Parents will be able to browse the displays, chat withta rom various organizations, get support to fll out sub-idy orms, and take home resources. Tere will be stories,
ome simple art and playdough activities or the children, and a ree, nutritious lunch will be provided – even somegreat door prizes.
Funding or this ree special event was part o the frstound o granting provided by the Slocan Valley Legacy Fund.It aligns nicely with Financial Literacy Month in Canada,”
co-host Alison Salo, the Slocan Valley CBAL coordinatornotes. “We know amilies ace the pressures o high hous-

Dispelling Bat MythsAre bats really blind? Do they want to suck your
blood? Tese are some o the questions that educa-tors around the Columbia Basin are answering. Justin time or Halloween, dynamic and skilled educatorsrom the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP)are providing youth programs on bats. “Bats are ac-tually very shy, clean creatures” says Juliet Craig, Co-ordinating Biologist or the KCBP. “Tere are so many myths about bats. Tey are extremely benefcial in eat-
ing nocturnal ying insects including mosquitoes, andcycling nutrients rom wetlands to upland orests”.
Trough a partnership with the KCBP and WildVoices or Kids, educators are able to provide reeschool programs to teach children about the amazingworld o bats, including their unique eatures, theirrole in ecosystems, and our local bat species. Studentswill get a virtual tour o bats rom around the world, eavesdrop on their echolocation calls, and explorecurrent issues in bat conservation.
“Hal o the bat species in BC are at risk” says Craig.
“With the approach o white nose syndrome, a diseasethat has been decimating bat populations in easternNorth America, it is more important than ever to getcommunities involved in bat conservation, includingour youth.” Funded by the Columbia Basin rust, theKCBP approaches bat conservation in a number o ways, including assisting land owners with bat issues, promoting the annual bat count to monitor popula-tions, and promoting the installation o bat houses. odate, the KCBP has provided almost 500 visits to localresidents, and identifed over 350 roost sites or seven
bat species.o fnd out more about the Kootenay Community

Supporting Te BereavedFor those who have lost someone through death, the
cycle o loss through detachment, despair and anger torecovery can be a lonely, rightening and overwhelmingexperience, even when amily and riends are trying tosupport us. A grie support group provides a sae, sup-portive environment where no participants are expectedto say or do anything they are uncomortable with. In-dividuals who have participated in a Hospice grie sup-port group learn that the way they are experiencing their
grie is normal and that basically we all grieve in the sameway. Grie is a healthy response to loss that needs to be ac-knowledged and expressed beore we can move on. Work-ng through eelings about losses, and sharing them with
others who are also grieving, decreases our isolation andoneliness while helping us learn how to experience and
work through our pain.
Nelson & District Hospice Society is ofering a ree Grief Support Series or anyone grieving the loss o someonethrough death. Te group will run or six weeks startingTursday, November 7 through Tursday, December 12
rom 10 am to noon. Pre-registration is required but at-tendance is ree.
For more inormation and/or to register, please call Nel-son Hospice at 250-352-2337 or email [email protected]. All calls are condential. Donations grateully accepted

“We couldn’t be more heartened by the response fromour members,” beams Board Director and Member LoansCommittee Chair Susan Morrison. “Tis campaign hasbeen about so much more than the money… hitting the
$1 million mark is also about the excitement, trust andgood will that’s behind every dollar loaned.”
Tough the process o making a member loan takes only a matter o minutes, Morrison says many people are stay-ing longer to talk about the Co-op. “Our Member Loansteam keeps telling me how meaningul they are fndingthe experience o closing these loans. Members are shar-ing their avourite stories about the Co-op; some going allthe way back to its roots as a buying club in South Slocan.Tey are all proud o the Co-op they own and how it’s con-tributed to a healthy community and local economy.”
“Tere is no typical member making a loan,” says Mem-ber Loans coordinator Marya Skrypiczajko. “Te cam-paign is a reection o the diversity o the whole member-ship. We are receiving support rom ounding members, local armers, members who have childhood memorieso shopping at the Co-op, new members who have justsigned up this year and everyone in between. What they have in common is that they are all excited about helpingto build a riendly, healthy, community-owned ood store.”

Author Reading And Artist
Reception At Te Nelson Library Te arts collide this month at the Nelson Public Library during November and Decmber, when Argenta artist DebBorsos exhibits pastel landscapes, all o them inspired by books she has loved. Tree authors whose books have beenhonoured – Anne DeGrace, Rita Moir, and Holley Rubin-sky – will join Borsos in a reading and reception on ues-day, November 5 at 7pm.
“My childhood home was always a reuge or books, andthough there are no authors in my amily, we are a herd o artists – as well as hoarding bibliophiles,” explains Borsos.
So it delighted me to be ofered an exhibit here in a library. What better gallery to share my visual stories in?”
Borsos has played with the concept beore. “Several yearsago, I put together a collection o work based on listeningto CBC Radio or a year and then creating paintings whichwere inspired by stories I had heard,” she says. She calledthat exhibition Every Story ells a Picture.
Georgia O’Keee’s biography A Woman on Paper pro-vides the title or this exhibition, as well as inspiration ora painting. Other books that have inspired works includeTe Perection o the Morning by Sharon Butala, Te Far
Country by Nevil Shute, and Where the Wild Tings Are by Maurice Sendak, among others.
Local books include Moir’s Te Windshif Line, Rubin-sky’s Beyond Tis Point , and DeGrace’s Wind ails. Borsoswill discuss her process and the authors will read rom theirworks during the evening.
Borsos creates vivid impressionist landscapes in pastel, sometimes using fne grit industrial sandpaper as a suraceor a remarkable intensity o pigment. Te area in the northend o the lake where she lives provides infnite inspira-tion in creating her pastel landscapes. Her work has ound
homes in private collections around the world.“I am a big an o Deb’s work,” says DeGrace. “Her landscapes
combine sensitivity and keen observation with remarkabledepth – just like a good book. o be included is an honour.”

Hello! My name is Mia. I don’t like to brag but just look at
my picture, I am a very beautiul lady and I heard the shelter
staf say that I have a good-natured personality. I love to be
social and give head butts and kisses. I would suit a amily
with older children as I tend to dislike being ‘over-handled’,
but I love to sit on your lap and purr away, just appreciating
your afection. So please come down to the Nelson SPCAShelter or a visit and give me a cuddle. I can say without a
doubt that I would be a great addition to your amily. You
can also call 250-352-7178 or more inormation.

“My parents were aced with selling their home ater many happy years living in the Kinnaird bench.
As I live out o the area it was important to me that they hire an experienced Realtor to sell their home.
We met with Joni and soon realized that she was well qualifed. We were all very pleased with her service
and proessionalism throughout the whole listing and selling process.
I would highly recommend Joni to any other seniors. She’ll take care o all the details. Thanks Joni!”

Selkirk College Gala cont’d from pg 50
One o the key skills being developed in the Gala prep-aration is learning music in a short period o time andthen perorming it live. “Tat is the reality o being a pro-essional musician,” says Parenteau. “We are decreasingthe contact to the music or the students. Tey need tobe good perormers, but just as important they must beef cient music readers.”
It’s a project welcomed by the second year class. “I’mreally excited about it,” says keyboard student Rory
Hayes-Anderson. “Tese are skills I currently don’t haveand in the next ew weeks will get a chance to grow underthe pressure o having an important perormance.”
