S pring is in the air and we attended two exhibitions in London - Spring

Stampex at the Design Centre, Islingtonand the BBC’s ‘Who Do You Think YouAre’ exhibition at Olympia.

We teamed up with our friends fromGuernsey, Jersey and Gibraltar for Stampexand Sue Corkill, of our customer servicedepartment, manned our stand. Sue is nostranger to Stampex and was delighted tomeet all the regulars who make the journeydown to the metropolis. The RoyalEngagement miniature sheet was the star ofthe show and public reaction illustrated whata popular couple Prince William and Kate arewith the majority of people.

Our Isle of Man Genealogy stamps, issued inFebruary, gave us our first venture into thewonderful world of family history. Thepopularity of researching our origins has beenpromoted by numerous TV shows tracing theancestors of celebrities who have discoveredsome amazing connections. We shared ourbusy stand at the ‘Who Do You Think You Are’

exhibition with The Isle of Man Family HistorySociety, our Department of Tourism and ManxNational Heritage - whose presence coincidedwith the opening of their iMuseum here onthe Island. It was the first time theDepartments and the Society had beenrepresented at the event and, with laptopsfiring on all cylinders, it was a joy to be therewhen another piece in the ‘family jigsaw’ wasdiscovered after years of searching.

Our own Maxine Cannon met up with TVhistory broadcaster Tony Robinson at the show.

No stranger to the Island, Tony admired theGenealogy products and rememberedenthusiastically our Viking stamps by his friendand colleague Victor Ambrus.

Finally, we have a bit of a reputation for ourexcellence in producing special collectablestamp folders. If I may draw your attention toour Lifetime of Service CommemorativeFolder on Page 9 - it really is one of the bestfolders we have ever done in my opinion.Sixty years is an historic milestone in any termsand the unstinting devotion to duty that HerMajesty the Queen and HRH Prince Philiphave made over this period is immeasurable.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 1st April 2011

In the Isle of Man 19 species of butterfly may be seenduring the year– at different times and places. This is only athird of the number in Britain (59) though some of themare surviving better here than across the Irish Sea.

Butterflies have an intimate relationship with plants. Theillustrations show them using some of their favoured flowersources for food. The Red Admiral is illustrated on Buddleiawhich is a well used nectar source in gardens, parks and theroadsides in high summer. It is also popular with theComma and Small Tortoiseshell, and the Painted Lady. ABuddleia in full flower in a sunny position in August canhave dozens of these related species.

Ragwort is also a popular nectar source for butterflies;appropriately as it is the Manx national flower (Cushag) and widely distributed.

It is frequented by the Small Copper and by the CommonBlue though this latter species will use a variety of plants tofeed on. The Green-veined White is a widespread Manxspecies and can be seen anywhere from the coast to thehill-tops though it does favour sheltered damp places; hereit is nectaring on Lavender. The Dark Green Fritillary is theIsland’s only fritillary (there are eight species in Britain) butis doing well here. It heads for thistles as a source of food.

There is another special aspect of butterfly species on theIsland. Most of them have been here for thousands of years– after the last ice-age – and can’t or don’t venture acrossthe sea. Some of the species on these stamps can and dofly to Man. The Painted Lady is a regular summer migrantarriving each year (though in variable numbers) from as faraway as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. It does nothowever survive our winter. The Red Admiral is also aregular migrant (from southern Europe) but until recently ittoo did not over-winter. Now due to a warmer climate it canhibernate to re-emerge on warm sunny days in spring.

And most importantly for the Isle of Man: when many otherof the British Islands are losing species, we have gained twonew species in the past decade. The Comma and theSpeckled Wood were not ‘Manx’ species. Then they wererecorded on the east coast at first in small numbers(presumed to have crossed the sea from Cumbria) and nowmay be seen anywhere. They can be added to the Manx listof butterfly species.

Gail Jeffcoate, Butterfly Recorder, Isle of Man Stephen Jeffcoate, Chairman, Manx Wildlife Trust

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this Butterfly Collection of eight stamps featuring species selected not only for their beauty but also to highlight some

uniquely Manx aspects of their lives.

