New Zealand Defence Force Medals will be formally presented at the Northern Wairoa RSA in Hokianga Road on Friday, October 12 at 6pm.

New Zealander’s who served in the military for three or more years since the end of World War Two and those who completed their compulsory military training or national military service obligations qualify for the medal.

“Those persons who have applied for and received their medal and wish to have their medal offi cially presented are asked to report to the RSA with their medal by 17.45 hours,” says president, John McLean.

“Lieutenant Colonel Chris Powell, Commanding Offi cer of 3 Auckland/Northland Regiment, will be in attendance

to present the medals. Family and friends are also cordially invited to attend this special function,” adds Mr McLean.

Dargaville resident and medal recipient, Ross Newlove, was called up at age 20 for national military service training at Waiouru Military Camp and went on to serve a further 17 years in the territorial army.

“It’s great to be formally acknowledged for military service and for generations going forward it’s also important. There’s a lot of interest these days — you see teenagers at Anzac parades wearing their grandparent’s medals — it’s wonderful,” says Mr Newlove.

Taniwha Cup to international leagueDargaville bred, Sam McKendry, 23, has been selected to represent New Zealand in rugby league and will play against Australia on Saturday October 13 in Townsville

Currently he wears the number eight prop jersey for the Penrith Panthers and was selected for the Australian league side when he was 17.

“Sambo was always very determined and it was Bryce Wakely (New Zealand Rugby League development manager) who was very instrumental in getting Sam the contract,” says Sam’s mother, Raewyn Sowter.

He attended Dargaville primary and intermediate schools and played in the Taniwha Cup Roller Mills rugby team before he went to board at Mt Albert Grammar in Auckland.

Raewyn says that Sam’s biggest supporter apart from herself and

husband Kevin was his grandfather, Maiti Nathan, who “never missed a game” and a proud moment was when Sam represented the New Zealand Maori team in the curtain raiser before the 2008 World Cup.

“For us representing his whanau in the Maori team was a real celebration.”

She said that it’s good for Dargaville and hopes that it will inspire young boys to follow in Sam’s footsteps.

“It’s proof that it doesn’t matter where you come from if your dreams are big enough you can do anything you want to.”

Commissioners at council chambers, from left, John Robertson, Colin Dale, Richard Booth and Peter Winder

First meeting for commissionersA powhiri to welcome the Kaipara District Council Commissioners was held at chambers on Monday October 8 followed by the first council meeting of the four commissioners, John Robertson (chair), Richard Booth, Colin Dale and Peter Winder

The meeting was opened by Mr Robertson who acknowledged, “this is the first meeting of council conducted by commissioners, an appointment that took place September 9 and we welcome the presence of the Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association and the press.”

The establishment of an Audit and Risk Committee was approved with Richard Booth as chair. It was resolved to reconsider the appointment of an external member to the committee.

Council has been required to review its representation on committees as the elected members are now councillors in name only.

Appointments have been reviewed with commissioners appointed as council representatives to both internal and external committees.

It was also resolved to establish a Chief Executive’s Performance Review Committee as a matter of good practice and will be a committee of the full council, chaired by John Robertson.

Council approved consent for the Dargaville Club Incorporated to install two replacement gaming machines at its

premises on Victoria Street, Dargaville. The Department of Internal Affairs’

condition that forced the surrender of two gaming machines was subsequently successfully challenged therefore council believes it to be appropriate to permit the reinstatement of two gaming machines.

It was noted that this unique situation has been allowed for in Council’s Class 4 Gambling Venue Policy and that this decision should not be seen as council in any way revoking or revisiting its “sinking lid” policy which still remains in force.

The powhiri included greetings from Kaipara kaumatua Rex Nathan, Hugh Nathan and Ben de Thierry and speeches from commissioners John Robertson and Colin Dale.

Hugh Nathan welcomed the commissioners and recognised they ‘have a big job ahead’.

Mr Robertson acknowledged that council and the CEO have been through a tough period and underlined the need to look to the future.

The ceremony was concluded with a blessing, hongi and light lunch.

A new lease of lifeA copper hot water heater from early last century is in the process of being restored to its former glory at the Dargaville Museum

When it was donated to the museum ‘a long time ago’ it was coated in the black of time and countless fi res.

“The blackening inside is from the coal fi res that heated the water, and it used to be black on the outside as a result of a lifetime of neglect,“ says museum volunteer, Ray Willmott, who traded in his hectic career as an accountant in Northhampton, UK for a slower paced lifestyle in the peace and quiet of Dargaville.

