WORTH A VI . . . .

9758 2748On a trip to SA just before Christmas, we decided to visit the SA MiltaryVehicle Museum. This Museum is conducted by the Miltary VehicleCollectors Society of SA. What an eye-opener!!!

97567285 After contacting the President Bruce Binnie, we arranged to meet oneevening at approx 7.30. Bruce arrved and after opening up, he invitedus in - car and all. The building was formerly used by a printingcompany who no longer requires so much space. The MVCSSA leasesthe building and have done a considerable amount of demolition andrebuilding inside.

Military vehicles are displayed both sides of a "road" approx 15 ft wide, most of them registered. Bruce explained that they were mainly ownedby members who used them on outings, displays, etc., and those notregistered were being restored in the Club's workshop. Some uniquevehicles on display were a Railway Chev mounted on rails, a Stuart tankand a proto-type light 1/4 ton ute built in SA in the early 1950's byFreighters (only three were made, hoping to replace the Jeep).

Another vehicle museum worth a visit while you are in SA is the NationalMotor Museum located at Birdwood. (Approx one hour north ofAdelaide). They hold a Bay to Birdwood Classic every year for vehiclesbuilt between 1945 and 1969.

When we visited, a new main display area had just been opened and wasin pristine condition. Cars of all shapes and sizes, up to a road train wereon display. There were three olive drab vehicles (two of them ex-Army)included in the show. Also included was an impressive array of vintagemotorbikes displayed in the original Museum which is a building ofhistorical significance.

VERY EAY FORD JEEPS

Some notes on distigushig featues that separate -the very early Ford Jeeps from the very early Wilys, and

some general observations on early production Jeeps compiled though the author's restoration observationsand general study. I would welcome any substantiated inormation that -could expand th -acle, howr in

the meantie I trst the followig inormation wi be of assistance to the serious restorer and historian

In the begig of Februar 1942 the Ford Motor Company, at fie dierent automotive plants across the USA,

stared production of the quarer ton 4x4 vehicle for the US Quarermaster Corps. America was at war and sheand her ales needed many more of

these smal reconnaissance ca than Wilys Overland, who had won the

contract in 1941, were going to be able to supply.

Whst the accepted design of the quarer ton 4x4-vemcleswere ofWilys origi, Ford agreed to produce to the

Wilys plans. However, Henr Ford, being a proud man and no doubt midñ of the afer wa market, determed ms vehicles were going to be distictily Ford and-set about incorpratig-the Fscrpt letter, andin some -instances, the word "Ford" on many smal pars, and the FORD logo stamped promiently in the rearpanel of his vehicles. In th latter aspect he wa only followig Wilys. These obvious dierences

did-not last

long as the Governent wated anonymous producers for securty reasons and the rear panel identicationwent by mid-' 42 and body production by-Fordceased by end i-943when the composite designedbodie-s weremade for both Ford and Wilys by Aubur Central Corp.

Neverteless, Wilys held the origial plans and an design improvement changes occured at Wilys

Overland fist, with Ford followig soon afer or simultaneously in the production years that followed.

Consequently, to the casual observer, al Jeeps looked the same and-were adored by their -wareìIsers-ror

what they were capable of doing, rather than for their production origi.

To a Jeep historian, however, the very early producton vehic1es(Vs) are among the mostinterestig-ofal

wae Jeeps because they were put together in a remarkably short tie, cut short some of the tie-consug aspects of reguar automobile constrction of the perod, and the Ford vehicleswereco-'producedwith Wilys Overland,

There were also fewer of them than durg any other production period. Durg Februar '42,thefimonth

of constrction, Ford produced approxiately 2,000 vehicles and by mid-March a fuer 5,200 had come offthe assembly lie. Not bad for plants that had unti

recentl been-producing vastly dierent vehicle types and

in much smaler numbers. To ampli Ford's achievement consider some of the ways ths happened-

Arguably the 10Ilgest job in pre-'50s automobile plant was-the castg, borig and fihig ofan enge block.

It obviously took Ford some tie to produce their own as the earliest GPW blocks cared the engie blockpar number of Wilys (lower left hand side), although

the ene nuber on the engie -b-o-wasFor,ego GPW 1234. Untouched examples of these blocks contai Ford internal components, ego Ford markedcon rods, indicatig Ford used the easier and fasterparstoproduceinWilys supplied

engie blocks. And

whist we are discussing engies, the G the P and the W on the engie number boss were individualy applied, une the combined stap on later engies. The W

stamp on these early Wilys supplied engie blocks had

reguar straight sides, as opposed to the cured sides of the W on the combined letter stamp. Confsedaleady??

