A close shave for cancer fund

Shave for a Cure is Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s biggest fundraising event, and helps the six Kiwis who are diagnosed with a blood cancer or related condition every day.

New Zealanders from all walks of life have lost their locks for the cause, involving schools, businesses, community groups, families, sports teams, social organisations, universities and many more.

Thus, there was a ‘shave in’ at Baylys Beach restaurant, Funky Fish last weekend.

A complaint against the Kaipara District Council of obtaining monies by deceit is being lodged with the police.

The complaint arises from illegal rates the council has admitted levelling in Mangawai for the EcoCare wastewater scheme.

School milk and recyclingRuawai Primary School is one of over 100 Northland schools in the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme and it’s been well received by pupils

“The milk is supplied in tetra packs, which when emptied have to be folded up, origami style and placed in a special bin, supplied by Fonterra ready for recycling,” said principal, Rob Posthumus.

“As you can probably imagine it’s fun and games for the children having to fold the containers in a speci c way and it’s taking much more time out of the day than we anticipated. We have

been supplied with a fridge to keep the milk cold, which is good because I still have memories of having to drink warm milk at school.

“Some children have decided that drinking milk each day is not for them and we are not forcing them to drink it.”

Fonterra will monitor the pilot for the rst three terms, with the intention of rolling it out nationwide in 2013,” says Fonterra CEO, Theo Spierings.

“Milk is without a doubt, one of the most nutritious foods there is and as leaders in dairy nutrition, we want to do what we can to make it more accessible to New Zealanders.”

“The basis of this complaint is quite simple. Council acknowledged on February 10, 2012, that the EcoCare rates were illegal. It knew that it had no legal right to collect any rates that were illegal. However it had sent out a rate demand (fourth installment) that included those illegal rates at an earlier date.

Once it discovered that the rates were illegal Council should have sent a message to ratepayers advising that the illegal rates were not to be paid. It failed to do that and proceeded to collect and keep the illegal rates.”

The KDC says it believes the initiation of legal proceedings at this time would be counter-productive and not in the interests of either council or the community.

It adds in a statement: ‘All that it would do is create signi cant additional costs for both council (whose costs would ultimately need to be funded via rates) and the individual ratepayers involved.

In addition to the costs of the proceedings themselves there would be a need, if the court did order a refund of the rates collected to date, for that ‘lost revenue’ to be nanced in an interim

Police complaint against KDCperiod until the resulting loan could be repaid via a new rating mechanism in the future.

It is our desire to work with the community in an open and transparent manner.

We are working through the options for addressing the invalid rates issues and we anticipate being in a position to release the draft 2012 Long Term Plan (LTP) in the near future.

The LTP outlines a number of options for funding both the capital and operating costs associated with the MCWWS (EcoCare system).

The options put forward are signi cantly different to the approach that council has used in the past and will create a high level of community interest and feedback.

From the LTP process we willhopefully get to the point in which there is a level of agreement on thelong term funding options for the MCWWS.

In saying that, it is also accepted that these options may need to be revised in the future to re ect the outcomes of the Auditor-General Inquiry and the implementation of any recommendations arising from it.’

Two men in their 70s died when their newly-purchased Zenair Zodiac came down in a paddock following a Mayday emergency call.

They were returning to Dargaville after visiting the Royal New Zealand AirForce 75th Anniversary Air Show at Ohakea.

“In fact, both men stayed with me before they ew south,” said Dargaville instructor, Murray Foster.

“One of the men is a quali ed pilot and a former ship’s captain — including time as skipper of the Spirit of New Zealand, while the other was being taught by me, and was just about to qualify.

They bought their new plane aboutsix weeks ago and we had hangar facilities for them so they kept it at Dargaville.

“It’s a real tragedy all around. Both men had grown families and in fact,

they had each just built new homes.”Mr Foster said he expected a

The names of the men involved had not been released for publication at the time of printing.

