In what’s reckoned to be a record, the wharf was begun last Friday, on site in Bickerstaff Road, on the banks of the Otamatea River, and due to be completed down to the finishing touches as The Lifestyler went to press on Monday evening.

“It’s been a bit like climbing Everest,” said the chair of the Maungaturoto 150th committee, Albie Paton.

“But you can now say, like Sir Ed: ‘we knocked the bastard off!’

Over the past year, as preparations for the 150th anniversary of the arrival of pioneers in the Albertland settlement of the Northern Kaipara, and the establishment of Maungaturoto, the town has been transformed, with the wharf project a key factor.

The new structure replaces some worn and rickety stumps sticking up from the river, and the work required some extensive paperwork for permits and resource consents. It is linked to the town by a series of pathways, which will be the scene of a settlers’ landing re-enactment and parade next weekend.

Much of the wharf was prefabricated at the Barnbuilder’s yard in Mountain Road, and the three-day construction phase was over-seen by local builder, Tim McGill.

If you’re looking for a bargain in furniture or household goods, it could be worthwhile to spend Sunday morning on November 10 at the annual Dargaville Lions Auction. Organiser Bob Morgan (pictured) says the event has been held for more than 45 years and is expected to raise more than $3000 for Lions community projects. Among the items for auctioning are beds, chairs, pieces of art and ironing boards. The auction will start at 9am oppose the Ritchies depot on Beach St.

Paparoa School held its annual Pet and Show Day, with principal Kim Tavinor delighted at the large turnout, which was the biggest for many years. In all, 40 animals, with a predominance of woolly creatures, were paraded in the school grounds. Here, young Sebastian Wright shows off his Supreme Champion Lamb.

There’s nothing as iconic as a sunset and some of the most beautiful sunsets happen at Pouto. Whangarei Camera Club member Kellie Extance caught this one in January, shooting through the Pouto Lighthouse on her Canon 7D camera using a wide-angled lens. She says Pouto has a special magic. “It’s untamed. It’s a place that’s near and dear to our hearts.” Ms Extance has formed her own business, Kellie Extance Photography, and will be exhibiting next month at Whangarei’s Shutter Room Gallery.

Waterways initiative seeksto bring in jobs and visitors Council acts on rates

by Paul Campbell

The combining of several initiatives that aim to use Kaipara waterways to generate jobs and increase visitor numbers received an enthusiastic response at a meeting in Dargaville last week.

Combining work already done and projects planned, by Kaipara Lifestyler owner Allan Mortensen, John Hansen from Hansen Marine and others, it is expected to more readily attract funding and public support.

Mr Mor tensen says the project has four stages.

“The first is to develop an overall strategic plan and the second to get the Dargaville public wharf restored. The next step will be to obtain a vessel larger than the current operator, The Daisy, to accommodate more passengers on river and harbour cruises, and in the long term have a scheduled service between Dargaville and Parakai.

“The last stage is to build the Echo, a scow that is now a cafe on the Picton wharf, which was built in Te Kopuru and gained fame delivering supplies around the Pacific for the US Army during the Second World War.

“The exploits of the Echo were turned into the 1960s’ hit movie The Wackiest Ship in the Army.”

Kaipara District Council chair of commissioners. John Robertson said the project “focussed on what makes Dargaville special.”

While council had no money for the project the commissioners would help with funding applications and contacts.

Mr Mortensen said costs could be considerable.

“Upgrading the wharf is likely to cost up to $100,000, while building a replica of the Echo could be in the vicinity of $1.5 to $2 million.

“Building the Echo might be a four to five year project, but repairing the wharf

and having a tourist boat operating out of Dargaville could happen a lot quicker. A boat on the river, and building the Echo locally will provide jobs and skills and help attract people into the area.”

The tourist boat and the Echo would be owned by an incorporated society on behalf of the local community. Although much of the work required will be done by volunteers, professional planning and management was needed to ensure things happen.

“It is important we get leaders with passion to take this project forward,” said Mr Robertson. “Without passion it won’t happen.”

