‘The best trip ever’A twelve-day tour of Vietnam has paved the way for future overseas travel for Ruawai College students, with the pioneering trip described as an ‘unforgettable experience’.

Seven students accompanied by escorting parents and teachers, formed the group that travelled from Hanoi in the north to Saigon in the south, enjoying historical sites, culture, and inevitably, some exotic foods.

“I really enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone and experiencing such a different culture, alien to my own,” says student, Emma Battcher.

The students have been studying the Vietnam War, or the American War as it is referred to by the Vietnamese, and visited significant sites.

“For all the trip participants our visit to the site of the My Lai Massacre was a sobering and emotional experience and one we will never forget,” said the school's social science department head, Catherine Davis.

The students assessment topics include New Zealand’s involvement in the Vietnam War, Operation Ranch Hand, or the use of the defoliant Agent Orange and its subsequent effect on war veterans and the My Lai Massacre, and they will draw on their trip experiences.

“Visiting places such as the DMZ, My Lai, and the War Museum helped give me a better understanding of the country that I wouldn’t have been able to obtain without this trip,” says student, Anna Bickers.

As well as taking in the history, the students experienced the scenic sights and the Vietnamese culture and Ms Davis says that Ha Long Bay was a highlight for everyone.

“Students thoroughly enjoyed the two days spent cruising among the many limestone islands and islets, and alongside the floating fishing villages.”

Hoi An, famous for its silks and handcrafts, was another highlight with many getting silk garments tailor made.

The students reduced their travel costs by fundraising and Ruawai Lions also provided financial support and encouragement.

The king and queen of the ball

Dr Seuss alive and well

Photo: Langwoods Event Photography

Logan Pirini gained the title of the Dargaville High School ball queen along with Sione Takulua as the king. Held at the Town Hall, the theme this year was scary monsters and nice sprites. Circus Kumarani complemented the theme nicely with a performance and the ball committee turned the venue into an enchanted forest.

There’s a great treat in store for everyone who loves the iconic Dr Seuss stories, with the Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s presentation of ‘Seussical’ at the Maungaturoto Country Club.

Makeup designer, Ngaire Dent, says the group’s makeup and costuming team has been working hard to create the show’s many fantasy characters.

Ngaire says the Seuss creatures are depicted with creative but subtle face-painting. “It is a huge task to transform the large cast for every show. We use colourful wigs and crazy glasses to define the Who characters and this makes it a bit easier.”

The story centres around Horton the Elephant and explores the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community in a story that makes you laugh and cry.

Bookings are now open at www.ort.org.nz. The show is at the Maungaturoto Country Club on Bickerstaffe Road, on August 9 at 7.30pm and again at 2pm on August 10th, 17th and 18th.

Pelicans visit Dargaville

Photo: Debbie Evans

Commuters driving over the Northern Wairoa bridge did a double take when they saw three pelicans swimming in the river on Monday. A group of around 14 pelicans immigrated from Australia in August 2012, and settled on the mudflats near Naumai. Eight pelicans were sighted in Dargaville last week giving residents a peak at the birds. “It was my first time seeing the elusive pelicans,” says resident, Debbie Evans, “I only had a minute to take the photo before a truck drove by and they flew away.”

Kaipara local board possible

RailCruising in Dargaville on track by Rose Rees-Owen by Paul Campbell

Local board governance in the Kaipara and wider Northland, despite the area having lower populations than legally required, is on the cards in forthcoming local government reforms.

The Local Government Commission is to release a report on preferred reform options in Northland. No date has been specified, but during the public submission process, the Northland Regional Council suggested seven elected local boards with legally-protected powers and budgets — supported by a single unitary authority.

It acknowledged it would require a law change in an area with Northland’s relatively low population.

While the commission report is still to come, Local Government Minister Chris Tremain has given a clear signal the law will change.

“While the minister stopped short of providing an actual number, council understands it will be low enough that local boards will be able to be one of the suite of options which could eventually legally be considered for an area with Northland’s population,” said NRC chief executive, Malcolm Nicolson.

In a speech to parliament, Mr Tremain said the the ability would be given for local boards to be established more widely as councils are reorganised or amalgamated.

