Jesus attracted big crowds of people wherever He went. They loved listening to Him tell stories through parables.

Parables are short stories that teach a moral lesson or truth. Jesus spoke in parables when teaching a crowd. Through parables, He was able to communicate to them about the Kingdom of Heaven. Because His parables made use of examples familiar to them, He was able to effectively teach them about the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, which were otherwise difficult to explain.

Sang Hulyo 12, Sabado, alas 5:30 sa hapon, ginpatawag ni Msgr. Higinio Velarde, Kura Paroko sang Jaro Cathedral, ang

mga katapo sang Parish Pastoral Council kag Parish Finance Council para sa isa ka paghinun-anon. Nagtililipon sila sa Pius XII Institute kon sa diin napahamtang subong ang mga opisina sang Parokya.

Sa sini nga pagtililipon, ginpaathag ni Engr. Nilo Jardeleza sa mga katapo sang Parish Pastoral kag Finance Councils ang mga plano sa pagpabakod kag pagpakay-o sang convento. Iya ginpakita ang estruktura sa gwa nga bahin sang convento kag ang floor plan sang duha ka panalgan.

On one occasion, Jesus proposed three parables to the crowd, and we find this in our Gospel for this Sunday, in Matthew 13:24-43. Here, Jesus tells us about the Children of the Kingdom and of the coming Kingdom of Heaven. He explains that in our world, both good and evil exist together and will be so until the end of time, and including even in His own time. Good always exists with evil, at the other end; the good Christian and the evildoer will always continue to live together in the same

community and are part of our Christian journey. My contemplative Carmelite spiritual sister once told me, “There is good because there is evil.”

In today’s world, we find ourselves scandalized on the many controversial issues that we read in newspapers, or see on television, or those that we hear on radio. All these unhappy issues may tempt us to conclude that our world has become

Sa sini nga bahin, aton hangpon ang ginapatuman sang Ikapito nga Sugo kag sang kaangot sini nga amo ang

Ikanapulo nga Sugo. May kaangtanan ini sa pagtulon-an sang Simbahan nahanungod sa hustisya sosyal, ilabi na gid ang mga sala nga naangot diri kag nahanungod sa pribado nga pagkabutang. Matun-an man naton diri ang positibo nga ginatudlo sang Simbahan nahanungod sa duna nga dignidad sang tawo, ang pagka-importante sang trabaho sang tawo, ang pagpasulabi sa mga imol kag ang kaangtanan sa tunga sang hustisya kag paghigugma.

Ano ang Ikapito nga Sugo?Ang Ikapito nga Sugo nagasiling: “Indi

ka magpangawat.” (Ex. 20:15; Dt. 5:19). Ini nga dinalan mabasahan sa Libro sang Daan nga Kasugtanan. Kag sa paglakat sang mga panahon, ang simple nga sugo nga “indi magpangawat” nag-agi sa madamo nga mga pagtubo kag pagkambio.

Ang istorya ni Jose, ang paborito nga anak ni Jacob nga ginbaligya sang iya mga utod sa bili nga 30 ka bilog nga pilak (cf. Gen. 37) tungod kay nahisa sila sa iya, nagapakita nga ginadumilian ang pag-kidnap. After presiding a funeral Mass one rainy afternoon, I chose to chat with the people seeking refuge from the

heavy rains near the coffee machine of the Jaro Parish Youth Ministry. During our lively conversation, Corazon and Violeta, our two elderly who beg within the vicinity of our Cathedral Compound, offered me something to drink. They wanted to give me coffee or hot choco from the coffee machine where they would usually get their drink for five pesos. At first, I was hesitant because I didn’t want that they would get an amount from what they had received from other people which they could still use for other purposes. But with the thought that I may be insulting them for refusing their offer, I allowed them to show their love to me. Taking something from their meager collection, they bought me coffee which I drank while we were conversing. I can sense the happiness in their hearts for they had shared their blessings to me.

With this experience, I remember Paul’s farewell speech to the elders of Ephesus. He said, “I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way, we help the weak,

Rules are statements that tell us what is or is not allowed in a particular situation. Observing these rules helps us promote

peace and order. They also give us direction where the group is heading to.