The Kaipara District Council (Validation of Rates & Other Matters) Bill got its first reading on June 12 and parliament’s Local Government and Environment Select Committee is due to report back on it by December.

Meanwhile the Mangawhai Citizen’s and Ratepayers Association has recorded that one ratepayer has received a formal demand from his bank, threatening to take money from a family trust account.

Mr Andrew Mackintosh has written to Westpac Bank over the demand, stating that the “KDC has acknowledged that all the rates demands it has made, including the ones relating to this property, are invalid and illegal”. The proof of this is that the council has asked parliament to retrospectively validate them all. I.e. the rates are not currently valid.

“Until and unless parliament does that there can be no doubt whatsoever, by the council’s own admission, that the rates they are demanding are not lawful.”

However the council says it is confident that the rates for 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 have been lawfully set and payment of these is required.

“Where the property that is the subject of a rates arrears is also mortgaged, the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 allows councils to work with first mortgagees to recover rate arrears,” said community engagement  manager,Barbara Ware.

“Council is doing this where appropriate to do so. This is normal council practise throughout the local government sector.”

The Kaipara District Council has taken action through the banking system to recover unpaid rates, some of them the result of a rates strike over the cost blowout of the Mangawhai wastewater scheme, and the subject of a Rates Validation Bill now before parliament.

Still chance to seetop dancers in Dargaville

Kewpie Too back cruising

by Colin Patterson

With little more than a week to go, tickets are still available for the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s performance in Dargaville.

The Rotary Club of Dargaville is bringing the Ballet to town on Wednesday November 6 as part of its Tower Tutus on Tour programme in which it will make 47 performances across the country in a six-week period.

Its performance in Dargaville will mark the Rotary club’s 75th anniversary, while the Royal New Zealand Ballet is celebrating 60 years this year.

Rotary spokesman Brian Burnett says ticket sales have been steady. Premium tickets costing $25 for adults and $10 for children have sold out. But general tickets ($20 for adults and $5 for children) are still available.

However, Mr Burnett says people should be quick as demand is strong. “If you delay, you risk missing out. We don’t want people to be disappointed.”

He says ticket prices for the Dargaville performance are among the cheapest of any of the 47 performances across the country. The programme will include a selection of old favourites — such as Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf — and more contemporary pieces. Proceeds from ticket sales will pay the costs of

The annual harbour sightseeing schedule for the MV Kewpie Too began at Labour weekend, with the Kaipara Cruises flagship operating out of Pahi daily until next Sunday.

“We take a four-hour voyage of discovery to historic sites on the harbour, as well as idyllic spots that can be reached only by boat,” says skipper Terry Somers.

“We retrace old steamer and sailing ship routes and the itinerary includes a full and informative commentary on such things as old kauri mill sites, remote historic settlements, the 1860 Gittos Mission station, the historic Batley Hotel, and there’s a huge variety of ecology and birdlife along the rivers.

“The cruises all depart from the Pahi Wharf and we are in sheltered waters all the way through the Arapaoa and Otamatea waterways.”

Tea and coffee are available on board, and passengers are advised to bring their own packed lunch.

“Bookings are essential with fares at $35 for adults and $15 for children.”

Unicyclists show their stuff in Dargaville by Colin Patterson

But what if you have only one wheel? That’s no problem for the country’s top unicyclists who came to Dargaville to show their tricks and to take part in NZ Uni — the national championships for unicyclists. Organiser Chris Huriwai said before championships got underway

that the recent opening of the town’s skate park encouraged him to bring the event to Dargaville.

Last year’s event was in Hamilton and before that it was in Palmerston North, New Plymouth and Auckland.

As to why anyone would want to ride on one wheel, he has a simple answer. ”It’s a challenge. There are always new tricks to learn.”

Mr Huriwai says he was destined to be a unicyclist. “I got into it because it was weird. I enjoy weird things.”

As he has spent the last six months organising the event, Mr Huriwai was too busy to compete. However his business partner and Dargaville native Sam La

Hood was among the elite riders in the women’s events.

