Stop card hits big Stop signAfter roughly two decades of use, the oft-

controversial Stop card found in most ACBL bidding boxes will soon be missing from ACBL tournaments.

During meetings at this tournament, the ACBL Board of Directors voted 20-5 to eliminate the Stop card for any sanctioned tournament that starts after Jan. 1.

ACBL-affiliated clubs are not required to remove the Stop card from bidding boxes but are encouraged to do so.

Players, meanwhile, are reminded of the obligation to pause in the direct seat after a skip bid so as to avoid making unauthorized information available to their partners. Fast action – any call or bid – is also covered in this admonition. Players should strive to maintain an even tempo during the auction.

The board’s vote came in response to a recommendation from the Competition and Conventions Committee to end the use of the Stop card.

Buy your NABC entry online

Don’t wait in line! Buy your entries in advance for all national-level events at BridgeWinners.com.

Entries must be purchased by 10 a.m. the day of the event EXCEPT for events that require pre-registration, in which case the ACBL deadline, or the earlier of the two, applies.

A nice feature: You can buy entries in advance and be charged for the total number of sessions played after the event is over.

Bridge Bucks and Check Cashing

Bridge Bucks and check cashing services are available on the Lobby Level of the Convention Centre daily from 9:30 to 10 a.m. and Noon to 1 p.m.

Bridge Bucks will be sold for $20 USD and will be valued at $25 CAD during the Toronto NABC. Note: Bridge Bucks are sold in USD. There are no fees if a U.S. credit card is used for purchases, but fees may apply for those using non-U.S. cards.

Players may use VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express to purchase Bridge Bucks. There is a daily $500 limit on check cashing. Help speed up the entry line:

Pay with CDN currencyPlayers can help speed up the line for buying

entry fees by paying in Canadian currency. Players who present U.S. currency at the selling desk slow down the process by forcing the directors to first exchange currency and then make change.

There are many nearby places where currency may be exchanged. Help make the pre-game experience better by having your entry fees ready in the proper amount and in Canadian currency.

No discount at “The Loose Moose”

Attendees at the Toronto NABC should be aware that the NABC Restaurant Guide – which includes discount offers at various local restaurants – erroneously included a discount offer at The Loose Moose. The restaurant has made clear that it never agreed to such an offer. There is no discount at The Loose Moose.

Players should check with the management at any dining establishment about the status of offers presented in the NABC Restaurant Guide in advance to avoid misunderstandings.

Tips to improve your game - Part 6

By Brent Manley

Teams versus pairsDuplicate offers two ways to play, and there are

important differences between the formats. Some of you will play mostly or exclusively in

pairs games, where it’s just you and your partner against the field – that is, the rest of the pairs in your event. The other format is teams.

In pairs, you get your scores through the computer’s comparison of your result on each board to that of the other pairs playing your direction (East-West or North-South). For every pair whose score you beat, you get one matchpoint. You get half a matchpoint for each time your score is the same as another pair’s.

Say you are playing in a 13-table section as East-West. On each board, you will have the chance for 12 matchpoints (North-South have the same opportunity). If your score is better than all the other pairs sitting your way, you get what is known as a top. You don’t have to get some huge score, like plus 1400, to beat the other pairs. It doesn’t matter how much higher your score is – only that it’s higher. Similarly, if your minus on a board is lower than that of the other pairs, you have earned another top.

In pairs and in teams, it pays to be active in the bidding, but not overly so. You should tread lightly when you are vulnerable, especially if the other side is not. You can be more aggressive when the opponents are vulnerable and you are not.

In the teams format, scores also come from comparisons, but only at one other table. If you are playing in a Swiss teams or knockout, you and your partner will sit one way (East-West or North South) and your teammates will sit the other way at another table.

When all the boards are played at both tables,

East-West return to the home table, where their teammates were playing, to compare scores. Say East-West bid and made 4♥ on the first board and made it for plus 620 (they were vulnerable). If North-South managed to defeat the same contract for plus 100, the net for the team on that board would be 720, a gain of 12 International Matchpoints (IMPs). The IMP scale can be found on the inside of every ACBL convention card.

In Swiss teams, you usually play six or seven rounds with different opponents after each round. IMP scores are converted to victory points (that scale is also in the convention card) and the computer matches teams with similar records after each round.

In knockouts, you usually play 24 boards against the same team. The losing team is knocked out of the event. The winning team for the event is the one that goes undefeated. In teams, you never risk your contract for overtricks. The gain, usually only an IMP, is not worth the risk of a 12-IMP loss.

