This document provides an overview of current and less current funding options for student and researcher

mobility. We tried to be as complete as possible, but do not pretend to be truly exhaustive. Tips and hints

are always welcome and might be included in a future edition.

The subdivision used is based on incoming and an outgoing mobility. Next subheading is the length of stay

(shorter or longer than 3 months). At the end is a brief overview of intersectoral mobility, together with

some useful websites.

European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB)

Awards for students and young scientists to attend ESEB meetings.

FWO - Grant for participation at a congress abroad Grants intended for conferences that are explicitly scientific in nature, with lectures and talks on original contributions

to science. The grants only cover travel costs.

Focus group: Young researchers affiliated to a university in the Flemish Community with at least one

(international) publication

FWO - Grant for participation workshop abroad Grants intended to specialize at a foreign institution in the area of their research or in a new technique, in particular by following a course or workshop. The grants for short foreign visits cover the travel costs and include a fixed allowance of 66 Euro per day. Focus group: Young researchers at a Flemish university or institution for scientific research with at least one

2. Short stay (up to 3 months)

FWO - Travel Grant for a short stay abroad Intended to offer junior researchers the chance to specialize in their area of research in a foreign laboratory or to learn

new techniques; to offer senior researchers affiliated to a Flemish university or institute for scientific research the

opportunity to undertake knowledge-gathering assignments abroad. The grants for short foreign visits cover the travel

costs and include a fixed allowance of 66 Euro per day.

Focus group: Junior and senior researchers at a Flemish university or institution for scientific research with at least

one publication.

Duration: Up to four weeks.

Destination: Abroad

EMBO Short-Term Fellowships EMBO supports life science research. The short-term fellowships funds visits to laboratories in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The aim is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups applying techniques unavailable in their own laboratories. Focus group: Post-doctoral researchers or pre-doctoral scientists who haven’t completed a PhD degree (they have a lower priority). Biermans-Lapôtre Foundation Provides housing for (PHD) students and professors during short stays (<90 days) in Paris for university training, conferences, courses or for examinations at a Parisian university or other institution of higher education or scientific research. La Agencia de Cooperación Internacional de Chile (AGCI) Integrated watershed management with emphasis on sustainable development of rural areas and environment. VLIR-UOS - Travel grants for students VLIR-UOS, Hasselt University and the City of Hasselt offer travel scholarships for students who wish to do their

internship in a developing country or for students who travel to the South for their thesis research.

3. Long stay (>3 months) Academica Belgica

Grant awarded to researchers that spent the last three years at a Belgian university. Prospective researchers should have distinguished themselves by the excellence of the grades obtained and work on a research project that may justify their stay in Rome. Focus group: "Stipendia Academiae Belgicae" Duration: between 3 and 9 months Destination: Rome (Italy) Deadline: Registration forms and all practical details will be available several months before deadline on the website. African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Fellowships (AIMS) Focus group: Postdoctoral Fellowships are available to recently qualified doctoral graduates in all fields in the

mathematical sciences

Anneliese Maier Research Award Award winners are expected to spend a period of up to five years cooperating on a long-term research project with the nominator and/or specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany. Focus group: researchers from the fields of the humanities and social sciences whose scientific achievements have been internationally. BAEF - Belgian American Educational Foundation – Fellowship for Research in the USA Support of exchanging university students, scientists and scholars between the United States and Belgium. Non-renewable grants for one academic year of study or for one full year of research in the U.S.A. Belgian Historical Institute (BHIR) in Rome Grants are awarded for a stay in Italy. The grant is a standard fee for the residence and travel costs. Focus group: (mainly) young academics in the area of history, art history, philology and archaeology. Bachelor’s degree or a PhD in a discipline within the humanities. Biermans-Lapôtre Stichting The Foundation Biermans-Lapôtre offers housing to Belgian and Luxembourg students, researchers and professors from around the world. Bilateral Cultural Agreements of the Flemish Community The Flemish Community concluded Bilateral Cultural Agreements with 25 countries and on a reciprocal basis these

countries offer a limited number of postgraduate and post university scholarships to Flemish students.

EMBO Long-Term Fellowships EMBO is an organization that supports life science research. This fellowship supports post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world. The Humboldt Foundation pays the host an allowance for research costs amounting to 800 EUR per month for research fellows from the natural sciences and engineering and 500 EUR for humanities scholars. Focus group: Post-doctoral researchers Duration: up to 2 years (3 years if the receiving institute is in Singapore) Destination: Abroad Deadline: twice a year 15 February and 15 August. Erasmus Belgica The main objective of the Erasmus Belgica programme is to enhance the cooperation between the Flemish, French and German-speaking community by student and docent mobility. Erasmus The Erasmus programme is a part of the Life Learning Programme of the European Commission. One of the main

objectives of Erasmus, is to stimulate the student and docent mobility within higher education between the

participating countries.

ESASTAP - the advancement of European - South African scientific and technological (S&T) cooperation. Is a dedicated platform for researcher or student planning a stay in South Africa

Destination: South Africa

European University Institute (EUI) senior fellowships The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence (Italy) is an international postgraduate and post-doctoral teaching

and research institute established by European Union member states to contribute to cultural and scientific

development in the social sciences, in a European perspective. By statute, the EUI is an intergovernmental

organisation.