In our Ministry, we answered the need of having rules to be followed so that we’ll be able to build awareness upon ourselves, and consciously watch our actions and build discipline that will make us better leaders of our community.

We suggested rules that we thought very essential in pursuing our goals of building an organized and sustaining ministry. Here are the specific rules approved by the council especially during our meeting:

1. Youth Council members should attend the 5:30pm Youth Mass every Saturday. Punctuality must be observed.

The Jaro Parish Youth Ministry had a film showing last July 11 at the Legion Hall. The movie is about the life of Mother Teresa.

I myself admitted that I’ve known a lot of saints by name but not their stories on how they became saints. One of the saints I’ve known is Mother Teresa. I do not know how she became a saint until we had that film showing. Now I know how Mother Teresa loved the poor, she even left her fellow sisters in her convent just to be with the poor, to experience how they live.

I do understand her feelings toward the poor, I, having everything in my life, while

2. No using of cell phones and other gadgets while the Mass and meeting are going on.

3. Each member should bring his/her own writing materials for note taking.

4. Public display of affection is prohibited.5. Every absence will incur P10.00 fine

and the absentee should submit an honest excuse letter signed by the Youth Coordinator and the Youth Director.

6. A council member who had incurred five consecutive absences without valid reasons will be out from the council.

7. Barangay Youth Coordinators and Sub-Ministry Heads with their Assistants must attend the meeting.

8. Youth Council members should wear proper attire and should observe proper decorum at all times.

9. Nobody should leave the meeting ahead without a valid reason.

10. Avoid unnecessary going out while the Mass and meeting are going on.A faithful young servant commits to

follow rules for the success of the Ministry. These rules tell us to discipline ourselves and give our full attention during the Mass and meeting. As we continue our journey in the Youth Ministry, God also allows us to learn and develop our skills that will help us become better persons. We are guided and inspired by the Holy Spirit to reach our maximum potential. We give our God-given time, talent and treasure to bring back the glory and praises to Him.

We always bear in mind that whatever we are doing, we are not only doing it to protect the image and reputation of the ministry, but we do it because we love ourselves, the Church and most especially, our Lord!

the poor have nothing at all. Eating thrice a day and usually with desserts, while the poor, only once a day, or worst, ending the day without it. Going to a prestigious school yet managing to cut classes to go to the mall and buy unnecessary materials while the poor in the film, or even the poor in our society, don’t even know how to read or to write.

Leaders who managed to steal people’s money for their personal benefits resulted to the poverty of men. But imagine that our Creator, our Maker, our Father, our God is so merciful that He sends people like Mother Teresa to spread the Good News to the people,

to do good and help the needy. Mother Teresa said this line which affected me: “People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For, you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”

Plenary Council of the Philippines teaches us, “In the Church, nobody is so poor as to have nothing to give, and nobody is so rich as to have nothing to receive (#98).

Let us bear in mind the Seven Corporal Works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead.

Let us strive to practice also the Spiritual Works of Mercy: admonish the sinner, instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, comfort the sorrowful, bear wrongs patiently, forgive all injuries, pray for the living and the dead.

When we do this, I believe that we can truly be happy and fulfilled as Christians for there is more joy in giving than in receiving!

Relative to our upcoming Parish Convent Construction, let us be merciful in sharing God’s blessings for this project. All of us can contribute as nobody is so poor as to have nothing to give.

When we give, when we show mercy, when we love… we shall never be found lacking in happiness!

remembering that the Lord Jesus himself said, ‘There is more happiness in giving than in receiving’” (Acts 20, 35).

Our Catholic Bishops’ Conference here in the Philippines exhorts us to be a people rich in mercy as we prepare ourselves for the coming of Pope Francis here in our country next year and even beyond.