The crackle and roar of rally cars has faded from rural Kaipara roads with victory in the Brother International Rally of Whangarei going to Australian, Chris Atkinson, with a 28.1 second winning margin over fellow Asia Paci c Rally Championship contender, Per-Gunnar Andersson.

Atkinson drove a Skoda Fabia S2000 in his and the car’s rst event with Team MRF from India. Last year Atkinson won the event in a Proton Satria Neo S2000 car — the car now driven by Andersson.

Third overall and third APRC nisher was Atkinson’s team-mate, Indian Gaurav

over roads around Whangarei and through Northland and Kaipara, and attracted nearly 50 drivers from India, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Sweden, United Kingdom, and New Caledonia as well as from all over New Zealand.

4 APRIL 4 - 2012 KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days

— truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

No, it is not a story from a Middle East desert but a 1901 newspaper report describing conditions at Pouto Lighthouse on Kaipara Heads.

‘Kaipara North Head is a moving sandhill with a few hard clay patches. The lighthouse and the houses are built on one of them,’ noted the newspaperman in his story.

‘The houses are built on piles off the ground so that the wind gets full scope under them to keep the sand

clear. Otherwise the sand would bank up against them in windy weather. It is very unpleasant when blowing hard as great sandbanks build up in unexpected places. The air is full of driving sand which nds its way in through doors and windows, much to the disgust of tidy housewives’.

Kaipara was never an easy harbour for a ship’s captain to safely enter. Early instructions for mariners told them to sight a triangular tuft on the South Head

When there’s too much beach by Brian Eastwood

Imagine this. ‘Sometimes during the sand storms some unfortunate fowl gets blown out from the shelter of the house and as they crouch down the sand covers them and if they are not rescued, it buries them’

and a green patch on North Head. One disgruntled captain protested in 1874 that the green patch was usually covered with sand so that it was often not visible. The rst signalling station was on South Head and was said to be unworkable from there. Up to 1881 more than twenty ships had already come to grief on the sandbars.

That unhappy captain also complained, ‘There is no leading beacon into the harbour, it is dif cult to get a pilot, wharf accomodation is wretched and mooring piles insecure’.

Other skippers agreed and got together to agitate for the station to be shifted. After many appeals North Head was picked as the best site.

On 1st December 1884 the new North Head lighthouse sent a beam of light 37 kilometres out to sea. Presumably to stop it being blown away, the lighthouse walls were packed with Mt Eden rocks. There were two cottages for the keepers and their families, a stable, water tanks, a boat shed and two tool sheds.

In his book ‘Pouto-105 Years’, author Logan Forrest named Martin Nelson as the rst keeper with his assistant, John Ansin. Edwin Curel became assistant and maintenance man a year later and stayed in the job until 1910. For ve of those years he also took on the job of of cial pilot.

One of the Pouto lighthouse cottages. They were built on piles to avoid sand building up against the walls.

A Government steamer called just twice a year to land oil and stores. Landing supplies on the beach was done on low tide because ood tide conditions were almost always bad. Provisions were got locally.

Eventually in 1903 shifting sand and erosion became too much and the families shifted in to Pouto. So if you ever thought that it was an easy and romantic life being a lighthouse keeper’s wife and family at Kaipara Heads, it seems you would be wrong. That is if those early reports about Pouto Lighthouse are to be believed.

World War Two meant the lighthouse had to be shut down. After the war in November 1947, an automatic light was tted on the same day that Kaipara was closed as a port of entry.

Kaipara Kai’s Celebrity Dinner lled the tables at the Lighthouse Function Centre last Saturday night, with entertainer Garry McCormick adding to the fun.

Earlier in the day, he held a meet and greet with local people at the Empire Wine Cellars where he signed T-shirts as local country music singer, Brooke Menzies, provided entertainment.

At the dinner, Kevin Friedrich and Lionel Richie offered a piano accordian accompaniment as guests enjoyed Kim’s Cuisine to comments such as ‘Fabulous - equal to anything a master chef could have done’.

Seafood fritters vied with scotch llet, roast lamb, spiced kumara and macadamia crusted snapper for the diners’ attention.

