964½ Mustang. Unlike the Mustang, which sat on Ford Falcon underpinnings, the first Bronco was a unique platform. The size and shape were just right, and collectors have latched onto them in droves. Totally stock, unrusted, Bron-cos without cut fenders and flares are rare; it takes around $30,000 to get a nice one.
5. BMW Isetta: Prior to becoming known as the ulti-mate driving machine, BMW sold the super-expensive V-8 507 roadster and the tiny egg-like Isetta microcar out of the same showrooms. It’s no shock that the gorgeous 507 roadster sells for a ton of money, but the fact that Isettas can pull more than $40,000 is surprising indeed.

The folks over a GM felt it was time to raise the bar and with this latest incarnation of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.
And indeed it took a major step forward by anybody’s estimation. Competition is fierce in the ½-ton pickup market and with heavy con-centration on fuel consump-tion; it’s tough to find a bal-ance between fuel economy and a strong capable truck.
But the Silverado designers achieved that balance and were recognized very public-ly for that achievement. The awards presentation at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit saw GM haul away top honors for the Corvette Stingray and Silverado pickup, which were named North American Car and Truck of the year.
You can’t just beef up a suspension and still expect a smooth ride. Chev did: the Silverado utilizes finely tuned
shock absorbers that respond to small vibrations and tackle the big bounces with ease. I admit I had my doubts. Driv-ing the Silverado over a pot-hole-laden road did change the dynamics of this truck on how it handled but the shocks adjusted themselves perfectly.
The frame mounts at the back of the cab are hydrau-lic and this helps to control any vibration. The rear axle size has been increased to handle the larger torque out-put from the engine. Speak-ing of engines the Silverado offers three engine choices. The first is a 4.3L V6 with a 285 horsepower and 305 foot pounds of torque. An all-aluminum 5.3L V8 with 355 horsepower and a 6.2L EcoTec V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 450 foot pounds of torque. This engine also has active noise cancel-lation, very similar to good quality headphones!
The transmission is a six-speed electronically con-trolled automatic with two overdrive gears. It has an estimated combined fuel economy of 13/8.7 L/100 km. Although my real world num-bers were not that close, the transmission undoubtedly helped push a tank of gas a little farther than I expected. Properly equipped, this Sil-verado can tow up to 5216 kg (11,500 lb) which is im-pressive for a ½ ton pickup.
The redesigned interior of-fers more leg room and is easily accessed through the larger doors. Stain resistant cloth seats or optional leath-er seats are very comfortable. The glove box is a two-piece design and the centre con-
sole has plenty of room for files and junk to go missing for years!
The steering wheel controls and other knobs on the dash are within reachable distance from the driver and larger enough that they can be used while wearing work gloves.
My tester was equipped with Mylink system that ba-sically controls everything. The voice recognition is easy to use and can respond to normal speech patterns. Bluetooth capabilities allow easy pairing of any smart phone with very little effort and accessing your music is a breeze.
The rear bumper has steps built into it on both corners of the truck, making the job of climbing in the back an easy task. The tailgate features EZ-lift hardware that makes lowering the tailgate a one handed job. An available LED lights mounted under the box rails lights up the cargo area and makes every nook and cranny visible. Many in-novative improvements were made to this truck to keep up with the consumer demands and the result will help spur Canadian sales.

Our GUIDANCE • YOUR DECISIONS• We work with your local funeral home
“Making things easier for your executor.”
yes, you can run our ad. If it’s possible change it to www.purpleshield.ca
Talk to your parents about their fears, needs, priorities, and wishes as they get older.
Have the name and phone number of your parents’ doctor, lawyer, pharmacist, hair dresser, grocery store, cab service, and seniors’ transportation service in case you should need to call them.
Make a few calls to find out about seniors’ services in your parents’ community, such as meal delivery services, homemaker programs, adult daycare, in-home healthcare, meal companion services, pet therapy programs, etc.
If you live far away, make sure that you have the name of a neighbour, friend, or volunteer who can check in on your parents if there’s trouble.
Make sure their home is safe. Install smoke detectors that work, install anti-scald devices, fall-proof the house, and make sure there is adequate lighting.
Post important phone numbers, including emergency numbers, where they can easily see them.
Purchase a medical alert system so that your parents can push a button for help from anywhere in the house.
Make their home user-friendly. Use lever-style faucets and cabinet handles, raise toilet seats, install handrails and grab bars, and so on.
Visit seniors’ housing facilities so you know what’s out there, and if necessary, put your parents on waiting lists.
Make sure your parents have a will and power of attorney that is up to date in order to avoid any future problems.
Call them every day or two just to say hello and to see if everything’s alright. If you can’t do this, have family, friends, or volunteers alternate calls or visits.
Encourage them to stay active. Look into bowling leagues, bingo nights, book clubs for seniors, dance lessons for the elderly, travel tours, seniors’ associations, etc. They will thank you for it.
If you feel that your parents’ driving skills have become questionable, perhaps it’s time to make some changes. Start by elevating their pedals, raising their seat, and installing larger mirrors. Have their eyesight checked by an ophthalmologist and talk to their pharmacist and doctor about their prescriptions to see if their medication could be affecting their driving skills. Look into seniors’driving safety courses.

Whether it’s a ques-tion of age, illness, or lo ne liness, many seniors must eventu-ally make the decision to leave their house or apartment and choose a private retirement
home in which to spend the last years of their lives. Is this the situation you find your-self in? If so, remember these two key words: needs and priorities.
Visiting all the homes in your area is point-less unless you have
already defined your needs and priorities, either as a single per-son or as a couple. For example, is the retirement home able to provide the level of care you need, with on-site medical per-sonnel and assistance in dressing or bathing? Which services are you looking for? Full ser-vice meals, housework, and laundry? You must also decide if you would like to have an
alarm system in your room or apartment, a par king space, and whether you would like to be close to a hos-pital or grocery store. Of course, your budget is a primary factor, so find out exactly which services are included in the monthly rent.
Once you have a clear idea of your needs and you’ve made a list of all the questions con-cerning your prio rities, it is time to visit pro-
spective homes. Be sure to call ahead to make ap pointments, and invite a loved one to come with you, if at all possible.
Above all, avoid hasty decisions and don’t yield to pressure tactics. This move is an im portant transition in your life that requires careful and thorough planning. Before sign-ing a lease, be sure to make a second, unan-nounced visit to your retirement home of choice. A surprise visit will give you a glimpse into the unscripted re a lities of the home you’re most drawn to.
Choosing the new home with proper care and attention to detail

We probably all know of at least one elderly couple where the wife is
caring for a husband suf-fering from a debilitat-ing disease, or where the
husband is looking after a wife who can no lon-ger be considered inde-pendent. These kinds of care arrangements often leave the primary caregiver in a situation where his or her own health is compromised.
There are many differ-ent ways to make the most of these visits. For example, you might be able to work with the caregiving senior to visit at a particular time so that he or she can attend a fitness class or a support group. If set-ting a specific day and time isn’t possible, then you could suggest to the caregiver when you arrive that he or she is welcome to go out for a walk or do some other relaxing activity. This allows for a break from their demanding role, and it also allows you some time alone with the invalid to develop a rewarding the rapeutic relationship.
