Dear Friends,

If you look at the sanctuary this weekend, you’ll notice a new piece of furniture on the wall near the baptismal font. Our new ambry was installed this past week! The ambry is the “house” for the sacred oils: the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of the Catechumens

and the Sacred Chrism. These holy oils are used for a variety of purposes, including the Sacra-ments and other liturgical rites. They are formally presented to the parish after they are received by the pastor or designate at the Mass of Chrism, celebrated during holy week. They should enjoy a special place in the church. My heartfelt thanks to Paul Lang for his beautiful work and craftsman-ship! We’re in the home stretch of completing the final pieces for the restoration project. The next big project will be the niche that will house the Book of the Dead in the west transept. When you have a moment, please stop by the baptismal font and check out the ambry.

In a pastoral letter to his priests this past week, Bishop Morlino wrote a beautiful reflection on the presence of evil in the world. It seems that evil is rearing its ugly head no matter where we turn. It does not discriminate - the evil one tries to tempt everyone! It’s how we respond to those invitations of the evil one, friends. For those who are well fortified in the spiritual life, it can be easier to thwart the efforts of the evil one than for one who has no spiritual life at all. One of the best ways we can confront the pres-ence of evil is to invoke the intercession of the holy saints - namely, that of St. Michael, whom God chose as the pro-tector and defender against the evil one. During weekday Mass, we already pray the Prayer to St. Michael as an act of thanksgiving after Mass. At the bishop’s request, we will also begin praying the prayer at weekend Masses. It will conclude the praying of the General Intercessions. After my concluding prayer, I’ll invite you to turn to page 802 in the seasonal missalette to pray the prayer. I’m asking everyone to use the prayer in the missalette - even if you already know it. The prayer is worded a bit differ-ently, and praying it from the missalette will ensure that everyone is praying the same words. As we pray the pray-er, let us unite together in our prayer against the evil one, and for those who lie in the evil one’s grip. One of the graces of prayer is that it can bring about God’s goodness, and we need that in our world now more than ever.

For awhile now, the Holy Father has been strongly promoting the use of the Entrance and Communion Anti-

phons during holy Mass. He reiterated their importance as we enter into Advent and prepare for Christ’s coming. We use the antiphons regularly at weekday Masses, and be-ginning this weekend, we will begin to utilize them at weekend Masses as well. The antiphons will be chanted before the gathering hymn, and after the celebrant (and the deacon, when present) have received Holy Commun-ion. The antiphons are scripturally based, and help us enter more deeply into the Eucharistic celebration. My prayer is that their addition will help us focus more on where Christ is leading us as we enter into the Mass.

This weekend marks the beginning of a new litur-gical year, and the beginning of our Advent journey to Christmas joy. We have two seasons of “journey” - Ad-vent and Lent. Sometimes, it’s fun to go on a journey with no real plan or destination, but these journeys are differ-ent, friends. These are times in which the Lord is inviting us in a very special way to walk with Him and to allow Him to lead us more deeply into the loving relationship we share with Him and with His Church. As our Advent jour-ney begins, take some time in the coming days to ask Je-sus, “Where, Lord, do you want Me to go? How can I grow in my love for You, Your people and Your Church?”

This journey is a particularly difficult one because its dura-tion is short this year - we have three weeks and about eight hours of Advent! There are also many worldly dis-tractions that seem to make these days far more hectic and stressful. The temptation is to be filled with busyness, but the Lord invites us to have a quiet, contemplative spirit and to enter these days with a great desire to grow. To help you on your journey, we have some Advent devotion-al books from Magnificat that are located beneath the cru-cifix in the west transept. Please take a complimentary copy with you as you leave Mass.

As you can see, we had a great response to the Little Drummer Boy tree! On behalf of our conference of St. Vincent de Paul and myself, thank you for your gener-ous hearts. These gifts not only bring joy to the child re-ceiving them, but they should also bring joy to our own hearts in knowing that we ministered to Christ Himself.

This week, we will celebrate the solemnity of our Blessed Mother’s Immaculate Conception. We’ll follow our usual holy day schedule. The vigil Mass will be cele-brated on Thursday, December 7th at 6:30pm. Masses on December 8th will be celebrated at 8:30am and 12:10pm.

May we truly find the gift of God’s joy in this Ad-vent journey so that we can carry it with us to Christmas and throughout the coming year.

Save the date: On Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 9:15am (immediately following the 8:30am Mass) in the lower level of the church, St. Bernard Pastoral Minis-try and the Women of St. Bernard will welcome a speaker from Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) to teach us about the warning signs of do-mestic abuse. We will look at how families are im-pacted—children especially. We will discuss ways that our parish can reach out to those affected by do-mestic abuse.

In this season of giving, please bring an item for our gift basket that will be given to the speaker to be handed out to those in need in their shelters. Some items on their wish list include body wash, plastic baby bottles, sippy cups, baby lotion, socks (all sizes), hair conditioner or kids scis-sors.

Saying Yes to God, Discovering and Re-sponding to God’s Will for Me by Albert Haase, OFM, scholar of Christian spiritu-ality and spiritual mentor to hundreds. Fr. Haase is known for offering clear, practi-

cal spiritual advice.

Discerning God’s will is an ongoing process—not a static one-time decision! What is God asking of me? How do I know if this is really of God and not simply my imagination? These are great questions to ask during Advent and Christmas as we enter a new year of our lives.

Each session includes a 30 minute DVD presentation and a chapter from his book. We will have time for prayer, discussion and sharing as we unpack what Fr. Haase has to say about unlocking the benefits of the ancient practice of discernment.
