Maui ShowerhouseJuly 2010 -- Haiku, Maui, Hawaii -- Three Weeks

Assignment -- Design and build a showerhouse for a small dwelling on a site in Maui, Hawaii.

This assignment was given to me by my employer on my first internship. Tom Sewell is an artist/photographer living on a 17 acre property in Maui, Hawaii. He had several small dwellings on his property he would rent out to tourists, and my project was to demolish and rebuild a showerhouse for his main dwelling, the Zen House. I designed the new showerhouse and completely remodeled the entire structure, including brand new walls, a new door, the latticework in the rear for the shower space, and fixture installation.

Komyo-Ji TempleFall 2009 -- Saijo, Japan -- Five Weeks

Assignment -- Research a modern building not in America or Europe, write a paper and construct a model.

This project was part of one of my history classes. I chose to research Komyo-Ji Temple, designed by Tadao Ando in 2001. It is located in Saijo, Japan. After writing the paper, I worked on construction of the model with a group of four other students. We chose to model it in layers to show the different types of construction and jointery Ando used in the building.

VERTFall 2011 -- Fargo, North Dakota -- Ten Weeks

Assignment -- Create an entry for a design competition in Fargo, ND.

VERT brings the skyscrapers of Manhattan into Fargo and integrates vertically oriented structures without disrupting the city’s context. Fargo needs something unique in its downtown community to break away from all of its flat, uninteresting surrounding landscape. VERT will bring the excitement of walking through skyscrapers in a famous downtown region such as New York, to the midwestern city of Fargo, North Dakota. We have achieved the effect of an urban metropolis by lowering the grade of the site by about 100 feet. Towers situated strategically on the site rise up to ten stories tall from the lowest level, and beckon the visitor to walk through an exciting variety of high-end retail spaces. From the street the building is no taller than the surrounding structures. Besides retail, VERT also offers a bank, our innovative vertical grocery store, as well as residential and office space.

Publicizing Short NorthFall 2012 -- Columbus, Ohio -- Fifteen Weeks

Assignment -- Design a cultural center for the Short North District of Columbus, OH.

Short North is a very linear district, its main artery being High Street, that is home to a variety of program including specialty retail, fashion boutiques, art galleries, hair salons, restaurants and bars. It serves as an urban corridor, a channel of activity, and acts as a main transportation route between Downtown Columbus and Ohio State. It is flanked on the east and west by residential zones, a private program. This public activity corridor is what engages social interaction and gives it cultural distinction; it is why people come to the Short North district of Columbus. The idea for my building is to further engage the public through means of sight and sound. Our site is located directly on High Street, and therefore directly on the public corridor. My program is conceptually derived from the idea of display, both visually and audibly, and complements the surrounding programs of the district and city as a whole. To further engage the audience I have reshaped the terrain to pull the activity of the public corridor onto the site.

The main program element is a flexible concert venue, a stage for the public of Short North. Wrapping around this is an experiential art gallery that frames art as well as views throughout the building. Other elements of program include two bars, a music retail store, and classroom space.

June 2011 to August 2012 -- Cincinnati, Ohio

Assignment -- Worked on the architectural design team of a commercial real estate development firm to develop construction documents and client presentations.

Neyer Architects, Inc. is a mid-sized design/build company located in Cincinnati, OH. I began working with them in June of 2011, and for more than a year I was actively participating in design and construction at their office. While I have worked on a wide variety of projects with Neyer, I chose to showcase two specifically in my design portfolio. Shown on this page is the Global Headquarters for the Tempur-Pedic Company. It is a 90,000 square foot commercial project that began construction in Lexington, Kentucky in January of 2012. Clockwise from the right is a perspective rendering taken from the parking lot, different elevation iterations from throughout the design process, and the site plan which I worked on almost exclusively.

The project shown on this page is a commercial office project for the Intelligrated company. This project was interesting because Neyer had built a warehouse and office space for Intelligrated a couple years ago, and now they want to expand onto the adjacent site. We are adding a 110,000 square foot office addition and new parking lot to their existing site. This project just began construction in February 2012. To the left is a perspective rendering of the new addition, and below that is an overall site plan showing the existing and proposed addition. On the bottom right of the page are the Ground Level and First Floor plans, and above those is the Second Floor plan showing connection to the existing building.

CARAPACESpring 2013 -- Flint, Michigan -- Eight Weeks

Assignment -- Create an entry for a parking lot design competition in Flint, MI.

A pneumatic solution to Flint, Michigan’s flat lot problem, CARAPACE will act as an iconic landmark for visitors as well as optimize the current summer events held on the lot. Its contemporary shell-like form will transform the space into a highly interactive gathering and relaxing zone. The inflatable structure was chosen because of the ease and quickness of deployability. The need is for this structure to be set up and taken down in a matter of hours every weekend. CARAPACE will serve as a model of temporary event architecture and transform the future of such structures. This inflatable structure is designed to be flexible enough to accomodate all of the current summer events held on the lot as well as to invite new ones. It is inflated in three sections, which can be set up independently or together to create different types of spaces. When all three are together, there is space for a stage, dance area and seating to view as well as eat and relax.

Winter 2010 -- Cincinnati, Ohio -- Ten Weeks

Assignment -- Design a festival and permanent cultural center for Mt. Adams.

The site given to us was on a corner and had an existing building, the red brick building shown to the right. I decided to create a ceramics festival, given that Mt. Adams, OH is the original home of Rookwood Pottery. The inspiration for my building design was a piece of clay being thrown on a potter’s wheel. Street facades are orthagonal to relate to the context. Inside concentric circles form a paved courtyard space with large curved walls extending toward the sky. Masses relating to the program with varied sizes let light enter the spaces.

Winter 2011 -- Tahoe City, California

Assignment -- Work with a residential design firm to develop architectural drawings and renderings.

The Sandbox Studio, located in Tahoe City, CA, specializes in high-end residential designs. I worked with them to create architectural drawings such as floor plans, roof plans, reflected ceiling plans, electrical plans, site plans, sections and elevations. The images on this page are elevations and electrical plans I worked on for the Beck family. There were several different residences that I worked on with Sandbox, but only three are shown here.

American National PavilionSpring 2010 -- Milan, Italy -- Eight Weeks

Assignment -- Design the United States National Pavilion for the 2015 International Exposition in Milan, Italy.

Food production and sustainability themed this exposition. My design focused on aquaponics, a system combining hydroponics and aquaculture to produce fish and plants simultaneously. In my pavilion, the visitor enters and picks up a brochure according to their language and climate which guides them through the exhibit. An example of one of these brochures can be seen at the bottom of this page. The visitor follows the path of water from the fishtanks, up to the plant cultivation area, then back down into a marketplace where they can learn more about aquaponics and how it can help them produce food in a sustainable manner.
