espite summer downpours, spirits inthe Isle of Man were not dampened

for the Olympics Torch relay and theDiamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queenspecial events taking place in June.Celebrations started off in the rain for thearrival of HRH The Prince of Wales andHRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The Royalcouple were treated to a demonstrationcycling race by young Island cyclists at theNational Sports Centre in Douglas beforecrossing to Peel on the west coast of theIsland to meet with the lifeboat crew and aselection of Manx food producers. The Princeis well known for his interest in organicfoods and he and Camilla spent a great dealof time sampling Manx cheeses, fish andother produce of the Island.

On the first day of racing at the TTmotorbike races the Olympic Torch landed atRonaldsway Airport and the selected runnersand riders began the relay for this historicoccasion on the Isle of Man. Tom Black, aPost Office employee and Manx Cyclist, waschosen to carry the baton on his bike alongDouglas promenade. There were crowdseverywhere to see the baton being carriedon all modes of local transport, including ahorse tram, electric tram, motorcycle andlifeboat.

Whilst all this was in progress on the Island,Her Majesty the Queen was preparing forthe wonderful Jubilee celebrations takingplace in London and nationwide. The ThamesDiamond Jubilee Pageant was a very specialoccasion for the people of the Isle of Man aswe had representatives in the Viking boatand also the last remaining lifeboat of theIsle of Man steamer ‘Lady of Mann’ whichserved in WW2. The Viking boat had a threehour row before they got to their start linebut they still had enough energy to completethe course and proudly fly the Manx flag. Thelifeboat didn’t fare as well as it began to takeon water and had to be rescued by thelifeboat. The stories of the Pageant are thestuff legends are made of and the Vikingsfrom Peel will certainly dine out on theirexperiences for a long time.

Maxine Cannon, our Sales and MarketingManager, was in London for all thecelebrations and has been busy working on acelebratory folder which will containwonderful memories of the four days inJune 2012 when the people who turned outto celebrate made Her Majesty the Queenso proud of her glorious sixty years on thethrone.

PAGE 2 STAMP & COIN NEWS – SUMMER 2012

It was with genuine sadness I heard that followinga number of years of ill-health George or GBH asI frequently referred to him had passed away inRamsey. George would ring me up numeroustimes each day to place orders, share an idea ormore times than not tell me where we weregoing wrong with every aspect of the PhilatelicBureau. He was formidable and many a PostOffice employeee past or present from ChiefExecutives, Board Members to postal officersexperienced the GBH school of doing business-forthright is one way to describe it! He never borea grudge, he said what he thought and moved on.Through it all though, George wanted the verybest for his customers, everything had to be spoton and delivered yesterday, one of his favouritesayings was “we couldnt sell snow to Eskimos.”He was our sounding board on many occasionsand was always ready to give his honest opinionbased on what was best for the collector of Isle

of Man stamps. Anotherof his stock phrases was“the Collector needs tobe complete and know hehas everything, if not hewill close his account”,again a very truestatement. (George soldhis business to his longtime friend Mike Southall)George also had a wickedsense of humour whichbrought light relief to every phone call. Therewere times when I thought “oh no not GBH,what does he want this time” but now when Ithink I'll ring him to run past an idea and he isn’tthere, I feel the terrible void he has left in theworld of Philately. There will never be anotherpersonality like him. Our deepest sympathies areextended to his wife Esther and family.

It was the highlight of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, bringing the Thames alive as it resounded with clanging bells, tooting horns and piercing whistles and recalling both its royal

heritage and its heyday as a working river. When the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant took place on the afternoon of Sunday June 3, 2012 –

just six weeks before the London Olympic Games - it showcased one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the Thames and the largest collection of historic vessels.

Crowds of Londoners and tourists lined the route to catch a glimpse of the Queen, who herself had already launched 25 ships, and to wave at boats such as the Amazon, which took part in Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee

celebrations a century ago.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleasedto present thisminiature sheet incelebration of theThames DiamondJubilee Pageant.

