Poor Codes Cost Money without Improving Safety

• $6 billion a year wasted in operational costs because of unnecessary codes and standards

• $10 billion a year wasted in capital costs because of unnecessary codes and standards

• Small things could have a profound effect nationwide

• $50 per US citizen per year

Adoption of Unified Codes• Working on long term plan to develop a unified

set of recommended codes for adoption• Objectives

o Improve quality and increase access to healthcare using cost savings from conflicting, unnecessary and costly codes and regulations with little ROI

o With unified voice, backed by identified values, leading the change to national codes.

Communication of Regulatory Issues

• ASHE learns about local issues from chapter advocacy liaisons

• Advocacy liaisons learn about national issues from ASHE

www.ashe.org/advocacyhighway

Advocacy Liaisons• Advocacy leaders can help – but they have to

know about the problem.• Communications through the Advocacy Highway

are critical.• Advocacy Liaisons or Chapter Presidents must

attend quarterly conference calls

Our Challenge:• The health care facility management field has an

aging workforceo  2012 Salary Survey showed 40% of health care

facility managers were older than 55• Little awareness among younger generations of

the health care facility management profession

ASHE Internship Program

• ASHE and Schneider Electric have teamed up to create the ASHE internship program

• Develop University relationships and identify intern candidates• Support ASHE member and chapter participation in hosting interns• Create a program to promote the profession and sustain the future
