AS TIME GOES BY

from Barr ShackletonEarly 1942 may seem a long time ago to many Australians

Ii ving today, and to many Mel bournians it is an almost forgottenera in our history.

Local feeling on the course of the war was dis-heartening,to say the least. The Japanese Army was slowly but surely movingsouthwards toward Australia.

Singappre., had fallen and our own 8th Division was experiencingsomething of the Japanese harsh treatment of our P. O. W ~ s there. Our other A. I . F. Divisions were in Nth. Africa battling it out withRommel and his Aftika Korps. In February the war came home toAustralia with the Japanese bombing of Darwin, followed by the sneaka t tack by Japanese su bmarines insi d e Syd ney Harbour, so we were allwondering where the Japanese would strike next, and when.

Most homes in Mel bourne had hurriedly dug air-raid shel ters, and for many there was a general feeling of apprehension.

Then the rumours, which turned out to be fact! The Americanshave arrived! My brother Leo and I cycled to Port Melbourne to seethe ships which were bringing them. Station Pier and Princes Piereach had two ships each side making eight in total. The troops hadnot yet come ashore and the first of the deck cargo was being unloadedonto the wharf, and believe it or not, out there in the bay were 43American freighters waiting their turn to come in and unload.

....

Royal Park became the first big base for our welcome visi tors, and they named it Camp Pell in honour of Major Floyd J. Pell, the firstAmerican airman killed on active service in Australia. Major Pell diedhelping to defend Darwin during the first bombing raid on the city inFe bruary 1942.

The Americans lost no time in transforming their new Camp Pellinto a gigantic slice of Americana. The familiar pyramid tents, (therewere hundreds of them!) were all laid out in orderly lines and lookedvery impressive. They also had one huge canvas enclosure which tpeycalled the CAMP THEAYTER (or that's how it sounded!) And they álsocarved a few roads through the huge Royal Park and named them aftertheir f~mous generals. MacArthtir Drive was one of them and remains tothis day.

With the Americans Came their distinctive "Get up and go" quitea contrast to the unfortunate "catch word" which we had experienced inthe pre-Pearl Harbour days and was "Too little-too late". Our new alliessoon changed that - it became "Plenty - plenty quick"!

Those Yanks certainly smartened us up when it came to get tingthings moving. One incident worth relating is about some vitalearth-moving equipment which had been unloaded at Victoria Dock, butwas too wide to go through the exi t gates. rhe head man at the docksaid he would have to get the Harbour Trust Commjssioner' s permissionin wri ting before he could remove one of the gates. The story goes thatwhile he was dic ta t ing a sui table let ter to his sec retary the Americansremoved the gates, posts and all, and had the equipment through beforethe big chief came back from his office.

AS TIME GOES BY

Melbourne city streets were thronged with American troops intheir smart uniforms, an unfortunate contrast to our own Diggers, somerecently returned from the Middle East. And all V.M.V.C. members ofmy vintage will remember those U. S. Army vehicles. They seemed to beeverywhere, big ~ G. M. C. s 6x6 's, Jeeps by the hund reds, Dodge lTonCommand Cars (my favouri te! ), and would you believe, White half

tracks ,(real ones!).

Convoys of 50 to 60 GMC' c were a common sight along Sydney Rd.Brunswick as they headed north to who knows where?

I just wandered up Sydney Rd. one Saturday afternoon armedwith my camera (against the rules I must admit), knowing that I wouldn'thave long to wait before some vehicles would roll by. The accompanyingphotos show a Dodge Ambulance passing the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, (nearthe P.O.) and the G.M.C. is heading: north at a fair bat!

As an Engineering Draughtsman I had the privilege of workingf or a company which had many engineering con tracts with the U. S. Army, incl uding U. S. Army Services of Supply South West Pacific Area,(USA SOS SWP A) so I had some good work experience wi th our new allies.

And then about July 1943 as the war moved north and the threatof invasion diminished, the Americans slowly left for the battlefieldsof New Guinea, Bouganville, the Pacific Islands, Philippines, Iwo Jima,Saipan, Oki~awa, and sadly, today many lie in unmarked graves in thejungles or: these lands.

I would say that the Americans certainly left their mark on usas a nation. These young men, some barely out of High school, and likeour own young Diggers, were eager to get on wi th the task of keeping thiswonderful land of Australia free.

As the last of the Americans departed and Camp Pell becameonce again a huge vacant allotment, the memories of those days areengraved upon my mind. On July 3 1943, (a SAturday) and to be asnear as possible to America ~ s "Glorious 4th" a warm tribute to theU. S. timely help~ in our hour of need, appeared in the Mel bourne Herald.(See attached copy). Many other similar tributes appeared in theMel bourne Age and the Argus.

