The first round of the Independence Bank Relay Madness officially kicks off today! This event, sponsored by the Independence Bank branches in Glasgow, Malta, Scobey and Poplar, features the 12 teams that are registered for the 2015 Northeast Montana Relay For Life in a competition to sell luminaria. Relay For Life participants and donors remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those battling the disease by dedicating luminaria bags. Luminaria bags are transformed and illuminated after dark at every local Relay For Life event. Each luminaria is personalized with a name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Each luminaria candle represents a person. They are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers, and so many others. Luminaria can be purchased for a $10 donation or $15 for a picture luminaria. LIVE MUSIC JULY 4TH @ 9PM

The Culprits President Obama reacted to the murders in Charleston by saying theres something we can do about mass killings in America, but a leading gun-rights leader says the president is just angling for more gun-control measures. In addition to expressing sympathies to the families and communities impacted by the murders, Obama also returned to the debate over guns. In 2013, Obama pushed hard for the U.S. Senate (then controlled by Democrats) to approve new measures, including expanded background checks, but the bipartisan bill failed to advance. Republicans now control both the House and Senate, so does this mean Obama knows he cant advance the issue over the remainder of his term? Gun Owners of America Executive Director Larry Pratt said that may not stop Obama from applying the full-court press. Pratt sees the limited time remaining in the Obama administration as a major motivating factor in a possible gun-control push. This man is hard, hard left, he said. He believes the government should control everything. Now, hes got less than two years to really snap the socialist vise on the country. I dont see him backing off. The biggest problem occurs in gun-free zones, he explained. Thats where all but one of our mass murders has occurred. So you get a dirt-bag in a gun-free zone intent on committing mass murder, and it takes awhile before a good guy with a gun can get there. According to Pratt, the only people inconvenienced by cracking down on guns are the people who would act responsibly. I think the answer is to stop kidding ourselves, he said. Criminals are not going to obey the law, so lets not make it difficult for the good guys to have guns.

A note from our local firefighters Summer is a wonderful season full of outdoor activities like fishing, barbecuing, fireworks and haying. Its also important to remember to provide for the safety of your home and family by securing defensible space around your home. Creating defensible space is essential to improve your homes chance of surviving a wildfire. Its the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surrounds it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it protects your home from catching fire either from direct flame contact or radiant heat. Defensible space is also important for the protection of the firefighters defending your home. If a wildfire is threatening your home, its our request that for your safety you immediately evacuate to a safer area (upwind of the fire, large gravel driveways, etc.). A safety zone is anywhere the fire could not reach you. There are some actions that could be taken ahead of time to assist firefighters in defending your home such as: Creating and maintaining defensible space Keep hoses and sprinklers attached to faucets around

the house so that they may be readily deployed and left on by firefighters to keep vegetation and your home cool and wet

Be cautious with the use of fireworks by avoiding dry, grassy areas.

See more at www.readyfor wildfire.org. Enjoy your summer! ~ From your local volunteer firefighters