RailCruising, a tourism venture utilising four seater rail cars, is on track to open over Labour Weekend.

Passengers will travel by rail cars, powered by hybrid petrol-electric engines, along a 15km stretch between Dargaville and Tangowahine, then swap to the Daisy boat and cruise along the Northern Wairoa.

Port Dargaville Cruises director, John Hansen, recently met with the inventor of the rail car, Neil Oppatt, who runs a RailCruising operation in Rotorua.

Neil travelled to Dargaville for three weeks to offer advice and support for the new venture.

“Neil’s done it all before. Instead of reinventing the wheel we’re using his intellectual property.”

John says everything is going smoothly. He has secured the permission from KiwiRail to use the track on weekends and is currently completing health and safety paperwork.

The buildings at each end of the

railway track have been sourced, but it won’t be installed until all the paperwork is complete.

Neil has also created rail bike riding, and if all goes well with the RailCruising venture, there may be an opportunity to expand.

John says it’s a unique venture and he has already received enquiries from tour bus operators.

“Last year’s Local Government Act allowed for the Auckland two-tier model of governance to be copied in some circumstances — that is, where a proposed metropolitan unitary authority has a population of more than 400,000 — but it did not enable this for smaller populations,” he said.

“Local boards have a genuine statutory role in the governance of a local authority, and cannot be disestablished unilaterally by the parent council. However, it is also important to note that they are not proposed to replace community boards — both options should be available.

“The sector has asked for the ability for local boards to be available to smaller regions. We will deliver this in the upcoming Bill.

“It will be up to the Local Government Commission in consultation with communities to determine when the addition of local boards is justified and desirable. It may be the case that local boards exist in only part of a district. In rural areas other arrangements, such as community boards or less formal bodies, like area sub-committees, might provide a local voice.”

60s Up is on the up and upNew principal at Otamatea High School by Alan Wheatley

While there’s nothing especially unusual about clubs and organisations for seniors, Dargaville is home to one that is maybe not as widely known as others, but also one with a surprisingly large membership.

60s Up is a group focussing on seniors, especially those men and women who live alone, providing an avenue for social interaction across a variety of activities, including day trips, club socialising, concerts and sports activities, including petanque and bowls.

President of the past 15 years, Margaret Pinny says the area has a large number of older people who live alone and who run the risk of becoming cut off and house-bound.

“We have 140 members just in Dargaville alone, but we also interact with clubs in Kamo, Whangarei and Bream Bay and we are part of a nation-wide collective of 60s Up clubs.”

Margaret says the group welcomes new members and meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the Dargaville Rugby Club rooms where there is usually a guest speaker along with a variety of activities.

During August, these speakers will include a visit by a member of Dargaville’s police, talking

A powhiri welcomed new principal, Rachel Clothier-Simmonds, to Otamatea High School.

Mrs Clothier-Simmonds took over from acting principal, Roy Fletcher, when term three began.

She comes to Maungaturoto after six years as assistant principal at McAuley High School in Otahuhu.

Her teaching career began in London. New Zealand was a destination on her world trip, but she says she fell in love with the country and all it had to offer, so decided to stay.

“After three months working on the Milford Track, I started teaching at Southern Cross Campus gaining experience as a dean and head of physical education.”

She began at McAuley High School in 2006 and was appointed the assistant principal within a year.

“Being assistant principal enabled me to work with an excellent senior management team. I completed the Aspiring Principal’s Programme run by the Ministry of Education which consolidated my understanding of the role of principal.”

She says she is looking forward to working with the staff at Otamatea High School and being involved with community activities.

about home security issues and a speaker just back from working with children in the US at Camp America.

Club members also help community groups where they can, and their latest donation is to the Dargaville Hospital Wish List.

Recently, the club hosted teams from Kamo and Bream Bay for the inaugural Regional Indoor Bowls Championship, which was won by the club’s Number 2 team narrowly outscoring Bream Bay’s Number 2 team.

Despite a grey, wet morning, there was a real carnival atmosphere and a steady crowd at the Dargaville Fire Station when radio station MORE FM set up shop to help raise funds for the Northland Emergency Services Trust rescue helicopter appeal.

