JOHN SHIPPIn 2012 I completed my Masters of Architecture, graduating from the University of Tasmania. For my final year project I chose the redevelopment of the Spirit of Tasmania Terminal in East Devonport, Tasmania.

In the year following graduation I worked in an architectural office in Hobart, working on a range of typologies including Residential, Education, Commercial and Healthcare, before travelling 3 months across South East Asia. Both of these experiences, as well as a semester on exchange in Poland, have confirmed my interests for urban ecologies - how we house and transport the growing populations in dense urban centres.

I am passionate about Architecture and Design, I am proficient in a broad range of CAD and design suites and have gained broad experience in office culture and workflow.

Afer graduation I took an opportunity to freelance; Providing the Launceston General Hospital with a Sketch Design proposal for a clinical hand over area.

A clinical hand over area is a space where staff can safely and securely pass on important patient information to the next staff member(s) on a shift change. In this case the maternity ward in the Launceston General Hospital.

The project combined two small unused rooms in the maternity ward, requiring planning around existing pluming as well as including personal amenities, lockable storage, an area for staff to sit/lay on long shifts and fixed and flexible office space for hand overs.

The works were completed in 2014.

SPIRIT OF TASMANIA TERMINALINFRASTRUCTURE AS ARCHITECTUREFinal Year Project (2012)

Instructor: Prof. Stephen LooOn September 24th, 2012 the Mercury newspaper had the headline:

“BRING YOUR GUMBOOTS”

The article stated that on arrival to Tasmania, visitors are met with a “muddy and churned-up wastelands more reminiscent of a third world country than a picturesque entry to a holiday destination.”

The proposition for the new Terminal is an upgrade that rids the site of its current utilitarianism to become a cultural hub were visitors and locals alike feel welcome. By bringing the vehicular and passenger boarding to the berths edge a sense of occasion for the arrival and departure of the Spirit of Tasmania has been created.

The approach for this project needed to recognise the role the Spirit of Tasmania plays within this regional-urban fabric of Devonport and the greater role it plays in Tasmania. It needed to embrace the collective nature of a city, working with the existing networks of movement, communications and to manage the quarantine and security efficiently as not to destroy the inherent romance of modes of transport such as sea and rail.

JOHN SHIPP DS3

A house for a forestry worker with a love for mountain bike riding and kayaking. The brief called for a flexible design as his young daughter stayed every second weekend and his sister visited annually for a period of two months.

The steep long site lended to a design for a two storey dwelling. Its position close to the street makes access easy, avoids over shadowing from the well established trees, and provides the best views over Launceston and towards Mt. Burrow.

Cameron Kayaks

This logo was produced for a Tasmanian distributor of Canoe/Kayak gear.

The Client wanted both ‘Tasmania’ (hence the Tasmanian Wedge Tailed Eagle) and ‘Kayaking’ (a kayak paddle) to be clearly represented in a simple monochrome logo.

InControl Services provides existing dental and other clinical fields expertise in infection control standards and management.

The logo uses the visual queue’s existing in medical signage to immediately identified InControl Service as a medical service provider.