To celebrate this special occasion, we are issuing aminiature sheet of two stamps, featuring Prince Williamand his bride to be.It will be an exciting day for Britain, which is currently inthe middle of a recession. Billions of people around theworld are expected to watch the ceremony on televisionand thousands will line the streets of London. PrinceWilliam follows in the footsteps of his grandparents bygetting married to Catherine at Westminster Abbey. It wasthere that the Queen married the Duke of Edinburgh and itwas the venue for Princess Diana’s funeral.Kate will travel to the Abbey by a limousine from theQueen’s fleet of cars. Prince William will follow with therest of the royal family. It is one of the few times that afuture princess has not arrived in a fairytale horse-drivencoach. The last royal to travel by car was Sophie Rhys-Joneswhen she married Prince Edward at St George’s Chapel,Windsor, in 1999. The service will take place at the churchat 11am on April 29 and will be conducted by The Dean ofWestminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall. But, in linewith tradition, The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr RowanWilliams, will perform the marriage ceremony and TheBishop of London Richard Chartres, who counselled theprince in the wake of his mother’s death and presided overhis confirmation, will give a ‘very personal’ sermon.Up to 2,200 guests, including heads of state, members ofEuropean royal families and celebrities, are expected to attend.

One hundred golden tickets have been reserved for thepublic, being drawn at random. After the ceremony, thecouple will emerge to a spectacle of marching soldiers, military bands and mounted regiments. They will return toBuckingham Palace in a horse-drawn State Landau coachalong the traditional route for the State Opening ofParliament taking in London landmarks such as The Mall, the Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square. However, in a break with tradition, the Queen will host abuffet reception at Buckingham Palace rather than a ten-course wedding breakfast. It will be a marked difference to her own weddingreception in 1947 when she had a banquet of sole followedby braised partridge and Bombe Glacée. After official photographs the newlyweds are expected toappear on the balcony for an embrace. Their appearancewill coincide with a flypast from William’s RAF colleagues. After retiring for a rest, the couple will attend a privatedinner and dancing at Buckingham Palace, hosted by thePrince of Wales. He is inviting 350 guests to the party, including William and Catherine’s school friends from Etonand Marlborough, contemporaries from St Andrew’sUniversity, and military colleagues. Kate will be the firstcommoner to marry an expected future king for 350 years, since Anne Hyde married the future King James II, in 1660.

The Isle of Man Post Office congratulates Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton on their royal wedding on April 29, 2011, marked by a public holiday.

1935 Senior TT – Woods v GuthrieStanley Woods beat Jimmy Guthrie by four seconds after a masterfultactical stroke during the closing stages of the 1935 Senior. Norton-mounted Guthrie led the race by 26s going into the last lap but histeam, seeing Woods’ Moto Guzzi crew preparing a pit-stop, signalledGuthrie to ease his pace - only for Woods to flash past the pits withoutstopping.Woods set a new lap record to win the race by three seconds.1967 Senior TT – Hailwood v AgostiniGiacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood fought out arguably one of thegreatest races in TT history in the ’67 Senior. Ago - riding an MV Agusta- broke Hailwood’s lap record on the first lap but the Honda riderfought back, with another new record of 108.77mph but was still downby 8.6s. But after the pit stops, there was virtually nothing between themand the closest TT finish ever looked on the cards until Ago’s chainsnapped on the penultimate lap.1976 Senior TT – Herron v WilliamsJohn Williams smashed Mick Grant’s lap record by 27s and took thespeed up by 2.65mph to 112.27mph in a stunning charge on the worksTexaco Heron Suzuki RG500 in the ’76 Senior. Going into the final laphe had a three-minute lead over Yamaha-mounted Tom Herron butWilliams’ Suzuki had to push his out of fuel Suzuki in from Governorsand wound up seventh while Herron won the race. Not a close finishbut a typically dramatic TT race.1977 Sidecar TT Race A – O’Dell/Arthur v Greasley/SkeelsWith the demise of World Championship races at the TT, the Sidecarswere given two races and capacity limits upped to 1000cc. On the first lapof the opening race Dick Greasley and Mick Skeels broke the 100mph lapfrom a standing start on their Yamaha but George O’Dell and KennyArthur - also on a Yamaha-powered outfit, upped the ante and with arecord-breaking 102.80mph final lap, to beat Greasley by 50 seconds.1979 Classic TT – George v HailwoodThe Isle of Man celebrated its millennium in style with an epic, six-lapClassic race in 1979. Alex George led the first four laps, riding a1000cc Honda Britain four-cylinder, four-stroke. Mike Hailwood, riding afour-cylinder, two-stroke Suzuki RG500 fought back and going into thefinal lap led by 0.8s but George was stronger over the Mountain andwon the race by a mere 3.4s – at a new record average of 113mph

