Dear Colleagues, In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating its 23-th anniversary, which is an important event for the EARAZA membership that now includes 93 zoological institutions. EARAZA Council offers to your attention the 36d volume of the Informational Issue on the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which consists of two parts. This publication has been prepared by the staff of the EARAZA Executive Office and the staff of the Scientific-Methodological Department of the Moscow Zoo based on the results of the analysis of data sent in by EARAZA member zoos.

This publication provides information about 122 zoological institutions and their animal collections. A separate section is dedicated to significant zoo events and other activities that were held at the zoos, aquariums, breeding stations and other zoological organizations in the past year.

The publication presents the report on the EARAZA activities that were carried out in 2016, as well as the latest data on the zoological collections in 18 countries including those in CIS states, some Baltic countries, Denmark, Israel, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Germany.

To make the publication timely and useful, the member zoos are requested to keep to the deadline for submission of the materials to the EARAZA Information and Methodical Centre.

We would like to remind you that the information on your zoological institution, animal inventories in taxonomic order (according to the taxonomy recognized by EARAZA and including scientific names), and data on animal breeding as of the 1st of January of the current year, should be sent before the 1st of February.

Also, please try to observe the deadline when sending logotypes and guidebooks of your zoo for the general information section, as well as the notes on the zoo news and articles on education and methodical activities. To our regret, some zoos do not provide us with necessary information in a good time, which was the reason for the editorial board to make a decision on

Page 6: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

146

the new rules of editorial procedure; required information provided after the deadline will not be included in the next Informational Issue.

We hope that timely data submission and publication of the Informational Issue and its Appendices reflect your professional interests and that our fruitful cooperation will be successfully continued into the future.

Please note that this volume, as well as a number of previous volumes of the Informational Issue can be found on the EARAZA website: http://earaza.ru.

The Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums would

like to express a deep gratitude to the Moscow Zoo and especially to its General Director Svetlana V. Akulova for her support and assistance with publication of this Informational Issue.

EARAZA News

EARAZA Annual Report 2016

In 2016, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums was guided

by its action plan and decisions adopted by the EARAZA Annual Conferences hosted

by the Moscow Zoo in 2014, Kosice Zoo, Czech Republic, in 2015, and Dvur

Kralove Zoo, Czech Republic, in 2016.

The 22nd

EARAZA Annual Conference was held from 6 to 9 of September at

Dvur Kralove Zoo (Czech Republic), on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the

Zoo in the city of Dvur Kralove. The closed conference session held on September 8

was attended by 49 representatives of zoos and aquariums from ten countries. The

Council and Executive Office reports for 2015 were presented and the Action Plan

and budget for 2016 were discussed and approved along with the report on some

other areas of the EARAZA activity, including the implementation of the

conservation and research programs.

In the period under report, four new institutions were granted the status of the

EARAZA Candidate Member (the Zoo in Spišská Nová Ves, Slovakia; Stavropol

Zoo, Russia; Voronezh Zoo named after A. S. Popov, Russia; and the “Python”

Zoological Centre in Komsomolsk-na-Amure city, Russia), six organizations, the

status of the Associated Member (“MosAquarium” Centre of Oceanography and

Marine Biology (“Vozrozhdeniye VVC”), Russia; Feldman Ecopark, Ukraine; Nature

Museum and “Coral Reef” Centre, Russia; Bugu-Ene Park, Karakol city, Kyrgyzstan;

HVJ DESIGN company, Denmark; and Zooprofis company, Germany), and two

organizations, the status of the EARAZA Full Member (Zoo Brasov, Romania;

Magdeburg Zoo, Germany). EARAZA membership of three organizations was

terminated (Municipal Unitary Enterprise “Aquamir”; Vladivostok Oceanarium of

the Institute of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia; and Zoo Tabor, Czech

Republic).

During the reporting period, the work of the Information and Methodical Centre

and EARAZA was focused on the training and continuing education for zoo staff,

strengthening of cooperation between EARAZA zoos, conservation of rare and

endangered animal species, and participation of member-zoos in conservation

programs of international zoo organizations, especially the World Association of

Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), of which EARAZA is the Association Member, and

European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

workshop for veterinarians.

6. Providing methodical and advisory assistance for veterinarians of EARAZA

member zoos (Veterinary Department of the Moscow Zoo).

- The Working Group on Terrestrial and Freshwater Invertebrates (IWG)

In 2016, the Working Group included 20 professionals from: the zoos of

Moscow, Chelyabinsk, Cherkassy, Kiev, Tallinn, Riga, and Latgale; Children’s

Ecological and Education Centre in St.-Petersburg (“Bugagashechka”); Lomonosov

Moscow State University; Tomsk State University; Odessa Dolphinarium; the State

Darwin Museum; and “Butterflyservice” company (Stockholm, Sweden). During the

year, members of the Group rendered advisory and methodical assistance to the staff

of other zoos and insectariums on all aspects of the husbandry, medical treatment,

study, and exhibiting of invertebrates. New invertebrate exhibits were opened in 2016

in a number of zoos on the initiative and with the support of the IWG.

