HM CERBERUS - 24 OCTOBER

After formg up at the Thompsons Road

meeting place, the convoy left at approx 8.45for HMA Cerberus.

We had a good ru down to the base and on arval wewere met by our appointed escort and were diected tothe parade ground in front of the CommuncationsSchool buidig where we proceeded to set up ourcommand tent and radio gear. The vehicles were thenplaced around the parade ground for a static diplay.

Afer the diplay was in place we were invited to take aride in the Navy's $M 1.2 tw cat boat. The bay(Westernport) was qute choppy but the boat handled itvery well, except for a few waves washig over thestern and catching a couple of members by surrie.No-one was seasick and everyone enjoyed the ride.

The Navy personnel could not have been morecoureous or helpfu, a credit to the servce. About.0; noon we waled down to the Junior Offcers Mess for

lunch - roast tukey and beef, salads, tea, coffee and softdrks. Top marks to the chefs.

The Roulettes flew over afer lunch and gave their usual

fist-class diplay. (Never tire of watchig them).

The OC presented Lionel with a framed certifcate ofappreciation thang us for our paricipation. About3.30 we broke camp and left the base with assuranceswe would be back next year.

T~n" ~IE"~~T 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0FIREWORKS FAIR - SATURDAY 13 NOVEMBER

The Fireworks Fair was planned to be a quiet outing for the Jeep to support my daughter's school. Asusual, there were about 20-30 vintage cars on display. This year was diferent because i was asked totr and get more vehicles due to the Bendigo Swap Meet being on. The Geelong Miltary Re-enactmentGroup filled the extr spaces.

i arrived at the school at 3.15 pm, and by 4.00 pm the Army had started to arrive - the first being a FordBlitz towing a 25 pounder gun. Ten minutes later a Chev Blitz belonging to the President of the GMRG,towing a trailer with a Bren Gun Carrier, followed by a Chev Desert trck arrived.

We unhitched the 25 pounder and set that in position near the Ford Blitz and my Jeep. Next the Bren GunCarrier was unloaded and set up with the Chev Blitz. The Chev Desert truck was being set up with a ma-chine gun in the back and information boards and photos of past re-enactments were placed all aroundthe display.

Once set up, everyone relaxed, talked to the public, looked at other cars and inspected the variousstalls. After a great turnout by the public we started packing up just before dark and then watched thefireworks.

Thank you all who attended and went to a lot of trouble to bring the 25 pounder and the Bren Gun Carrierfrom as far away as Winchelsea and Gheringhap. Thank you all for a great display and a great night.

END OF AN ERA (ALOST)from Ken Morr #62

Recently I was involved in an operation code named "Operation Deploy" where some 30 or so, mayWW, vehicles were moved from the Pakenham Milta Vehicle Museum to a new location on the NSWborder, as the owners, Mar and Ian Ledwidge are sellg the propert at Pakenham.

Whst my role was may as an observer (artis saw to that), the operation was completed in a week. With Ian's son Chrs and VMC member Luke Sydes (both of

whom ar my grdsons) operatig the .vehicles, they were readied for trsport. Most were staed up and drven, although some neededigntion points cleaned as some had corroded afer approxitely i i year in storae. A Dodge

Weapons Caer staed as though it had been runng a few hour previously, unusual in my Dodgeexperiences.

Ian has his own low loader with raps and another conventional semi-trer was used, loadig frm are-formed pile of ear conveniently left by loca Shie roadworks and re-arged by a loca frnt endloader operator. A Ford monkey face Blitz was used to load the non-goers. As well as vehicles therewere severa glass showcases and much mitaa to be moved. Members wi be glad to know that thscollection is not to be broken up or sold, but wi be kept as a complete collection.

It was with some twges of nostagia that I watched these vehicles leave, as I often spent the odd houror two admg ths collection. Although not admstrtively or fiancialy involved in the Museum'soperation, I assisted in the buildig of the premises and helped with constrctive (I hope) advice whenrequested.

Afer so much promise, the display was not a fiancial success. The expcted bus loads of tourists didnot arve, although those that did visit were most impressed with the display as attested to by thevisitors' book. Over the years some thousand dollars of dame was done to the vehicles, with theftand may vandal attacks. The ma taets being widscreens and headlghts; even the Ford ITtrck not escaping.