Rescue chopper fundraiser takes off

Jeff said by half way through the breakfast event, funds raised had topped $1,400 but by the end of the morning, they had raised an amazing $5,532.

“We wanted to beat the guys at the

David Wilson, who since 2007 has been director of the Institute of Public Policy at AUT University, will take up his new role on Monday, September 9.

Mr Wilson says he’s looking forward to making a hands-on contributions in Northland and already has some well-developed links to the region, as well as a family bach at Rangiputa in the Far North. He and his wife Anna, a family doctor, have two children.

The station’s long-time breakfast team of John Markby and Angela ‘Flash’ Gordon were on hand, helping serve the full cooked breakfast on offer, while fire crew volunteers manned the donation buckets out in the street.

Chief Fire Officer, Jeff Palmer, said the volunteer brigade was really happy to help raise funds for the rescue helicopters, not only because of the great job they do, but the two services invariably turned out to the same jobs when the choppers were involved locally and worked closely together.

Jeff also said the Dargaville Brigade needed volunteers. To handle the more than 200 calls a year they receive, the station needs 30 staff, but presently, volunteers number around 20.

“Volunteer firefighters need to be over 16, physically fit with a clean record — and we’ll provide all the training. It’s a great way to give something back to the community.”

Art awards entries dueWork is underway at The Kauri Museum in preparation for the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Art Awards, with entries closing on August 23.

“The museums phone is running hot with enquiries about the exhibition, with space now being readied for the display,” said museum CEO, Bet Nelley.

“The awards evening will take place on the evening of the 30th August and all the artworks entered will then be on exhibition until September 25. The awards are organised by Mangawhai Artists and Dargaville Arts Association.

“With the museum central to both organisations, it has proved to be an excellent venue, with huge interest and attendances at last years inaugural event.

“Entry categories include painting and drawing, printmaking, adornments —

including jewellery and clothing — and three dimensional — including sculpture, pottery, metal, glass and wood and other material.

“There will be a People’s Choice Award given in the exhibition,” added Ms Nelley.

“Winners of each category will receive $400, a beautiful kauri trophy, a certificate and a rosette. Entry forms are on The Kauri Museum website and need to be received by Friday, August 23.”

Fashion, creativity and colour blend in Paparoa gala by Alan Wheatley

Anyone heading for the Paparoa Wearable Arts Gala on August 24 will be spoiled for choice this year, as there is so much to choose from, including a choice of matinee or evening champagne gala performances.

Organising Committee Spokesperson Loraine Rowlands, says entries have closed for this year’s event and almost 50 entries have been received.

“Entrants are coming from Dargaville, Maungakaramea, Ruawai, Mangawahi, Kamo, Maungaturoto, Waipu, Wellsford and a lot of other places, with entries across all categories of the event.”

This year, the gala promises to be even more varied with a large marquee being erected near the Paparoa War Memorial Hall, housing pre-show attractions, including complimentary light refreshments, musical entertainment and for the kids, a professional magician.

Loraine says both shows — at 1.15pm and 7.15pm — will feature the same line-up and both will kick off with a 45-minute curtain-raiser, and a glass of complimentary champagne or juice will be offered at the evening show.

“Once people are all seated, there’ll be a choreographed visual spectacular

of all the creations, and then the magician will perform followed by all of the entrants parading their creations, with full commentary from the show’s MC explaining the many facets around each entry.”

Judging and prize giving will follow the evening presentation, however some pre-judging at the dress rehearsal by this year’s judges Edele McDonald, Sue Matthews and Laura Burns, will help streamline the process.

Loraine says sponsorship has been great this year coming from a large range of sponsors right around the Kaipara district and demand for tickets for both shows has also been very brisk as there are no door sales.

Tickets are available from the Dargaville Sewing Centre, Long Flat Bacon, Skelton’s Drapery, Tony’s Maungaturoto, Bammas Mangawhai, Hammer Hardware Waipu, and Speedy Signs Whangarei.

THISWEEK!

The most significant spruce up perhaps has been the $750,000 remake of the main thoroughfare, with the New Zealand Transport agency coming to the party as its contribution to the event. The works were scheduled, so the timing was fortuitous.