I believe that more than being recipients of God’s mercy and of other people’s, we should strive to become agents of mercy to others. We believe in what the Second

Sang amon pagdul-ong sang Urna sa ila balay nagpangabay sila nga kon mahimo mapakadtuan sing pari ang ila iloy nga tigulang na kag masunsun nagapangakig kag nagasinggitan. Nagadali sia nga mapatay gani ginhambalan sia sang iya anak nga indi pa sia mapatay kay wala pa sia makahinulsol sang iya mga sala. Sabat man sia nga, “Wala takon et sala.”

Sa pagpati sang iya kabataan basi pa lang magtinong sia kon makakonpesar kag mabadlisan.

Pag-abot sa balay,

Last July 5, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Higinio Velarde and Msgr. Alejandro

Esperancilla had a meeting with the members of the Cofradia de la Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles. In the said meeting attended by nine Cofradia members, Msgr. Velarde presented to the body the statutes of the National Shrine with special emphasis on the sections which directly involved the Cofradia. It must be recalled that the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Jaro was declared a National Shrine through a decree approved unanimously by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on July 16, 2011.

Under the statutes, the Shrine shall be under the Pastoral Administration of a Rector, who shall be, at the same time, the Parish Priest of the Parish and Rector of the Jaro Cathedral.

The Cofradia has a vital role in assisting the Rector in the formation of guidelines and policies for the administration and implementation of the programs of the Shrine.

Nathaniel kag ginbendisyonan. Pagkatapos nangin matayuyon naman ang ila pagsugilanonay.

Sang hana na si Padre nga mapauli, nagpakuha sia sing papel kag ballpen. Iya ginsulat ang mga tinaga nga “Love”, “Peace”, “Be kind”, kag “Be Gentle”, …kag ginhambalan sia nga indi lang kay basahon niya ining nasulat kundi ang importante nga isulod ini sa iya tagipusuon kag buhat. Nasadyahan gid ang tigulang kag manami gid ang iya yuhom-yuhom matapos sia makakonpesar.

Maayo gid man nga ang aton mga kapari-an makabisita sa mga barangay nga sakop sang parokya agud ila masaksihan ang matuod-tuod nga sitwasyon sang ila parokyano, ilabi na gid sa mga tigulang agud ila mapabatyag ang pag-ulikid, pag-unong kag pagpahalipay paagi sa Maayong Balita.

Nangin maayo ang epekto sadtong pagbisita ni Fr. Nathaniel kay wala na ako sing nabatian nga kon ano man sa pihak nga balay. Gani ako mismo, “Feel fulfilled” man tungod amon napatigayon ang espiritwal nga kinahanglanon sang mga katapo sang amon Magagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban. Mamag-an ang karga kon ang tanan nagabuligay!

According to Msgr. Velarde, the Cofradia is the soul of the National Shrine and without it the Shrine cannot exist. Thus, the charism of the Cofradia is to promote true devotion to Mary, Our Lady of Candles.

Then, last July 13, twenty-three members were in attendance when Msgr. Velarde presented the proposed By-laws of the Cofradia. Together with Msgr. Alejandro Esperancilla, the Spiritual Adviser, the group made minor amendments. The By-laws will have to be ratified by the Rector and are to be reviewed and approved by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Jaro for its effectivity.

The next meeting is set on July 27, 10:00 a.m., for the election of the Council of Elders. The Council shall be the over-all policy-making, supervising and coordinating body of the Cofradia. This will be composed of 7 members to be elected from among the active members present. Then the Council of Elders will elect the “Custodian of the Shrine”, after which, the Secretary and Treasurer will also be elected. Their election will be confirmed by the Parish Priest.

July 14, 2014. With the ongoing tension and violence in the Holy Land, the Pope made a call for

peace, urging everyone to pray for Israel and Palestine.

As he looked over St. Peter’s Square during the Sunday Angelus, he said that despite the spike in violence, the prayer meeting he hosted with the presidents of Israel and Palestine, was not in vain.

“Some may think that the prayer meeting was useless. You’re wrong! Prayer helps us not get carried away by evil, so that violence and hate are not trumped by dialogue and reconciliation.”

