Dot’s Message Chaghteraght Dot

s I write it is a most beautifulsummer day on our Island.

I drove along Douglas promenadethis morning and looked outtowards the Tower of Refuge, the sea was so calm.

Although the promenade has beencrammed with TT fans, the beachno longer fills up with throngs ofvisitors and locals as it did manymoons ago. Each day during theheight of the summer the postoffice would process thousands ofpostcards, we even had a seasonalpost office in the Villa MarinaColonnade - staff clammered towork there as it was close toFelices Ice Cream Parlour!

We have captured the spirit ofthe bygone tourist era with ourTails of the Tailless issue inspired

by a local collection of Manx catpostcards, which we hope youwill enjoy.

The second part of ourInternment Camp series alsoderives in part from antiquepostcards but features postalhistory of a different nature:handstamps, cachets and evenan unofficial postage stampwhich was used in theKnockaloe Camp during WW1.Unlike the mass-produced touristcards these hand-engraved worksare rich in detail and wereproduced in a very differentcontext. I found the researchmaterial for the stamp issue truly fascinating.

I hope you have a lovely summer, with all good wishes

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date –23rd June 2011

There is a Victorian saying: “There is no end of cats inthe Isle of Man because they have no ends. These arethe totally tailless”.

There is no end to them either, despite repeatedpredictions about their imminent extinction. They stillroam free on their Island home and internationally areprized pets.

Animated cartoons have portrayed Manx cats as dim-wits like Stimpson J. Cat, or cowards, like MayorManx in the Hanna-Barbera 1990s series Swat Cats.Really, they are tough, determined and bright.

Their hunting instincts were demonstrated at a WorldMousing Championship at a 1964 Calgary cat show. AManx cat was the fastest to follow a mouse’s scentthrough a glass maze. Little wonder then, that a Manxcat was a mouser in the House of Lords in the early1940s and another, the black ‘Peta’, in Britain’s HomeOffice in the 1960s.

A gift from the Island in 1964, ‘Peta’ invaded 10Downing Street and roughed-up the resident Siameseowned by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. There wereno repercussions; however, as The Home Office onceruled that she enjoyed ‘diplomatic status.’

Manx cats have been the companions of royalty andthe famous: for example - ship’s cat on the formerroyal yacht, Britannia.

Walt Disney, creator of Mickey Mouse, had a black one.Manxie was a gift from the Isle of Man in 1933 androamed the Disney studios. The unrealised hope wasthat he would inspire the creation of a Manx catplaymate for Mickey.

Two Manx cats were adopted by Koko, the Gorilla Foundation’s amazingly communicativelowland gorilla. The first, named All Ball by Kokobecause she looked like a ball of fur, became aninternational celebrity. When Koko was told of AllBall’s accidental death she hooted mournfully inpainful understanding.

Today a Manx cat named Zoe is used as a logo forthe American-based Zoe Foundation, whose objectiveis the creation of a preserve for endangered tigers. The slogan, which applies as much to Manx cats astigers, is “extinction is not an option”. Throughoutthe world show standards for Manx cats vary.

Traditionally, on the Isle of Man Dimple Rumpies aretotally tailless, with an absolute hollow where a tailwould begin. Rumpy Risers have a hint of a tail.Stumpies have a little more. Tailed cats, known asLongies, can be Manx if they carry the appropriategenes and display other Manx characteristics that canbe passed on to their tailless kittens.

Other distinctive features are: a round and large head,a nose longer than that of a good British shorthair, prominent cheeks; ears wide at the base and taperingslightly to a point; hindquarters, exceptionally high;rump round; back short. Of primary importance is a‘hopping gait.’

The coat must be ‘double’ - open and soft like arabbit’s; colour - immaterial though the earliestrecorded was ‘brown tabby,’ otherwise ‘tiger’ - earthbrown with black markings.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to

present a set of six stamps featuring artworks

from a series of Manx Cat postcards.

This example has been hand coloured, as it wasoriginally printed blue and white.

BOTTOM RIGHT PAIR: LEFT HAND STAMP:

The postcard printed within Knockaloe Camp and designedby an internee depicts the general layout of Knockaloe Camptogether with a backdrop of a map of the Isle of Man, a Manxcat and emblem of the Three Legs of Man. It shows variousbuildings within the Camp and it sends “Greetings from thePrisoners at Knockaloe Camp, Peel, Isle of Man”. This card isundated.

RIGHT HAND STAMP: This depicts the Internee-producedstamp from around 1916, believed to be sold for 2d andused, as this example indicates, on an internal Knockaloe mailsending i.e. from one camp to another. This cover is believedto have been sent by the actual designer of the stamp and itis thought that he designed the Knockaloe IOM Single Circlecancelling it.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present aset of 8 stamps to document the postal history of theKnockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man.

LEFT HAND SIDE OF MINIATURE SHEET(Also, cover image of presentation pack)

This depicts a coloured steel engraving of KnockaloeCamp stretching from the main road at Patrick villageacross Knockaloe Moar Farm out towards the westcoast of the Island, which was published by theinternees. Inset are pictures of Peel Castle and PatrickChurch where some two hundred internees, who diedduring their internment, were buried; these beingrepatriated in the 1960s to the German War Cemeteryin Staffordshire, England. A smaller black and white version of this engraving, depicting only the Internment Camp itself, was alsoproduced by the internees.

TOP PAIR: LEFT HAND STAMP:This postcard depicts a number of the huts, withwashing hung out to dry, at Knockaloe Camp in 1916,publisher unknown.

RIGHT HAND STAMP:The King George V 1d, first issued on the 28thSeptember 1912, is cancelled by The CampKnockaloe Peel Double Circle, datestamp 28thOctober 1915, which was first issued in 1915. Thiscover is an official Prisoners of War envelope and isnot overprinted for specific use at Knockaloe Camp. Also applied to the envelope is the Violet small typeAliens’ Detention Camp Censored Knockaloe, I.O.M.Double Oval which is also known to be used in Blackand Blue colours.

BOTTOM PAIR: LEFT HAND STAMP:This postcard by an unknown publisher was issued tosend “Easter Greetings to Home” in 1917. Althoughit does not specifically mention KnockaloeInternment Camp, the card was sent by a Knockaloeinternee and the style is characteristic of thoseproduced within its Camps. Also depicted is a clearexample of The Camp Knockaloe Peel Double Circlecancelling a “D“ Registration Label, datestamp 14thSeptember 1915, which was first issued in 1915.

RIGHT HAND STAMP:The 3d King George V Registered Envelope, firstissued in 1912, is cancelled with two strikes of TheCamp Knockaloe Peel Double Circle, datestamp 14thSeptember 1915, first issued in 1915. Also affixed tothe front of the envelope is the “D” type No. 39Registration Etiquette, which were temporary labelsissued when either a Post Office had run out of labelsor were required for special occasions. In thisinstance, it is reasonable to assume that, with theopening of the Knockaloe Camp Post Office by theBritish Post Office during 1915, the personalised“Knockaloe Camp, I Of Man” labels had not beenprinted and issued, hence the use of this temporarylabel until late 1915. Also applied to the envelope isthe Violet small type Aliens’ Detention CampCensored Knockaloe, I.O.M. Double Oval which isalso known to be used in black and blue colours.
