Dear friends,

It is with pleasure I am writing the latest introduction to Stamps & Coin News - we are seeing longer days on the Island and the countryside is ablaze with hosts of golden daffodils in the hedgerows and gardens, spring is definitely in the air.

We have some fresh starts in the department too. New to us are Sue, Jan and Maureen who prepare your stock items and undertake a lot of the packing. Jade has joined us for a few hours from POHQ each week to prepare our Welcome Letters for new customers. If you have any friends or family who you think would like a complimentary pack please don’t hesitate to drop Jade a line at our usual address or email [email protected]. It was with sadness we wished Andy Sykes a long and happy retirement on the 4th April. Andy is an avarian so what better gift than a Jeremy Paul original painting of his favourite species a Pekin Robin.

Another departure was our former Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office Stamps & Coins Geoff Corkish MBE MLC. Geoff has been extremely supportive of Stamps and Coins since his appointment by Tynwald in 2011. Always on hand to promote our brand and

happily sign certificates for our limited editions. His successor is Graham Cregeen MHK, who represents the constituents of Malew in the south of the Island. Graham knows the Post Office well so you can be sure it’s very much business as usual.

Our new issues cover a Millennium of Manxmen playing their part in history books from Brodir in Clontarf to Archibald Knox and finally Hector Duff who records his D-Day memories and let’s not forget the Manx Ark project aimed at securing the future of endangered fauna. It all goes to show that for a small Island our influence is far-reaching and long may it continue.

Archibald Knox Celtic Style Exhibition and Stamp Launch EventOn April 4, representatives from the Post Office attended the launch event for the Manx National Heritage Celtic Style exhibition which will be held at the House of Manannan, Peel for the next 12 months. During the launch speeches, Isle of Man Post Office Chairman Graham Cregeen presented a framed set of our Archibald Knox Stamps launched on the same day to Peter Reid of Lloyds Bank. Lloyds and Manx National Heritage collaborated with us on the stamp issue.

April 2014 sees the 150th anniversary of the birth of Archibald Knox – the internationally renowned Manx artist and designer for Liberty & Co and leading exponent of the ‘British Celtic Revival’ design style in the early 20th century. Although now most well known for his silver and pewter designs for Liberty, to his Manx contemporaries in the 1910s and 1920s he would have been better known as a graphic designer producing designs for everything from illustrations for a book of Manx fairy tales and several of the Island’s war memorials to the cover of a theatre programme and cheques for a Manx grocer. Whatever his designs were used for and whether cast in silver, carved in stone or printed on paper, they all shared a common motif – the intricate interlace designs and knots that show Knox’s lifelong fascination with the carved Norse and Celtic stone crosses that had surrounded him from his childhood onwards.

Knox was a prolific artist and designer whose great body of work contains several iconic examples of early 20th century design but there is one piece that can be considered to be his greatest masterpiece and his most personal work of art. This is the illuminated manuscript of the Deer’s Cry (or St Patrick’s Breastplate), a lorica or prayer of protection traditionally ascribed to St Patrick and said to have been written by him in the 5th century, although now thought to date from the 8th century. The traditional Old Irish prayer was translated into English in the 19th century and became popular as a hymn. It was one of the English translations that Knox chose to reproduce as an illuminated manuscript. Each line of the prayer is illustrated using a combination

of his highly distinctive and intricate interlace and calligraphy to produce a unique design, where the choice of colours and overall design illustrate both the words and meaning of the prayer. Examples of this can be seen in His Baptism where the interlaced letters create a pool of clear blue water and in the words His Burial where the letters are woven into an interlace pattern, that on further observation appears to look more like the linen threads of a shroud. A line of the prayer, An Invocation to the Trinity, contains a central design of a shamrock, illustrating the tradition that St Patrick is said to have used a shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity.

The intricate interlace and calligraphy can mean that the lettering is almost impossible to read on first glance but by taking time to appreciate the designs, one can discover (and uncover) the hidden words within. Knox had a strong Anglo-Catholic faith and the Deer’s Cry can be seen both as a work of religious meditation in its production and something to meditate on as each page was completed.

Knox worked on the Deer’s Cry for several years, although he appears not to have been satisfied with the early work that he had produced whilst working as a parcel censor at the Knockaloe Civilian Internment Camp during the First World War. He continued working on the project throughout the 1920s and 1930s, while also working full-time as an art teacher and a commercial designer, but sadly his great

masterpiece was not to be completed before his death in 1933. The Deer’s Cry had been displayed just before his death by the Knox Guild (a group of his ex-art students) in London and it was as a bequest by Miss Winifred Tuckfield (Mrs Broun-Morison), one of Knox’s ex-pupils, on behalf of the Knox Guild, that the Deer’s Cry was presented to the Manx Museum in 1957.

