Administrator’s Perspective

Father John R. Rushofsky [email protected] Pastor 412 364 8999

One Out, One In We bid farewell to Father Jim Dolan as he backs down from active ministry and begins a well-deserved retirement. He has served as parish chaplain since our grouping formed in October of 2018, looking after the

needs of the Catholics in the various care homes within the geographical territory of our four parishes. This includes Manor Care, Arden Court, The Haven, and Kane Ross, where he administered the sacraments and celebrated Mass on a regular basis, keeping careful records of everyone he visited. Father Dolan also handled many of our emergency calls.

From the very beginning, Father Dolan has been a team player, always willing to pitch in with whatever was needed. I have had the pleasure of knowing him since we overlapped at Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1974 when he was a deacon and I was a lowly pre-theologian. He has vast knowledge in his head with an interest in almost everything and can discuss a football ref’s erroneous call as easily as a fine point of systematic theology.

We’ll miss his jovial wit, and we wish him well as he begins a new chapter in his life.

As we say goodbye to Father Dolan, we greet our new chaplain, Father Vince Kolo, who has been in residence with us since last summer when he was appointed chaplain to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. He will continue this ministry while he takes on the role of chaplain for our grouping. Father Kolo, who was ordained in 1995, resides at the Saint Teresa rectory.

Like Father Dolan did, Father Kolo will attend to the spiritual needs of the Catholic residents in area care homes. If you know of someone in one of these residences or in UPMC Passavant Hospital, please let us know. These facilities are not permitted to give out that information so we depend on you to inform us.

In Other News: This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of The Epiphany of the Lord, commemorating the visit of the mysterious Magi bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the child Jesus. These gifts symbolize his king-ship, his divinity, and his earthly mortality….And speaking of gifts, thanks to so many of you who generously sent cards, baked goods, candy, etc., to our clergy for Christmas. We are so very grateful….stay tuned for more news….

Something to think about: “Joy is neither mere pleasure nor a fleeting emotion, but a conviction, wrought in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Let us not imagine that this joy, which has its origin in God, is out of reach. It is meant for everyone and dwells most intensely in the humble of heart.” - Baltimore Archbishop William Lori, Knights of Columbus Supreme Chaplain

Neighbors North Greetings! Beginning this month, I will reflect on my seminary experiences and spiritual life. I find it appropriate to start by telling my vocation story. How, exactly, did I get to seminary? What inspired me to think about priesthood? Growing up, I never quite understood the priest. “What is he doing with the bread and wine?” “Why does he get to do it?” “And what’s with the colorful clothes?” Around the time of my confirmation, Saint Teresa of Avila welcomed Father Mike as parochial vicar. As an impressionable 14-year old kid, on the precipice of adulthood in the Church, I was especially receptive to this young, dynamic priest and his homilies. With the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the possibility that maybe, just maybe, these priest guys were on to something, I began to take prayer more seriously. Throughout high school, God whispered in my ear about priesthood, but I still wanted to live my own life and happen to have God as a co-worker or a good friend. This was the recurring theme: “I’ll do it my way, and God will be a good friend along the way.” From North Hills to the University of Pittsburgh, I did so many amazing things with a saxophone in my hand. From band festivals to bowl games, I made countless friends, played great music, and spent amazing weeks at band camp. All the while, I thought, “I’m doing this my way. I chose this for myself, and God happens to be along for the ride.” Before I left for my freshman year at Pitt, we had welcomed Father Chris Mannerino, another young, dynamic priest. Like Father Mike, he was (and still is) on fire with the Holy Spirit, and his authenticity and zeal inspired me to (briefly) reconsider priesthood. Still, I was on my own, self-determined life mission. I wanted to be a high school science teacher and give my life to education. “What a great priest for the parish,” I thought, and I eagerly began my college career. At Pitt, I tried to do things my way. I still prayed and went to Mass. God was still, to me, a good friend. Everything was good… just… good. I was living life, my life, but I became increasingly frantic in a search for the ultimate fulfillment. Something was definitely missing as I changed my major three times, including a complete departure from science into communication and rhetoric. What was it? Sure enough, God had something to say: “Matt, don’t you get it? I showed you Father Mike and Father Chris because I needed you to see examples of

young, dynamic priests. I wanted you to see them inspiring others, and I wanted their example to get you thinking about priesthood. Even if you don’t want to admit it right now, I was right beside you as you marched and played your saxophone. I blessed you with band to show you the value of a total gift of self, a work for the good of others. I wanted you to see the absolute fulfillment of a life of service. I tested you with your college studies because I wanted you to understand my plans for you and honestly consider a deeper, more intimate relationship with me. I wanted you to consider a life of total self-gift to my Church and my people. You know

this gift of self, this “death to self”, and I want you to consider priesthood as the ultimate life for others.” As I continue to discern priesthood at Saint Paul Seminary, I look at the cross. It’s crazy to think that maybe, just maybe, He is calling me to be on a cross of my own as a priest in His Church. One of the books in my pew is Father Brett Brannen’s To Save a Thousand Souls… Not to “help”, not to “lead”, not to “guide”, but to “save” a thousand souls. Is it possible God is asking me to be a part of this saving work? I thank you for all of your prayers and support as my brothers and I continue to ask this question and discuss with God. Saint Augustine says our hearts are restless until they find rest in the Lord. We pray that you may find rest in the Lord as we strive to do.

