Dot’s Message Chaghteraght Dot

WELCOME

Presentation to the Lord Mayor of the

City of London

n February, I was privileged to attend the UCI Track Cycling World Cup

event which was held at the new LondonOlympic Velodrome in London, christened’the Pringle’ for its resemblance to that wellknown brand of potato crisp. Theatmosphere inside the velodrome waselectric, which bodes well for this summer’sLondon Olympic Games. The countdown tothe opening ceremony continues – 127 daysto go as I write this message. Just beforemy visit, the Isle of Man welcomed the LordMayor of the City London, Alderman DavidWootton to our shores and our ChiefMinister, Hon Allan Bell MHK and PostOffice Chairman Geoff Corkish MBE MHKpresented presented the Lord Mayor with aframed set of our 2012 Olympic stampswhich were designed by Sir Paul Smith.Alderman Wootton was verycomplimentary about the stamps and, as akeen rower, was particularly taken with therowing stamp.

In addition to the Olympics, London will becelebrating Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant

a major part of the entertainment. We willbe issuing a Thames Regatta miniature sheetfor the event and Maxine Cannon from theBureau will be going to London to witnessthis floating celebration of Her Majesty's 60year reign.

Back in the Isle of Man we are building upto the TT Races which will coincide with theOlympic baton arriving on 2nd June. Thenames of the lucky Manx baton carriers havenow been announced and the route for thebaton will include a visit to the TTGrandstand.

Finally, I would like to sincerely recommendour Diamond Jubilee Special Folder. Wehave quite a reputation for our folders and Ihave to say this one is a truly fitting tributeto Her Majesty the Queen.

Local historian Stan Basnett writes:

The principal Lighthouses around the Isle of Man aremaintained by the Commissioners of Northern Lights andare not the only lighthouses around the Island. Eachharbour being protected by minor lights erected on theextremities of piers and breakwaters many of which arealso being fitted with an audible device such as a horn orbell for use in fog.

When built their purpose was vital to vessels enteringharbour at night or in restricted visibility. Theirimportance has since diminished through the use ofmodern equipment such as radar and GPS. They stillhowever have a useful part to play as an aid to navigation.

Prior to the Revestment Act of 1765 the responsibility forthe Island's harbours lay with the Duke of Atholl and theIsland's Government. After that date the harbours cameunder the control of the Admiralty and the Crown.Ultimately they reverted to the Isle of Man HarbourCommissioners and still remain the responsibility of theManx Government through the Department ofInfrastructure.

C A S T L E T OWN The outer harbour at Castletown isprotected by a small breakwater on the end of which is asuperb limestone built lighthouse. It carries an inscriptionthat clearly states that it was built in AD 1849 at whichtime Castletown was the capital of the Island and theharbour was more important than now. The lighthousedisplays an occulting red light every 15 seconds and isvisible for 8 miles. The approach to the inner harbourcarries a smaller “pepper pot” lighthouse displaying anocculting red light every 4 seconds visible for 4 miles.

DOUGLAS This stamp depicts the lighthouse on the endof the Battery Pier at Douglas, which was completed in

1876 and formed the outer breakwater for the harbour. The light exhibited alternate white and red lights every15 seconds and had a bell fog signal of one ring every 2seconds. When a new breakwater was completed in 1983a new light was erected on an unpretentious metal mastand as a result the original light now displays aconsiderably reduced quick flashing red light.

L A X E Y The harbour at Laxey owes its origin to the leadmining industry. Responsibility for it passed to the IOMHarbour Commissioners in 1890 who then commencedwork on the construction of a breakwater which wascompleted in 1893. The stone built lighthouse on theseaward end exhibits an occulting green light every 3seconds visible for 7 miles. The smaller inner light on theend of Rowe's Pier displays an occulting red light every 3seconds also visible for 7 miles.

P E E L Peel harbour is protected by five lights and theone depicted on this stamp is the oldest and located onthe outer breakwater which was completed in 1896. It isan elegant octagonal cast iron structure erected on theraised head at the extremity of the breakwater. It displaysa white occulting light every 7 seconds and is visible for11 miles. It did have a fog signal in the form of a bellgiving 4 rings every 12 seconds.

R A M S E Y The harbour entrance at Ramsey has achannel trained between two piers. The South Pier wasextended in 1876 and the stamp depicts the hexagonalcast iron lighthouse erected at its seaward end. It displaysan occulting red light every 5 seconds and is visible for 8miles. As the channel is effectively a navigable channelthe North Pier exhibits a green light as an aid to shipsentering the port. In the background is the RamseyQueen’s Pier, now disused, which was built as a low waterlanding pier.