“Overall the whole Kaipara Kai festival went really well,” said organiser Trevor Donald. “We had lots of positive feedback and demands for it to happen again.

But we do need more people on

Dargaville claims the distinction of possessing the youngest skater in the world in the person of Dorothy Armitage, who is only two years

Mr. Woods, Public Works engineer from Whangarei, arrived by boat last evening and will be engaged for the next few days taking soundings

Mangawhai

With a eld of four top contenders leading the pack and with enough horsepower behind them to shake the autumn leaves off the trees the drivers of the 2012 Mickey Thompson Offroad Racing Championship are roaring into Mangawhai this Easter weekend, bringing mud-slinging grunt and erce driving competition to the normally laid-back coastal town.

Event organiser Nick Leahy (also one of the top four who are vying for victory) is optimistic about getting a good crowd behind the landmark event, the rst time the offroad champs have been held in Northland for more than ten years.

An area of farmland just off Molesworth Drive has been sculpted and hammered into an exciting course of jumps, tight turns and blisteringly fast straights ready for the racers, and Leahy promises plenty of action from what he calls ‘a real driver’s course’.

The time and place couldn’t be better to showcase the sport of off road racing — with

Easter weekend and the school holidays upon us the town of Mangawhai will be full of holidaymakers hoping for a last taste of summer. What they’ll get is the addition of two days of high-octane action across both a stadium-fashion short course and the more gruelling endurance race. 60 race teams are set to do battle in these two arenas across a multitude of classes, including nimble VW powered machines and the mighty V8 Thunder Trucks.

Four racers are locked in a points tie at the head of the table coming into the Mangawhai round — Nick Leahy, Klem Christiansen, Grahame Steedman and Taine Carrington (the latter being only 14 years old and a real rising star of motorsport). Nick might just have the home team advantage to edge out his three challengers, but it’s going to be an adrenaline pumping ride no matter how it works out.

Visitors to Mangawhai this weekend can be sure of one thing at least — it’s going to be an Easter break to remember!

Off road action roarsinto Mangawhai

Buses, camper vans and cars ferried visitors from around the north and from Auckland for the Mangawai Walking Weekend and Arts Trail.

“We had art displayed at 17 different venues around the town, with a major display at the new museum, where 25 artists were represented,” said Mangawhai Arts Association treasurer, Jan Grover.

“It was really successful, with so many represented in one space, and of course it introduced the museum to the wider community. There were good sales recorded too.”

Several hundred visitors were able to inspect the work of about 50 local artists altogether.

“Works on display included virtually every artistic medium ranging through sculpture, painting, photography, pottery, ceramics, hand-crafted furniture, jewellery, glass art, weaving and more.

The association holds two Art Trails each year, with the next event scheduled for Labour Weekend.

Mangawhai’s next art trail will be next Labour Weekend

2012It was a night to remember at the annual First National

Real Estate awards for the team at our local Dargaville and Maungaturoto branches, as they lled the trophy cabinet with accolades.

Held each year by the Australasian-wide group of real estate professionals, the awards honour achievement in all areas of the trade, singling out those agents who have gone the extra mile for their clients and those who have excelled in different facets.

Jill Wilson from Roper and Jones (our local First National branch in Dargaville) is overjoyed with the range and number of awards her tight-knit team have won, with recognition in a wide range of categories and in the face of stiff competition from Auckland salespeople enjoying a resurgent property market. “It’s recognition for all their hard work,” she says — hard work which has seen Roper and Jones declared Rural Of ce of the Year as well as gaining the third spot overall for sales.

Other accolades for individual salespeople include a pair for Rhoda Morrison, who attained both top rural salesperson and a Sapphire award (equivalent to a silver medal in sports). Jill Wilson and Michele Tomlinson both took home Ruby awards (equivalent to the bronze), while Rachael de Vries earned not only the coveted Diamond award, but also the ercely contested position of top exclusive lister and eighth place across the northern region overall.

For her ve years with First National Rachael was also given a long service award, while Gary Morris from the Maugaturoto branch was commended for his fteen years of service.