In 2013, the Moscow Zoo was visited by the members of the Group from

Chelyabinsk, Leningrad, Tallinn, Riga, and Latgale Zoos, “Bugagashechka”

Children’s Ecological and Education Centre, the Entomology Department of

Lomonosov Moscow State University, the State Darwin Museum, and

“Butterflyservice” from Stockholm. New methods of invertebrate husbandry, as well

as plans and outcomes of the joint activity were discussed during these visits.

One of the last year’s most important events was the 6th

International

Workshop “Invertebrates in the collections of Zoos and Insectariums” that was

organized by the Moscow Zoo and EARAZA on the initiative of the IWG and held at

the Moscow Zoo on October 10 through 15, 2016. The organizing committee of the

workshop included four members of the IWG (M. Berezin, D. Osypov, Ye.

Tkacheva, and Dr. O. Korsunovskaya) who participated in the preparation and

holding of the workshop.

The workshop has been held already for 15 years. It typically takes place in

October of every third year. The 6th

workshop was one of the most representative and

well-organized joint events of the Moscow Zoo and EARAZA. The workshop was

attended by 132 professionals from eight countries, who represented zoos and

aquariums, ecological education centres, museums of natural history, research

institutes, universities, and commercial companies involved in breeding and study of

beneficial insects. Thirteen members of the IWG participated in the workshop.

An extremely busy program of the workshop was fully implemented, which

allowed achieving the goals of sharing new ideas and experience for improving

existing and establishing new collections of invertebrates and strengthening capacity

for innovations. Participants of the workshop discussed zoological, veterinary, and

conservation aspects of both the results of their work and future projects. The

workshop featured 53 plenary and poster presentations, with 17 presentations being

prepared by 12 IWG members co-authored by the colleagues from scientific research

institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The presentations addressed the

following problems: the role and potential of insectariums in ecological education;

conservation of biodiversity; study of insects and development of biological methods

of controlling plant pests; experience and prospects in the area of establishing new

educational exhibits (including exhibits of Hymenoptera and Arachnida species);

results of the studies in the area of invertebrate conservation and creation of ex-situ

populations of endangered species; news in invertebrate taxonomy (including

taxonomy of cockroaches and spiders); results of the study of biochemistry,

physiology, and behaviour of invertebrates; methods of identification of food pests

and prophylactics of infectious and parasitic disease of invertebrates; methods of

husbandry of aquatic invertebrates and some insect species (including rearing of

Lepidoptera species on artificial media); and breeding of leaf eating and food insects.

During the workshop opening ceremony, the welcoming remarks were made

by Vladimir Spitsin, Honorary Chair of the organizing committee, EARAZA

Chairman and President of the Moscow Zoo, A.A. Polylov, Doctor of Biology, the

Head of the Entomology Department of the Lomonosov Moscow State University,

and O.A. Gvosdeva, the Head of the Entomology Department of the State Darwin

Museum. The speakers noted the importance of long-standing cooperation of their

institutions with the Moscow Zoo. The first joint meeting of the members of the

EARAZA IWG, EAZA’s Terrestrial Invertebrate Taxon Advisory Group (TITAG),

and All Japan Insectarium Community Association was held at the workshop. The

meeting participants representing almost the whole territory from Northern Eurasia

through Russia to Japan discussed plans of future cooperation in the implementation

of joint projects for the study and conservation of rare invertebrate species.

All the participants of the workshop were presented with the certificates of

participation in the workshop, specially designed souvenirs, and informational

materials of the Moscow Zoo. A number of guided tours around the Moscow Zoo

exhibits were organized, including excursions to the Museum of Zoo History and to

the “Travelling to Arachnolandia” new exhibit. During six days of the workshop, an

exposition of exclusive macro photographs under the title “Visages of Multipeds”

was demonstrated in ZooDepot pavilion where the photos of insects and arachnids, as

well as of some aspects of their storylines, made by the members of “Macro Club”

and IWG, were presented.

Report on the workshop has been posted on the websites of EARAZA and

Moscow Zoo. Members of the IWG are preparing the collection of papers titled

“Invertebrates in the Collections of Zoos and Insectariums: Proceedings of the 6th

International Workshop.”

The members of the organizing committee of the workshop would like to

express their sincere gratitude to all those who contributed in the preparation and

holding of the workshop. Our special gratitude goes to Svetlana Akulova, General

Director of the Moscow Zoo, whose generous support and active assistance have

ensured the success of the workshop.

- The Working Group on Birds of Prey and Owls

This EARAZA’s Working Group includes: V.A. Ostapenko, Prof., Dr.