More on negative doublesYesterday, you were introduced to the negative

double, which helps you cope with the opponents’ overcalls after partner opens the bidding. A double of an overcall typically shows support for the unbid suits. The convention is also useful in a way many players don’t know about. Say partner opens 1♣ and RHO overcalls 1♠. You hold ♠ 6 2 ♥ Q 8 3 ♦ Q J 10 9 7 6 ♣K 6

You want to bid 2♦ but you don’t have the requisite HCP. The solution is to double, ostensibly showing the unbid suits. If partner bids 2♥ and RHO passes, you can bid 3♦ to show length in the suit but not enough high-card strength to bid directly. That will keep partner from going overboard if she happens to have three-card diamond support. Even if LHO raises partner to 2♠ and the bidding comes back to you, it would not be unreasonable for you to show your suit at the three level, so long as the vulnerability is not against you.

to 19 HCP. The 3♠ bid is invitational and shows 20-21 HCP. Partner could have nothing! As South, you have enough to accept partner’s invitation.

Defensive commentary: As East, start a high-low in hearts. On the third heart, discard the ♣2.

You need partner to play a fourth heart to promote your ♠J, so make a negative discard (♣2) in a suit partner is likely to lead (clubs).

Defensive commentary #2: As West, honor partner’s discard of the ♣2, telling you nothing doing there. If there is nothing doing in clubs, the only hope is that partner has the ♠J, in which case you must lead a fourth round of hearts for a trump promotion.

When making a discard in a situation where you need a trump promotion and want partner to

give declarer a ruff and sluff , discard negatively in a suit partner is likely to want to lead (clubs in this case). Don’t waste a discard in a suit (diamonds) partner is unlikely to want to lead in any case.

Wernher Open Pairs begins today

The Wernher Open Pairs – formerly the National Men’s Pairs (1934–1991) and Open Pairs II (1992–2002) – is a four-session event consisting of two qualifying sessions and two final sessions.

The event was contested at the Summer NABC until 1962. It moved to the Spring NABC in 1963 where it remained for 40 years. In 2004, the Wernher Open Pairs returned to the Summer NABC lineup.

The trophy was donated in 1934 by Sir Derrick J. Wernher. Wernher (1889–1947) was a resident of London, England and Deal NJ. A leading personality in American bridge in the ’30s, Wernher was president of the American Bridge League in 1933, chairman of its Master Plan committee and a member of the board of directors of the American Whist League.

Wernher placed second in the Asbury Challenge Teams (now the Spingold Knockout Teams) in 1936 and won the Reisinger (played in conjunction with the New York regional) in 1930.Winners:National Men’s Pairs1934 David Burnstine, Oswald Jacoby1935 Edward Cook, Fred French1936 Richard Ecker, Fred Kaplan1937 Edward Cook, John Kunkle1938 B. Electronic device policy The electronic device policy at NABCs allows

players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off. Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event.

This event was held at the Summer North American Championships until 1963. Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

reasoning of the C and C Committee is that more people were using the Stop card for the benefit of their own partnerships than for that of the opponents.

Another factor is that many players – particularly the less-experienced – don’t understand it.

The bottom line, in the committee’s thinking, is that the pluses of using the Stop card don’t outweigh the minuses of its abuse.

Grand Life Master Patty Tucker, who has vast experience with new players, approves of the move. Experienced players, she said, are expected to do the right thing at the table and don’t need the Stop card. For many others, it’s a mystery. “It’s very difficult for many new players to understand, and they already have so much to think about,” she said. “It’s just unnecessary.”

Playing for the runners-up were Nellissen of Washington Township NJ, Bob Gwirtzman of Brooklyn NY, Stephen Mackay of Markam ON and James Priebe of Mississauga ON. Their total was 116.57 VP.

Narrowly behind in third place was Edward Piken’s squad with 116.37 VP and Glenn Eisenstein’s team with 116.10 VP.

be scent-sitive!Some people have an extreme sensitivity to

fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Nice agreementBy Oren Kriegel

You can never be sure just how good your result is until you compare with your teammates. Here was a board from the GNT quarterfinal match that my team (District 13) lost to the eventual winners of the event (District 21). Dlr: West ♠ Q J 7 5 3 2 Vul: N-S ♥ 5 4 3 ♦ 8 ♣ Q 7 3 ♠ 4 ♠ 8 ♥ J 10 9 6 ♥ A 8 7 2 ♦ 6 3 ♦ A K Q 10 7 4 ♣ A J 9 6 5 4 ♣ 10 2 ♠ A K 10 9 6 ♥ K Q ♦ J 9 5 2 ♣ K 8

At my table, I passed the West cards as dealer. My partner, Ron Smith, opened 1♦ as East, Lew Stansby overcalled 1♠, I doubled, JoAnna Stansby bid 4♠, and we eventually sacrificed in 5♥ down two. Minus 300 seemed like a good result, as the opponents are cold for plus 620 4♠, but I was counting my chickens a little early.