Roper and Jones have also picked up the top award for their public relations and advertising — an aspect of their business that we here at the Kaipara Lifestyler are proud to assist with every week. The award is speci cally for ‘best consistent coverage’ — and there’s no denying that the bold blue and white colours of First National are always seen around the Kaipara.

For one agency to win so many awards is a testament to the dedication and ability of the people who work there, and the folks at Roper and Jones have every reason to celebrate their win. For those looking to buy or sell property in the Kaipara, it’s just a few more good reasons to pay this winning team a visit.

With duck season just around the corner the keen hunters and shooters of the Kaipara are gearing up for some serious fun.

That’s because before the rst duck calls are heard across the ponds and wetlands of the north there’s another big pre-season event which draws in hunters from far and near — the annual Northern Wairoa Gun Club Duck Hunters’ Shoot in association with Nola Sports.

In what’s become a yearly tradition folks will get together with their fellow shooters to meet, greet and compete in a day which is both fun and practical. As well as enjoying a clay target shoot in the crisp autumn air it’s a chance to unbend rusty trigger ngers and make ne adjustments to equipment which will soon be pressed into service bagging dinner on the wing.

To make the day even more fun there’s a swag of prizes up for offer — not only a pool of $3000 but also a pair of Escort pump action shotguns. With prizes like these up for grabs expect to see some sharp shooting action! Last year over 100 hunters and marksmen had a great time at the event, and this year is shaping up to be another one for the record books.

Come along to the N.W. Gun Club on April 15 — the fun starts at 9am sharp (which is almost mid-day for keen hunters!) and will continue through the day.

Duck shooting is actually of great environmental bene t, culling numbers

so that native species of bird get a fair go. Fish and Game also put back much of the money from duck shooting licences into the restoration of wetlands which were reclaimed in earlier years for pasture, meaning that each year duck season provides not only a hot meal or two and some fun with hunting companions, but also does a little bit to improve the natural environment, protecting the resource for generations to come.

This year’s Northern Wairoa Gun Club Duck Hunters’ Shoot is held in conjunction with Nola Sports, who are also hosting a duck shooter’s night on the May 3, before the season opens, and giving away a 5-shot semi auto Escort shotgun as part of their prize draw (every $50 spent on hunting gear gets you a ticket). Visit Mike at Nola Sports to secure hunting licences and get some advice on the right gear for a top season — guns, ammo, calls, decoys and camo make all the difference when it comes to a great day’s hunting.

“ If I can do it at 81, what’s YOUR excuse?”

Though they appear worlds apart in their applications here in New Zealand, the twin disciplines of Tai Chi Chuan and Shaolin Kempo share a spiritual and historical bond going all the way back to the Buddhist monks of the Himalayas, and a philosophy of inner peace, con dence and strength which is timeless.

Initially developed to keep the bodies of meditative monks t and healthy, Shaolin Kempo has become famous throughout the world due to the skill and artistry of the Shaolin Monks — a group who are legendary for their skill and iron willpower.

Tai Chi, on the other hand, is usually associated with peace and relaxation —

a technique which came out of China roughly 350 years ago to the attention of the west, but which ourished in the 60s and 70s as a de-stressing, meditative art.

In fact, as local martial arts trainer and advocate Nick Christiansen will tell you, both forms share a common purpose — to harness the ow of energy naturally occurring in the body, to foster discipline and calm, and to focus the mind. Tai Chi motions performed with powerful, swift intent are nearly indistinguishable from similar Kempo forms to the untrained eye, and each art complements the other.

Nick explains that Kempo is an exercise for the body and the mind, and that while it also forms the cornerstone for an effective form of self defence, the martial art (practised for nearly 1500 years) actually teaches students

to walk away from trouble and to avoid violence. More importantly, the values of discipline, inner strength and determination fostered by following the Shaolin Kempo path can help in all aspects of life — from work to school to sport and beyond.