The Isle of Man Post Office ispleased to present HarbourLights, a set of six stampsdepicting minor lighthousesaround the Isle of Man. Wecommissioned local artist TraceyDean to prepare new paintingswhich truly capture the eleganceof the familiar landmarks.

The Isle of Man Post Office presents a set of six stamps to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the loss of RMS Titanic after striking an iceberg. It is one of thedeadliest maritime disasters in peacetime history, morethan 1,500 passengers and crew died in the early hours of 15th April 1912.

Captained by Edward John Smith, one of the company’smost respected and experienced officers, and billed as thelargest and most luxurious ship in the world, the Titanic wason her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, whentragedy struck.

The trip had begun five days earlier when 914 passengersboarded the liner with 884 members of crew, including asquash professional, swimming pool lifeguards, Turkish bathattendants and a chaperone for single women in third class –four firemen missed the sailing because they were in the pub.

First class passengers lost included John Jacob Astor,Benjamin Guggenheim and Macy’s owner Isidor Strauss.Chairman of the White Star Line, Joseph Bruce Ismay, survived the tragedy They marvelled at the grand staircase, which ran through six decks, the sumptuous staterooms, oakand mahogany panelling and luxurious fitted carpets, beforebeing escorted to their rooms by stewards.

Second and third class passengers entered through a corridorand were directed to their rooms. They includedschoolteacher Lawrence Beesley, who wrote an account ofthe disaster and seven-year-old schoolgirl Eva Hart, whoselife was saved after her mother had a premonition andrefused to sleep.

At midday Titanic steamed into the Channel and headed for Cherbourg, where a further 274 passengers joined thevoyage and then on to Queenstown, in southern Ireland, where they picked up a further 136 passengers and the Irishmail. At 1.30pm on 11th April, Titanic headed into theAtlantic for what was expected to be a six-day voyage.

The first class passengers enjoyed lavish facilities. Thecatering was exquisite: on 14th April, the ten-course dinnerincluded oyster, consommé, poached salmon, filet mignon, lamb, duckling or sirloin of beef, punch romaine, roastsquab, asparagus, paté de foie gras and Waldorf pudding.

But for some, it was to be their last supper. At 11.39pmlook-out, Fred Fleet, spotted the iceberg looming in thedark. He rang the bell three times and telephoned thebridge. First Officer Murdoch immediately gave the order‘hard-a-starboard’ and signalled the engine room ‘stop’ butthe liner was cruising at 22 knots and within a minute it hadstruck the iceberg. Captain Smith rushed to the bridge. After inspecting the damage, it was clear that the ship wasdoomed: although there was only a small hole, the iceberghad buckled the steel plates and sheered the rivets belowthe waterline; water was spilling over the bulkheads, flooding the first six compartments and weighing the boxdown.

At 12.05am, the order was given to uncover the lifeboats. But the operation was disorganised. Eighteen lifeboats werelaunched – the first at 12.45am; the last at 2.05am. Tenminutes after the last lifeboat was launched, the bridge wasunder water and the forward funnel collapsed. Within fiveminutes the Titanic gave a sudden lurch and threw the tworemaining lifeboats into the sea. There was a rumbling likethunder from the bowels of the ship and at 2.20am thelights went out and the Titanic sank, plunging more than1,500 people, including Captain Smith, into the icy sea.

But it was the heroism of the band that will always beremembered. As the stern began to rise, violinist Wallace W Hartley, who was band leader, told the other sevenmusicians they could stand down. But they remained. All of them sacrificed their lives for their courage.

From the moment King George VI died peacefully in his sleep atSandringham House, on February 6, 1952, the Queen became one ofthe world’s most popular leaders, travelling to all corners of theglobe on Commonwealth and State visits. The news of her father’sdeath was broken to her by the Duke of Edinburgh when she wasstaying at their royal residence Sagana Lodge, at the foothills ofMount Kenya, on their way back from a tour of Australia and NewZealand. It was a sign of things to come. Since then the Queen hasset a record for travelling more than any other monarch in history –she has made over 325 overseas visits in the 60 years since she wascrowned.