And contiuig with engies, it's about tie we dispelled the myt that Ford engie numbers stared atGPW 500. They staed at GPW 001. One of our own VMC members owns GPW 209. GPW 327 is inCalorIa, whist GPW 004 was found several years ago and was featued in Ary Motors.

The ilustrations of

the-engie and chassis (GPW 500), as shown in the manual are there only as a reference to indicate wherethese numbers can be found.

The single most distigushig featue about these early Fords (up to Serial No GPW 9000 approx.) was their

use of the Wilys designed chassis supplied by the A. O. Smith Company with its distictive tubular front crossmember. As they did on their own chassis later*, the Ford serial numer was stamped rearard of

the left

hand front shocker mount. Occasionaly numbers have been noted stamped on the left hand engie mount asan alternate position. These chassis did not have any other distigushig Ford sympols as ca be seen on the

Ford made chassis where al cross members and the shocker mounts are F marked.

IlNOW YOUB JEEP (Cont'd)

* From some tie in early Apri '42 Ford stared producton of their own chassis with its characteristic invertedU chanel front cross member.

And to set the chassis up, it is liely that these VEs were mounted on Wilys style sprigs with the Wilys styleenclosed sprig clips as ilustrated in the intial Ford TM 10 1349 ofJan 30th 1942. Sprigs were supplied byMather at ths tie to both Wilys and Ford.

A word of caution. . . . It should be noted, however, that there was common usage ofWilys supplied photosin each of the manufactuers manuals and ths could be an instance where Ford used a Wilys photo to conveyan impression even though the Ford sprigs were dierent. Interestigly, the Ford Pars List, Change 1 ofApnl '42 lists 8 sprig clip bolts and nuts for each par affront and rear sprigs, thus indicatig the Ford stylesprigs with their U shaped clps were in use by then, only two months afer production stared. A year later

the Ford manual TM 10 1349, Change 2 of Apnl43 notes the sprig manufactuer as Ford, so presumably for

reasons of cost or supply, Mather was no longer a sprig supplier to Ford.

In Februar '42 the solid ri that had been used up to ths tie on the slat gre Wilys and earlier by the

proto-tyes were changed to the spli ri (combat ri) and used thoughout the remaider of the wa by both

manufactuers. As Ford production stared in Februar, Ford used the combat ri only and ths use by thefist GPW to come off the production lie is shown in the publication "The American Ford" byLoren D Sorensen The intial Ford TM 10 1349 of ran 30th '42 refers to the wheels as "combat ris" fuer

reinorcing the sale usage of ths tye of wheel by Ford. The wheel manufactuer was Kelsey Hayes.

The outer end of the rear axes that bolt to the hub are distictve as well. These were scaloped shaped onboth the early vehicles rather than the later round style and the Ford a.'Ces have a promient scrpt F on theface.

Just to complete the -underside of the vehicles there is a very rare chassis bracket on al the VEs. Ths is thehydraulc lie outrgger bracket riveted to the left chassis rail just in front ofMG cross-member. Ths is wherethe flexible tube mounts and rus across to a "T" junction on the top of the left axe housing tube, not to the topof the diff centre housing. Because the flexible hose got caught up in bushes, etc, both companies lengtenedand re-routed the metal hydraulc lies though the MG cross-member and from there byilexible tube to thetop of di centre. Also, many of the VE chassis were retrofitted for the new lies.

Ths wi give the restorer who has his Jeep in pars or is curous as to its place in the production programeand wats to crawl underside to check it out, a short gude to its history. Beware however, the Jeep that hasbeen though a rebuid, as ths vehicle can be the most confsing of al. Also, I have not descrbed thedierences between the dierential housings which occured maiy due to strengtenig requements asreports came in from the field as the wa progressed, maiy because the descriptions can get qute lengtyand it's easier to draw the changes for anyone that wants to contact me.

1942 FORD JEE~ Rareby Joel Brod

Omaha, Nebraska

I drag my tired boy into work at 0530 hr, 11 September 1993,

cursing the fates that had seen me pulled frm my bed at this un-Godly hour. Thngs picked up quicky though, as I discovere inthe Antique and Classic Car section of the newspaper the

notation; "1942 Ford Jeep, Rae, Lots of New Par." Tal about an eyeopener! I decided that 9:00 a.m. was an acceptable time to call, needlessto say, the thre hour of uncertinty between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

were sheer hell. The phrase "lots of new parts" had me worred forobvious reasons and the word "raren scared me simply because Ifigued, "Tis guy thinks he has a real gem and is going to want an arand a leg for it."