But Hurndall Street has also seen a huge landscaping and planting project, with a park-like garden springing up near the service station, and exotic rock gardens and water features, and new pathways and steps adjacent to Dreams and the library and other businesses.

“Thanks to the beautification group the town area looks a million dollars with more to come,” says 150th celebrations committee president, Albie Paton.

“The whole district is getting into the spirit of things with road frontages and fences being tidied and painted. By the time November the first comes along we will have a district to be very proud of.”

A million dollar makeoverMaungaturoto has taken on a whole new look as the countdown ticks for the town and district 150th anniversary celebrations from Friday, November 1 to Sunday, November 3.

More real town beautification

A major project for the celebrations has been the restoration of the riverside landing where the Albertland pioneers stepped ashore — after wending their way up the Otamatea River, ending a journey that began on the other side of the world.

The wharf area includes reclaimed land, a boat ramp and walkways to make it a future waterside picnic and fishing spot. Already a boat ramp has been built, and Mr Paton is still hopeful that a rebuilt wharf will be ready for November, ‘financed from donations’. continued on page 8…

“Buy a plank, which will be permanently acknowledged at the site — or make a donation — now is the time. Any donation large or small will be very welcome.”

He said the organising committee has been meeting fortnightly and a detailed programme of events has been drawn up.

Registrations for the 150th will begin at 3pm on the Friday, followed by a ‘meet and greet’ at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and the opening of a time capsule from the town’s 1963 centenary.

On the Saturday, at 10.30am, there will be a settlers’ landing re-enactment and a powhiri at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road followed by a parade ‘through the ages’ to the Maungaturoto Country Club. Old time sports and

entertainment will occupy the afternoon, followed by a celebration dinner at the centennial hall.

On Sunday there will be an interdenominational church service and the dedication of a ‘memorial ashes wall’.

Throughout the weekend, there will be performances of a play written for the event, produced by the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, and history trails, with visitors guided around the district.

“We have some 90 days to go from August 1,” adds Mr Paton. “It sounds

a lot but time passes quickly when you still have lots to do.

“In the last three weeks we have removed some mangroves, reclaimed a piece of foreshore and built a boat ramp. If we don’t get our wharf built we will have an area where we can re-enact a landing.

“The voluntary effort that went into this area was fantastic with upwards of five diggers in various places many tractors and trailers, several trucks, and transporters, quarries supplying limestone, blue metal and rocks, and many people both men and women doing their bit either labouring or supplying food and drink to the workforce.

And local cafes have been to the fore with food and drink during the many working bees. It all shows the good old country spirit is alive and kicking in Maungaturoto.”

About ten cars made the journey for a weekend of driving, touring and socialising, with members visiting Trounson Kauri Park, Baylys Beach and the Packard and Pioneer Museum, (also known as the Anawhata Museum) at Maungatapere.

Proprietors Pam and Peter Kelly put on a special dinner and movie night for club members, who came in a varied assortment of classic cars from the old Rootes Group, which included Humber Super Snipes, a 1950s Humber 10, several later model Minxes and Super-Minxes and Humber 90s. Also included, whilst not Rootes

Group but still very British, was a beautifully presented a 1950s Alvis 3 litre saloon.

Another that stood out was an early sixties Simca Aronde. Simca (Societe Industrielle de Mecanique et Carrosserie Automobile) was accommodated into the English Rootes Group when the American car giant Chrysler bought out both Rootes and the French auto-maker in the mid-1960s.

Peter and Pam said it was the first time the club had used the Commercial Hotel as their meeting point, but all agreed the weekend was so enjoyable, they will certainly make it a regular visit.

The glory days of English motoring by Alan Wheatley by Andy Bryenton

There was nostalgia for everyone at Dargaville’s Commercial Hotel when they hosted a recent visit from the Humber & Hillman Car Club of Auckland.

Members of the Auckland Hillman and Humber Car Club show off some of theirclassics at Dargaville’s Commercial Hotel

The EV-Eliminator is a fully featured all electric quad bike with a military-spec motor and a range of over 30 miles across all kinds of terrain. The bike’s inventors have shunned costly-to-replace lithium ion batteries in favour of a system which can withstand over 800 recharges — giving the machine a six and a half year ‘fuel tank’ between battery replacements.