It was in 1947 that the then Princess Elizabeth made her frst overseasvisit to South Africa. But it was not until fve years later that she tookover her father’s mantle. She was proclaimed Queen in London onFebruary 8, 1952 – two days after her father’s death – and in the Isleof Man on February 12. During her reign she has broken newground – she was the first British monarch to visit China, in 1986,Russia, in 1994, Brunei and Malaysia, in 1998, and Korea, in 1999.

One of her most memorable visits was the six-day state visit toSouth Africa in 1995 – the first since the end of apartheid and herfirst visit to the country as a new bride. She toured Australia andSingapore for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, was present at theCommonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Uganda thefollowing year and squeezed in a state visit to America tocommemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement in2007.

But it was last year that she made her most historic visit when sheundertook a four-day tour of Ireland, becoming the first Britishmonarch to visit Britain’s nearest neighbour since her grandfatherGeorge V was greeted by cheering crowds in Dublin a century ago.In one of her most politically signifcant speeches, she acknowledged

the ‘sad and regrettable’ history between Britain and Ireland. Closerto home, the Queen, who has over 600 patronages and charities, hasvisited most corners of Britain and is greeted by vast crowds as sheopens buildings, tours schools, hospitals and voluntary organisationsand meets local dignitaries. All of them will be cheering for her onher Diamond Jubilee.

A jubilee of significance; the thoughts of local Manx historianRobert Kelly

Not just Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee this year but whatsixty years of the second Elizabethan era has meant. There is somuch to cheer in it: so much achievement that has totally changedthe Island. Television has transformed the Island’s view of the world;computers, the speed and ease in which we do things. The ending offood rationing in July 1954 ushered in the days of unprecedentedaffuence: when perceived poverty would once have seemed greatriches. In 1955, when the Queen came to the Island for the first ofsix visits, the Island began its swift emergence as a majorinternational finance centre; a substantial reduction in income taxmarking its first step. Just five years after the Queen’s accession to thethrone in 1952, the space age began with the Russians launching theworld’s first man-made satellite, the Sputnik. It would have seemedinconceivable then that within a lifetime the Island would emerge asbeing such a signifcant player in space research it would be regardedas being one of the likeliest communities to put a man on the moon.Yet it has. At a time when the Manx resident population was just48,000 and shrinking it must have seemed impossible also thatwithin that same lifetime it would be 84,000, cosmopolitan andgrowing…a place so independently-minded that it would issue itsown passports, coinage and, yes, its own postage stamps too! It allamounts to so much to celebrate: a time not without its problemsand sadness, perhaps, but, overall, one of unprecedented success.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this miniature sheet tocommemorate the Queen’s reign.

Many people are discovering the fascination of collectinglittle bits of yesteryear. In the Isle of Man the range ofcollectables is enormous: from postage stamps, coins, books and postcards to china, prints, maps, jewellery -even scent and liquor bottles, old pipes, amusinglydecorated handkerchiefs and brass buttons.

Many date back to the late Victorian and Edwardian touristboom when quality tourist souvenirs and “fairings” - prizesat fun fair competitions, even Tynwald Fair - were producedin large numbers. Manx “fairings” include a model of LaxeyWheel which lifts to reveal a pin tray underneath.

In 40 years of collecting, Manx couple, Robert and LindaKelly, have amassed a wide range of Manx memorabilia. Weasked them to share with us some of their favourites:

The Postman at MaugholdThis stamp depicts a Royal Doulton spittoon decorated withManx scenes including the Maughold Cross and delivery ofmail at Maughold by a rural postman. Plates and other itemsare decorated with similar views. Twenty years ago RoyalDoulton had no record of having produced the range. Someyears after being approached by Mr and Mrs Kelly, however,an archivist found a set of transfers.

The Manx Racing CarThis stamp shows a Crown Devon model of an early Manxracing car of no specific manufacture. The three legsemblem acts as its starting handle. The modelcommemorates the “Manx International Motorcar Race” -probably the 1914 Car TT which attracted entries fromBritain, Germany, Belgium and France.

Ginger - The Manx CatThis stamp depicts a commemorative plate, produced in1962 by Kettlesprings Kilns Alliance, Ohio, USA; designedby Mrs Alexander Elsin (nee Dorothy Mylrea) for sale as afund-raiser for the 1963 North American Manx Association

Convention in Chicago. It features the Internationalchampion Manx cat “Ginger-Manx of Glen Orry” (aChicago cattery) playing Ellan Vannin on a piano. Gingerfounded a line of champion Manx cats.

