Need for ventilationEveryday activities such as cooking andbathing, and even breathing, can causeinternal humidity levels to rise. Withoutventilation this stale air has no way to beremoved, trapping potential pollutants andcausing a stuffy unpleasant atmosphere.

How traditional MEV worksA typical traditional MEV system works bydrawing this moist stale air from ‘wet’ roomssuch as kitchens and bathrooms, throughducts via a central fan and exhausting itthrough a roof-mounted terminal.Extraction happens at all times due to thecontinuously running fan.

To ensure the moist stale air is replaced,through-wall and window vents allow freshair from outside to enter. These vents aretypically placed within habitable rooms suchas living rooms and bedrooms.

This cycle of stale air out and fresh air inensures good indoor air quality and a freshclean environment. Importantly, it alsoremoves moisture which can otherwise leadto damp and mould.

Shortcomings of traditional MEV Traditional MEV systems rely on occupantsto recognise the need for increasedventilation and use a manual switch toincrease extraction when required. There are a number of issues with this thatcan lead to over- or under-ventilation andincreased energy costs:

Energy use ofventilation systems in

a typical three-bedroom house

(based on CIBSE data)

- Users can forget to boost the systemwhich means moist stale air is not removedeffectively.

- When the system is boosted, extraction is increased in all wet rooms, leading tounnecessary heat loss.

- Fan speed can be increased for longerperiods than required, leading to higherenergy usage.

Passivent iMEVPassivent iMEV is ‘intelligent’, in that itremoves the need for any occupantinteraction, automatically detecting rises inhumidity and responding accordingly.

The system only increases extraction whenrequired, so it uses much less energy as thecentral fan is not running at a higher speedunnecessarily. Heat loss is also reduced asiMEV relies on demand control (extractionwhen and where required); extraction is onlyincreased in the areas where humidity hasrisen. Alternatively, extraction control can bevia PIR activation based on occupancy levelsallowing automatic energy saving intelligentcontrol.

This has many additional benefits including:

● Lower energy usage due to lower overallfan speeds.

● Fit and forget solution, as rate ofventilation is not controlled by the user.

● No switches to worry about as the systemprovides efficient whole-house ventilationat all times.

Passivent iMEV LocalA constant speed fan providescontinuous low level extraction.

Extraction is boosted automatically inrooms where needed by means ofhumidity-sensitive extracts in each wetroom (bathroom, kitchen etc), i.e.locally to the source of humidity.

Main applicationsIndividual houses, apartments with onesystem per flat.

Passivent iMEV TotalAutomatically controlled by humidity-sensitive extracts locally in wet rooms(kitchens, bathrooms etc), plus a fanpressure sensor which maintains theoverall system pressure by adjusting thefan speed. This increases extraction inthe area(s) where required, whilstkeeping a sufficient level of ventilationin other rooms. At night time whenthere is low humidity and low demandthe fan speed reduces to the quietestminimum setting. This provides asystem of total control.

Main applicationsMulti-occupancy buildings such as carehomes, student accommodation andhotels where individual rooms mayrequire different extraction rates.

System selectionPassivent offer two main types of iMEVsystem to support the whole-houseventilation requirements of any dwelling.Whilst both are based on the sameprinciples, each system has features whichare particularly suited to the needs ofdifferent types of project.

As humidity increases in a wet room, thehumidity-sensitive extract within that roomopens to allow more air to be extracted. Thefan speed remains constant, so at the sametime the extraction rate in other(unoccupied) areas decreases, maintainingthe overall system extraction rate.

Fresh air is provided by either through-wallor window tricklevents. Humidity sensitiveversions are available which operateautomatically.

Acoustic options for these inlets can reducenoise ingress.

A sensor in the fan monitors the pressurewithin the system. As humidity increases inone area the humidity-sensitive extractopens; the pressure sensor detects theresulting pressure drop and increases the fanspeed to bring the overall system pressureback to the preset level.

This operation increases extraction only inthe area(s) where it is required, whilstmaintaining a sufficient level of extraction inother rooms.

This provides a guaranteed performance, unlike other constant pressure systemswhich are based on the fan performance.

Automatic humidity-sensitive, some withswitched boostUsed to provide fully automatic extractionbased on humidity levels within wet rooms(kitchens and bathrooms). Can also be boostedby the user if additional extraction is required(switch located in the vicinity causes extract toopen further, increasing the level of extraction).Suitable for use within residential and caremulti-occupancy buildings where individualusers may be unable to control the systemeffectively.

Constant volume with switched boostThe A141E is particularly suited as part of adwelling house ventilation solution whereby aconstant level of ventilation is wanted for themajority of the time, whilst still offeringoccupants the option to boost ventilation.

Constant volume with passive infra-red boostProvides constant extraction at a relatively lowlevel but boosts automatically for 30 minutes upon detecting a presence withinthe room. This is has added advantages withinbathrooms as it can be used to tackle odour aswell as humidity.

Constant volumeExtract is set at a constant level so extraction isalways the same. Increased extraction isregulated by fan speed rather than the extractitself. Suitable for when similar levels ofextraction are always required (kitchens, storerooms).

Boost switch (timed for 30 minutes)Constant boost switch

Passivent have a wide range of extractoptions available for use in the differentapplications. They are located in wet roomssuch as bathrooms, WCs and kitchens.

Each extract provides a level of control thatis suitable for the room and activity at anytime. Each room has different requirementsfrom the ventilation system; Passiventprovides a truly adaptive solution for each.

For example, a WC is notpermanently occupied and sodoes not need such a highlevel of permanent extraction. However, once occupied aboost rate is required.

Window ventsThese are incorporated within the head ofthe window. There are various types availablewith different controls, from manual cordoperated units to fully automatic humidity-sensitive versions.

These units are usually installed by thewindow manufacturer at the time of makingthe windows. Each is designed to ensurethat airflow is not directed into the centre ofthe room which residents mainly occupy, butis directed upwards, reducing the effect ofdraughts.

There are also acoustic options includingeither manual or automatic control. Thesecan give sound reduction of up to42dB Dn,e,w providing a quieter, peacefulliving environment.

Wall ventsA range of through-wall vents is alsoavailable, which can be used where it is notpossible or desirable to fit a window vent orwhere a greater control of supply air isrequired.

Wall vents are infinitely adjustable betweenopen and closed, so allow close control ofhow much air is allowed in.

Humidity-sensitive options are also availablewhere manual control is not required.

The acoustic range can also providesubstantial sound reduction of up to 50dB Dn,e,w.