1992 Senior TT – Hislop v FogartyCarl Fogarty and Steve Hislop were riding unfamiliar bikes at the TT;Foggy on a Loctite Yamaha OW01, Hizzy on an Abus-backed Nortonrotary. But it didn’t stop them delivering one of the greatest-everSenior showdowns. Hislop broke his own lap record. Fogarty raised itto 123.61mph but Hislop took the race by 4.4s and set a new racerecord of 121.38mph in Norton’s first TT win since 1973, their firstSenior victory since 1961.2000 Formula 1 TT – Dunlop v JeffriesJoey Dunlop was riding Aaron Slight’s WSB Honda SP1 1000cc v-twin.David Jefferies was on the V&M Yamaha R1. Joey revelled in the trickymixture of wet and dry conditions around the 37.73mile course andwhile Jefferies briefly led on the fourth lap, Joey was back in frontthanks to a slick pit stop by the Honda team. Jefferies was eventuallysidelined with engine failure. Joey won the race by almost a minute.2008 Senior – McGuinness v DonaldThe 2008 Senior was the kind of close-fought scrap that defines themodern era of TT racing. Early on there were five riders in contention. On the last lap it came down to two: Cameron Donald, on a RelentlessSuzuki, had five-second lead but John McGuinness was charging on thePadgetts Honda. Donald’s bike sprung an oil leak while McGuinness’ lastlap of 129.517mph ensured him the victory to equal Mike Hailwood’s TTwin tally.2010 Sidecar TT Race 2 – Klaffenbock/Sayle v Holden/WinkleFormer World Sidecar champion Austrian Klaus Klaffenbock andpassenger Dan Sayle made it a Sidecar TT double by winning adramatic second race during the 2010 TT. Thanks to a spirited runover the Mountain on the final lap, Klaffi recorded the fastest race lapat 114.15mph to defeat John Holden and Andy Winkle - clinchingvictory by just 1.12s after being some 10s down. Klaffi was the firstnon-Manx winner of a TT sidecar race since 2003.2010 Superstock TT – Hutchinson v FarquharRyan Farquhar went into the fourth and final lap of the 2010 SuperstockTT with a 5.54s lead but Ian Hutchinson was on a mission and, by the timethey had reached the Bungalow, was up by 1.29s. Hutchinson crossed theline to win the race by 1.3s thanks to a stunning new lap record of130.741mph - the first-ever Superstock 130mph lap.The Padgett’s Hondarider won a record-breaking five solo TT races in the week.

With so many memorable and truly awesome races in TT history, every bike fan has their own favourite ‘most exciting TT race ever’and many a great debate on this important matter has ensued overa pint of ‘Bushey’s Brew’.So, in anniversary year, the Isle of Man Post Office decided enoughwas enough - just which race do the fans think is ‘the Greatest TTRace ever?’From a short list of ten races chosen by an eminent panel of TTexperts we invited the fans to choose a winner. Over 2000 entrieswere received and of those entries the race voted number one - bya huge majority - was the 1992 Senior Race when the late SteveHislop beat Carl Fogarty by just 4 seconds! A truly memorable raceand a worthy winner. We asked second-placed man on the day, Carl Fogarty, to recountthe race…“The strange thing about the build up to the Senior race of the1992 TT was that the two fastest guys there, me and Steve Hislop, had not won a race during the week. There were some other fastriders there, such as Joey and Robert Dunlop and Phil McCallen, but I knew that Steve was the man to beat. He was actually thefastest rider I have ever seen around the TT circuit and if everythingclicked for him on the day, I was going to have my work cut out.As ever we were staying at The Empress Hotel and it’s always animportant moment for a rider to pull the curtains back and seewhat the weather has in store. It was a really nice day, so it was

going to be a fast and dry race. I was in the lead from the start andI knew that it must have been Steve in second place. I was still inthe lead at the end of the second lap by just two seconds.TheNorton was a lot faster in a straight line. In fact my Yamaha wasonly in the top 10 in one of the three speed traps. I think that ispart of the reason it was such a classic race – the fastest bikeversus the best handling bike, even though I was already starting toexperience major problems. The bike was making such a noise that Ihad a massive headache. “The faster I go, the sooner I can get offthis bike,” I thought.Steve had reversed the lead on the third lap and pulled into thelead by a few seconds on the fourth lap, despite the fact that I waspulling back time in the pits because the Norton took on morefuel. But somehow I managed to pull five seconds back on the finallap going over the Mountain section, where I was a bit strongerthan Steve, even if my bike wasn’t that strong at that point. I hadstarted number 4, with Steve number 19, so when I crossed theline I could hear the commentator counting down before Stevecrossed the line to win by four seconds. I can honestly say thatnobody could have ridden the Yamaha, in the state it was in, anyfaster on that day.I waited to tell him that I had got the lap record until we were onthe rostrum. He was gutted because he always wanted to be thefastest man at the TT.That record stood for an amazing seven years, one of the proudest achievements of my career.”