Memorable attractions included the Boadicea, an oyster smack, which is the oldest sailing boat still afloat in Europe, andGloriana the royal rowbarge, an 88-foot gilded barge, resembling a Viking vessel and rowed by 18 oarsmen.More than 1,000 vessels, including Dunkirk little ships, dragonboats, narrowboats, steamboats and tugs, rowing boats, kayaksand canoes from all corners of the Commonwealth, festoonedwith garlands, streamers and Union Flags, motored, sailed orfloated along the seven-mile route from Putney to Tower Bridge. There was even a replica of a Viking longboat. The procession went under a total of 14 bridges and was led by afloating belfry with eight new church bells, commissioned bythe church of St James at Garlickhythe and cast at theWhitechapel foundry. They were echoed by the peals of thebells of riverbank churches along the route. It was divided into ten sections with music herald bargesseparating each one, playing a range of tunes from traditionaland classical music to more contemporary pieces, includingworks commissioned especially for the occasion. At its centre was the royal barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, decorated in red and gold, and carrying the Queen and the Dukeof Edinburgh, who is now Lord High Admiral in the Royal Navy. The armed forces, fire, police and rescue services wererepresented and passenger boats, carrying up to 30,000 flag-waving members of the public took part in the floatingcelebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

The bascules of Tower Bridge were raised in salute and, downriver of London Bridge, there was a gun salute as theflotilla passed through a spectacular ‘avenue of sails’ formed bytraditional Thames sailing boats, oyster smacks, square riggersand naval vessels with sails too high to pass under LondonBridge. There was a rare opportunity to see a replica of TheGolden Hinde, in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated theglobe in 1577.The flotilla travelled at a speed of 4 knots with the ebbingtide increasing its speed over ground to 6 knots. The oldestboat taking part was built in 1740, while the largest boat was65 metres long and 42 metres high. Each participating boatwas provided with a specially designed Diamond Jubileeensign as a lasting souvenir. The pageant is the latest in a long line of royal celebrationson the Thames amongst which was Queen Anne Boleyn’sCoronation in 1533; an extravagant pageant for King CharlesII and Queen Catherine of Braganza in 1662 and aflamboyant musical event held in 1717 by King George I.In 1977 the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh celebratedtheir Silver Jubilee with a River Progress from Greenwich toLambeth. They watched from County Hall as 140 vesselstook part in a river pageant. Now, 25 years later, they wereback on the Thames again.

The year 2011 was remarkable for ‘Cav’, even by his high

standards, as he won the Tour de France Green Jersey and

World Road Race Championship, was awarded an MBE and

was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He will win

many more races and receive many more honours, but this is

a perfect moment to celebrate his achievements so far with

this Isle of Man Post Office stamp issue.

The first of the seven stamps, 38p value, shows his victory in the

2006 Commonwealth Games Scratch Race - one of the greatest

achievements in the Isle of Man’s proud sporting history. Mark is

only the second Manx cyclist to win Commonwealth gold - Peter

Buckley won the road race in 1966.

A few months after the Games, Mark turned professional

and the 41p value stamp shows him winning his first ‘pro’

race, the 2007 Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen.

In 2008 Mark stunned the cycling world by winning stages of

the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France. He had proved that he was

the fastest sprinter in the world, but as the 2009 season began

he had still to win one of cycling’s ‘monuments’ - the most

prestigious single day classic races. The 65p stamp shows Mark

winning the 2009 Milan - San Remo classic in which he

snatched victory from Heinrich Haussler right on the line.

The Tour de France is the most gruelling endurance event in sport,

and for a sprinter the greatest prize is the Tour’s Green Jersey. Mark

had come close to winning it before he finally achieved his lifelong

ambition to wear it on the Champs Elysees in the 2011 Tour de

France. It was confirmation that he was the best sprinter in the

world - and potentially of all time. Mark is featured doing a lap of

honour after the final stage of the Tour de France on the 71p stamp.