Battle of Clontarf

The Norse trading-port of Dublin had become a powerful city-state, and the Danes were making incursions into other areas.

As a young man, Brian Boru had driven them back from his home territory in Munster, and he had gone on to become high king of Ireland, bringing peace and stability and encouraging commerce and learning.

But by 1014 he was in his seventies, and facing a coalition of forces built by the Norse king of Dublin, Sigtrygg Silkbeard, who was backed by his uncle, the king of Leinster. Sigtrygg brought in Earl Sigurd of Orkney whose mother was the daughter of an Irish king, and Brodir, a warrior with twenty ships in the Isle of Man. Others from Man went to join Brian.

The times were unstable, with a Danish conquest of England under way. Ireland, with the rich trade-route through the Irish Sea, was a tempting target. Learning of the forces that were gathering, Brian Boru moved on Dublin.

The city was then on the south of the Liffey. Brian took his army further north, beyond the Tolka, and thus had two rivers between him and any surprise breakout from Dublin. But on 22 April, a Norse fleet, seemingly setting sail for home, made its way in the darkness to the beaches of Clontarf, north of the Tolka.

An Irish chronicle says that a high tide enabled the ships to be brought ashore at sunrise. Confirmation of its accuracy came in 1861 from an Irish scholar’s calculation of the high tide on the Clontarf shore that morning – 5.30 am and very close to first light.

In the clash of armies the flanks of the Norse invaders were gradually pushed back. Their centre was led by Earl Sigurd himself, his standard a raven banner woven by his mother Eithne. It was said to bring victory, though death to its bearer.

But the Irish centre under Brian Boru’s eldest son Murchad surged forward, and fierce fighting raged around the standard. One bearer was killed, then

another, and no one would carry the banner. The earl ripped it from its staff and put it under his own clothing; and soon he too fell.

The Norse ranks broke and they looked for a way back to the sea. But the tide had scattered their ships, and some tried to swim across the Tolka while others, trapped, fought to the death.

An Icelandic saga tells how amidst the chaos, one man stopped and tied his shoe-thong. The Irish caught up with him and asked why. ‘Because,’ he explained, ‘I cannot reach home tonight, for my home is out in Iceland.’ And they spared his life.

But several thousand men from each side died, amongst them Brian Boru himself. Unwilling to fight on Good Friday, he had spent the day in prayer. Brodir cut him down, then was captured and killed.

Brian’s son and heir Murchad was mortally wounded as the day ended, in a death struggle with a Norseman, and the king of Leinster also fell.

Sigtrygg of Dublin survived, but the dream of Norse dominance had gone. Brian Boru’s death left a power vacuum, but he had achieved what he sought. Ireland had not been conquered.

‘King Brian fell with victory and glory,’ says one saga. The Irish chroniclers mourned Brian Boru and the years of peace that he had brought to Ireland. ‘He was a hero in place of a hero,’ said one, ‘and he was valour after valour.’

Manx Loaghtan SheepThe iconic Manx Loaghtan is native to the Isle of Man and is our signature rare breed. It normally has dark brown wool, though is often born black; and the name means “brown mouse.” It may have two, four, or even six horns. It is regarded as a “primitive” sheep, related to pre-historic breeds that lived on the islands of Scotland. Its primary value is as a meat producer; the fully-flavoured flesh is considered a delicacy and can be savoured at a handful of Island restaurants. Manx Loaghtan meat is protected under the European Protected Designation of Origin scheme like certain wines, champagne and cheeses. The Manx is the closest surviving relative of the Jersey sheep, which sadly fell into extinction many years ago.

Northern Dairy Shorthorn CattleOnce the most common cattle on the Isle of Man, these iconic red and white beasts have dwindled in numbers until today there are less than 50 viable females left in the world. There were none left at all until the winter of 2012 when seven animals were imported from England, with a further 11 to follow in 2013. An important herd lives close to Grenaby in the south of the Island where they are being intensively bred to increase genetic stocks; the three heifers shown here are pictured at Clypse Mooar farm near Onchan, shortly after their arrival.

Cotswold SheepNative to the Cotswold hills in England, this lovely animal is a dual purpose breed good for long wool and delicious, mildly flavoured meat. The Cotswold is a hardy sheep with good survival rates once dried off after birth, and the ability to thrive in places where weaker breeds would not eke out an existence. Cotswold wool is particularly popular with spinners as, when hand-combed, all the fibres can be pointed in the same direction, meaning no “itch” for the wearer and an effect rather like mohair. Etymologically, the Cotswold hills were named for the sheep, rather than the other way around; cottes-wealds in Anglo Saxon means exposed hills with cotes (solidly built folds for sheep).