Sc.(Biol.); A.G. Sorokin, Cand. Sc. (Biol.), Head of the Department of Rare Species

of the All-Russia Research Institute of Ecology; I.R. Boehme, Dr. Sc. (Biol.),

Professor of the Moscow State University; V.B. Masterov, Cand. Sc. (Biol.); Moscow

Zoo’s staff members: L. Kurilovich, P. Rozhkov, N. Skuratov; and Heads of some

Breeding Stations for birds of prey: V.I. Pilyuga (Odessa), V.I. Gook (Kharkov), and

N.Yu. Belov (Belgorod). The members of the Group from the Moscow Zoo

continued sending out questionnaires (to 90 institutions maintaining collections of

birds of prey and owls) for gathering updated information on the collections and

cases of breeding. All the completed questionnaires were reviewed, and the data on

the collections and breeding results for 2016 were compiled into tables. Also,

exclusive information was collected with respect to the husbandry methods, breeding,

and capacities of birds to adapt to captive conditions and anthropogenic environment,

as well as on national specifics of falconry.

With the help of diploma-students from the Moscow Academy of Veterinary

Medicine, the Working Group continued collecting information for the analysis of the

development of Falconiformes collections of the zoos and breeding stations of the

region. The results of the data analysis (for owls) were published in the 25th Volume

of the Yearbook on Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos and Breeding Stations.

Acquisition of books on birds of prey and owls, both in hard copies and electronic

versions, for the library was continued. Preparation and editing of the next, 25th

volume of the Yearbook on Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos and Breeding Stations,

was completed, and the final version of the volume was ready for publishing in the

third quarter of 2016, and is now available on the EARAZA website

(http://earaza.ru). Some materials for the next volume of the Yearbook have been

already collected.

Members of the Working Group continue to provide various zoos’ staff with

advisory assistance in the area of collection planning and husbandry methods for the

management of birds of prey. The Working Group maintains close connections with

the Working Group on Birds of Prey and Owls of Northern Eurasia chaired by Prof.,

Dr. Sc. (Biol.) V.M. Galushin,.

Raptor breeding stations and some zoos are working on the development of

husbandry and breeding methods for managing birds of prey, especially of rare and

endangered species.

- The Working Group on Education

The Working Group on Education currently consists of the representatives of

the zoos of Moscow, St-Petersburg, Surgut, Tula (all – Russia), and Hluboka-nad-

Vltavou (Czech Republic).

In 2016, some members of the Working Group attended the EAZA Annual

Conference in Belfast, Ireland, and IZE Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

At the All-Russia Congress of Zoo Directors, Ye. Migunova delivered a

presentation on the role of zoo education.

Page 70: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

Works have been started on collecting papers and other education materials for

the 4th volume of the EARAZA’s collection of papers on the education activities of

zoos and aquariums, which will address new areas and forms of educational

activities.

Three presentations on various aspects of zoo education were given by the

members of the Working Group at the III International Ecological Forum under the

title “This is where we live” (city of Voronezh, Russia).

During the year, members of the Group provided consultations on various

aspects of educational work to the staff of zoo education departments, e.g.

Kaliningrad Zoo, Vitebsk Zoo, St.-Petersburg Oceanarium, and others.

- The Working Group on the Elephants, Rhinoceroses, and Hippopotamuses

The Working Group consists of 24 staff members from 12 zoos.

Early in 2016, Renat Dzhumagaliev from the Moscow Zoo was appointed as

the new Chair of the Working Group on the Elephants, Rhinoceroses, and

Hippopotamuses.

The following activities were carried out in 2016:

Recommendations on the construction and design of new enclosures for

elephants, rhinoceroses, and hippopotamuses were provided to Kazan Zoo. Besides,

in the period from 18.04.2016 through 30.04.2016, three keepers from Kazan Zoo

underwent apprenticeship at the Elephant Department of the Moscow Zoo. The

keepers demonstrated a great interest in their work and carefully studied all the

manuals on elephant nutrition, husbandry, and training.

A surgery was performed at the Yekaterinburg Zoo on the female elephant with

the front foot inflammation resulting from the split of her nail caused by the excess

weight of the animal (see photos below).

The surgery was performed after standing sedation, which made the job more

complicated, but most part of the affected area was cleaned up. The wound is healing

successfully.

Page 71: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

Participants of the procedure of the elephant treatment at the Yekaterinburg Zoo

Olga Zusko, Curator of Elephants and Ungulates, was provided with

recommendations on the husbandry, nutrition, and environmental enrichment for the

elephants.

We are sincerely grateful to the Yekaterinburg Zoo’s team and Zoo Director

Svetlana Prylepina for their support and assistance. We would also like to thank

Alexander Semyonov for his help in carrying out the immobilization procedure.

