I. CONVOY FOR KIDS SUNDAY 20th FEBRUARY 2005

I was going to write a trip report about this event until I received this letter from Jan Maher - Maryn askingmyself to convey it to all our members, all I would like to say is a personal thanyou to the members thatattended and I look forward to the next CONVOY FOR KIS in Februar 2006. David Marsh. vmvc #346

To all the Members of the VMVC,Convoy For kids Inc would like to sincerelythan one and all for the great display yourMembers put on for us at Calder Park Racewayon Sunday 20th Feb 2005. Your support is sovery much appreciated. The channel 9, 7 and 3 iplus the other media I spoke to there on theday, were very impressed with the display ofyour vehicles and said it was great that therewas such a great range of other vehicles ondisplay. A couple of the reporters thoughtConvoy For Kids was only for Trucks (I didexplain that a 'Convoy' means ANY type ofvehicles fomung one 'Convoy'). I do sincerelyapologise, on behalf of the CFK Inc commttee, that the person organising where a few of yourvehicles were going to be placed, was put intoanother position on short notice and forgot tomake the new person on the gates aware of that.

(We simply don't have enough reliableVolunteers for the day). Some of your vehicleswere supposed to be placed inside the mainarena with the others along the other side of theroad. Also I would like to most sincerely givevery special thans to David, Linda andMelinda Marsh for cOITng to the rescue (on a'ITnutes' notice) to help us with our tee-shirtproblem. When we opened our 40 footcontainer at Calder Park (we store all our stockthere), unbeknown to us, the people at CalderPark had moved 4 palletts of soft drink cansfrom the shed into our container. The 4 palletshad exploded in the heat and the tee-shirts, softtoys, boxes of childrens games plus everyngelse was either damp, mouldy or totally ruinedand unusuable. The Marsh faIly kindly

offered to help and took all the clothing for usand washed, dried, sorted and folded them all, even putting them into sizes for us to be able toselL. They even organised a laundramat todonate the washing and drying costs for us.They are absolute treasures. We would havehad no stock to sell on the day if it wasn't fortheir help. So, to the Marsh faIly - again -THAK YOU SO VERY-VERY MUCH. Itwas also great to see your members allow thefamous "KISSTROYER" band to have photostaken with your vehicles.

Page 10: The Victorian Military Vehicle Corps Inc. Newsletter 2005/VMVC Apr 2005.pdf · PEAK CAP's $8.00each. ( round club logo) 1 x LEFl HA DRIV STICKER $10.00 ( 3 inch) THE VICTORI CLUB

The KISS TROYER band are famly people anda couple have children (obviously they don't

normally look like that and all actually arebusiness men with short hair). The whole band(including the sound people) spent ALL dayand night on Saturday at Calder Park setting upthe main stage themselves to help save usmoney.

Tommy, Joan and Kole "The GOGGOMOBILEFAMILY" were very happy to be able tohave photos taken with some of yourvehicles. They wish to send their sincerethans to your whole group. Than youagain for allowing this to happen. We doappreciate it so very much. When timepermts, I shall organise to set up your newweb site which, as you are aware, one ofmy personal companies are donating toyour great group of wonderfl people. Iwil also train your webmaster Mike Kellyand David Marsh on how to edit the website, as they wil need to be able to do somework on the site themselves because I maynot always have time or be well enough tokeep it updated. Than You from all atConvoy For Kids Inc Executive andordinar Commttee members. We look

forward to the VMVC's involvement and support at any time. You are all very Special and caring People.Kindest Regards, Jan Maher-Maryn (Patron - International Ambassador Secretary)Web: www.convoyforkids.org

ITHE GREAT AIR RALLY SATURDAY 26th FEBRUARY 2005.

Louis Vella and I left Drysdale together and arved at Baron Heads Airport at 10.00 am and met up with BobWilkens in his Jeep and Trailer and Peter MacMilan in his Jeep. Half an hour later, Gordon Edwards arved inhis Jeep. (a last nnnute decision.) The next 2 hours was spent meeting offcials and constantly being told thatthe Ultralights are late. Our Jeeps were all ready with the Follow Me signs on the back and one with a trailer tocollect luggage from the Air Cadets HQ's. Suddenly it was 12.00, the Ultralights stared ariving, no time forlunch as was planned and 5 had landed and needed to be escorted off the tarac. Now quietness set in for thenext 2 HRS, plenty of time for lunch and a look over around the hangars. 2.00 pm arved and a briefing withdifferent Air Marshalls and a practice run using varous tactics. Battle Stations, it now became busy with LightAircraft constantly landing and banng up. A new plan was quickly worked out, putting Gordon to the side, escorting planes that had refuelled tot he large paddock, that was the parking lot, one Jeep just off the runway, waiting for approaching aircraft and the other to the far side, ready to take its position. In the meantime Bobwas carng the luggage that was tagged by the Air Cadets to the main hangar, ready to go on the bus. Byapproximately 4.30pm we had escorted 35 Aircraft and 5 Ultralights and we were now finished. At all times ourAi Marshalls had radio contact with the pilots which made things run smootWy. My support crew had nowdisbanded and headed for home, Gordon for Melbourne and Louie on a weeks R & R with famly in Adelaide.Bob picked up the last load of luggage and we both then depared