Duration: up to ten months (up to 3000€/month)

Destination: one of the EUI's four Departments (Italy)

Deadline: 30 March and 30 September

Fulbright Scholarships The Commission for Educational Exchange offers approximately 35 scholarships annually for study, teaching and research in the United States at the graduate (Master’s or PhD) or post-doctoral level. The awards vary from round-trip travel to grants covering all expenses for an academic year. FWO - Travel Grant for a long stay abroad Affiliated to a university in the Flemish Community with preferably at least one international publication. No more than one long visit grant per person and per civil year can be requested. Henri Benedictus Fund – Fellowship for Biomedical Engineering Research in the USA Funding to cover living and travel expenses. Fellows are expected to stay in the U.S.A. for a year. Managed by het Koning Boudewijnfonds en B.A.E.F. Focus group: Candidates must be nominated by a Rector or a Dean of Faculty from a recognized Belgian university Duration: 1 year (outright grant of $40,000) Destination: USA Deadline: Before October 31 for research starting between July 1 and December 31 of the following year. Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers A Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows you to carry out a long-term research project you have selected yourself in cooperation with an academic host you have selected yourself at a research institution in Germany. Focus group: Post-doctoral researchers who completed their PhD less than four years prior to the date of application. Intercollegiate Center for Management (I.C.M.) Doctoral Fellowship Program The award is granted annually for a period of three years. It involves a stay of one year in a foreign university. Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science - Postdoctoral fellowship Japan The programme is open to all scientific fields to carry out research in a Japanese institute recognized by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. A research plan must be submitted in advance in consultation with the Japanese researcher with whom the visit is planned. La Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica, CONICYT Grants to begin or continue studies leading to doctoral degrees at universities in Chile, in programs that are accredited or accreditation process by the National Accrediting Commission of Chile (CNA-Chile). Focus group: Chilean or foreigners with permanent residency in Chile in all areas of knowledge. Marie Curie European Reintegration Grants (ERG) The grants assist researchers to become professionally reintegrated (usually) within their country of origin. National Research Fund Luxembourg (AFR) National Research Fund Luxembourg (AFR) invites applications for its AFR postdoctoral grants.

Stichting Prinses Marie-José Funds searches to be undertaken in Italy to study art-historical or musicological topics, preferably related to artistic

Subsidization Programme of the Flemish Government for internships with international organizations Funding programme sponsored by the Flemish Government in order to stimulate young people to participate in

internship programmes of international organizations.

The Washington Center Every year, the Flemish Community grants a number of scholarships for The Washington Center to excellent students.

The Washington Center experience is comprised of an internship, an academic course, and a Leadership Forum. All

students are enrolled in a particular program according to their area of interest. Focus group: Bachelor, master and

PhD students in the disciplines of: advocacy, arts, business, information technology, international relations, global

trade, law and criminal justice, management, media and communications and political science

VLIR-UOS - PhD scholarships for researchers at a Flemish university (VLADOC) VLIR-UOS

1 provides scholarships to people who wish to carry out research on a development topic at a Flemish

university. Focus group: EU citizens who wish to carry out a PhD study at a Flemish university and are allowed to register as a doctoral student at this Flemish university. Duration: 2 + 2 years (or shorter duration: 1+2 years or 1+1 years) Deadline: February Website: www.vliruos.be

4. Sabbatical leave

Alexander von Humboldt Professorship Enables award winners to carry out long-term and ground-breaking research at universities and research institutions in Germany. Website: http://www.humboldt-foundation.de/web/alexander-von-humboldt-professorship.html

EMBO Molecular Medicine Sabbaticals These sabbaticals are established to encourage collaborations between clinicians and research scientists and to support clinicians who wish to visit basic research laboratories in a different EMBC Member State. FWO – Sabbatical leave The aim of sabbatical leave is to offer full-time members of the autonomous academic staff of universities in the

Flemish Community the opportunity to dedicate 3 months to 1 year entirely to their scientific research. Thanks to the

FWO funding, they can be exempted from their teaching duties. The sum of €2,500 per month is paid to the university,

which can use it to replace the person concerned or to support the beneficiary in his/her research.

Focus group: Full-time members of the autonomous academic staff of a university in the Flemish Community.

Deadline: 1 April and 1 October every year and at least 3 months before the start of the scientific project.

BOF-Visiting fellows Short stays are meant for postdoctoral researchers, the stay must have an added value for UHasselt-research.

Focus group: Aspirants and seniors

Duration: 1 up to max. 3 months

Baekeland The Dutch Organization for Scientific Research invites applications for its innovation research

Focus group: Vice awards - applicants must have completed their doctorates between eight and 15 years ago.

Grants are worth up to €1,5 million each over five years. Veni awards - applicant must have obtained a doctorate

within the last three years. Grants are worth up to €250,000 each over a three year period.

Mintek Bursaries cover the full payment of registration, tuition and residence fees, plus an allowance, in return for a

commitment to work at Mintek on a year-for-year basis upon graduation.

Focus group: Undergraduate Bursary Programme is primarily to ensure a steady supply of trained and highly

skilled technical people. Postgraduate Bursary Programme further equips undergraduates through the development

of research methodology skills at the Masters level, followed by the generation of original research that contributes