Our local Dargaville school of Kempo was established by the renowned martial arts proponent Robert Gemmell, who, among other achievements, developed effective defence techniques for the police force and who himself studied at the Shaolin Temple in China. Just over 40 students study Tai Chi and Kempo in Dargaville, aged from ve through

to 80, all in a supervised and safe environment.

There’s a level of Tai Chi or Kempo for all genders, sizes, shapes and ages, and it’s great fun as well as a great way to hone the body and mind to a new level of tness and con dence. Visit Nick at the school on River Road to talk about getting yourself — or your kids — involved in this ancient yet very modern discipline.

Food for thought from Sunshine Organics

Coming into winter your immune system needs bolstering up to deal with the assault of cold, damp and illness. Give your body the boost it needs to activate its natural defences — give it garlic!

This tasty bulb is not only a great culinary ingredient, it’s also the world’s most powerful natural antibiotic. Garlic also helps purify the blood, it’s a great bene t to the immune system, and you’ll nd that many other veges in the garlic family are great winter health helpers too. Try onions and leeks in a tasty soup or folded into a hearty stir fry — they have a milder taste than garlic but share many of its good properties.

For the best results (in both avour and for your body) always choose ‘live’ garlic — organic, spray free and kiwi grown are best. In fact, you can grow your own garlic easily to make sure there’s always a ready supply — come and ask us how!

At Sunshine Organics in Maungaturoto you’ll nd a cornucopia of great winter produce, as well as the Good Health Winter Wellness range — designed speci cally to boost the immune system. You’ll also nd friendly advice and everything you need for a healthy and positive winter — stop by when you’re in town for a juice, a snack and a chat.

Keeping you in the game this winterPhysiotherapist Lyndsey Bargh is passionate about winter

sports — especially when it comes to other people enjoying a great season without aches, pains and sprains getting them down. As the physio who the Northern Wairoa netball team turn to to keep them in top form, Lyndsey knows that timely treatment can make all the difference between a season on the court or on the bench.

She’s joined in her practice and in her dedication to the winter codes by physiotherapists Scott and Cameron, who are team physios for the Bulls and Sharks rugby teams — an arena of big hits and hard fought victories where top performance is a must.

Between the three of them, Lyndsey’s team can deal with most sporting injuries. And the good news is that for minor injuries of this type you don’t even need a doctor’s referral to go direct to physio care.

For anyone — on or off the eld — who’s feeling aches and pains from the cold, damp weather, there’s a simple message from this dedicated team of healthcare professionals. Get treatment sooner rather than later and you’ll be able to get back in the game, no matter what your code.

Winter questions answered by Health OptionsThis winter the team at Health Options have the answers

to all your health and wellbeing questions. Here are just a few which are topical to the season:

Is the thought of winter approaching getting you down? Do you normally suffer through countless colds and coughs during this season? Here at Health Options we have a wide range of essential minerals and vitamins to get you through. Have you ever tried homeopathic treatment? It’s a great and safe

alternative to pharmacy medicine without any side effects. It’s also usually cheaper and you only use it when you need it. It’s worthwhile having a homeopathic ‘ rst aid’ kit at home. Things like Histamine for allergies, u-guard (a great alternative to getting a u shot), ‘Crampmed’ and ‘Coughmed’ just to name a few.

Midwives offer free West Kaipara serviceLaurie Cairns-Cowan and Deb Mason are independent

midwives providing a valuable service to expectant mothers in the West Kaipara — in fact, their profession is one which has been respected for centuries as vital to the health of both mothers and babies.

With no specialist birthing unit in Dargaville’s local hospital, it’s even more important for local mums to call a midwife as soon as they know a baby is on the way. That’s because the wealth of knowledge and experience inherent to the profession is valuable all the way through from conception to birth to post-natal care — it can make all the difference to your child’s start in life.

Best of all, for many expectant mothers the skills of a quali ed independent midwife come free of charge, subsidised by the government. If you’re planning to start or expand your family get some friendly advice from Deb and Laurie — they’ll be with you every step of the way!