Having spent holidays with his partner’s family in Ruawai, it was ‘the country, the people and the climate’ that pulled Ray to the area a year ago and he chuckles, “I had to escape those cold English winters.

“With a population of around 5,000

Dargaville is in complete contrast with Northhampton which has close to a quarter of a million people.”

With an abiding interest in history, these days he is helping restore museum artefacts as well as general maintenance and for the past couple of weeks he has been polishing the old copper boiler which will be displayed in the pioneer section.

“It was made by Speedway Products Limited Manufacturers, New Zealand and given to the museum by an unknown donor,” says Dargaville Museum manager, Pene McKenzie.

“I quickly found Dargaville to be a friendly place and I can’t walk down the main street without seeing people I know — this is now home for me.”

Tongar and Tomoko Pardede said it was an adorable location for their wedding and family from Japan made the trip for an iconic New Zealand experience.

“We had to wear gumboots to get across the paddock to the church then change into our nice shoes,” chuckles Tomoko.

She chose the church because it is unique complete with ancient kauri and stained glass windows.

“The place was perfect — it’s a very cute building and beautiful green fi elds with sheep in them.”

Since it was fi rst blessed by members of the clergy in 2010 the church has seen three weddings and now owner, Warren Suckling would like to offer it as a place to renew vows.

“It’s a way for couples to reaffi rm their commitment as well as share it with their children and grandchildren who often aren’t there the fi rst time round,” says Warren.

He is working out a package deal with

Dancing in the family From re to glory

Kathryn de Bruin, who also danced until the age of 13, has passed on her love of dancing to her three daughters and says, “it’s a huge part of our family life.”

Lesley Chitty (nee Fleming), Kathryn’s mother, performed all over the North Island and won many competitions along with her sister, Margaret Fleming who won her fi rst NZ championship at the age of 12.

Lesley opened her own highland dance studio in Dargaville at 16. Enrolled at teachers training college in Auckland, she travelled home every weekend to teach. She taught many successful performers in the district and went on to become a judge.

The girls agree that meeting people is one of the best parts and each year the de Bruin family travel to Australia to compete in the International Championships in Gosford along with the Australasian Champions of Champions held biannually, in which Sarah was placed second in her age group earlier this year.

Kathryn makes all the costumes which means the girls are able to hand pick the fabrics and colours rather than wearing standard kilts.

“Aside from knitting the socks, I make everything from the word go — I hand-sew the kilts and order the fabric off the internet from Canada and Scotland. The costumes are comfortable too as they’re all custom fi tted.”

Saved from the fire, the winning macrocarpa bowl of Gilmore Brown Kaipara Arts people’s choice awardThe wood had been

sitting in David’s shed for three years before he decided to craft it and he says it almost ended up in the fi re.

“When I took it out of the shed, my neighbour thought I was cutting it up for fi rewood — that’s how ugly the piece of wood was.”

He says that it took weeks to fi nish with a lengthy process.

“Before I cut any wood it was necessary to visualize the fi nished size and shape of the bowl. Then cut it out, hand shape it, remove all the rot away to clean timber, paint it, sand it and fi nally oil it.”

While he has been painting and drawing for around 20 years he is relatively new to wood carving with his fi rst serious attempt being the Kauri Maiden in 2010. Made from roots, it resembles fl owing hair and a face and is now displayed in The Kauri Museum.

“I’ve dabbled in wood carving but it’s all new and I’m learning new processes — with the bowl, I wanted to do something different that wasn’t round and It is hand shaped.”

The Kauri Museum exhibited entries across the four categories -painting and drawing, adornment, three dimensional and photography and printing and over 500 people

voted for their favourite art work.“It was quite unexpected actually. I

went to the museum on other business and then they surprised me with the news. I’m really chuffed — all my hard work wasn’t in vain.”

Museum CEO, Betty Nelly said the exhibition was a success with hundreds of people through and David’s bowl is now for sale in the museum shop.

“Performing in front of a large audience gives you confi dence and makes you feel great, especially when you come off stage after dancing well,” says Sarah.

Sarah has recently returned from Canada where she performed in the Canadian Inter Provincial Championships. She received a highly commended in the championship and placings in her national dances.

She aims to travel to Scotland to perform next year and has expressed an interest in becoming a teacher, following in her grandmother’s footsteps.

The bus will run on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday and the Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre will be a pick up or drop off point for travellers keen to stay on the west coast longer.

“We’re really rapt that it’s happening — before we had no way for backpackers to get to the forest and now they can,” says owner, Sue Taylor.