I wish you all of the best in the new year, and as a final note, I will share an original prayer I wrote within the first few weeks at seminary:

Set me on fire, O Lord.

May what is mine perish, and may what is yours remain in blazing glory.

May my thoughts, my will, my desires be reduced to ash as your thoughts, your will, your desires set my heart ablaze.

Cleanse me, strengthen me, purify me, O Lord, that I may also set the world on fire with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Word traveled quickly. What had been originally been known only to Mary, then to Joseph, and soon shared with intimate friends like

Mary’s cousin Elizabeth, was revealed to the shepherds on the night of Jesus’ birth, and now to foreigners—the magi from the east. A light shines for all to see, revealing God’s glory and drawing people from

all over.

Breaking open the scriptures: In Isaiah, the light is in Jerusalem, the holy city, attracting kings and caravans. In the Gospel, the light is in the sky over Bethlehem, attracting the magi. Paul preaches that the light shines equally for all, Jews and Gentiles, “copartners” in the promise of salvation. Let us listen today for all the foreign places and peoples, enabling us to sing, “Every nation on earth will adore you, Lord.”

“ADORE THE KING” EVENT THIS SUNDAY

There is a wonderful event happening this Sunday afternoon, January 5th, called “Adore the King.” Just as the magi traveled to find and adore Jesus, we will travel by bus or car to all four of our Neighbors North churches for various activities, caroling, prayers, and fellowship. Please see the advertisement elsewhere in today’s bulletin on one of the Neighbors North pages for the complete schedule of visits to St. Athanasius, Incarnation of the Lord, St. Sebastian, and St. Teresa of Avila.

What a wonderful opportunity for all of us to come together! If you haven't yet visited the other churches in our grouping, today would be a good time to start. Go and see for your-self what makes each of our four churches a special place where we encounter the Lord in Word and Sacrament. As we seek to find the Lord this Epiphany, may we also seek to find him in one another. Come, let us adore him.

Financial Peace University Does living paycheck to paycheck sound familiar? Would you be able to cover a $1000 emergency tomorrow? Are you struggling to get traction paying off debt? How about a plan.

Financial Peace University is a 9 lesson class taught through video lecture by financial expert Dave Ramsey. FPU teaches families how to dump debt, build wealth, and become excellent stewards of money. This course teaches couples how to talk about budget and achieve goals through responsible money management. The program walks families through seven baby steps towards building wealth, from saving an emergency fund and permanently dumping debt, to effectively saving for retirement, children’s college and leaving a legacy of wealth.

This is the second time that Neighbors North is hosting this course and it begins on January 20 at Haber Hall on the St. Sebastian site. Classes will take place on Mondays from 7:00-8:30pm. Class size is limited to 10 couples, and registration closes January 13. For more information on cost or any questions, please contact Kate Daczka at [email protected] or contact the Social Ministry office 412-364-8999 ext 8637 or [email protected].

Did You Know? All hospitals, nursing, and personal care homes have a chaplain assigned to them by the diocese. If you or a loved one are in need of spiritual care while in the hospital, do not hesitate to tell the nursing staff that you want to have a visit from the priest or that you would like to receive the Eucharist when available. And if there is a serious condition that calls for the sacrament of anointing of the sick, immediately tell hospital staff of an urgent need. Hospital staff always have a priest on call for urgent needs—but you must let them know. Unfortunately, our parish priests are unable to make urgent hospital visits. The decreasing number of priests and their expanded responsibilities make such visits impossible for them. Our parish chaplain, Fr. Vince Kolo is responsible for personal care and nursing homes in our geographic area: Arden Courts, The Haven, Kane Regional Center, Manor Care, Reformed Presbyterian Home. As the chaplain, he provides spiritual care for all of the Catholic residents in these facilities—quite a large task. If you have a loved one in a personal care or nursing home, make sure that staff know that you want them to receive the Eucharist and chaplain visits. Similarly, hospital chaplains provide spiritual care for all of the Catholic patients in the hospital. While we all might prefer a visit from the parish priest that we know, the hospital chaplain ensures that all are cared for, in a timely manner.

Food Pantry Needs: Juice, hot chocolate, cake frosting, hamburger helper, spaghetti, canned pasta sauce, canned chicken, gravy, macaroni and cheese, boxed and canned potatoes, jelly, cereal, condiments, dishwashing soap, paper products and detergent. Please leave in the food collection bin in the back of St. Sebastian or St. Athanasius Church. We could not provide for our neighbors without your constant, generous help…..Thank You!