On Friday competitors got together at Dargaville Primary School. Flat events were held there on Saturday, while the jump and obstacle finals took place on Sunday.

For those wanting to give unicycling a go, the organisers had spare machines on hand and a specialist coach available to provide advice and safety tips.

Impressive heights were reached in the high jump contest

The whole park was utilised for the contest — one of the contestants seen here grinding down the rail on the pedal of his unicycle

The ‘breath’ of a kauri treeScience has created a new dimension in displays at The Kauri Museum in Matakohe, with electronics being used to show a kauri tree ‘breathing’.

“This new display takes data from trees outside the museum to a computer — generated screen inside,” says CEO Bet Nelley.

“Dr Jonathan Palmer, who was scientist in residence here last year, and Dr David Drew from Tasmania have recently visited and placed dendrometers around two kauri trees growing at the back of the museum.

“These young kauri are different species; one being the New Zealand Agathis australis and the other the Australian Agathis robusta.

This new display will educate visitors about how wood grows and a graph, will show how the tree stem size, in

millimetres, has varied over the last five to eight days.

The data is fed into a computer hard drive and accessories will process the data with the results showing on a kiosk that is running in the museum.

“It is like watching the lungs of a kauri tree as the trunk expands ever so slightly. The graph rises when the sun hits the leaves in the morning and then it falls back down in the evening.

“We have become aware that kauri trees do not grow in the winter but rather lay dormant. This is science for all to see.”

Still plenty of summerfun at Kai Iwi Lakes by Colin Patterson

Kai Iwi lakes — well prepared for the summer months

Visitors to the Kai Iwi Lakes this summer can expect a facility that will give them plenty of scope for outdoor recreational activities but with little cover from the summer sun.

Three years ago pine trees surrounding the three lakes 35km north of Dargaville were chopped down, as falling branches were considered to create a health and safety hazard. While much of the area has been replanted, the new planting is in native species which are slower growing.

However, Kaipara District Council community spaces manager Stephen Soole says the Taharoa Domain park ranger and campground manager have made significant progress in readying the area for the summer.

Toilets at the top of the top end of the northern most lake (Lake Waikere) have been closed as they were seldom used and expensive to maintain. Gates have been installed to prevent

vehicle access to some areas where replanting has taken place. Hot water showers have been installed at Pine Beach campground.

Mr Soole says campground bookings for the summer are already being taken.

In the longer term, the council is about to start a review of the Taharoa Domain Reserve Management Plan, the document that sets out how the lakes will be managed and what activities are permitted.

Mr Soole says the current plan dates from January 2002 and needs to be updated.

He says more details of the timing of the review will emerge after the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee next meets in December. “It will be a process under the Reserves Act. We’re at a very early stage. When the formal process kicks off it will be publicly notified. People will be able to make submissions.”

Mr Soole says the committee has no views on what should be in the updated plan, although it is keen to hear what the public thinks.

The time to celebrate arrives“Its taken a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated people, but now the time has arrived, and it’s quite simply — time to celebrate.”

Chair of the Maungaturoto 150th committee, Albie Paton, has been busy putting the vital finishing touches to next weekend’s programme saluting the Albertland settlers who founded the town.

They came ashore after a trip along the river from Kaiwaka, at the end of a long journey around the world from England, and prior to embarking there, from many other points of the compass.

“It has been a huge programme of work, all undertaken by our dedicated

community and I take my hat off to everyone,” said Albie.

The most visible work to herald the 150th was perhaps the $750,000 remake of the main thoroughfare, with the New Zealand Transport agency coming to the party as its contribution to the event. The works were scheduled, but the agency admits it considered the anniversary date in timing its arrival on site. In the Maungaturoto town area there were improvements to the kerb and to drainage and the road was resurfaced. continued on page 8 …

Footpaths were upgraded from the township west to the Caltex service station and east from Holy Trinity Church to the fire station.