The Manx Dog - Prince Toby OrryThis stamp portrays a model by Willow Art China,Staffordshire, of the famous three-legged Manx dog, PrinceToby Orry. Born in Douglas on 25th July 1907, he waspromoted for many years among gullible tourists as the lastof a breed of three-legged dogs which inspired the Island’sthree legs emblem.

Archibald Knox JewelThis stamp features an enamelled silver Founder’s Jeweldesigned by Archibald Knox for the Conister Lodge ofFreemasons. The illustration is of the Tower of Refuge onConister Rock in Douglas Bay. Mr Kelly acquired the jewelin 1979, the year his biography of Sir William Hillary, founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution andinstigator of the construction, was published. Believing it tobe a women’s item, he gave it to his wife as a memento ofthe book’s publication. Only later did he discover thejewel’s Masonic origins.

The Manx CottageThis stamp depicts a Goss china Manx cottage. When anight light is inserted through a hole in the back and is lit,the cottage glows.

What is being produced now that will be collectable in future- other than the obvious postage stamps, coins and decorativephone cards? Mr and Mrs Kelly suggest Manx Christmas cards- designed, printed and published locally, many for thebenefit of local charities.

This fascinating set also serves as an affectionate tribute toLinda Kelly who passed away last year – we respectfullydedicate it to her with our gratitude.

Decimal Coin Designs introduced in 1984M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGIA further set of new designs for Manx decimal coinswas introduced in 1984. As with the 1980 set, they alsoreflected many aspects of Island life and its history. The£5, 20p and £1 coins had been added to the series in1981, 1982 and 1983 respectively. These will be describedin more detail in the next Stamp and Coin News.

1/2p Coin: The wild fuchsia shown on this coin grows inabundance in the Manx hedgerows. It is often regardedas the alternative to the Manx National flower.

1p Coin: This coin depicts a cormorant; a coastal birdfrequently seen along the Manx shores, particularlyaround the Ayres at the northernmost tip of the Island.

2p Coin: A single peregrine falcon within a garnishedshield represents the traditional Manx tribute to theSovereign at the coronation.

5p coin: The common ragwort, or cushag, on the 5pcoin is recognised as the official Manx national flower.

10p Coin: A symbolic representation of the ManxLoaghtan ram, a rare breed of sheep with four horns.

20p Coin: This coin depicts three Manx herrings on adecorative shield. Herrings are traditionally oak-smoked,usually at Peel, to produce the world famous Manxkipper.

50p Coin: The Viking longship represented on the 50pcoin is in the style of Lymphad, an ancient vesselpropelled by oars and having one mast with a sail furled, which first appeared in Manx heraldry in the 10thCentury.

£1 Coin: Second coin in the series of Manx townCoats-of-Arms, it depicts the Arms of Castletown. Thisseries will be explained in the next issue.

£5 Coin: This magnificent design of a Manx Knight onHorseback shows the horse in full gallop. The Knighthimself is brandishing a sword prominently decoratedwith the Manx Triskeles.

Obverse: All the 1984 coins show the first profileportrait of Her Majesty by Arnold Machin, as used onthe first Manx decimal coins of 1971.

Your Olympic Year Starts Here…Isle of Man Stamps & Coins is pleased to present a most prestigious stamp issue, inspired by the London2012 Olympic Games. Designed by internationally renowned British designer Sir Paul Smith, this veryspecial set of stamps went on sale at 00.01 a.m. on January 1st 2012 at the Island’s main Post Office inDouglas – a ‘world first’. We are hugely honoured and thrilled that Sir Paul Smith agreed to design our Olympic collection. He aspired to design a truly positive and colourful collection with a strong graphic style of design –something we certainly feel he has achieved with this iconic set, we hope you will agree.

Sir Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was accidental. His ambitionwas to become a professional racing cyclist until aged seventeen yearshe was involved in a road accident. Three months in hospital followedand when he came out he knew he wanted to do something creative. With the encouragement from his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (nowwife), and a small amount of savings, he opened a tiny shop inNottingham in 1970.He started to take evening classes, studying tailoring and by 1976 Paulhad shown his first menswear collection in Paris.Today there are fourteen collections including ready-to-wear for menand women, accessories, shoes and junior. Paul Smith has seventeenshops in the UK and sells to sixty six countries in the rest of the worldwith shops in Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Korea, Kuwait,U.A.E. and Japan. Paul continues to be an integral part of thecompany; he is both designer and chairman and is continually involvedin every aspect of the business.

We hope to do his achievements justice with our stamp issue!