At the other table, Kit Woolsey was West, and he opened 3♣. Preempting wouldn’t necessarily keep North-South out of the bidding, and it might make it harder to find the sacrifice, depending on how the auction times out, but East-West had the agreement that 3♦ over 3♣ was nonforcing. South had a strong hand, but with dangerous holdings in both of the opponents’ suits and only five spades, can you really fault him for passing? West had an easy pass, and North could hardly balance at the three level, vulnerable, with two queens and a jack. 3♦ made on the nose for plus 110 and 9 IMPs to District 21. Martel and Woolsey found the best kind of sacrifice -- one that makes!

players from Toronto, Penny Robinson (left) and Debra Kestenberg, had a special story to tell about earning

their gold cards. The two have played together for 10 years and have earned all their gold masterpoints as partners. They entered the Friday Gold Rush Pairs needing 10 gold points each to make Life Master. They achieved their goals in grand fashion by winning the event. The payoff was 14.7 gold points for each.

District 21 is bossWe received quite a few messages (mainly from

players in District 21, the Bay Area in California) pointing out that District 21 completely owned the Grand National Teams contests, winning three of the four flights. Additionally, D21 players won the Young 0-2500 Pairs.

When asked about the reason for D21’s success in this year’s event, District 21 Board member Roger Smith said that he wasn’t completely sure, but that “Young player programs certainly helped us in the lower flights of the GNT.”

Smth also pointed out that Debbie Rosenberg, a member of the winning Championship flight, is a teacher to many less-experienced players in the Bay Area, and one of the reasons for the large number of talented players in the district.

Ron Zambonini 1946-2017

Coutesy of the CBFRon Zambonini, Sapphire Life Master and the

former CEO of one of Canada’s greatest software firms, died Sunday evening, the victim of a lung cancer that had been discovered last year. He was 70. Ron loved golf, so perhaps it was fitting that he spent

his last day watching the final round of the British Open.

Zambonini, born in Scotland of Italian parents, was one of Canada’s most colorful and visionary tech leaders. He will be remembered throughout the

business world for his steady stewardship of the Canadian software company, Cognos. He was appointed CEO of the company in 1995, and is credited with growing the company into a global leader in the area of business intelligence software. The company was eventually acquired by IBM in 2007.

Zambonini was a passionate leader, beloved by his employees. He was a consummate showman willing to star in company skits aimed at pumping up employee energy. He famously appeared at large company gatherings, as a motorcycle gang leader, Mick Jagger, Zorro and Braveheart. One year, dressed as a rodeo champion, he jumped through a ring of fire.

At the bridge table Ron was a gentleman. He was kind, generous and funny. He was loved by his teammates and opponents alike. He was second in the Keohane North American Swiss Teams in 208 and 2013, and second in the GNT Flight B in 2003.

Zambonini is survived by his wife Gail, son Paul (Jill) and two grandchildren, Jack and Sam. A private service is being held this week in Toronto with a celebration of life Tuesday, Aug. 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the St. George’s Golf and Country Club.

Bulletin Bull:Corrections to various screw-ups

• Danny Kleinman of Los Angeles wrote to tell us that the Grand National Team history for the Flight B event that appeared in Issue 1 contains an inaccuracy about the late Bobby Goldman. The piece “credited Bobby with Kickback. In fact, however, Kickback Blackwood was invented by Jeff Rubens, who introduced it in a series on The Useful Space Principle in The Bridge World (November 1980 through April 1981). Please give credit where credit is due, if not at the current NABC, then in the ACBL Bridge Bulletin itself, where all who may have been misinformed yesterday and today may see it.”

• In the list of previous Kings/Queens of Bridge that appeared in Issue 5, we incorrectly spelled the name of New York expert Kent Mignocchi. Worse, this is the second year in a row the editors have done so. Sorry, Kent.

• Also from the King of Bridge story: 2017 winner Richard Jeng wrote to tell us that he’s actually 17 years old, not 18 as reported.

• In the Hall of Fame story that appeared in Issue 1, there were two typos. The editors managed to misspell inductee Peter Nagy’s name twice, and both misspellings were unique. Sigh.

• Another Hall of Fame miss: The caption that appeared at the bottom of page 7 misidentified the man on the left. Instead of Gene Davidson, it should have been Don Rumelhart.