Hurndall Street saw a huge landscaping and planting project, with local businesses working to create decorated shop fronts with exotic rock gardens and water features, and new pathways and steps adjacent to Dreams and the library and other businesses.

“Thanks to the beautification group the town area looks a million dollars with more to come,” said Albie.

“In effect the whole district got behind the anniversary planning with road

frontages and fences spruced up and painted. We now most certainly have a district to be very proud of.”

A major project was the restoration of the riverside landing where the Albertland pioneers stepped ashore.

The wharf area includes reclaimed land, a boat ramp and walkways to make it a future waterside picnic and fishing spot.

Registrations for the 150th will begin at 3pm on Friday, followed by a ‘meet and greet’ at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and the opening of a time capsule from the town’s 1963 centenary.

On Saturday, at 10.30am, there will be a settlers’ landing re-enactment and a powhiri at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road followed by a parade ‘through the ages’ to the Maungaturoto Country Club. Old time sports and entertainment will occupy the afternoon, followed by a celebration dinner at the centennial hall.

On Sunday there will be an interdenominational church service and the dedication of a memorial.

Throughout the weekend, there will be performances of a play written for the event, produced by the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, and history trails, with visitors guided around the district.

Maungaturoto

150 years

Proud to serve this

‘real Kiwi town!’

ORT produces ‘Scandalous’ playIt is very fitting that Otamatea Repertory Theatre should celebrate the Maungaturoto 150th by producing an historic play — ‘The Scandalous Maungaturoto Hotel Licencing Affair’.

And it is equally fitting that Peter Flower, who is the great-grandson of one of the key players in this story, Harold Flower, should write and direct this play.

The ‘Scandalous’ play is an historical and factually true story of the building of the Maungaturoto Hotel, set in 1902, and the facts behind the granting of the liquor licence, reflecting the nature of the community and the country as a whole, at that time.

That the hotel licence was imposed on the people of Maungaturoto, against the majority’s wishes, was indeed

scandalous at the time and made national headlines. Hours of research have been spent — reading through old documents and reports — to create this dramatised ‘documentary-style’ work, for our enjoyment, and to pay tribute to the tenacity of the early settlers who helped make Maungaturoto such a fine community.

Four performances only — October 31 at 7.30pm, Nov 1 at 8pm, Nov 2 at 2pm and Nov 3 at 2pm.

Tickets are $20 each and are available at First National Real Estate in Maungaturoto and online at www.ort.org.nz. Shar Dormer, Suzanne Lappin, Maura Flower, Sally Taylor

MaungaturotoMaungaturoto 150 YearsYearsHeritage building with a story to tell by Andy Bryenton

Today the historic Maungaturoto Hotel stands as the heart of this small Kaipara town, a meeting place for locals and the venue for some memorable good times.

But ‘if these walls could talk’, as the saying goes, a story of double-crosses, blunders, ingenuity and triumph would be told.

Initial plans to build a tavern for the fledgling town seemed to be thwarted when a conclave of local ministers condemned the idea. Temperance

was in full swing, and a pub was seen as a devilish temptation. The courts ruled that the licence from the defunct Hakaru pub could be transferred, but only if the brewery could win a seemingly impossible race against time, constructing the new building before the paperwork lapsed.

Undaunted, the pro-tavern group set to, building the hotel in Onehunga and

transferring it by barge up the Manukau Harbour — where it nearly sank in rough weather. The pub was put on a train and sent to Helensville, where it was again set afloat, this time on a cattle barge towed by a tug. This, too, proved a fraught endeavour, as the barge nearly capsized, and the hotel looked doomed.

With time running out some enterprising builders rushed up to the site, erected the front door of the hotel, nailed the licence to the boards and declared the premises open. This was enough for the magistrate — and to this day, the Maungaturoto Hotel remains the heart of the town, with good food and cold drink for all.

GAS Maungaturoto

A starring role for HaydenAppearing in amateur dramatics for the Otamatea Repertory Theatre as a teenager in Maungaturoto proved to be a springboard into international show business.

Hayden Tee has now landed the role of Inspector Javert in a Melbourne production of Les Miserables.