Healthy advice on exercise from Active LivingPhysiotherapist Helen Sheat from Active Living Physiotherapy

knows that regular exercise and activity should be an integral part of looking after ourselves. When we exercise regularly the bene ts are scienti cally proven — we gain heart health, muscle strength and balance, and exercise releases endorphins which make us feel great.

But it is worth understanding that as we exercise and build strength we also shorten muscles. In fact our everyday jobs, chores and postures can also do this. Knowing some basic stretches speci c to your activity is valuable in preventing injury and those annoying pains that persist.

Research is now showing that it is the dynamic of the shortened muscles around our joints that is in uencing the degree of wear and tear present!

Prevention is everything, whether it be calf stretches in

Winter Healththe shower following your run or neck stretches after using the computer. Physiotherapists are specialists in knowing the length every muscle should be, so they are a great place to start.

We need to nd economic ways to put them to better use. Possibilities include processing the tyres for road surfacing products, converting them into oor tiles, useable fuels and recycling the steel.”

The working group will look at schemes in other countries and develop options and guiding principles for New Zealand.

The government expects to receive the report detailing options by April next year.

The Motor Trade Association is a lead member of the investigating group and manager, Dougal Morrison, says it is good to see common sense prevail.

“There are only so many silage stacks in New Zealand. Most tyres, even if collected by reputable collectors end up in land lls around the country.”

MTA would like to see around 4 million tyres collected each year and processed into other products.

They have also been used as planters, and in a few instances, packed with earth to provide alternative eco-homes on lifestyle blocks.

However, this is a limited resource for tyre recycling, so much so that the government has come up with $133,000 in funding for the Product Stewardship Foundation to explore recycling options for used tyres.

“We have a signi cant environmental problem in New Zealand with the disposal of about 4 million tyres annually at the end of their useful life,” a government spokesman said.

“In all 85% of those tyres end up in landfi lls where they leach contaminates that pose a long term risk to the environment.

Used tyres. They dot the rural landscape, where perhaps they ll their only really useful role, in holding down covers on farm silage pits

“Kaihaia diverted us by bringing a long pointed wooden spear within an inch of our bodies then retreating with roars of laughter every time he saw us shrink from the thrust. I repaid him the rst day he came aboard the ship. I had an accordion under a large cloak and kept time with its notes with my mouth to deceive him and twenty other natives that I was uttering the musical sounds. I let them nd out the trick a day or two after.”

Edward Jerningham Wake eld recorded that happening in his book ‘Adventure in New Zealand’. It was September 24th 1839 aboard the ship Tory and was the rst mention of an accordion arriving in New Zealand.

Now Dargaville’s world-renowned piano accordionist Kevin Friedrich, together with Dargaville Museum, has set up an exhibition that takes you on a journey through some highlights of New Zealand history and the part that accordion music has played.

Photos, information boards, instruments, dressed models, original sheet music covers and memorabilia from the Wake eld incident right up to New Zealander Grayson Mase eld winning the World Accordion Championships in 2009, are on show.

Accordions and especially concertinas were easily stowed music makers in the kit for sailors, soldiers, new settlers, bushmen and gum diggers, all a long way from home. Soldiers pictured on their troopship in 1943 and two years later in Italy relaxing while they listen to accordion music tells its own tale.

Maori soon took a liking to the music they could make on these instruments that they had never seen before. The Museum display shows photos of Maori accordion bands including Hokianga in 1920 and Whangarei in 1936.

Dargaville has been the home of many successful accordionists and bands The Museum presentation records that Kevin Friedrich was the New Zealand champion in 1979 and 1980 and for eight years was president of the Confederation of Internationale de Accordionists.

Interesting trivia notes that Air New Zealand has its own band and Dame Malvina Major, Precious McKenzie and policeman, M.P and former Dargaville man Ross Meurant, all play the accordion.

And interest is still high in this district. Witness the 200 people that attended Kevin Friedrich’s concert two weeks ago at the Lighthouse.

It is perhaps not generally realised that the concertina and piano accordion have been in the back ground as part of New Zealand culture right from the ‘get-go’