Afr much pacing and lookig at my watc I finally staed calig

'at 8:30 am. I finally contacted him around 10:30 a.m. and made anappointment to se the Jeep aftr he got off work at 5:00 p.m.

Now, the facts of the mattr were that as an impoverished college

student stil living at home, and already suffering a severe case of"Olive Drab Syndrome," I could not aford it and had nowhere left to putit. But as we al know frm Oliver Stone's movies, if the facts do notsupport the conclusion you intend to reach, disregard the facts. Ialready own a 194 GPW, a 1942 Slat Gnlle Wilys and a 1941 i 1/2 tonChevy and .can't really aford them either but I am slowly restoring

them. Never mind that, "Damn the tòrpdoes,fuU speed ahead!"Fien minutes later I arrved at the guy's house. I found hi at

the back tinkerig on a realy nice 1936 Chevy delivery truck, which, by

the way, is for sale. Next to it sat a 1942 scpt bodied Ford GPW,sporting orange mag. wheels, rollbar, green, black, brown, and grayhand painted camouflage. It sort of looked lie a duc-hunting dunebugg. Its condition was poor but not hopeless, the price would decide

the issue. I asked, he answered and I, try not to giggle like a school

gil, agreed to the price he himself had chosen. It was, to say the least, fai, to say the most, robbery. I gleefully confess that I am guty.

I bega looking her over more closely and ths tie examned thedata plates on the glove compartment door. It appeared tht a miste

had been made when the serial number was stape at the factory. Iwrte down the serial number and the Date of Delivery, 4-10-2, gavethe gent a down payment, and trundled off home to check the serialnumber list in "All American Wonder VoL. I." My feeble hopes of theserial number being correc were dashed by a mere moment's researh. The DoD place the serial number in the 15/16,000 ran, much higherthan the data tag number. Aw, heck! But, stil a faint glimmer of hope,in that I knew that some early Fords were on Wilys frmes (as this onewa). I had briefly checked behind the left shock absorber mount, but itwas gett dark, not to mention the four coats of gre and seven coatsof pait that covered the entire Jeep. Unfortunately I wasn't able to see

much. The mystery would have to rest until tomorrw.Noon, Sundal" saw me back at the site or my find. I popped the left

fender off and began scraping. It didn't take long to determe tht it

was, at least, a GPW frme. Afr much furous scraping, the debatewas settled. The numbers matched The data ta number was correctafr all, and, indeed the owner was correc when, as he pulled the ta

of of her the night before, he introduced me to her, saying; "Here she is,

Old Number Four." That's right guys GPW#4. No doubt about it.

I had honestly told him then that Ithought the number was a mistake beuseif it reay was number four it would haveread XX4 or 0000 or somethi like thatbut, nope, there it is, al by it's lonesome, inthe middle of the serial number strp; L 4 1.The frame number is a mess thoug. The"G" is overstamped three times and ther

are ghost Ps and W's next to the real ones.

JNo defite answer on the late delivery

date. Either it faied final inspection or the

Ford Engine Room Systm is to blame, orboth. It's tough to say.

As for-condition, well, let's saydisassembly will be no problem. She's prettydevoid of accessories. The running gear is allthere, as is the transmission and trnsfercase. The engine is supposed to be on theway, but I haven't seen it yet. The fenders, hoo, and gre ar there, but are in verybad condition. The body could be bettr but

it also could be a lot worse. They were gointo put an M151 engie and trayin it, if itdidn't sell. God news: I got to it before theytorched the motor mounts. Bad news. Theyhad aleady torched the recessed par of thefirewall and the trsmssion dome with aArkasa Sped Wrench.

Keep 'em roll'.

CHRYSLER NATIONAL RALLY - WOLLONGONG 1998from Don Bailey

Wollongong here we come!l!

I met travellg compamons Shiley & John Plowman at the Heidelberg Repat at 7.00 am on Friday25 September for a prompt depare. Out the back way, Greensboroug, Yarambat, Doreen,Whttesea, top up with fuel at Wandong and on to the Hume Higway. Morng tea just pastBenala

Mak good but slow tie, 45 mph, we stopped for lunch at the Cbitem wayside stop where wewere joined by fellow Dodge enthusiast Glen Stones from Ruthergen. Glen has a stable of Dodgemitai vehicles so it wa good to catch up and compare notes on Weapons Carers.

