SustainabilityThe sun is a sustainable light source, andnatural daylight can make a significantcontribution to sustainable building design.Rooflights are an effective and efficientmeans of maximising natural daylight indark areas, often virtually eliminating theneed for supplementary electric lightingduring the day.

Passivent natural daylight systems, used as acomplement to artificial lighting, canconsiderably reduce the annual energyconsumption of any building, therebyreducing CO2 emissions.

Proven benefits of natural lightScientific studies have shown the positivebenefits of natural daylight for health andwellbeing in a range of applications.

The CIBSE Office Lighting Guide states thatNatural Daylight is an almost universalworker requirement. When given a choice, most people prefer a working environmentwith daylight to one without. It referencesdocumented evidence confirming thatexcluding daylight leads to increasednumbers of complaints about the workingenvironment, and may adversely affectproductivity. The Daylight WorkplaceRegulations state that “The lighting in everyworkplace shall, as far as is reasonablypractical, be by natural light.”

BRE Environmental Assessment MethodThe benefits of natural daylighting arerecognised by the Building ResearchEstablishment (BRE) EnvironmentalAssessment Method (BREEAM).

BREEAM Modules cover Schools, Offices,Healthcare, Retail and Industrial buildings. These buildings are then rated on a scale ofPASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT.Passivent natural daylight systems cancontribute to the credits available under theHealth and Wellbeing Section HW01 and theEnergy Section E01.

PERFORMANCE

Unique test programmeThe performance of the Sunscoop TubularRooflight system has been firmly establishedby a unique and extensive period of testing, unparalleled in the tubular rooflightindustry, carried out by Silsoe ResearchInstitute (SRI) and BPD. Measurements weretaken over four to six month periods duringthe summer/ autumn in all natural lightconditions ranging from bright clear skies toovercast conditions.

This comprehensive monitoring has for thefirst time provided accurate, realistic andreliable performance data for tubularrooflight systems including direct anddiffuse lighting conditions.

The research is subject of a published paperentitled “Optimisation & design of ducteddaylight systems: 2010” which is specific toPassivent systems only.

Typical light levelsThe light output from the Sunscoop systemdepends on the size and length of tubing, offset angles if any, the external skyconditions and light levels measured in lux.

The distribution of the light in the roomdepends on the diffuser type and the wall, ceiling and floor reflectances.

A sophisticated in house computerprogramme has since been developed toaccurately predict light levels of Sunscoopsystems, based directly on the SRI and BPDmonitoring.

System layoutSunscoop systems can pass through a roofspace or other void.

For maximum effectiveness the tubingshould be as straight as possible. However, since it is often impractical to site the ceilingdiffuser directly below the roof-mountedglazing, the tubing system allows an offsetby means of an elbow. It is adjustable up to30º from vertical.

Other elbows can be used but monitoringhas shown that these will adversely affectperformance.

SitingWhere possible the roof-mounted glazingshould be located on a south-facing slope togain the maximum amount of daylightunder both direct and diffuse conditions.

Factors which need to be considered whensiting a Sunscoop include:- Location of the room to be lit and suitable

position of the ceiling diffuser.

- Roof space obstructions.

- Proximity of other buildings, trees etc, which may cast shadows at certain timesof the day or year.

Passivent Sunscoop & Airscoop Builder has been purposedesigned to interface with EDSL’s established Tas buildingthermal analysis tool, which is the first dynamic simulationmodeling (DSM) of its kind to be approved for both BuildingRegulation Approved Document L2 and the EnergyPerformance Certificate. The Passivent programme adds afurther dimension to the Tas Building Designer system, whichalready calculates performance taking into account the long-term dynamics affecting the building according to its locationand orientation.

Passivent Sunscoop Builder enables users readily to model thebuilding daylight factor to BRE methodology, taking account ofPassivent Sunscoops and Sunstracts. It also enables calculationof the number and size of Sunscoops required to achieve a giveninternal illuminance, enabling their associated impact onenergy and carbon performance to be assessed

The Passivent Sunscoop iPSV™ system isdesigned to provide both natural daylight

and ventilation to bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, en suites and other similar areas,in both domestic and commercialapplications.

Natural daylight enters through a roofmounted dome and is reflected down the highly reflective tubing througha Skyview ceiling diffuser. This innovativediffuser consists of a grid of fresnel lenseswhich provides a wider spread of lightwithout excessive losses and enables the skyto be viewed.

Ventilation is controlled by the ‘intelligent’extract operated by a series of nylon bands, which respond to humidity levels andregulate the size of the air opening.

Utilising a separate ducting system allowsoptimum performance from both units - theshortest possible length to maximise naturaldaylight through the ceiling diffuser and aseparate duct for the extract to optimumlength for the stack effect.

Key features● No electrical connection or power source

is required so the system is naturallyenergy efficient.

● Intelligent humidity controlled extractresponds automatically to changes inrelative humidity giving greaterventilation when humidity is high whilstpreventing unnecessary ventilation andheat loss when humidity is low.

● 24 hour condensation control with gentleextraction - operates all day and every dayas required combating condensation andmould growth.

● Completely silent in operation.● Complies with the requirements of

Approved Document F.● Minimal maintenance - no mechanical

components to go wrong. No costly solarpanels or battery backups.

● Automatic response and no operatingcontrols, ideal for special needsapplications.

● Tests by Building Research Establishment(BRE) have shown an intelligent passivestack system incorporating a humiditysensitive extract gives a 15 - 40% savingin ventilation heat loss dependent onoccupancy levels.