As to the future of the collection, no vehicles are for sale and I can only conclude by sayig "Watch thsspace" .

SAZ 618by Tadeusz BerestekiBolestawiec, Poland

Polish soldier repairing an automobile circa 1950-54

HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE

In the former USSR before WWIL, the miltaryexperimented with and examined new prototype oflight vehicles for the Army. Prototpe of Arm GAZvehicles were; the R-1 base on the GAZ chassis;

GAZ M-1, GAZ-TK; GAZ-21 and GAZ-61.

The NA TI prototype 'AR' was designed by thegovernment. In Moscw's KIM state run factory anew light weight prototype was designed on the KIM-1chassis which utilzed rear axle drive.

After the war had beun Witalij A Gracziew, the chiefdesign engineer in the GAZ Works ~orkowsij,Awtomobilnyj, lawo, the automobile factory in Gorki)designed in the relatively short period of time - 6 to 8weks, the GAZ 64. It was designed on the sameconcept as the Bantam BRC40 and Wilys MA, 4X4XL ton Jeep. The vehicle was of simple construction

and easy to manufacture. Prouction started in thefall of 1941.

The GAZ 64 design concept was base on numeroussub assmblies currently in production for otherautomobiles. Totally new was the bo, frame, frontsuspension, springs and radiator. The engine camefrom the GAZ MM truck which was manufacturedunder a Ford AA license. The steering gear, fueltank, dashboard, gearbx were from the GAZ AA.The front and rear rigid driving axles came from theGAZ 61 4X4 sedan which was use for transportationby high ranking miltary offcers.

The GAZ 64 had an open type boy. It was technologicallyvery simple in construction with side panel cut-outs insteadof doors, as with Jeep vehicles. This cut out could becovered by canvas curtains like the Wilys MA Jeep.Gracziew designed the bo to minimize steel consumptionwhich was in short supply during the war. Body parts weremade almost totally of flat metal plates. The bo panelswere manufactured by bending the steel sheets or weldingand twsting them without using complicaed dies. Thecanvas top mounted on a folding frame. The windshieldfolded down on the hoo, thus helping to camouflage thevehicle and reduce the overall dimensions of the car. These design concepts not only reduce production timeand cost, but also simplified spare parts supply. The GAZ64 served as a means of transportation for anti-tank guns, mortars and trailers as well as for persnnel.

At the end of 1942 the vehicle was modified. Track widthwas increase from 1250 mm (49.2") to 144 mm (56.9").Prior to this modificaion it had a tendency to roll over.Fenders appered where previously only a cut-out in thebo was provided for the wheels. The width of the boyremained unchanged. The vehicle was designated theGAZ 67.

As a result of a send modification in 194, the vehiclewas designated ås the GAZ 67B. The three row typeradiator was changed to a six row one with flat tube as wellas a new pres air intake instead of the welded flat barsas initially utilzed on the early Wilys Jeeps. Some of theparts were replace with more modem ones, which camefrom the GAZ 51 and M20. This included such items asthe fuel filter, carburetor and coiL. The wheel base wasalso increase to provide for a better weight distributionof the vehicle on its axles and to reduce both the front andrear overhang of the bo. This version of vehicle was

manufactured until 1953. During the war 5,000 were

produce. Including all models, a total production of62,843 GAZ vehicles were produce.

Off road type tires were utilzed and the vehicle performedvery well on soaked, muddy and snowy roads. In commonusage in the Soviet Army this little work hors bemeaffecionately known as 'Gazik', 'Kozlik' or 'Bobik' (the 'B'coming from the model 67B).

A small number of vehicles were covered with a lightwoen roof and designated as the GAZ 67-420. TheGAZ 67B was painted with dark green oil base paint.Light twseed armored vehicles (BA 64 and BA 64B),

were built during the war on the GAZ 64 and 67 chassis. An amphibious version (similar to the Ford GPA) was builtand designated MAV (GAZ 46).

All thes vehicles were well praise on the war front and

played an important role in miltary operaions. For thisreason the German Air Force often bombe the GorkiAutomobile factory.

Particularly severe bombing raids ocurred in 1943. OnJuly 24th and 25th 1943, the German Air Force made 25 airraids on the factory. This devastation and heavy loss didnot slow production to any significant extent. Workers keptdoing their jobs under roofles assmbly buildings, withoutwindows, using only the light of day for 18 to 19 hour shifts.