Mark achieved one of the highlights of his career to date winning the

2011 World Road Race Championships in Copenhagen, illustrated

on the 80p value. With this historic victory came the coveted road

race ‘Rainbow Jersey’ that he will wear for the whole of the 2012

season, as he appears on the £1.05 stamp. Before Mark won in

Copenhagen in 2011 only one other Briton had won the men’s title

as a professional - Tom Simpson in 1965. To date, this is Mark’s

greatest achievement.

At the end of 2011 Mark signed for Team Sky, and the £1.16 stamp

- the final value in this collection - shows him riding for his new

team wearing the ‘Rainbow Jersey’ as the reigning road race World

Champion. Apart from at the Olympic Games when he will wear

Team GB colours, Mark will wear the World Champion’s jersey

throughout this season. It is a great honour, but one which also

carries with it a duty to race with the pride and passion of the

legendary riders who have preceded him in wearing the coveted

rainbow bands.

There was never any doubt that Mark would fulfil this

duty, and he began the 2012 season in a manner befitting

his status as World Champion by winning two stages of

the Tour of Qatar. He then won the Belgian semi classic

Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne with his trademark sprint finish

and followed this with a stage win in Italy at the Tirreno-

Adriatico. It was the perfect start to a season which will

see Mark attempt to win the Tour de France Green Jersey

again, and gold for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic

Games. Mark has already produced many outstanding

performances, but perhaps the most remarkable aspect of

his career is that his greatest achievements may still be

ahead of him.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to

commemorate the sporting achievements of

Mark Cavendish MBE the Island’s most

successful sportsman

The Bee Fauna of the Isle of Man

Steve Crellin writes... Apart from the honeybee, the Island ishome to approximately 15 species of bumblebees and 57species of solitary bees. To put this in perspective, currently 24species of bumblebees and over 200 solitary bee species arerecorded from the British Isles. On the Island these bees can befound foraging from flowers on our mountain moorlands wherethe lovely Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola), amongstseveral other species, visit bilberry and heather flowers, rightdown to the Island’s coastal fringes where a number of beesmake a living, for example on the Ayres and the soft cliffs ofRamsey Bay.

Most of us will be familiar with some of the various bumblebeesthat visit our garden flowers, but the solitary bees will be lessfamiliar and it may be only when they are nesting in our lawnsor flower beds that we notice them. They are called solitary beesbecause, unlike the honey and bumble bees, there is no workercaste and they do not live in colonies although they can formlarge nesting aggregations such as those of Colletes succinctus.Other solitary bees, known as cuckoo bees, forgo building andprovisioning their own nests but sneak their eggs into the nestsof other bees where they develop after eliminating theircompetition for the nest’s provisions. The silver and whiteEpeolus variegatus is one such cuckoo bee which can be foundon the Ayres where it takes advantage of the efforts of bees suchas species of the genus Colletes.

A Short History

Harry Owens writes…The written history of bees in the Islandgoes back to well before 1550 AD when 11 bee boles were builtat a farm called Ballachurry in the south. Here also is the lastremaining bee-house used for wintering skep bees, whichconsists of a window-less small roofed building about fourmetres square, inside of which are built-in recesses toaccommodate various sized skeps. There also remains about six

or more bee bole sites in other locations on the Island. Inaddition, before the reformation, we had a large monasterylocated at Ballasalla called Rushen Abbey and situated in the bestfarming area of the southeast; the monks must have kept bees.

I would theorise that a land bridge could have stretched fromwhat is now Cumbria or Galloway in southern Scotland; as thedepth of the sea in that area is reasonably shallow, and goingwestwards to Northern Ireland likewise, thus depth is shallowenough to regard the possibility of such a bridge. Food forthought!