● Thermal modelling by De MontfortUniversity has shown that the intelligentpassive stack system operates effectivelyeven in summer months and internalbathrooms. The research alsodemonstrated effectiveness even in veryairtight dwellings.

● Can be supplied with optional integralelectric light fitting which takes a lowenergy bulb to avoid the need foradditional light fitting for night time use.

● Luminaire turns on with optional ‘softstart’, allowing a gradual increase in lightoutput and adjustment to the requiredlevel.

● The Sunscoop hybrid incorporates alighting controller, lux sensor and PIRpresence detector.

● When the unit determines there isadequate natural light available, the lampis automatically turned off.

● When light levels fall, the lamp isswitched back on and its output continuesto be regulated by the daylight sensor.

● The programmable PIR presence detectorwill turn off the lamp when the space isunoccupied irrespective of the light level.

Ceiling Diffuser / LuminaireThe unit comprises a 350mm standarddiffuser with option for Skyview type. Theadjacent luminaire features a white powdercoated spun aluminium bezel and a diamondfaceted vacuum metallised aluminiumreflector housing a dimmable 26W compactfluorescent lamp. Sensor and control gearare pre-fitted.

Sizes350mm diameter unit contains onedownlight, which at full capacity producesan output of 1800 lumens.

AppearanceWhite ABS ceiling diffuser ring toencompass both Sunscoop diffuser anddownlight assembly.

PerformanceThe sensor which is looking directlydownward continously monitors the lightlevel reflected back to the ceiling andregulates the output of the compactfluorescent lamp to maintain an approximatepre-determined light level. Setting the pre-determined light level requires the unit to becommissioned by a Passivent MastercareInstaller.

Note: Since daylighting and room conditionscan change continuously, the lighting levelachieved may vary to some extent from thepre-set level.

METRODOME ROOF ACCESS HATCH

DescriptionMetrodome Roof Hatches provide access to aroof from inside a building. The constructionis similar to the standard rooflight but thetop opens to 90° and is supported by twin‘slip and stick’ gas struts. Tops are availableeither glazed or insulated aluminium. An internal latch retains the top when closedand can be secured with a padlock (notsupplied). These units are not available forbuilder’s kerbs.

SizeThe access hatch is available in the followingsizes: 900 x 900, 1050 x 1050, 1200 x 900 and1200 x 1200mm.

Thermal insulationThe insulated upstand and double or tripleskin glazing, with vented air gap, give goodthermal insulation and minimise the risk ofcondensation.

The overall calculated U-value for a 600 x600mm unit with triple glazing and upstandis 1.99W/m2K.

Passivent Technical Services Department canprovide computer calculations of U-valuesfor given rooflight sizes in different flat roofconstructions to comply with BuildingRegulations Part L 2010. The calculated U value will vary with the size of rooflight, due to the changing ratios of upstand, glazing and frame area.

Internal and external fire spread (B2/B4)The internal surfaces of the rooflightupstand and frame are non combustible andwould achieve a Class 1Y rating when testedto BS 476: Part 7: 1987.

Polycarbonate glazing a minimum of 3.0mmthick with a Class 1 rating is deemed byBuilding Regulations Approved DocumentB4 to be rated AA.

Metrodome rooflights can therefore be usedwithout restriction on size or spacing in alltypes of room and circulation space, exceptprotected stairways.

Weather resistanceMetrodome rooflights are deluge and drivingrain resistant as demonstrated by test.

Non-fragilityMetrodome rooflights meet the highest levelof impact resistance (1200 joules) to draftstandard BS EN 1873 in BRE tests, and maybe considered non-fragile under the latestguidelines of HSG33 ‘Health and safety inroof work’.

PERFORMANCE DATA

Ventilation performanceMaximum ventilation area: see sizes table.Passivent can advise on size of Airstractterminal in relation to volume of airmovement required, likely externalconditions and internal temperatures.

Data from independent testing is availableon request.

Impact strengthThe unit has been subjected to large soft bodyimpact testing by BRE and may be considerednon-fragile to HSG 33. It will resist a soft-bodyimpact of at least 1200 Joules.

Fire spread: internal and externalRatings to BS 476: Part 7: 1987 are: Class 1for internal surfaces of the upstand and frame, and Class 1Y for the polycarbonate glazing.

Under Building Regulations ApprovedDocument B4 paragraph 15.7, apolycarbonate rooflight with a Class 1 ratingmay be regarded as having an AA designationfor external fire spread.

By virtue of the above performance, underApproved Document B2 Table 11 and B4Section 14, Litevent ventilators can be usedwithout restriction on size or spacing in alltypes of occupiable and circulation spaceexcept protected stairways.

Weather resistanceDriving and deluge rain resistancedemonstrated by test.

Biological resistance4mm screen in cowl excludes large insects.

Thermal insulationThe upstand and double/triple-skin glazinggive good thermal insulation and minimisethe risk of condensation. Our TechnicalDepartment can provide computercalculations of U-values for given sizes indifferent roof constructions to comply withBuilding Regulations Part L 2010.

Light transmissionFor daylight areas see dimensions table.Average visible light transmission for 3mmglazing: clear 92%, diffused 85%, and bronze50%. Clear glazing allows the greatestamount of daylighting, making it ideal whenseeking passive solar gain. Diffused glazingdiffuses the light and cuts down shadows andbright spots. Bronze glazing provides a goodcombination of light transmission withgreater control of passive solar gain.