Operations supervisor for the Magic

Bus, Nigel Spence said the service will be running in the summer with an 11 seat van but if it proves popular they will upgrade to a larger vehicle and rethink its availability.

“If it proves popular, you never know, we might keep the itinerary all year round.”

Magic Bus sales representative, Marlee Meleisea, said that the west coast was their “main point of difference” with the kauri forests and activities like sand boarding on the west coast beaches, adding that she enjoys the ride as much as the travellers.

“It’s nice travelling back through these parts. We ran a service in March that went in the opposite direction, but it’s nice to do it in the morning when you’re fresh. The travellers return to Auckland along State Highway 1 from Paihia after being ‘blown away’ by the beauty of the west coast.”

Visitors from around the world join Kiwis excited to see the mighty Tane Mahuta kauri tree and the Waipoua Forest

On The Pulse is the name of the friendly, family oriented new fi tness centre on the main street of the harbourside town, and it’s a local family who have stepped up to run it -— all the way down to their granddaughter baby Natharlia (who at four months old may be the youngest gym shareholder in New Zealand), the management and staff of On The Pulse are dedicated to providing a fun, relaxed environment in which to train, exercise or just lose those extra kilos.

It all began through a conversation with previous gym owner Melissa Wilson at a local rugby match. From there it’s been a lot of hard work outfi tting and renovating the premises into the top-class facility which welcomes customers today, but family and friends all pitched in to get the job done.

Now gym operator and Zumba instructor Milly and her sister Mariece are proud to introduce new members to a fi tness centre which would not look out of place in the big city — complete with free weights, machines, cycles,

a boxing training area and a stage for Zumba, cardio and pulse classes. It’s affordable too, with yearly memberships starting at only $270, and family rates are available.

It’s a convenient way to get in shape for summer, hone muscles for sports, or

boost your strength and confi dence. On The Pulse is staffed from 9.30 in the morning until 9.30 in the evening, letting busy farm workers, 9 to 5ers and parents put in some workout time

to fi t their busy schedules. Extended hours will be coming soon with new security technology.

Adding to the new centre’s skills and applications is respected local physiotherapist Lyndsey Bargh, whose staff will be on site regularly to help those recovering from injuries get fi t and active again. Having the facilities of an entire state of the art gym in Ruawai to support the good work which physio does — especially for older patients — is perfect for Lyndsey, who looks forward to helping even more Kaipara locals with this new partnership.

With summer on the way getting active, fi t and healthy for sports and outdoors pursuits is a hot topic right now. And it’s just become easier to get in shape if you live in the Kaipara, with a brand new gym opening in the town of Ruawai

It’s affordable too, with yearly memberships starting at only $270, and family rates available

A team of local businesses are working together on an extension of Norfolk Court’s special needs Alzheimer’s unit known as Norfolk Haven in Normanby Street, Dargaville

The project is expected to be completed before Christmas and includes four new bedrooms with ensuites as well as an expansion of the lounge and dining room area and an extension to the main kitchen.

The team includes Northern Wairoa Building Contractors along with Laser Electrical, Cuthbert Plumbers, Barry Curach Plasterer, I/E Decorating Services as well as Kaipara Flooring and Dargaville Aluminium.

“It’s great to be able to support the business community and the town and there’s a level of trust as we have dealt with many of them for over 30 years,“ says CEO, Stuart House.

The Norfolk Court Rest Home was the original homestead of the town’s founder Mr Dargaville who built the villa in 1874.

“We wanted the cladding on the new extension to match the profi le of the kauri weatherboards to keep the original look.”

“It’s a homely environment, we like to have a joke and there’s always events happening whether it’s a trip to the beach or a school group coming to sing or a bowls competition with Kauri Coast Rest Home — it’s really rewarding to see the residents enjoying themselves.”

Statistics show that demand is rising for dementia and hospital care for the elderly and the Haven is the only special needs facility in the Kaipara.

“We need to expand because of the demand for rooms in the region — the closest facilities are in Kerikeri and Whangarei. By providing a local facility, the residents have their family close by and it’s better for everyone.”

An aging population; a growing concernWith medical science pushing our

expected life spans ever further beyond the accepted ‘threescore and ten’, the issue of dementia among older New Zealanders is one which is becoming more important by the year. And while medical researchers are diligently working on ways to cure the various types of dementia which can affect our oldest citizens, in the short term at least the imperative is to provide the very best care for those living with the condition.

With an aging population and projected lifespans for today’s kids topping 100 years, it’s defi nitely a growing concern.