On the Isle of Man we have in the region of 120 beekeepers withvarying numbers of colonies, 100 of them are fully paid-upmembers of the IOM Beekeepers Federation affiliated to theBBKA, comprising of three districts. I would estimate that thereare at least 400 colonies kept by these beekeepers.

The Status of our Native Bee Population

We had a Bee Disease Act 1987 that not only set out the controlof Foulbrood but also completely banned the import of any typeof live bees into the Island. We are varroa mite and Foulbrooddisease free. Unfortunately, the Isle of Man is an associatemember of the European Community and has to follow certainprotocols; these protocols allow free movement of mostlivestock and food between member states and this puts ourbees at great risk.

Harry Owens...

Harry Owens is a Manxman by birth and has been, for the last 30years, the Adviser and Bee Disease Officer to the Isle of ManGovernment’s Department of Environment, Food andAgriculture. He is also the current Treasurer of the IOMBeekeepers Federation and Chairman of the Western DistrictBeekeepers Association. Harry has been a member of both theBee Improvement and Conservation Association and the BritishBeekeepers Association since 1968.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this beautiful stamp issueon honey-scented paper dedicated toone of our most popular and belovedinsects and recognising its crucial rolein the life cycle of the natural world.

COINS AND COLLECTABLES

Isle of Man Treasury CoinsCooinaghyn Tashtey Vannin

M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGIIn 1981 the world’s first £5 coin minted forgeneral circulation was issued by the Isle ofMan. The design was of a triskelion on anoutline map of the Island and was identicalto that on the first thin £1 coins nicknamed“Percy’s”, after the Manx Treasury Minister, PercyRadcliffe, who introduced them in 1978.

These £5 coins were produced by the Pobjoy Mint in Sutton, Surrey. They were 36mm in diameter and made of ‘Virenium’, an alloy of copper, tin and zinc. In 1981a total of 22,414 Virenium coins were minted and just over a1,000 in 1982 and nearly 1,500 in 1983. Five pound coins with asuperior finish were also minted in small quantities for collectorsas well as coins produced in Sterling Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The 20p coin first went into circulation in 1982. Again, the Isleof Man beat the rest of the world’s sterling area (but only just!)to introduce a coin of this value. The coins depict Viking armsand armour of the 9th to 13th centuries, including a wingedhelmet, a breastplate, broadswords, spears, battleaxes anddaggers. There is also shown a Norse ‘targe’ or shield bearing a‘lymphard’ or Viking galley emblem with Viking ornamentation. When introduced, the coin also had a nickname of the ‘scorer’.

This rather complicated design lasted just two years beforebeing replaced by the ‘three herrings’ designin 1984. A total of 824,892 cupro-nickel 20p coins wereminted in 1982 and 115,610 in 1983.

Mention has already been made of the £1 thin‘Percy’s’ introduced in 1978. In 1983 the UK firstintroduced a £1 coin. Its diameter was the same as that of theManx £1 coin but it was almost twice as thick. For compatibility,a thick Manx £1 coin was also put into circulation in 1983.

It was the first in a series of four coins to showthe Arms of the towns in the Isle of Man. The1983 coins depict the Peel Town Arms; ahorizontal garter showing Peel Castle andCathedral ruins with fishing boats in theforeground and surrounded by the wording PEEL ·TOWN · COMMISSIONERS, above the date 1983. All four coins in this Town Arms series were minted inVirenium.

The 1984 coin bears the Castletown Town Arms: A stylisedrepresentation of Castle Rushen above waves of the sea andsurmounted by a crown within a shield. To the left of the crownis a triskeles and to the right a deer’s head. Within the scroll isthe Manx word SHICKRYS meaning ‘steadfast’. Above the shieldis the word CASTLETOWN.

The 1985 Ramsey Town Arms: The Town Arms shows a birdperched on the Albert Tower in front of the sun’s rays with acrowned scroll above. A swan faces inwards either side of atriskeles in a shield. The whole contained in an ornate shield andsurmounted by the word RAMSEY.