Exmoor PoniesFewer than 300 breeding mares survive of this mountain breed, well adapted to survive in cold and wet weather. Many are living in a more or less wild state on Exmoor, where they are easily seen at the roadside by visitors. They have been present in Great Britain for thousands of years, but nearly became extinct in the late 1940s as a result of soldiers using them for target practice!

Paul Davis, supporter of protecting rare breeds, writes…Commercial pressures have led to the extinction of many breeds of British farm animals. When a breed is allowed to die out, never to return to our farms, we will never know what we have lost. We will never know what qualities, immunities, medical or edible products are gone for ever. Since the 1970s, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust has worked to preserve traditional breeds and prevent them from extinction; and no breed has been lost since it was formed. The Isle of Man’s rare breeds farmers are an important part of the effort, establishing a “Noah’s Ark” of breeding animals unlikely to be affected by an epidemic in Great Britain or Ireland, and providing a valuable research base for some of the world’s rarest beasts.

Celebrating100 Years of the Southern District Agricultural Society

The Manx Ark


In answer to farmers’ calls for a southside show, the Southern District Agricultural Society was created, and its fi rst Show was a resounding success. Although the outbreak of war prevented another Show for fi ve years, from 1920 onwards it was well supported and the Southern Show evolved into the well loved event it is today, 100 years later.

The breeds exhibited at the Show have typifi ed agricultural trends. Until after the Second World War, much of the showing stock would be native

breeds such as Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus cattle. Shropshire, Suffolk, Kerry Hill, and even Lonk and Derbyshire Gritstone were popular in the sheep sections. Pig breeds were Gloucester Old Spot and the Large Black, and Clydesdale, Shire and Hackney, the horses. Later the popularity of the continental breeds grew with a sharp decline in the native breeds. They have regained a signifi cant hold in the Show ring however, and the Society will be showing its support for these valuable breeds at the Centenary Show.

Gloucestershire Old Spot Pig“Old Spots” are popular with farmers in both the pure bred and cross forms; they produce good weights of tasty meat and can raise large litters of piglets. For registration they must have at least one black spot and be predominantly white. As there was little recording of pig types before the 20th century, first pedigrees were recorded only in 1913, making this the oldest pedigree breed in the world. However, documentary evidence and in particular paintings prove that they have been in existence for at least 500 more years. Old Spots are particularly docile and manageable, making them popular with smallholders as well as pasture farmers. Visitors can see a celebrity Old Spot at Cregneash on the Manx National Heritage farm, and the meat is often offered at hog roasts and farmers’ markets in Douglas and around the Island.

Irish Moiled Cattle“Moiled” is from the Gaelic “Maol” and refers to the distinctive bump or crown on the head of the Moilie. Red and white, usually with a roan or flecked face, it is the only surviving domestic animal native to Northern Ireland. Docile and easily handled, the Moilie will live off poor quality grazing and is partial to browsing on willow and ivy, making it an ideal conservation cow. Good milkers, they produce well for their calves and are equally capable of delivering quality marbled meat. There are plans to introduce a foundation herd of Moilies to the Isle of Man in 2014.

This summer The Southern District Agricultural Society is looking forward to celebrating its Centenary Show on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July with The Manx Ark Project and the Rare Breed Survival Trust who will be displaying some very special rare cattle breeds alongside our exhibitors own native breed stock.

D-Day The 70th Anniversary - A Manxman’s Journey

Manxman Hector Duff recounts his memories of Operation Overlord and the unexpected resistance as the Allies tried to push into France and force the Germans back into their own country.

Hector’s account is chronicled by Colonel Charles Wilson of the IOM Cadet Force…

“I suppose I look at D Day as a crossroads between the long war that we had already fought and the final push which was to end World War II. Throughout the war I had fought in the Royal Armoured Corps with The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (RGH).

We knew we were going over a beach somewhere. We eventually embarked in a Landing Craft Tank (LCT) and once again I had the pleasure of being tossed about on the ocean in a flat bottomed ship. The Channel crossing was rough. I was below, being ill and could see nothing until we were ordered by a Royal Marine officer to man our vehicles, start them up and run the engines until thoroughly warm to cut down the chances of being swamped by the sea.

My abiding memory when I could see out was seeing the hundreds and hundreds of ships and other craft crossing the Channel. I have learned since that there were more than five thousand vessels involved. I could only see a small part of that armada but it has made a lasting impression on me. When I got into my vehicle, I felt ready. As the doors of the vessel opened and we drove out I felt back in the war. The infantry had gone ahead of us. We were about six hours after the first wave. The tide was further out and therefore more in our favour. I could see the steel emplacements and traps to avoid as we ran up the beach.

