The most interesting aspect of the coin is the presence of pseudo-Arabic inscriptions in the margins on obverse and reverse. 47 Late Medieval Central India, Tomars of Gwalior, Copper Tanka, 9.67g, crude legend on both sides. Extremely fine, rare.

These coins form a long series of progressively debased billon and copper Tankas and fractions thereof, which have typological links with the coins of late Delhi Sultans like the Sayyads and Lodhis. The legends they bear are very crude but sometimes show traces of recognizable words. As some such words appear to correspond to those in the genealogy of the Tomars of Gwalior (c. 15th-16th century AD) the series is tentatively

53 Sikandar Shah, Silver Tanka, 10.83g, Mulk Nawalistan Mint (Not listed in G&G). Very fine+, extremely rare.

A mint named 'ChawalistanurfArsahKamru' has been recorded for this ruler. Coins of the type offered here were recently discovered in a small hoard and they appear to have the mint-name inscribed as 'Nawalistan' instead of 'Chawalistan'. Since this appears to have happened due to the engraver missing a small part of the stroke, the cataloguer believes that the variation is a result of an engraving error. No such place is known to exist and the word also doesn't mean anything. The type, however, is new for this mint and remains unlisted in G&G.

This coin is struck from the dies usually employed for striking Gold mohurs and it weighs a little less than a half rupee. Exactly what prompted the issue of such a coin is not certain but there are a few other odd instances (like square rupees) known with the similar die design. It is plausible that they were struck as 'show'-pieces or 'trial strikes'.

96 Akbar, Silver Rupee, 11.32g, Anharwala Patan Mint, AH 984 (KM# 80.3). Uncleaned, very fine, very rare.

The mint-name on these coins is very long – 'Dar Shahr Anharwala Patan' – but on this coin the word 'Anharwala' is nearly fully visible. It is also sometimes read as 'Naharwala'. Both are Farsi versions of 'Anahillawada', the name of the old capital of Gujarat. The coins were struck for a brief time during the Gujarat Campaign of Akbar, probably to supply money to troops fighting further south.

155 Jahangir, Silver, Noor Afsan/ Nisar, 0.50g, Lahore Mint, AH 1034. Patinated, very fine for type, extremely rare.

Largesse coins were struck to order for scattering to deflect the 'evil eye' where the king was exposed to one, in events which demanded his public appearance like court rituals or processions. They usually conform to a denomination standard, but not necessarily so – sometimes they were struck at random weight depending on the quantity of metal consigned for the purpose and the number of coins needed. This appears to be one such coin, where the weight, 0.50 gm comes close to 1/20th rupee but it not exactly the same. In AH1034, Noorjahan was the effective ruler of the kingdom and Jahangir had absolved himself of duties of governance.

The middle of 1770's when this coin is struck saw a lot of political turmoil in the region of Delhi. It is possible that rupees in the name of 'Shah Jahanabad' were struck at other places than Delhi during this period by different political authorities. Although it is impossible to say who issued this coin, it is conspicuous by a symbol of '4-pointed Star' in middle line on obverse. It is different to the two major symbols – umbrella (Mughal) and floral sprig (Rohilla).

Junagarh

400 'Hatakeshwara Sahi' Silver Kori, 4.23g, Obv: Devnagari legend “Shri Hatakeshwaraya Namah”, Rev: Devnagari legend “Shri Raghunathaya Namah”. Extremely fine, exceedingly rare. This remarkable 'coin' was first published by G P Taylor in Numismatic Supplement XX, 1912. After a mention by Codrington in 1895 of

this kind of Kori, Taylor was able to trace a solitary specimen in Junagarh Museum – which to him was the only known piece. The obverse legend refers to 'Hatakeshwara' or the 'Golden Lord', a name of Shiva, and a form that is particularly revered by Nagar

Brahmins of Gujarat. In 1784, Raghunathji Amarji, belonging to that cast was appointed the Diwan of Junagarh State by Nawab Hamid

Khan Babi after his father the former Diwan was murdered. He was made a Diwan for life in 1811 by Nawab Bhadur Khan II and the

office was offered to him in hereditary capacity. He remained the Diwan for more than 40 years, retiring in 1816/17 after the Nawab lost

faith him. He died soon after in 1819. Hatakeshwara was his 'favoured deity' or 'Ishta-Devata', and the reference to 'Raghunath' on

reverse is no doubt to him, although in the garb of a divine salutation.Taylor was hesitant to regard the piece he published as a 'coin', but a couple more pieces are now known and they all are struck to the

weight of a 'Kori'. Perhaps they were a ceremonial issue but there appears to be no doubt to regard them as coins. Taylor himself thinks

that they might have been issued as 'patterns' by Ranchhodji, the younger brother of Raghunathji, before he issued the 'Diwanshahi'

Koris of Junagarh, with the word 'Shri Diwan' written on them.Sold ` ................ Estimate: ` 4,00,000-4,50,000