These quads are already hard at work on English farms, herding cows, fencing and mustering — all the jobs a petrol quad would usually accomplish. But of course, with a modern charging system and a convenient solar cell or windmill, the cost of running them day to day is absolutely free!

Off the grid and into the driver’s seat

With many rural folks going ‘off the grid’ and sourcing their electricity for free, how about this idea from a small company in Devon, England?

But for an off road machine — and one which can offer thrills and steer clear of spills across some of the roughest terrain — 101 horsepower is still a little scary.

That is, until you see how this power is deployed to the ground in the latest iteration of Can Am’s successful Maverick, a machine which leads its class in power, but matches that grunt with some clever agility.

Sure, that big 1000cc Rotax engine churns out a formidable mountain of torque, but its a combination of intelligent chassis layout, independent rear suspension, and partnership components from some big industry names which make this exciting off roader really fly.

The first stage of taming those 101 horses is control. Can Am teamed up with Bosch to create an intelligent throttle-by-wire system which irons out

the bumps. Just nailed that big jump, but worried that a toe in the wrong place will send you revving into a ditch?

Don’t worry — the throttle control system detects unwanted bounces and bumps, smoothing the ride. A ‘bulletproof’ CVT transmission handles getting torque to the wheels where it’s needed.

Keeping those wheels planted is down to a combination of the Maverick’s high frame rigidity and mid-engined layout (think about those mid-engined supercars with stiff carbon frames), coupled with double a-arm front suspension and torsion trailing arm rear suspension, all set up with Fox shocks, a name with racing pedigree. Final drive is routed through 27 inch Maxxis tyres, and the anchors for this beast are a set of four 214mm vented disc brakes. The Maverick has over a foot of ground clearance, too.

Thrill-seeking missile launchedThere was a time, not so long ago, when 101 horsepower was considered somewhat excessive for a road-going car. Today, it’s almost the norm for a proper performance vehicle to top the ‘ton’.

What led Susie, originally from San Diego, to move to Dargaville was love. Among her past occupations she artificially inseminated dairy cows, travelling to Kaipara from Auckland.

“I fell in love with one of the farmers.”

She moved to Dargaville four years ago and her partner, David Bellamy, built her an art studio on his farm.

She has since traded in yacht racing for horse riding and has a history with textiles, which ranges from making sails for America’s Cup yachts to spinning and weaving silk garments.

Susie was inspired by her great aunty who was asked by the King of Denmark to participate in a project in the early 1900s to teach some of the lost handcrafts such as lace making and tatting to a new generation.

When she came to New Zealand in 1995 she joined the Auckland Spinners

Susie Petersen and her pashmina style scarfs at the Dargaville Art Association’s third birthday exhibition

The band asked Creative Northland to run the audition process and Regional Ar ts Development Manager Laura Burns says they will hold auditions at each town the band will visit on their tour.

Fly My Pretties — whose sound is described as folk/rock acoustic — differs from regular bands in that they are a collaboration of Wellington musicians who only record live albums in various locations in New Zealand. Founded in Wellington in 2004, they include members from the Black Seeds, Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Phoenix Foundation and Paseload.

Only original compositions were allowed and two Dargaville duos auditioned, with their performances filmed by Creative Northland, who will submit them to the band for final judging, prior to the tour kick-off.

Pete O’Neill and Dan Collett who together, are Roger Delta Charlie, performed alongside another local act, The Olly Knox Band who are Olly Knox and Emma McCool. Both acts have been together and performing locally, around New Zealand and even overseas for the past decade or more.

Assisting with the filming of the auditions was a case of déjà vu for Creative Northland’s Funding and Project Co-ordinator, Rosie Riggir — she produced the first release for Fly my Pretties back in 2004.

and Weavers Guild, where she gained a wealth of knowledge and experience.

“When I worked for the America’s Cup everything was a secret, but the guild was about sharing ideas.”

Her current work is a weaving exploration in colour and texture which draws from a variety of fibres including silk, wool, cashmere, soy, linen, mink, yak, angora, cotton, and synthetic, the end product is a pashmina style scarf.