Perhaps you have noticed the MARRIAGE MOMENTS clips in our bulletins as the four parishes of Neigh-bors North, Catholic Community has endorsed a plan to continually promote the Sacrament of Marriage; raise the awareness of the value and visibility of marriage and focus on all age strata including the engaged, newly married, those with children and the formative years all the way through the golden years of marriage. At the core is to recognize the importance of marriage as “… the most beautiful thing that God has created,” - Pope Francis In August the Marriage Ministry team at Neighbors North Catholic Community sponsored a wine & cheese party for couples and the feedback we received was to provide more social gatherings for couples to get to-gether for a fun night out and an opportunity to meet new friends. WE ARE PLANNING ANOTHER FUN EVENING FOR COUPLES TO CELEBRATE THE HOLI-DAYS where couples can get to meet one another, get a night out and perhaps continue building a community of friends that share a common value that marriage and family is a wonderful vocation.

Faith Formation

The Epiphany of the Lord The celebration of the Solemnity of the Epiphany has its roots in Eastern Christianity very early in church history. The “revelation” of the Son of God in full humanity is deep, mysterious, awe inspiring, and unitive. The story of the Magi has been told and retold as narrative, folk tale, and in poetry. Musically, complete with camels, bells and chimes, the visit of the Magi is sung in songs, hymns, opera, ballad, and cantata. Frescos and tapestries in medieval churches, mosaics in grand cathedrals and paintings in country chapels all illustrate for us of this powerful story. For millennia, we’ve looked to the stars as symbols of our dreams. Whatever your dream is, my guess it is what you are most passionate about and believe it will bring you happiness. The people of Israel were no different. They dreamed of the day that their Messiah would come and deliver them. The King of

Kings would arrive and take his rightful place, ruling over all nations. What they did not expect was their king to be born as a baby in poverty. Their dream did not come as expected. This is a rich story with a powerful challenge: Can we, as a family, like the magi, lay our gifts at the feet of God and follow the light of Christ as we continue our journey? Our light is the Gospel. What is most important, is that we be attentive, alert, and listen to God who speaks to us. Listening to the Gospel, reading it, meditating on it and making it our spiritual light especially enables us to encounter the living Jesus, to experience him and his love.

Happy New Year

New Year Resolutions (in case you haven’t thought of any yet)

A) Celebrate the sacraments. Go to Mass as a family and re-

ceive the Eucharist. Then go for doughnuts!

B) Pray as a family. Set time aside each day to pray, before

meals, before bedtime.

C) Bring a friend to Sunday Mass. Perhaps someone who is

searching.

D) When you are able, renew your baptismal promises and

pay attention to the small print!

E) Volunteer in a Parish Ministry. Think about your individual

gifts and offer them to God by volunteering in the parish.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS By Susan Vogt

“I guess you were right.” Although Jim and I don’t see our marriage as a competition, still this phrase is one of the sweetest things he can say to me. It usually comes after a disagreement in which each of us was sure we were right. It doesn’t remedy the mistake but it’s SO much better than “I told you so!” I turn toward him with love rather than self-righteousness. Is there something your spouse was “right” about this past week?

Incarnation of the Lord

Community Center

How does CLOW unfold at Mass? After the Collect is prayed and right before the first reading starts, the children are called forward to gather in the center aisle. The priest or the deacon gives them a blessing and the children and adult ministers exit the main body of the church to a pre-arranged gathering space. The ministers “break open” the Scripture on a child’s level so they can understand the readings and relate them to the children’s everyday lives. After the creed and the prayers of the faithful, the children rejoin their families sin the church proper. If you are interested in launching this vital ministry for our children, please feel free to contact Bette Weger, 412-364-8999 or email her at [email protected]. The children truly experience the love of God in their everyday lives. May the Holy Spirit open your hearts to this ministry! Thank You. Holy Cross Academy

Music Happenings with Mr. Levicky

Music class at Holy Cross Academy has been a fun learning experience! Singing, dancing, and playing various rhythm instruments are part of the weekly adventures in class. Students also learned to identify song form and display the form structure by creating matching movements for each section of the song.

Students from Preschool to Third Grade prepared for the annual Christmas Show at Holy Cross, worked hard to memorize their song lyrics and melody lines. The Preschool and Kindergarten program was held on Wednesday, December 11th. Grades 1 – 3 along with the band performed on Thursday, December 12th. Kindergarten sang at the matinee but not at that evening performance since they sang the night before. Holy Cross was asked to participate in a food drive musical event called A Community of Music. This took place at The Block at Northway Mall on Saturday, December 7th. Local schools from around the area performed all day. Some students in grades 3 and 4 volunteered to sing, representing Holy Cross Academy.