Initiatives such as the expansion of Norfolk Haven are a positive step toward providing this level of care, but the issue still exists of people living with undiagnosed dementia in the community. Family members will often help these people as best they can, but it can be a demanding task and is better suited to trained (and even medical) professionals.

The key factor to remember is that the quality of life of a person living with dementia is of the utmost importance,

and asking for help is the right thing to do. If an older person you know has signs of dementia, consult a medical professional fi rst, and don’t be afraid to discuss the issue.

Another Cinderella StoryTravel around England today and you can still

www.echopublishing.co.nz

The history of Kaipara is a recent one in comparison, but it is a story that has had many interesting chapters.

Covered in natural wealth of kauri, kahikatea and rimu forest, businessmen soon took advantage of it and went to work. One man who made the most of his chances in the Northern Wairoa district was Irishman Joseph Dargaville.

When he died his obituary read, ‘Joseph Dargaville was a shrewd businessman and a commanding gure with a dominant personality. It was due to his enterprise and business ability that a thriving kauri timber and gum industry, centred on Dargaville, was established. This industry made a signi cant contribution for many years to the struggling economy of New Zealand.’

When the timber, kauri gum and ax was gone, Northern Wairoa was left to wear the label

of ‘Cinderella’ of the colony. The enormous waterway had meant there was little need for roads, gumlands were left torn up and barren with a large part of the district cut off by river and harbour.

But the ugly sisters have gone. Since those days the land has been converted to fertile pasture for dairy and kumara growing, the river is well bridged and roads sealed. Cinderella has left her cinders behind.

Demonstrations from 10am to 4pm

The northern Kaipara was parcelled into 70,000 hectares of grant land, attracting some 3,000 settlers from Britain, back in 1862 and the following decade.

The anniversary is being marked from October 18 to 21, by a series of events, including the stage production of Allen Adair, a play based on the novel, by the late Jane Mander, about early Paparoa.

The play will feature four performances at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre in Maungaturoto and it has been scripted by local identity George Skelton, who is also the 150th event treasurer.

“Everything is lling up rapidly,” he said. “The bus tours of local historic sights and attractions are full, so we may have to lay on extra services. There are still seats for the play performances, and most accommodation is full. But we have a number of private homes offering accommodation for those in need.”

Formal registrations for the 150th anniversary activities will take place on Friday, October 19 and open at 9.00am on Saturday with a powhiri featuring 70 children and a re-enactment of the early settlers arriving by boat at Pahi.

This will be followed by by a grand parade in Paparoa, with a road closure on SH12 through the village, and diversions in place for traf c.

“This will be a major event with Battensby’s Bullock team, brass and pipe bands, early period dress, vintage cars and machinery, hunt horses and more,” Mr Skelton said.

by a Bush Dance at the Paparoa Hall, with participants asked to wear dress of the settlers era.

A thanksgiving service will be held at the Paparoa Community Church at 10.30am on Sunday, with lunch in the church hall afterwards, before a variety of afternoon activities.

Weather permitting the sea scouts will be sailing/rowing their cutters upto Paparoa on the tide in the early afternoon and the nal performance of Allen Adair will be on at 2pm.

In the evening the weekend high point is expected to be the celebration banquet of locally produced food.

Lugtigheid ContractingThe Regional Policy Statement when introduced

in 2013, will cause Northland district councils to review their District Plans to provide the rules to enforce the NRC’s new Regional Policy Statement. This could cause further signifi cant cost to councils. Also to complicate this process the National government is currently reviewing the Local Government Act and the Resource Management Act and one could argue that it could be presumptuous on the part of the Regional Council to introduce their new Regional policies before these legislative changes.

The Northland Regional Council is the 51% shareholder of North Port, has assets of approximately $200 million, no debt and employs 150 staff. That is 50 staff members for each of the three Northland district council areas. It receives an annual dividend of some $millions from North Port and is also funded by Northland ratepayers and this is spent on monitoring its environmental responsibilities.

North Port’s income comes from the export of logs at Whangarei. Approximately 2 million tons of logs are produced in Northland each year, 46% produced in the Far North, Kaipara has 21%,

Whangarei 17%, Rodney 16%. Forestry represents $260 million of Northland’s GDP per annum. The estimated forecasts are that Northland has the capacity to produce 4 million tons of logs per year, the majority of which will go through North Port at Whangarei.

I believe there is a solid argument now for Northland’s three district councils to seek a direct fi nancial share from North Port’s activities to help fund Northland’s roading problem. While the rest of New Zealand is concerned with traffi c congestion on roads, Northland’s problem is keeping roads open.