Thans to the following:My Jeep and Trailer (Tarac Taxi)Bob Wilkens - Jeep & Trailer (Airport Avenger)Louis Vella - Jeep (Baron Heads Bandit)

Gordon Edwards - Jeep (Runway Raider)Peter MacMilan - Jeep, but unfortunately had to leave.Michael Kaukas for planning to come but had to pull out.

Than You AlL.Fran Vella

lJ ~li fW..1i ~li rm1J ~When the Japanese Imperial forces attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, "aday that wil live in infamy," I was a greenhorn youth of 17, logging in the woodsin eastern Oregon. My life and destiny, as well as that of thousands of otherAmericans, were changed forever at that crucial, infamous hour. 2,403 sailors,Marnes and civilians were killed, 1,178 wounded. As the news of the sneak attackfiltered through our disbelief and became a reality, many of us immediately quitour jobs and flocked to Navy, Ary, Marne Corps and Coast Guard recruitingoffices. We flooded there from small towns, fars, ranches, and big cities, eagerfor excitement, adventure and retaliation. Dog-Tags? Most of us had never evenheard of them. But soon, in Boot Camp, they would become a significant par ofour lives, and the deaths of many of our comrades. Anyone under 18 had to haveboth parents sign papers of releasement to enlist. My mom wouldn't sign so I hadto wait about a year. The Corps' exploits in fighting and defeating Japaneseaggression and expansion on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands attracted and

recruited me. The Marines proved themselves a tough, well trained, well-led fighting force, more than a matchfor our ruthless enemy. We recruits traveled south by train heading for Boot Camp. I never forget arving inSan Diego well before dawn. It was eerie and depressing. Most major buildings in the city were painted acamouflage design. Large cable-tethered barage balloons flew allover the city to protect against the possibiltyof bombing and strafing by our newly acquired enemy. The US was on a war footing. Civilans, as well as themilitar, were dedicated to achieving the final victory over the Axis Powers - Germany, Italy, and Japan - nomatter what the cost. The dog-tags. These were soon issued to every man. In Boot Camp, the first full day, wewere given that special, stylish Marne haircut, dungarees, and certain basic equipment. They also took ourblood type, issued each man a serial number and gave us a series of shots. This basic information was thenstamped on two metal dog-tags which were to be worn around the neck day and night. My seril number was506095 - unforgettable! These two dog-tags were as much of a Marne's career and persona as anything

issued in the Corps. The only time they were to be removed was on the occasion of being either wounded inaction ( WIA ) or killed ( KI ) - two circumstances which you least desired in your stil youthful

life. But we

were wiling to take our chances in order to serve as Marines. Another vital piece of information that wasstamped on our dog-tags was our religious affiliation. In WWL 1 the Korean War the designation was simple.

ifyou were a Catholic, C was stamped right after your serial number-or P for Protestant or H for Hebrew.

if you

were an atheist or agnostic, you drew a blan on your dog-tags. Good luck! I personally was a P at that time, simply because I wasn't a C or an H. I was a P in name only, stamped on metal. Shotly before takng that longtrain ride from Salem, Oregon to San Diego, I was baptized at my parents' earst request. But this good, traditional sacrament did not change the inside of my hear. My life remained as needy as ever, without innerpeace or any type of hope, both in this life and also beyond the grave. If my name and number were to be calledby the Grim Reaper, I was not ready to answer. I was only a dog-tag Chrstian. Mter an accelerated warimeBoot Camp of seven weeks, and after machine gun and tan training, we shipped out to Melbourne, Australia toreplace casualties in the First Marne Division of Guadalcanal fame. As we boarded ship, Red Cross workersgave each Marne a "ditty" bag of personal items, one of which was a Gideon-issued New Testament. A fewweeks later in the little town of Ballarat, while recovering from a severed tendon in my right wrist as a result ofa drunken brawl, I began to dilgently read that New Testament, seeking for answers. In its pages I discoveredthat Jesus Chrst loved me so much that He, the Son of God, had been wiling to die on the Cross for all mysins: the fights, excessive drinkng, using His name in vain, and all the rest. I leared about His resurrectionfrom the dead which gave me hope beyond the grave. On Goodenough Island, near New Guinea in September1943, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. He gave me hear-peace that transcends all humanunderstanding. He helped me to move from being a dog-tag Chrstian - a P stamped on metal- to one uponwhose heart Christ's name is stamped forever!