Next stop was for fuel at Nort Albur then Holbrook for a coffee break and then on to Gundaai.Stadi in the mai street afer havi a bit of a look for other Chrco members, tI to decidewhere to stay, the old faith mobile rigs and yes, they were in a motel in Yass. Yes, they had room

for some more, so we decided to mae for Yas, another hour and a hal travell. It wa nice to

arve at the Motel and have a freshen up afer a twlve hour day on the road.

It wa decided to have dier at the Yas Soldiers Club whch wa most enjoyable. Afer a briefencounter with the pokies, it wa decided that bed wa a good place to be so we headed back to theMotel.

Nex morn, another nice suny day we decided to head off before the others as they travelled

faster than us. They pasd us at Goulbur and then waited at the tu-off to Moss Vale for us tocatch up. One of the ladies got game and decided to ride with me in the Weapons Carer into MossVale. Morn tea wa ha in a hot brad kitchen. . Great pies!!! Lovely tup display in the maistreet gardens aId the Southem Higd steam trai wa also in action. Our vehicles parked inthe street created a lot of interst from passers by.

We set off on the last 100 ks to W ollongong via the Macquare Pass. Watcbi the rear vision miorI see John stopping on the roadside, so we al stop, tu arund and head back to see what theproblem is, only to fid out that he had stopped to pick up my hatll, which I wa not using, andobviously had not stowed securely in the Dodge.

Off agai, and the countrside looki an absolute pictue, lush and very green. We came to the top

of the Macquarepass, and with some outstadig views to the coas, we proceed to wid our waydown the pass. The road was good and faily widy for a sta and then became very narow andextemely widy with some real beaut haiin bends. Brakes were worki well, and travellgslowly, we al made it down saely. On into Albion Park, then up the hiway to Wollongong. Afer afew wrong tus we fialy made it to raly headquarers the Sur Leisue Resort.

Sunday wa a no drve day for me as the Motel wa with eas wa distce of ray HQ. Regis-

ter afer 10.00 am, catch up with other arvals, renew old frendshps, check out ray kit - badgeand goodies, and generaly, a relaX day. Raly HQ wa the venue for the Welcome Barbeque, in-troduction to Raly Commttee and usual anouncements.

Monday morn assembly in caark saw everyone tig to match up bolts and nuts which were in

the raly packs. Ths caused lots and lots oflaughter. Nuts and bolts of al sizs made for a lot ofmi, tI to match them up. Then it was off to do a bit of sitseeing, beaches, lakes, BuddistTemple (huge) and on to the Ilawaa Motorig Museum for morn tea Great Museum, motorbikes, car and al sort of early motori history.

Leavig the Museum it wa off to the Mita Reserve Coastgard Lookout for a great view up anddown the coast, then on to Shell Harbour Sur Club for a wal on the beach. A few took a paddlebut the water wa prett cold. Off ag, past the steel works, though the shoppig centre and

back to our lunch stop at the Flagsta Point Lookout where we certy fied the caark tooverfowi with Chrsler products. The afemoon was free to do our own th.

WOLLONGONG TRIP ( Cont'd)

Tuesday saw us assemble in the carark agai, most of us sti tig to match up nuts and bolts.

I fialy matched up with Bil Rewiti, put it away for saety, then couldn't fid it!! Then it was off

to

Nowra Naval Avaiation Museum, a 50 km ru down the Prces Hiway and along the coast.Countrside realy looked terrc, great dai countr. A faily war day wmch caused someoverheatig and vapoursi problems in a few cars.

The Naval Base provided an excellent morng tea and araned a fly past of New Zealand Ai Forcejets. There were several helicopters doing some trai as well. The Museum is cramed fu ofaicraf and equipment from the early days of the base to curent ties. I was one of the last to leavewith my passenger and we made it to the Nowra RSL for a great smorgasboard lunch. Afer a verylooong lunch, the rest of the afernoon was to do your own th.

Wednesday was an 8.00 am depare for a day trp to the Blue Mountais. Doing the real tourst bitwe went to the Three Sisters Lookout, took plenty of photos, then on to the scenic raway. A fewnervous staers when the steepness of the rais was sighted. A short wa to the river gorge wasgood for the waistle!! I missed out on a trp in the cable car, next tie.