Northland is sinking in debtReports in the media recently regarding the

issue of farm debt, local government debt and government debt gives a wake up call warning to us all. Last week one of Northland’s regional bank managers informed me that there were a number of farmer clients who they had tried to support over the last fi ve or six years but were now faced with no option but to inform these farmer clients, they had no choice but to face the sale of their farming properties. Farmers of New Zealand believes that among all the banks, there are approximately 40 Northland farms that are under threat of forced sales. These affected farmers should not delay in seeking professional advice.

The Kaipara district council is swimming in debt.It is ironical that while the Kaipara district

council is drowning in debt, its council replaced by commissioners appointed by the Minister of Local Government, and Mangawhai ratepayers advertising in the local press asking all Kaipara ratepayers to wake up and not pay their rates, Mangawhai ratepayers on the front page of the paper want to develop its Mangawhai park into a 37 ha complex of walking tracks, cycleways, playground, recreation area and museum.

This demonstrates that many of us do not live in the real world.

Field day for local farmers

A young farmer checks out Kubotas new UTV

Redline manager John shows customers the roomy cab of the new Kubota

Kaipara farmers greeted Kubota’s new models with enthusiasm, with some even bringing the kids for a complementary bbq and a chance to climb aboard both the new range of tractors and Kubota’s UTV vehicles. One of these is going to be given away to a lucky Kubota customer soon as part of the roadshow, which sets off for the Waikato soon, travelling on throughout the country.

Kubota have been popular for many years in New Zealand for their range of small to mid sized tractors, and the new range displayed at their fi eld day is a step in a new direction for the local market, heralding even larger machines to come. Careful attention to what farmers want from their machines, along with the stringent guidelines imposed by emissions regulations mean that the Grand X and its ‘siblings’ in the Kubota lineup deliver versatility with effi ciency… a combination which has seen them outsell big names in the industry in the U.S. market.

Local Dargaville Kubota dealers Redline Farm Machinery are pleased with the success of the fi eld day, and wish to thank all those who attended, and those who worked behind the scenes to make it possible. Manager John Moolenschot invites anyone who missed out on the big day to pay him a visit and get the lowdown on these exciting new machines before New Zealand’s consignment ships from Kubota in Japan.

It was a great day out for Kaipara farmers on the 2nd of October as Kubota’s roadshow hit town. For one day the fi eld days site just outside of Dargaville was the venue to view and experience the latest in agricultural technology from the innovative Japanese company — a leap forward in function and affordability

The fl ying trapeze

Letter to the Editor

Dargaville Primary school student, Korie Morrison aged 10 puts his balance and co-ordination skills to the test at a school holiday programme run by Circus Kumarani. For many of the children attending it was their fi rst time on a trapeze and circus Kumarani manager, Jenny Huriwai said it helps build up confi dence. New intern, Lisa Fugmann attended the trapeze along with performer, Mat Manamat.

Dear Sir,I imagine a general feeling of rage

now exists throughout the Kaipara District with the receipt of the latest rates demand. Property values have been gutted and rates are simply ridiculous. We are paying $900 per day per commissioner to control us when in fact we ratepayers/citizens are innocent bystanders, not

responsible for the district’s current position. As there is a Minister for Local Government who dictates what a council can and can’t do, shouldn’t the buck stop at his offi ce? The Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association needs membership muscle to fi ght this scourge. Contact can be made at [email protected].

Yours, Bob Clark

Opportunity knocksPosters around Dargaville have proclaimed, “vote for Brooke Menzies” as she is in the running to be the wild card entry for New Zealand’s Got Talent

At the time of writing she is placed 38 with 1003 votes and needs a to get into the top fi ve to perform in front of the judges and if she ranks number one she moves straight to the semi-fi nals.

The 18 year old country singer is no stranger to talent shows and performed in the play Material Girls, a spoof of American Idol, at the Dargaville Little Theatre.

It was about an 80s girl band, Material Girls, who were stuck in the 70s and enter the competition, Opportunity Knocks, to shake up their image and achieve their dreams, with the original script written by Deborah Steel.

“Brooke was one of the fi ve fi nalists in the competition and we used to joke around that it was rigged.”

She says that if it was real, Brooke would have won, but the plot called for Material Girls to win. Life has now imitated art, and Deborah says she is a natural performer with great talent.

Brooke will know on Wednesday, October 10 when voting closes whether she has made it and to vote for her visit: http://abovetherest.tvnz.co.nz/myentry/brooke-menzies.
