Allen Packwood, Director, Churchill Archives Centre writes…Fifty years after his death, and seventy five years after his “finest hour” in 1940, we continue to be fascinated by the life and character of Winston Spencer-Churchill.He was the rebellious school boy who was not considered bright enough for university, but who went on to publish more than forty books and to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. This was the soldier who saw action as a young man in Cuba, the Indian north-west frontier, the Sudan and South Africa, and who commanded a battalion on the Western Front in the First World War.Here was the politician who changed his party twice, but yet still became a member of the British Cabinet at the age of just thirty-three. His was a rollercoaster of a career, often controversial, but always at the heart of events, and somehow able to survive serious setbacks, crises, and years of political isolation.Churchill sought consolation in painting and in bricklaying, fortified himself with good food, fine wines and cigars, and used his pen and his voice to advance his views. He spoke out against the dangers of Nazi-ism and established himself as the most high profile and vocal opponent of the policy of appeasement.

It was on 10th May 1940, the day that Hitler invaded France and the Low Countries, that Churchill finally became Prime Minister. He was

sixty five years old and now faced the biggest challenge of his career, leading a National government through the greatest crisis faced by his country in modern times.

Yet he felt himself to be “walking with destiny”.

As this set of stamps illustrates, the many different aspects of Winston Churchill came together to make and shape the war leader.

The wilfulness and rebelliousness of the school boy never really disappeared. At times, they made Churchill a difficult political colleague, prepared to abandon party for policy, but they also informed his stubborn defiance of Nazi Germany, while the bravery of the young soldier gave him the self belief to assume the premiership at a moment of grave national crisis.

His enthusiasm and energy for life translated into the motto “Action this Day”; his love of history, literature, art, of food and drink, provided him with the conviction that he was fighting for the cause of civilisation against barbarism; while his mastery of words allowed him to articulate British war aims in a way which cleverly – and simultaneously – rallied Domestic morale while sending a message of hope to occupied Europe, a statement of defiance to the enemy, and an appeal for aid to the United States.

The Isle of Man Post Office is proud to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of one of British history’s greatest figures. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of his final year as Prime Minister and we are very pleased to have collaborated with the Churchill Archives Centre and Chartwell on this landmark set of eight stamps. We showcase the range of Churchill’s life activities from statesman and orator to leisure painter and bricklayer.

Most women Sheep are into outdoor activities while the male ones tend to focus their energy on their jobs or business.

Battle of Waterloo - 200th Anniversary Issue date 08.05.15 The Battle of Waterloo was a milestone in European history representing, in the words of Victor Hugo, the hinge on the door of the nineteenth century, and a period of unparalleled change. The defeat of Napoleon in 1815 ended 23 years of global war with the loss of 3 million European souls. This set of six stamps recognises and remembers the brave men who died in conflict.

Maritime History Miniature Sheet Issue date 01.05.15 Original artwork from painting sailor John Halsall commemorates four maritime events from Manx history, including the 100th Anniversary of HMS Ramsey sinking, the Master Frank RY95 (the Island’s oldest vessel sailing from Peel), The Wanderer (rescue boat to Lusitania) and the 75th Anniversary of the loss of Mona’s Queen.

Centenary of the Women’s Institute Issue date 25.04.15 Established in 1915, the WI is the largest women’s voluntary membership organisation in the UK and has over 212,000 members in 6,600 WIs across England, Wales and the Islands. Every WI belongs to a federation and the Isle of Man Federation’s 750 members have always taken an active interest in a huge range of activities from craft and home economics, to public affairs and science – topics covered in a set of six stamps to commemorate 100 years of the WI.
