The Demons went 3-2, finishing in third place with a 2-1 record in pool play. Their final mark included one vic- tory by a whopping 40-point margin as well as a disheart- ening loss in overtime. Three players — Austin Linville, Harrison Barker and Dontae Marchman — expected to lead the Zephyr- hills High team to another deep postseason run in the up- coming season fared well in that series. “Austin had 23 point in the first game,” coach Mike Cogan said, noting that the guard who will be a senior had several 3-pointers. “He was on fire.” As for Barker, who can play forward or guard, Cogan was equally impressed on how the upcoming senior took charge on the court. “He’s the leader,” the coach said. “He’s the general on the floor.” July 18, 2019 Lions broaden east Pasco boundaries for youth football and cheerleading program Apparently, an arrangement between youth programs in east and central Pasco is working out rather well. The National Eye Institute notes that age is a risk factor for various eye and vision prob-lems. Cogan noted that March-man had some trouble against taller players, which led to some turnovers in the back-court. Additionally, Joshua Cor-pus rebounded well and was strong on the off ensive and de-fensive boards throughout the series. Team Chapel coach Glenn Pelt said his team could have come away with four victories rather than the two it tallied. The outcome, however, was not as important as the level of competition. “We could’ve easily been 4-2,” he said. “When you go to these, of course you want to win but you want the kids to play competition that’s top-notch.” The two victories came against teams from Orlando, 59-54 over Raptors Elite and 66-56 over Team Splash. Team Chapel nearly had three wins, but blew a nine-point lead in a 55-53 overtime loss to The Pro-gram. “We had that game,” Pelt

said, noting that Team Wesley Chapel still led by three points with nine seconds remain-ing and fouled an opponent to force two free throws that would’ve likely led to a win by one or two points and running out the clock. “We defi nitely fouled the kid, but the ref didn’t call it,” Pelt said. The Demons and Team Chapel have played tourna-ments throughout the spring and summer are done for the season. They actually squared off in the AAU State Champi-onship game earlier this sum-mer with the Demons winning that contest by a 63-49 margin in Tavares. In addition to the Zephyr-hills players the Demons ros-ter also has players from Pas-co, Cypress Creek and Sun-lake. Meanwhile, the Team Chapel roster includes play-ers from Wharton in northern Hillsborough County. Both coaches agreed that the experience of playing in summer travel basketball tournaments surely will help players during their upcoming

high school seasons. “It was a good group of kids and they played hard,” Pelt said. “You can’t stress the importance of going out and playing teams from diff erent parts of the country; teams that you don’t see from this area.”

Active warrant A 33-year-old Zephyrhills woman was ar-rested July 6 at Sonny’s B-B-Q, 6606 Gall Blvd. after a check allegedly revealed a warrant out of Polk County for a grand theft charge. A search allegedly revealed three syringes and a bottle cap, which tested positive for suboxone. Arrested was Maria Elena Conception of 37840 Daugherty Rd. Conception was processed by the Zephyr-hills Police Department and transported to the Pasco County Jail.

Active warrant A 46-year-old Zephyrhills man was arrest-ed July 8 at his home after a traffic stop, for an equipment violation, allegedly revealed a war-rant out of Pasco County for violation of proba-tion. Arrested was Randall Bruce Cavanaugh of 5835 8th St. Cavanaugh was processed by the Zephyr-hills Police Department and transported to the Pasco County Jail.

The start of the 2019-20 school year in Pasco County is Aug. 12 and I urge parents and their chil-dren to familiarize themselves with important school safe-ty information provided by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office. Parents and guardians should un-derstand that stu-dent and staff safety is the top priority for the agency on Pasco school cam-puses. It bears re-peating that no weap-ons, illegal drugs, and tobacco products are allowed on any Pasco school campus. This in-cludes vaping products. Unfortu-nately, there are too many students arrest-ed for possession violations every year for all of these products. Making direct or indirect threats to commit acts of violence on any school campus, whether joking or not, is illegal in Florida. It is a felony to threaten any gun violence at a Florida school. The law previ-ously only mentioned threats by bombing, but now any such threat is considered se-rious and no leniency is given for students who are “only joking.” We must consider any such threat, verbal or written, as seri-ous and we will and have arrested any stu-dent making such threats. Last year, the state Legislature amend-ed the law, (FS 836.10) Written Threats to Kill, making it a felony to convey threats of gun violence or acts of terrorism against any person in writing or through any elec-tronic record, which includes posts to so-cial media. Any person who makes, posts, or transmits a threat in a writing or other record, including an electronic record, to conduct a mass shooting or an act of ter-rorism, in any manner that would allow another person to view the threat commits

a felony of the second degree. In a partnership with the Pasco

County School Board, the Pas-co Sheriff’s Office places law

enforcement deputies on middle and high school

campuses through the school resource officer (SRO) program. The primary role of the SRO is the safety and security of our stu-dents and faculty. These full-time dep-uties investigate any crimes commit-

ted on campus and any allegations of child abuse off-campus. SROs ensure

that our school grounds are safe during the school day and at

school events. Every parent should get to know their child’s school resource officer and turn to that individual for any ques-tions about their child’s safety on campus. Parents should encourage their children to report any suspicious behavior or circum-stances to their SRO, school safety guard, or a school official immediately. There are several ways for students or a parent to report concerning or suspicious activity and you can do so anonymously. This includes a new smart phone appli-cation funded by the Florida state legis-lature called FortifyFL, which is available on both the Apple and Google phone app stores. You can also submit a tip to the Pas-co Sheriff’s Office by visiting our website at PascoSheriff.com and clicking on the Submit a Tip link. The official platform for the most up-to-date and accurate information about any major incidents or safety concerns about a school, please follow us at Face-book.com/PascoSheriff.