• In Barry Rigal’s piece “For Want of a Horseshoe” that appeared in Issue 5, the name of declarer in column 2 is wrong. It should have been John Rengstorff.

• In Issue 2’s story on leaders in the Young LM Pairs (page 1), we incorrectly mentioned the names of the (then) fourth-place pair. Apologies to Susan Woodrow of Waterford MI and Philip Smith of Fenton MI.

• The creator of the crossword puzzle that appeared in Issue 5 was omitted: It’s Gerry Nehra.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

The Past Comes AliveDutch players Frank van Wezel and Hans van de Konijnenberg collect books, magazines and Daily

Bulletins about bridge. They especially enjoy reading Daily Bulletins from the pre-Internet era: these periodicals are a treasure trove of wonderful photographs, marvelous sketches, splendid deals and tremendous stories and anecdotes.

Van Wezel and van de Konijnenberg decided that this material should be at the disposal of all bridge players. At the same time, they want to save the history of bridge from oblivion. Therefore they launched a free website: www.bridgedailybulletins.nl

On this site you may find thousands of bulletins, both from the digital era and before. WBF, EBL and ACBL championship bulletins are posted, as well as many from miscellaneous tournaments around the world.

If you have bulletins that they are missing, please contact them. Contact details can be found on the website.

Second in the Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams: Stephen Mackay, captain Stephen Nellissen, Jim Priebe and Bob Gwirtzman.

NABC Results by Email/Text

Want to be notified when results and the Daily Bulletins from the NABC are posted online? Want to see your results in the events you played in? ACBL Live does just that.

With the ACBL Live notification system, you will receive emails and/or text messages after each session with links that go directly to the information you’re looking for. The email/text message will contain your score for the session and a link to your results. (These results will also be available on your MyResults page at MyACBL.) Players will also receive a notification to indicate when the Daily Bulletin for that day is available.

This service is automatic for members unless they have specifically opted out. To receive text messages, go to MyACBL at acbl.org and select Update My Information to enter your email address and/or cell phone number.

Also at MyACBL, visit the Privacy Settings tab to make sure you’ve selected the Subscribe setting for General Email Communication and Cell Phone Text Communication to receive these notifications.

High fiveKalin Karaivalov reported this deal from the

opening round of the Spingold Knockout Teams. Karaivalov was playing as a member of Rose Meltzer’s squad. ♠ K J 5 3 ♥ 4 ♦ A Q J 10 9 6 4 ♣ A ♠ Q 8 6 ♠ A 9 7 4 ♥ Q 9 7 6 3 ♥ J 8 2 ♦ 8 2 ♦ K 5 3 ♣ 9 5 4 ♣ 10 7 6 ♠ 10 2 ♥ A K 10 5 ♦ 7 ♣ K Q J 8 3 2

The spots are approximate. South dealt and opened a Precision 2♣ (11-15 HCP, six or more clubs), and after a 2♦ response by North (an artificial inquiry), a series of relays revealed that South was 2=4=1=6 with a maximum. North, therefore, drove the partnership to 3NT, and West lead a fifth-best ♥3.

The 3 went to the 4, 2 and 5. Declarer next took the losing diamond finesse, won the club return in dummy , and ran three more diamond tricks, pitching two clubs and a heart from the closed hand. To avoid squeezing the closed hand, Karaivalov (South) switched to a low spade from the table, playing the 10 from his hand, as West won the queen. The spade return went to dummy’s jack, East ducking. Declarer finished running his diamond winners in dummy to make his contract.

Why is this unusual? Because, as Karaivalaov pointed out, the only trick he won in his own hand was the ♥5.

Slow PlaySlow play, especially habitual slow play, is a

violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness.

In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play.

While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.

In consultation with the DIC of the tournament, the TD may require that a particular pair not play in a specified segment, not play against a specified pair or not play together as a pair. The foregoing is expected to be applied only due to egregious circumstances or to unduly repetitious offenders.

An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in Charge of the

tournament, and no further. For NABC+ KO events, the TD is charged with the responsibility to ensure that each KO match segment finishes within the allotted time. While a time monitor may be employed, the lack of a monitor in no way limits the TD’s authority to apply one or more of the remedies listed below.

The TD may choose to ignore an occasional minor late finish. The TD may remove one or more boards from a segment. The TD may award no score (when neither team is more at fault), an assigned score (when a result already exists at one table which the TD wishes to preserve) or an artificial score in IMPs. Every effort should be made to remove boards before they can be played at either table, but not having done so does not preclude removing one or more later.