He then asked the thousands of pilgrims gathered out in the Square to take a few moments of silence to pray for peace. The Pope also read a prayer, he personally wrote.

true love is not about sex, but sacrifice.“Love is not sex…True love consists in sacrifice,

in the denying of oneself for a higher purpose, for the good of another …It is placing your beloved’s need before one’s own,” Monsignor Severino Anatalio said during a recent confirmation rite at the National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels in Manila.

According to Anatalio, many relationships fail because it lacks this essential component, driven as they are by lust.

Directing his audience’s gaze towards a life-like image of the Crucified Christ hanging above the main altar, Anatalio exclaimed, “This is true love!”

San Miguel’s elderly parish priest, who has decades of experience behind him conducting seminars for couples about to get married, explained to those present that authentic love is never built on lust, on what he referred to as the “heat of the moment”.

Noting that he was addressing a relatively young audience, he asked, “How many of you here have patronized motels? How many of you have engaged in premarital sex?”

The St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School (SEHKS) Federated and Homeroom Parent Teachers Association

(FPTA & HPTA) and the Teacher’s Club had their induction of officers last Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the La Isabelita Hall.

This school year’s FPTA President is Mr. Rolito Milan and the Teacher’s Club President is Mrs. Analiza Cajolo, teacher adviser of the Kinder I-A, AM, and PM Class.

The event was attended by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Higinio C. Velarde, VG, HP, SEHKS School Director, Fr. Ronald C. De Leon, SEHKS Assistant School Director, who inducted the HPTA. Msgr. Velarde who inducted the Teacher’s Club and the FPTA. Also in attendance were Mr. Armand Parcon, former FPTA President; Mrs. Elenita G. Java, the new SEHKS Principal; and Mrs. Emma C. Victoria, Special Assistant to the Director for Finance.

The Faculty and Staff gave a much applauded energizer demonstration while selected students gave an intermission number. Some parents gave a surprise dance number. The outgoing Treasurer gave

a report on the FPTA financial status. Msgr. Velarde gave a very inspiring message, saying, “Partnership is very important for the kids. The role of the parents is greater, because the children spend most of the time at home. The parents are the primary educators of the children and the teachers are the cooperators when they (Kids) are in school.” A parent and a teacher, Mr. Alvin Dennis Arabang and Mrs. Roselyn D. Salazar, respectively, were the Masters of Ceremonies.

The St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School (SEHKS) was founded on November 17, 1987. On its 27th year, for the school year 2014-2015, the school has 409 enrollees with 221 male and 188 female pupils ages ranging from 2 ½ to 5 ½ years old. The SEHKS extension school in Brgy. Cuartero has 33 students. Each class has an average of 25 pupils.

SEHKS has eight (8) teachers and eight (8) teacher’s aide with five (5) non-teaching staff. Mrs. Elenita G. Java, the new School Principal, is a retired Principal of the Jaro I Elementary School.

Nobody is perfect – nobody is free from shortcomings. No matter how beautiful we are, there is always something in

us that is not nice to look at. No matter how intelligent we are, there are some subjects which are beyond our intelligence. No matter how wealthy we are, there are some valuables which are beyond our capacity to possess.

We are only human and we are prone to criticize whenever we see or feel that something is out of place; but, criticisms must be done with consideration and with Christian generosity. We must remember that we, too, have our defects, and would be grateful if others could help us remove them through gentle suggestions. If we do not want to get hurt, others feel the same.

Sometimes, we make things worse by gossiping with others the defects that we see in some persons. Do you like to be treated in this way?

Our Bible and our booklets in Catechesis are filled with beautiful teachings which can guide us wherever we are and whatever we are doing. There are gems of the brightest brilliance contained in our Epistles and Gospels, and if we want to follow God, we must listen to them and live as real Christians.

There are many religious beliefs here

in the Philippines. The Spaniards, the Americans, and the Japanese, have instilled in some of us their religious teachings and beliefs and since we are living in a democratic country, we are free to practice what we believe in. Although we have the freedom to criticize what others say and do, we must never forget that if we are free to stand on our own platform, they, too, are free. Sometimes, however, we forget ourselves, and allow our weakness to overcome us. When the feeling comes, I invite you to plead to God the Father to give you the strength and the courage to say this prayer:

Lord, make me an instrument of Your Peace (Think of God and feel His Presence.)