The show will open in Melbourne in June next year, and the stage will be familiar to Tee, who has also played the role of Marius in another production of the Victor Hugo musical in the West End of London.

“Hayden appeared in lots of productions at ORT and while he was at school in Auckland, and he was coached in singing by Joan Kennaway of Opera North” said his mother, Debbie Brooks, from the Brooks Motors office in Maungaturoto.

“Then when he was 18 he was admitted to the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. After that it was off to New York and appearances in lots of shows across several countries.”

These have included King Arthur and Being Earnest in the United States and Cats in  London. Talent seems to run in the family, as Hayden’s

Hayden Tee was home last week, catching up with mum, Debbie Brooks

brother and sister take voice lessons while his youngest brother, Kallan, is starting in the Otamatea Repertory Theatre and is under going training by Maura Flower.

“I guess he’s following in his older brother’s footsteps,” said Debbie.

The family is pleased that Les Mis is being staged just across the Tasman. “We have a travel service to entertainment venues around the country. We will almost certainly

be arranging a tour to Les Mis in Melbourne. Anyone interested in travelling with us can contact us at [email protected].”

A quarter century of service by Andy Bryenton

Twenty five years is quite a milestone in business, especially in troubled economic times.

It’s universally accepted, however, that the way to negotiate the bumps in the road to business success is with outstanding service and the support of loyal customers — and that’s just the formula which has seen local company

Gas and Tyre Services thrive. It’s a philosophy they adhere to to this day.

Opened in 1988 from modest premises in Dargaville, the small core team of the gas supply, fleet service and automotive tyre specialists has grown to encompass delivery drivers, fitting and balancing technicians, support staff and administrators, as well as experts in dealing with the biggest of big machines. With a 24 hour a day 7 day a week fleet of service trucks out in the forests and fields, Gas and Tyre Services are relied upon by the vital agricultural and forestry sectors to keep hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of hardware operational.

While the highly visible side of their business — the local ‘gas man’ delivering his bottles, or the staff on the forecourt ready to check and change passenger car tyres — is extremely important, it’s the work which average folks don’t see which has built a strong reputation for the Gas and Tyre Services brand. For a logging operator

a punctured tyre can put a key piece of machinery out of commission, and changing such a flat is no small task.

It’s a measure of just how seriously the skills of the Gas and Tyre Services team are taken that industrial tyre producer Nokian chose them to head up the Australasian field tests of a whole new breed of log skidder tyre.

Over the past 25 years the bywords of this hard-working local company have remained ‘service, value and quality’, three key ingredients which have seen them grow, adding new work space and expanding to fill a large site in Dargaville’s Victoria Street.

Such industry and dedication is to be congratulated, with the expectation of another 25 years and more of service to come.

Gas and Tyre Services’ modern facilities have grown along with their businessover the last 25 years

New names take on the MountainThis year’s battle of the V8s on the ‘sacred tarmac’ of Bathurst came down to the classic showdown of Ford versus Holden, despite the inclusion of new names Erebus Racing (Mercedes Benz) and Nissan.

But the up-and-comers challenging the legendary red and blue rivalry on Mount Panorama may very well hit their stride next year, with a wealth of technical data gleaned from running against the well established Ford and Holden teams.

Certainly, Mercedes will be looking to up their game — the German marque have been monstering motorsport events since the days when they took on Auto Union speedsters in the 1930s. And Nissan’s spirited attempt to recapture the glory of their ‘Godzilla’ victories with the powerful new Altima

was only cut short by a tragic kangaroo strike — not something any racer can plan for.

Next year both teams will have the benefit of many races under their belts, and another returning brand nipping up behind them. Volvo return to the hallowed ground of the Mountain after a more than 20-year hiatus. In 1986 Kiwi driver Robbie Francevic won the Aussie touring car series in a Volvo — now the Scandinavian automakers have put together something much more potent than the old 240T to re-enter the big leagues.

