In addition to external Accredited Person (AP) and Transitional Facility Operator (TFO) Training, MPI requires that all staff working at a Transitional Facility have a general awareness of the Biosecurity requirements, even if they do not have a direct role as an AP or TFO.
The purpose of this Awareness Training is to ensure that no team member accidentally compromises the Biosecurity status of a Transitional Facility due to lack of understanding.
The TFO can deliver this Awareness Training or The AgriChain Centre can provide this service for you.
Our knowledgeable Biosecurity Trainers will arrive at your site and deliver a course covering:
• What Biosecurity is and how it is managed.
• What the consequences could be for the national economy and your own site if a major incursion was to happen.
This is a good way to fulfil your MPI requirements, as well as ensuring your staff members get the best information possible.

BIOSECURITYPESTALERT
Mosquitoes breed in standing, or stagnant water – this means that as soon as we see water deposits inside, on top of containers (particularly open top containers with canvas covers) or around our containers and container areas we have a much higher risk for mosquitoes.
Some common places mosquitoes are found are used tyres, open containers on fishing boats and yachts, and lodged in deck cargo on international ships. Transitional
Facility Operators and Accredited Persons play a huge role in protecting New Zealand from a range of mosquitoes. MakesureyoustayvigilantandremembertocallMPIon0800809966assoonasyouspotanythingsuspectinyourcargo.

Everyone is talking about the Zika Virus so in this issue of Bug Business we thought we would look at the nasty mosquitoes around the world that could be finding their way here in sea containers and other cargo.
Zika Virus often results in headaches, mild fever, chills, conjunctivitis, joint pain, muscle aches and a significant rash. Other symptoms include general fatigue, malaise, abdominal pain and vomiting.
Zika Virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes from the Aedes genus. These are the same mosquitoes that spread dengue and chikungunya
viruses. Zika Virus potentially causes Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) and has been linked to pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and various other poor pregnancy outcomes. While many of these have yet to be shown to be caused by the Zika Virus itself, there is clearly a link between them.
While Zika can only be carried by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes (such as the Asian Tiger Mosquito below), as part of your container and cargo checks you should always be on the lookout for any mosquitoes.
Here are some critters we want to keep out of New Zealand...

Either the Transitional Facility Operator's trainingis overdue and he/she has not retrained or thenominated and approved Transitional FacilityOperator has left the company - this is a majornon-conformanceandleadstosuspension.
You cannot operate the facility and receive seacontainers whilst suspended. This can be a majorinconvenienceandleadtoextracostsanddelays.
We can assist you to make sure your facility remains compliant and meets MPI Standard TFGEN requirements.
Give our Biosecurity Team a call on 0800-247-424 and we
will provide guidance.
All sea containers must be checked by a current Accredited Person (AP). If contamination is found in/on the container or goods then MPI must be notified.

One of the most sought-after services that The AgriChain Centre offers is guidance with Internal Audits at Approved Transitional Facilities. The minimum requirement for Internal Audits is once per year, however, many sites are required to do them more often based on their particular requirements.
As an Independent Service Provider we provide a fresh set of eyes to look at your processes and record keeping at your site and quickly find any gaps in what you are doing. Our experienced Biosecurity Consultants can visit your site, provide advice on process improvements and help to ensure you are compliant with MPI requirements that apply to your site.