The 1986 Douglas Town Arms: The intricate coat of arms has acrowned helmeted crest. The shield is quartered and shows aViking ship with sails furled, an eagle and child with the cap ofmaintenance, a lion rampant and a triskeles going anti-sunwise.The upper scroll has the wording BOROUGH OF DOUGLASand the lower one is entirely in Manx. The coat of arms issurmounted by the wording DOUGLAS.

Obverse: All the 1981-86 coins show the first profile portrait ofHer Majesty by Arnold Machin, as used on the first Manxdecimal coins of 1971.

We continue our history of Manx Coinage with New ManxDecimal Coins introduced in 1981-86

Celebrate A Real Winner...Isle of Man Stamps & Coins is pleased to present a most prestigious stamp issue, inspired by the London2012 Olympic Games. Designed by internationally renowned British designer Sir Paul Smith, this veryspecial set of stamps went on sale at 00.01 a.m. on January 1st 2012 at the Island’s main Post Office inDouglas – a ‘world first’, that has proved extremely popular worldwide. We are hugely honoured and thrilled that Sir Paul Smith agreed to design our Olympic collection. He aspired to design a truly positive and colourful collection with a strong graphic style of design –something we certainly feel he has achieved with this iconic set, we hope you will agree.

Sir Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was accidental. His ambitionwas to become a professional racing cyclist until aged seventeen yearshe was involved in a road accident. Three months in hospital followedand when he came out he knew he wanted to do something creative. With the encouragement from his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (nowwife), and a small amount of savings, he opened a tiny shop inNottingham in 1970.He started to take evening classes, studying tailoring and by 1976 Paulhad shown his first menswear collection in Paris.Today there are fourteen collections including ready-to-wear for menand women, accessories, shoes and junior. Paul Smith has seventeenshops in the UK and sells to sixty six countries in the rest of the worldwith shops in Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Korea, Kuwait,U.A.E. and Japan. Paul continues to be an integral part of thecompany; he is both designer and chairman and is continually involvedin every aspect of the business.

The Centenary of the Royal Flying Corps - Issue Date 20.09.12We commemorate this landmark occasion with a set of six stamps featuring the wonderfully-detailed illustrations ofaeronautic artist Arvo Vercamer.

The Corps was formed by a Royal Warrant in April 1912 and began as a collection of disparate groups until it becamethe unified fighting force that numbered 27 squadrons with over 420 aircraft plus a further 216 in depots and trainingat the time of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. We tell the story of the formation and success of the Corps andpinpoint the significant aircraft that were so vital in its development.

The Centenary of Scott’s South Pole Expedition - Issue Date 02.10.12Our miniature sheet commemorates the centenary of Scott’s heroic expedition to the South Pole. We are grateful forthe uniquely-qualified contribution of Sir Ranulph Fiennes and to the Scott Polar Research Institute for permission tofeature the extraordinary photographs of Herbert Ponting which, in Sir Ranulph’s words, powerfully serve ‘to remind usall of the stark reality of the conditions faced by Scott and his men, the very first human beings to penetrate and learnabout Antarctica.’

Christmas Scenes – A Time Gone By - Issue Date 20.10.12Ramsey-born artist and ex-IOM Post Office employee Michael Starkey says of his work featured on our six-stamp set:‘In my paintings I try to capture a moment of time. I work from faded black and white photographs of old buildings andstreets that no longer exist and then bring them back in colour with memories and research. I hope the paintings willstimulate conversations about people and places. These Christmas paintings are based on this principle.

I have an image in my mind of that feeling just before the light fades in the winter and the lights in houses start toflicker on and Christmas lights glow in the gloom. At this darkest time of the year this brings hope and comfort to all.’

As our Christmas postal issue, the IOM and UK values of this colourful set are also available in self-adhesive form.