We were under heavy fire. It was shell fire not infantry small arms and I could hear the ‘crack thump’ of heavier shells leaving barrels and fortunately for me passing by or overhead. The Beachmasters who commanded the flow of vehicles had to be ruthless. If you stalled for any reason or were disabled by shell fire or sea, you were simply bulldozed out of the way to make way for following vehicles. I will never forget the amount of infantry dead on the beach and in the water. Those initial waves of men had secured our beachhead. We had landed in mainland Europe. The invasion was a reality. We were somewhere near Port en Bessin and Le Hamel on ‘Gold’ Beach. The Americans were to our right on Omaha and the Canadians were on our left on Juno. My boss, Brigadier WRN (‘Looney’) Hinde was after all the intelligence he could gather and we were seeking out the brigade intelligence officers who had gone before us. Eventually we joined up with them and the boss was able to learn something of the enemy positions. A lot has been written about the fact that the beaches were defended by remnants of the German Army and Hitler Youth. The resistance I encountered was from stiff battle hardened troops. I remember being shelled over as we bedded down against some stone walls. On day two the regiments in the brigade began to land. On the third day our tactical HQ arrived and we were able to shake out into battle formations.

A week later we had pressed forward under heavy resistance to Villers-Bocage, beyond Bayeux. We were now fully formed as the 22nd Armoured Brigade Group with a mix of armour, infantry and artillery. On the 17th July during Operation Goodwood, the fight for Caen, my vehicle was hit and I was injured by a swinging machine gun as I got out. That meant a respite from combat until I was fit again for the push into Germany.”

The Normandy Veterans, under The Spirit of Normandy Trust, is setting up a new memorial to those who fought on the beaches of Northern France in 1944. I was there and saw the sacrifi ces made by so many Allied troops. The memorial will be placed in the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire. The Trust has a wide range of activities, undertaking fundraising to promote both education for youth concerning World War II and welfare for families.

Education is encouraged through visits by schools to Normandy and through a series of essay competitions. On the welfare front the Trust works in conjunction with SSAFA the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association and The Royal British Legion. The Trust is now working to raise the funds needed to build this new memorial.

Stunning New Coin Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of Matthew FlindersThe Isle of Man Treasury is delighted to announce the release of a beautiful new coin which celebrates the 200th Anniversary of Matthew Flinders.Captain Matthew Flinders was a distinguished English navigator and cartographer who was the first to circumnavigate Australia and to identify it as a continent.

He was also the first to have his Atlas of maps of Australia published. Born in March 1774, Flinders made three voyages to the southern ocean. During the second voyage it was confirmed that Van Diemen’s Land, which is now Tasmania, was an island. After this voyage his work had come to the attention of Sir Joseph Banks and as a result, in January 1801, Flinders was given command of the Investigator and promoted to Commander the following month.

Aboard the Investigator, Flinders started his exploration of the Australian coastline and proceeded around the coastline drawing up his maps as he went. After his return to England, Flinder’s map of Terra Australia was first published in January 1814. Revered in Australia and acknowledged as one of the greatest navigators in history, he died 200 years ago in 1814 aged 40, the day after the book and atlas was published.

This special 200th Anniversary coin shows the HMS Investigator and a map of Australia surrounded by iconic images that represent Australia. The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.

This stunning collection is a celebration of the life of Howard Pixton, a hero of British Aviation, who was the first Briton to win the famous International Schneider Trophy Seaplane Race. Man Lands on the Moon 1969Men first landed on the Moon, on 21st July 1969. Apollo XI American astronaut, Neil Armstrong, set his left foot on the surface of the Moon and uttered the famous words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He was joined by fellow astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. While they collected Moon samples, the third astronaut Michael Collins, told mission control in Houston that he had successfully orbited the Moon in the mother ship Columbia. 2013

Playing Cards Issue date 8th August 2014The history of playing cards is one filled with mystery and intrigue. Thought to have originated in China in 1294, they were originally produced by hand and when gambling became a popular pastime they were soon widely circulated across Europe. Countries infused their local tastes into designs and in the late 19th century when Warrington businessman Samuel Webb opened his first shop in Douglas, Isle of Man he adapted playing cards as souvenir items for tourists depicting black and white illustrations of quintessential island settings and photographed locations.

Panama Canal Miniature Sheet Issue date 8th August 2014The Panama Canal is a 77 kilometre (48 mile) waterway across the Isthmus of Panama joining the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal runs from Limón Bay at Colón to the Bay of Panama at Balboa and provides a key channel for international marine trade. Within the Canal - which has a minimum depth of 2.5 metres - there is a series of three sets of locks: the Gatun, Pedro Miguel and the Miraflores locks.