Thursday dawned another nice day, sti in shorts even in the Dodge. To-day we are off to the Fitzoy

Fals via the southern tablelands. Long clib up Mt Keir wmch was nice steady goin. Not assteep as Macquare or Bul Pases. Once up the top it was a nice drve to Mittong for morng teaat Lake Alexander. On to Bowral by-pass, Mos Vale and then arved at lunch stop; Fitzoy Fals

Dam. Afer lunch, some of us decided to go back to Bowral to view the Bradman Museum.

On arving at the Museum and looki at the ground and pavilon, it was just lie a postcard.Eve:rg looked very cricket and perfect suroundigs. We spent a most interesti couple ofhours tak it al-in. Certaiy wort a look if you ar going that way in futue. Back on the road

and headig for another trp down the Macquare Pass. Check out a couple of antique shops inRobertson.

Friday and another fie day for our ru to Berr via the Kiama Blowhole. On the way, some great

views. Very steep clib up to Saddleback Mountai Lookout. Terrc views over the coastal countrand even more spectacular from the lookout. Steady descent down to Kiama, more great views ofcoast and fialy into Kiama for morn tea stop.

Afer a brief stop, it wa off to mstorical town of Berr. Plenty of parkig at the show grounds where

we-ha-aveinrmative tal on the history of the ara by loca mstorian Mar. We were then let

loose on the tOWnsmp for lunch and some shopping. The afernoon was free to do your own thand make your way bak to the 'Gong. Friy eveni we went to the Itaan Club for another gratmeal. Agai, a good number of ralyists enjoyig the food and the pokies.

Saturday, another fie day for display day. Lots of last-miute clean and polish activity

around the MoteL. Cars sent off from the Waves car park in age order to Lang Park, where we were allied up for what was a great display of Chrsler products ra from a 1916 Dodge, though to thelatest Viper - a realy great display.

The day also wared up considerably and had us al looki for cool drs and shady trees. Our

early sta make it a long, hot day. My frend Ruth arved, so it wa good to have a navigator for the

rest of the trp. Back to the Motel for a rest, shower, chane of clothes, etc, and on to the buses for a

trp to Shoalaven RSL for the Presentation Diner. Lots oftropmes, with some comig Victoria'sway. Everyone seemed to have a good night.

Sunday, and yet another fie day for our last ru. Stawell Park was our destiation, via the scenic

route along the south coast beaches. Another perfect day for drvin along the coast - his on one

side, ocean on the other. On arvin at Stawell Park, fidi a shady spot to park, we waed to thebeach. Lots of people in the water, wal on the beach or just relax and watchig the varoustyes of hang glders flyi around and landi on the beach and park. Must be an exharatigexperience.

WOLLONGONG TRIP ( Cont'd)

Dodge was requested to collect lunches from the local CW A Hal and deliver them for distrbution. We were then invaded by thee very nice 65, 66 Mustas. Bit out of place amongst theChrslers. About 3,00 pm we decided to head back to the Motel and along the way, pick up abox of '54 Dodge bits and pieces which a chap had kidly offered us on disply day for free.

Sunday eveni's farewell barbeque was held at Ral HQ. A great meal, good company, lots oflaughs, some offcial speeches, farewells to old and new frends, concluded a great 8th NationalRaly.

Monday morng, another fie day and some farewells to frends stayi in the MoteL. It wa anearly star (7.15 am) for home. Afer bein in shorts al week it was back into jeans and choosingthe easer, sltly longer haul out ofWollongong, up Mt Keira, to the Hume Highway, head toAlbur for an over-night stop.

Headi down the highway we caught up with Roger and famy on the side of the road withover-heatig problems which had dogged Roger al week. As two other vehicles were styiwith Roger, I decided to push on as they travelled faster th I did. We made it to Albur about4.30 pm and checked in, expecti the other to be close behid. Unfortately, Roger's prob-lems had got worse, forcing hi to stay in Goulbum; the other two vehicles arved at the Motel

about 9.00 pm.

Rai over-nit and overcast the next day saw the jumpers and coats out. Between W odongaand Wanaratt the widscreen wipers were on for the fist tie since leavin home. A fewshowers, some heavy, wa our welcome back to Victoria Lunch break at Benala and weatherfieagai; it was next stop home. Once over Prett Saly the weather tued di agai andrealy staed to blow and rai unti we got to the Ford factory where it fied up and was then fie

the rest of the way home to Doncaster.

CONCLUSION: Great raly, lots oflaughs, no trck problems. 1,570 mies covered, 6 litres ofoil, heaps of petrol. I'll be at the next raly!!

PS - Yes, the old gil has a bumt out valve. No wonder she wa a bit slow on the his!!