Where there is hatred, let me sow loveWhere there is injury, pardonWhere there is darkness, light

Grant God that I may not seek to be consoled as to console

To be loved, as to loveFor it is in giving that we receive

It is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

My dear brothers and sisters, we must have an honest and thorough examination

more evil and notorious. Jesus cautions us to beware and to watch and to be prayerful.

As Christians, we can distinguish what is good in the eyes of God because the Holy Spirit helps us to see the evil that exists at the opposite end. To walk along God’s path or the devil’s path depends on our personal choice, backed up by the strength of our respective Christian upbringings. What then, can we learn from today’s three parables about the good and the evil in us, Christians?

In Jesus’ three parables we learn about the reward for the faithful children of the Kingdom. These are the baptized Christians to which we belong. Jesus also explains in these three parables what a good Christian is all about.

In the first parable, Jesus likens the good Christian to the good seed that becomes the wheat crop and produces fruit. This good seed that is sown by the Sower in His field grows together with the weeds sown by the Sower’s enemy when everyone is asleep. Both are left to grow till harvest time, when the wheat will be gathered and kept safe in the barn, and the weeds tied up and burned. Jesus explains to His disciples that the Sower of the good seed is The Son of Man. The good seed are the Children of the kingdom of God. The field is the world. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who

sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are the angels of God sent from Heaven to conduct those who had led good Christian lives into Heaven, Those who had led sinful lives and had caused others to sin will be sent into the fiery furnace of hell to be burned eternally. “The righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of the Father.” The righteous person referred to by Jesus is the good Christian.

In the second parable, Jesus likens the good Christian to the mustard seed which grows into a large bush with healthy branches and becomes safe shelter and “dwelling place for the birds of the sky”. This mustard bush is like the good Catholic Christian who grows well in the love and mercy of God because he is faithful to Him in all his days. The good Christian’s life is a reflection of the goodness of God. In him other persons find a source of well-being and good example. He is not perfect, but Christ Jesus’ charity and mercy is reflected in the good Christian’s personhood, he becomes an inspiration to his kabarangays, they also want to become like him, a safe shelter of goodwill in a world full of dangers and uncertainties.

In the third parable, Jesus symbolizes the good Christian to the yeast that is mixed with three measures of wheat flour that rises, doubles and multiplies in bulk, and becomes

leavened dough. This wheat flour and yeast mix is like the person whose good deeds, and good example, reach out to boundaries unknown. He inspires other persons to also extend their goodness to more persons.

In the three parables, the good Christian’s spiritual growth is symbolized: from good seed to wheat fruit (good basic catechism); from mustard seed to mustard bush (good works); from wheat and yeast to leavened dough (prayers and intercessions).

In our communities, in the barangays and parishes of our localities, in the many Magagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban (MKK) communities, we can find many good Catholic Christians quietly contributing their share in making this world a better place in which to live. We find in their goodness a taste of God’s Heavenly Kingdom. We consider these good Christians our hidden saints and our silent heroes.

In our own humble, hidden, and unacknowledged ways, in the many MKKs in the barangays, we can be like the good seed that grows into the wheat crop, and bears good fruit. We can be like the mustard seed whose branches provide shelter and safe refuge to other weary Christians. We can be like the wheat and yeast mix whose good deeds multiply in others, and are also responded to with more good deeds by more people.

Joy H. Gefesof our conscience before we criticize anyone. Let us look into our hearts and if we have the honesty to accept our failures and shortcomings, we will know how to accept our limitations, we will understand thoroughly and with all proficiency the religion we have chosen, we will live with our fellowmen who are also the real children of God.

I am very grateful to my elders who have done their best to fertilize the seed of Christianity in us.

Piamonte, who gave my husband and me, a certificate of permission to conduct lectures and seminars in the Archdiocese of Jaro, and to His Eminence Cardinal Jaime L. Sin, for supporting us even if he was already assigned to Manila.