Her work is on display at the Dargaville Art Association’s third birthday exhibition, 108 Victoria Street, as well as the Muddy Water Gallery or by special appointment in her studio 09 439 0552.

Exciting break for local music acts by Alan Wheatley

The Dargaville Library came alive to the sound of music when auditions were held to find a local band or act to open for long-time Kiwi indie band, Fly my Pretties on their upcoming Northland tour.

alongside the Pirate Ship playground. The gardens gained the block of land alongside the Countdown carpark up to the Warehouse fence, and bounded by the Heritage Garden.

Carolyn says while the changes will be disruptive for a while, the trustees believe the land swap arrangement is in the best interests of the gardens and that the residents of Kaipara and their visitors can look forward to enjoying both revitalised gardens and a brand new supermarket expected to open early next year.

A quilt show called Domestic Bliss will be held in the Fosters Arcade in Dargaville and will display the members’ work, August 13 to 17.

The shows is held biannually and the last show in 2011 raised around $1800 for organisations.

This year the proceeds will go to the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade, Kaipara Hospice, Northland Rescue Helicopter and the Dargaville Hospital wishlist.

One of the two quilts being raffled off is the Calendar Quilt on display at Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre.

Each square represents a month of the year with 12 squares in total. The sewing centre provided 12 members with a month as well as an inspirational word.

Member Judith Herbert was given

Dargaville Quilter’ member Judith Herbert, and Marion McEwing from the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre, stand with the Calendar Quilt which will be raffled off for worthy causes

November, and her inspirational work was fireworks for Guy Fawkes.

A quilt titled, A Labour of Love, is also on display at the Dargaville Hospice Shop.

The show will be open 9.30am-4.30pm with $2 entry.

Dargaville Gardens Trust secretar y/treasurer Carolyn Beaz ley, says Countdown wi l l soon begin ground-works as part of preparations for the new supermarket. This will include demolishing the old “red shed,” erecting a fence just outside the new boundary line, digging trenches and building a low retaining wall.

“We are going to move one of the slides on the Pirate Ship, and temporarily remove a picnic table, benches and a seat. We know the many people who use our gardens will be affected by this, and we ask visitors to take extra care while the work is happening, especially when children are on the pirate ship.”

In early 2012, Countdown and the Dargaville Gardens trustees agreed to change their shared boundary in a land swap deal so that Countdown could build a new supermarket.

Norman Christian Dalebrook passed away on June 17, a month after his 89th birthday.

He was much loved by his wife, Beth, his children and grandchildren, and the Maungaturoto community.

He was involved with many organisations including the Centenary Celebrations, the Hall Committee, Rotary, Otamatea Repertory Theatre and the International Car Rally.

“His administration talents raised many thousands of dollars for many community projects, including funds to build the Centennial Hall,” says Beth Dalebrook.

The property is now home to the Repertory Theatre and the Country Club.

He served on many committees for long periods. He was the secretary on the hall committee for 40 years and was twice president of the Rotary Club.

Born in England, after applying to attend agricultural college in several countries he was accepted by Massey and Lincoln and moved to Maungaturoto after obtaining his degree.

He bought property on Bickerstaff Road and ran a sheep and beef farm with the help of his wife.

While in latter years they moved to Whangarei, the funeral was held in Maungaturoto in the community that Norman loved.

The Trustees of the Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust would like to express our immense gratitude to all the people across the Kaipara District who have contributed their money, expertise, time and skills to make the ANZAC Theatre a reality after four years’ work.

Without the support of people too numerous to name and that of the Kaipara District Council, Lotteries Grants Board, ASB Community Trust, COGS, Transpower and Creative NZ this would not have happened.

We have also been humbled by the number of people who have volunteered to help us provide state

of the art cinema entertainment and a flexible multi-purpose auditorium for the people of this area.

Lastly, we would like to thank the 2,400 people who have come to the Theatre to see a movie in our first two weeks. Their support and enthusiasm make it all worthwhile.

We are all proud of what has been achieved so far. It has been a true community effort.

Thank you once again to everyone involved.