Ford, too have changes on the horizon, as the run of the beloved Falcon badge comes to an end. More wins like that delivered by Mark Winterbottom this year will see the Aussie icon off in style, but what will replace it on the track?

Rumours abound that a specially prepped Mustang is waiting in the wings — thought the fact that the Mustang is a two-door in its current format might mean a change of rules is needed.

Certainly, the design of the current crop of cars adheres to tight guidelines, a fact which has led to some race fans wondering exactly which of the sleek,

sticker-wrapped machines is actually carrying German or Japanese hardware under the hood.

Holden are currently keeping tight-lipped about the future of the Commodore, though if Ford’s famed ‘pony car’ is homulgulated, perhaps we’ll see a Camaro, or, if the racing gods are merciful, a Stingray on the starting grid.

One thing is for certain — variety, and a range of different brands of car competing at Bathurst will make the event more interesting for the non Ford- and-Holden-obsessed. My personal pick — bring back the mighty Charger!

Bathurst’s Ford versus Holden years are over — but what will the future bring?

Andrew has been awarded an Auckland University scholarship that will pay all his compulsory course fees for three years and provide $5,000 a year for non-course costs over the same period.

He and his family got the good news a week ago. “They’re pretty stoked.”

The scholarship will make his tertiary study easier, as he will be able to focus on his studies rather than his finances. “It’ll mean, if I’m careful, I won’t need to get a part-time job. I’ll be able to put more time into my study.”

He says the scholarship is especially helpful with housing in Auckland being so expensive. “I’ll be staying at O’Rourke Hall. That’ll come $13,500 for two semesters.”

Andrew is Head Boy at Dargaville High and represented Kaipara in the Rishworth Cup public speaking competition.

He says he wants to study at Auckland University because “It’s the highest ranked university in New Zealand and it’s got a really good engineering programme.”

The course for a Bachelor of Engineering lasts four years. He is unsure whether he will return to Dargaville once he graduates. “I’ve got no idea. I haven’t thought that far ahead. I suppose I’ll go wherever I can get a job.”

Andrew chose engineering because ‘it’s just something I do’.

Dargaville Museum has operated from Harding Park since 1985, although it was set up in the 1950s.

Museum manager Penny McKenzie is the museum’s sole employee. But there are a group of about 50 volunteers who perform a huge range of tasks, from staffing the front desk to restoring exhibits, building them and cleaning.

“We couldn’t survive without volunteers,” says Ms McKenzie.

The museum is open from 9am to 4pm in winter and 9am to 5pm in summer. Volunteers usually work a shift in the morning or one in the afternoon.

While it can help to have skills such as carpentry, building or customer service, that is not essential. “Volunteers need to have an interest in the community.”

Ms McKenzie says volunteers get to meet people from many countries and regions. And while there is a loyal cadre of volunteers, Ms McKenzie says there is always room for more.

“People get busy or sick. And we always need people, especially at weekends.

If you can help — whether it is in the archives, in the workshop or at the front desk — Ms McKenzie would love to hear from you. You can call her on 09 439 7255 or e-mail [email protected].

One of Dargaville’s leading visitor attractions is putting out a call for people to lend a hand.

Dargaville High student Andrew McLaren’s plans to study engineering next year just got a whole lot easier.

He is now preparing for his final school exams. Then he’s got a job until Christmas — planting kumara.

Salon Co-ordinator / Beauty TherapistDue to growth Esthetica Skin Revision Clinic requires a part-time front desk/salon co-ordinator for immediate start.

The front desk co-ordinator is a key role in our busy clinic environment. It is a dynamic position and requires the ability to multi-task. As you are the first point of contact for our clients, you must be friendly, approachable, confident, efficient, immaculately presented and an excellent communicator.

The salon co-ordinator is responsible for ensuring a seamless client experience and support for team members.

We also require a fully qualified part-time beauty therapist with a view to becoming full time in the near future. Both positions could be combined for immediate full-time employment for the right candidate.

If this sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you. Post your CV to Trisha House, 8 Portland Street, Dargaville or email to [email protected] with reference to which position you are applying for.