THERMOSTATS

FOR YOUR MI LITARY VEHICLE

BY

DENNIS R. SPENCE

£~o'~

The thermostat is one of the key coolingsystem elements. The thermostat helps to pre-vent engine overcooling and overheating, im-proves gasoline mileage and engine performance, and helps to prevent oil breakdown and sludgeformation. The thermostat maintains proper en-gine coolant temperature. Cold engines producesludge and corrosive acids. Vehicle manufactur-ers specify, in no uncertain terms, that thermo-stats must always be used, in all parts of thecountry, in all climates, in order to preventengine damage.

Periodically, the cooling system should beflushed. Check the functioning of the radiatorcap with a cooling system pressure checker.Pressure is needed to raise the boiling tempera-ture of the coolant to allow a higher operatingtemperature. When installing a new thermostat, use a new gasket. Only use permanent anti-freezewith 180 degree thermostats. The 180 degreesindicates the start-to-open temperature, as gov-erned by the temperature at the thermostat. This may differ from the dash indicator readingwhich generally shows temperature at the rear ofthe engine block.

For each application in the chart, the uppernumber is for a 160 degree thermostat, and thelower number for a 180 degree thermostat.

INTERNET INFO.....from Mike Kelly #420

Military vehicle collecting around the world has become very popular in recen years. Here in Austalia weare somewhat isolated from the may rallies and events which take place in Europe and the US. As most li-braries now have an internet connection, it is well within the reach of

most of us to have a look at the hun-

dred of military vehicle related web sites. Quite a few clubs and individuals have their own pages. Thereare also discussion forus on various topics. The followig is a brief description of some web sites which

will be of interest to most ex-military vehicle enthusiasts.

WW. MVA.ORG

This is a wortwhile strting place. It is ru by the MV A, a large club in the US. Afer lookig throughthis site, go to the MV A lis page, this wi1list may oter interestg sites that you can peruse.

WW.AWM.GOV.AU

This is the site of the Australian War MemoriaL. Lookig through the photographic da base you will fid

many interesting photographs of vehicles in action wi the Australian Ary. Free samples are available todownload.

MALE LEAF UP:

Ths site can be found on the MV A lins page. It is devoted to British/Commonwealth type vehicles.

A discussion foru allows you to ask and answer queries relating to any CMP or British vehicle.

Military Vehicle Mailing List -

Also found on the MV A lin page is the MV mailing list where you can ask about anyting to help withyour restoration. Look through the archived messages to see many tips and information. Mainly for UStye vehicles.

TEK TALK .... from Ken Morrs # 62~;;q!

Recently I had occasion to replace a tie rod end on a restoration I am worki on. Although Ibadly wom, it was not ready to fal apar; but certaiy would have faied a RWC. Tms tie rod ,iend was about six inches long with a tapered hole to accept a siar but shorter tie rod end.¡

A replacement was located interstate - the cost $164 plus freight. Tms was, of course, a NO- .~NO!I Then I remembered a review of a repai process in "Restored Cars". a§

'j

ij

l;j.~

j

A distrct garage cared out tls process - wmch involves removal of the grease nipple and a

compound is injected in and heat treated. Result - as good as new, whie you wait - and thecost? $40. Apparently tls process is used quite successfy on tractors and large earmoving equipment.

If anyone requies furter inormation regardi tls process Ken is only too pleased to help.

LATE ANZAC REPORT . . . . . . from Russell Hughes #327

The recently formed "Dad's Ary Re-enactment Group" with its Chevv Blitz & 25 pounder had a memorable two days; at theRSL Epping Opn Day on the Sunday before Anac Day, and of course, at Anac Day itself. The Group was also involved oni & 2 May at Lakes Entrnce for the opening of the Avenue of Honor. A local artst, John Brady had cared trditional Anac

figues out of the stumps of the cyress trees that had origilly been planted for the fallen and had to be removed because of

decay. It was a great day, with the RN Band and the Roulettes in attendace.

Anac Day itself was qute magncent as was expressed by many of the members at the May VMC meetig and many thmust go to the organsers, in parcular Jim Has who did such a professiona job.

Dad's Ary had a great time cartg members ofthe 2/24th (9th Div) and we can only attest to theincreasing frty of the Diggers, and that the tie

has come where we need exta help in theloading up operation. Good ladders and

footstools are vitaL.

The Epping RSL day was a beaut occasion aswell, and lie al the others, was blessed

with lovely weather.

John Sanders with local RSL member Bob Stewartat Epping