Pasco County schools saw school grade improvements with increases in the number of A and B schools and decreases in the num-ber of schools under state review. These im-provements reflect the dedication of Pasco County students and teachers this year, as the district’s grade remains a B. Fifteen schools improved by one let-ter grade. Bexley, Lake Myrtle, and Wire-grass elementary schools improved from B to A; Deer Park, Gulf Trace, Marlowe, Pine View and San Antonio elementary schools

improved from a C to a B; and Anclote, Calu-sa, Chasco and Richey elementary schools improved from a D to a C. Wendell Krinn Technical High School scored an A in its opening school year. “I am proud of these positive strides, and I cannot thank our faculty, school-based administrators and staff, and district admin-istrators and staff enough for their passion-ate drive to do what is best for students,” stated Superintendent Kurt Browning.

establishment owner can set certain hours and days where dog dining is permitted. Last-ly, the establishment owner must clearly identify where the dog dining area is. In order to apply, a pro-spective permit-holder must submit an application, create a diagram of the designated area, write a description of the outdoor area and present the days and times that dog din-ing will be permitted in the area. State requirements still apply, such as requiring serv-ers to wash their hands after touching or petting a dog, that dogs must be leashed at all times, that the restaurant must have a cleanup kit and sani-tizer station for dog waste and last that dogs may not eat off plates. Kafe Kokopelli already boasts a, “Pet Friendly” stick-er on their front door, pur-chased as part of the Dogs Day in Dade City annual event that benefi ts the Dade City Dog Park. They seem to be taking the extra step and complying with the county ordinance, even though they are in incor-

porated Dade City. It’s not a stretch of the imagination that local municipalities will even-tually adopt the county ordi-nance. A block away at the Brass Tap, owner Todd Batchelor isn’t pursuing the county permit but he does allow for dogs to accompany their owners on his outdoor patio. “We don’t allow any dogs inside but we do have a pet-friendly patio,” Batchelor said. “We have a number of peo-ple that bring their pets while they enjoy a meal, a beer and of course, great service.” Batchelor is well aware that the county ordinance has a chance to become a city ordi-nance. “I’m all for complying with the county ordinance,” Batchelor said. “If there are any requirements we have to meet, we certainly will com-ply. We will always be a pet-friendly place.” Batchelor and the Brass Tap already have some of the requirements under wraps and they even dole out little extras for their four-legged patrons like setting out water bowls and off ering dog treats. Down in Zephyrhills, Commandough’s fashions it-self as being a pet-friendly res-taurant. “Most of our seating is

outdoors and we’ve always al-lowed dogs,” owner Michael Weaver said. “We’ve never had complaints.” Complaints are almost certainly what prompted the county to pass the ordinance back in February of 2018. “We’ve had way more people complain about smok-ing outside,” Weaver said. “I can see how some of the reg-ulations make sense, I don’t necessarily agree with them all but if we have to follow those rules, we’ll follow those rules. Our overall experience with pets here has been posi-tive. We know dogs’ names like they are regular custom-ers here.” For now, the incorporat-ed restaurants have time and some freedom to host dog diners as they choose but the prospects of both increased dog dining and increased regulations around it are on the rise. For more informa-tion visit the Pasco County website or to download the seven-page ordinance vis-it: https://www.pascocoun-tyfl.net/DocumentCenter/View/33275/Ordinance-17-48-Full-Ordinance?bidId=.

is the Wiregrass director, noted that the Lions have increased in numbers since the merger be-fore the 2017 season. That year there were about 70 boys and girls in the program, a number that grew to 90 last season. With time still remain-ing to sign up there are about 110 members so far this year. “Every year we’re getting bigger,” said Ri-vera, who also coaches Wiregrass’ mighty mites football team. “It’s being more known, creating a good atmosphere that kids want to bring their friends to and doing community things like Main Street parades.” The Lions have had their share of success-es on the football fi eld and cheerleading mat as well. In 2017, the Wiregrass junior varsity team won the PAL Super Bowl while the junior fl y-weights made it to the fi nal, but lost. Last sea-son, the JV squad advanced to the conference fi nal. That 12-13 age group, however, might have a tough time getting back to a championship level since there are only three returners from last season.

Assistant JV coach Marc Dortch recalled just how rewarding it was for Wiregrass to win the 2017 title. The Lions lost to Land O’ Lakes and River Ridge during the regular season be-fore defeating the Gators in the conference fi nal and Knights in the league championship game. “You couldn’t ask for anything better,” he said. “The two teams we lost to in the regular season we turned around and beat in the play-off s.” As for the cheerleaders, league coordinator Marisol Rodriguez noted that the Lions have taken six straight fi rsts in mighty mites compe-titions — three last fall and three more in the spring. While most of the boys and girls in the Wiregrass program are from east and central Pasco, a few come from the New Tampa area, which has two rival youth football and cheer-leading organizations. New Tampa resident Josh Torres, a fi rst-year coach at the mighty mites level, has brought his 8-year-old son Gad-diel to the Zephyrhills-based program to play fl ag football in each of the previous two sea-sons. “This is a low-roster team and it’s a lot of play for the kids,” he noted.