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this miniature sheet to celebrate the TT race voted the greatest ever by bike fans in the

100th anniversary year of the TT Mountain Course.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 10th May 2011

Isle of Man Post office is pleased to present a set of 6 stamps inhonour of a former Liverpooltelegram Boy who became the Island’s most influential cartoonist.

cartoons by

‘Dusty’ MillerBetween 1933 and 1962 newspaper cartoons by Harold‘Dusty’ Miller (1898-1964) captured political and socialissues in a way that text alone could not. Some cartoonswould remain topical for generations. Occasionally hebordered on morale-raising or conscience-prickingpropaganda but mostly visualised public sentiment. Millerwon a scholarship to Liverpool School of Art when 13.Financially unable to take advantage of it, he became atelegram message boy, at 14, for Liverpool Post Office.

Later, in a World War 1 trench, he designed a 1917Christmas card which the Postmen’s Federation adoptedfor sending to postal workers in the armed forces. In1919 Miller joined Liverpool City Police and designed apolice Roll of Honour. Health considerations, however, led to him moving with his Manx wife to the Isle of Manin 1926 and becoming advertising manager and artist forthe Isle of Man Times and Examiner newspapers.Cartoons had to be produced to meet the newspapers’weekly deadlines and were often drawn at home.

In 1953 Dusty’s artistry in oils and water colours led tohis being founder chairman of the Isle of Man ArtSociety. His dream of an annual Easter art exhibition wasrealised in 1963, one year before his death, aged 66.

Ten years later, the founder of Isle of Man Post Officeand former work colleague, Victor Kneale, wouldsuggest that, had Dusty been alive, he could havedesigned commercial postage stamps. In fact, he hadproduced two designs in about 1938 and 1953 whenthere were public campaigns for them.

37p - the southern hundred"Thrills galore when motor-cycle racing came to theSouth" for the first time in July 1955. The idea had comeabout when alternatives to the TT were discussed in 1953.

38p - I’m staking my claim on the sandsat douglasDusty's design for a postcard in the early 1950s, whenDouglas beach was a major holiday feature, was neveractually published.

68p - national expenses fenceThis image from 1955 reflects the relentless rise in thecalls on the public purse.

76p - will uncle sam provide the ‘third leg’?By September 1940 the Manx people had raised enoughmoney by voluntary donations to pay for two Spitfiresand it was hoped that a third one might be funded by(Manx) Americans.

11op - Bob a job weekLike Bob-a-Job week the large baby in the scout’s armsreflects the falling value of ‘the Bob’ against increasedGovernment costs in 1954.

165p - well councillor - did you votefor evening meetings? The Douglas Town Council had voted to hold some oftheir meetings in the evening, perhaps to the dismay ofsome of their wives!

Miscellaneous Tokens & Checks M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGIThe farthing, halfpenny and penny regal coins of Victoria, dated1839, were the last to be minted for the Isle of Man until theintroduction of the decimal coins in 1971. British coins were thenthe only currency in general circulation - and the few odd Irishcoins that found their way to the Island!

There was, however, a special issue of non-circulating gold coinsissued in 1965 for the bicentenary of the Act of Revestment(when the Island was sold to the British Crown in 1765 for£70,000)

The 1965 Act of Revestment gold coins, £5, £1 and £1/2

Towards the end of 1970 the Isle of Man Government decided toissue a crown (face value five shillings) believing it would be thelast one struck in the sterling area before decimalization. It wasmade generally available for collectors through the Manx banksand a number did find their way into circulation. These Crowncoins were struck by the Royal Mint in London and featured thetail-less Manx cat.

Obverse and reverse of the 1970 Manx Cat Crown

After the long period of using British coins, the Isle of ManGovernment passed an Act to introduce new coins when the

British Isles converted to the decimal system of currency. Provisionwas made in the Manx Decimal Coin Act of 1970 for a distinctiveIsland series of circulating coins. Six coins in the denominations ofhalfpenny, penny, 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p were prepared and releasedon the 20th October 1971.

All decimal coins issued for circulation in the Isle of Man bear thehead of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

A new set of coins, with different designs, was issued in 1976.

All coins (1/2p, 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 50p) dated 1972, 1973 and 1974are scarce. Pobjoy Mint produced only 1000 of each coin in thoseyears and they were despatched as samples to the Isle of ManGovernment in the hope of obtaining a regular order for coins.Due to the fact that there were enough coins (all dated 1971) incirculation at that time, including all the British coins, no morewere issued until 1975. Those coins dated 1972, 1973 and 1974were put into circulation along with large quantities of newlyminted coins dated 1975. When it was realised that these coinshad been released, many collectors, including the general public, hunted for the elusive dates. Only the pennies and 2p coins arestill legal tender and it is, therefore, unlikely that any of thesecoins now remain in circulation.

Further details of the Island’s decimal coins will be featured infuture issues of Stamp and Coin News.

The 1971 Isle of Man decimal setof coins. There were 495,000 halfpenniesminted and 100,000 of each ofthe other denominations.