Under the recommendation of the former and current Chairs of the Working

Group, the female elephant Chani was transferred from the Zoo of Stary Oskol to

Gelendzhik Zoo. We are happy for the female who is now living in a spacious

outdoor enclosure and enjoying mild climate.

Recommendations on elephant nutrition were given to Kaliningrad Zoo where

the elephants were fed on boiled foods including porridges and boiled potatoes. We

strongly advise against the use of boiled foods in elephant diets as it may cause

digestive system problems and obesity.

The Group is working on developing occupational elephant management safety

standards applicable to the situations of protected contact working, enclosure

cleaning procedures, and elephant foot treatment.

The Group is planning to continue its work on arranging expeditions to the

Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka, Corbett and Dadhwa National Parks in India,

and Chitwan National Park in Nepal.

In 2016, regional zoos supervised by the Informational and Methodical Centre

participated in the following EARAZA International Conservation and Research

Programs:

1. Conservation of the Steller’s Sea Eagle

The 18th

volume of the European Studbook for the Steller’s Sea Eagle was

prepared based on the data on the Steller’s sea eagles that were kept in the European

collections in the period from 01.01.2015 through 31.12.2015. As of 01.01.2016, the

European population stood at 319 (158.153.8) Steller’s sea eagles kept at 88 zoos and

breeding centres.

A paper titled “Some Results of the Joint Project of EARAZA and Lomonosov

Moscow State University, Aimed at the Creation of Captive Population of the

Steller’s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus); 1994-2015”, co-authored by V.B.

Masterov, M.S. Romanov, and O.E. Rvantseva, has been prepared and published in

the 25th

volume of the Yearbook on Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos and Breeding

Stations. The statistical analyses of the data on the age and sex structure of the

captive population and its growth and reproduction rates suggests that the population

created 20 years ago is currently quite stable.

For maintaining a relatively stable level of genetic diversity it is essential that,

on the one hand, the Coordinator produce justified transfer and breeding

recommendations and, on the other hand, the holders of the Steller’s sea eagles

follow the recommendations. In 2016, several recommendations on establishing new

breeding pairs were given to participating zoos, including the recommendation on the

transfer of the mature male Steller’s sea eagle from Tallinn Zoo, Estonia, to the Zoo

Chomutov (Czech Republic) for paring the male with a wild caught female whose

breeding will be an important contribution to the genetic status of captive population.

Unfortunately, objective reasons rendered the cessation of breeding of the birds

of overrepresented genetic lines at Almaty Zoo impossible, which hampered the

transfers of important birds to Almaty Zoo where these birds could be used for

establishing a new, genetically valuable pair.

The work is continued on the preparation for the new important stage of the

program, the reintroduction of the Steller’s sea eagle. As could be expected, the

greatest challenge at this stage is funding. Negotiations on the issue of attracting

funding for the project have been ongoing.

The work on drafting the guidelines on the Steller’s sea eagle husbandry and

breeding is underway. In this connection, a detailed questionnaire was circulated to

all Steller’s sea eagle holders. Unfortunately, only a few responses have been

received so far, though the experience in the maintenance and breeding of Steller’s

sea eagles and a number of the photos of enclosures, courtesy of some EARAZA

zoos, allowed the Coordinator to provide recommendations on the enclosure design

for some zoos that are planning to hold this species in the future.

Page 73: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

Due to financial support of the EARAZA, monitoring of the Steller’s Sea Eagle

population in the Lower Amur Region was continued by Vladimir Masterov

(Lomonsov Moscow State University).

2. Conservation of the Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia

The number of zoos holding mountain undulates has not changed significantly.

Mountain ungulates that are rarely seen in zoo collections have been kept at some

EARAZA member zoos, including: the argali Ovis ammon ammon (5.3 as of

01.12.2016) at Novosibirsk Zoo that is the only zoo in the world keeping this

subspecies in captivity; the Marco Polo sheep Ovis ammon polii (7.10 as of

31.12.2016) at Moscow Zoo (Marco Polo sheep are also kept at Tierpark Berlin); the

Kazakhstan argali Ovis ammon collium (1.3) at Almaty Zoo (the only zoo in the

world that keeps Kazakhstan argali); the Armenian mouflon Ovis orientalis(aries)

gmelini at Tallinn and Yerevan Zoos; the peninsular bighorn sheep Ovis canadensis

nelsoni at Prague Zoo; the Dall's sheep (or thinhorn sheep) Ovis dalli dalli at Tallinn

Zoo; the Transcaspian urial Ovis vignei arcal at the Zoos of Tallinn and Chomutov;

and the Bukhara urial Ovis vignei bochariensis at Tallinn and Leningrad Zoos.

Breeding was successful in the majority of zoos keeping mountain ungulates in

their collections. The most significant breeding events of the year of 2016 include

breeding of the argali Ovis ammon ammon at Novosibirsk Zoo and breeding of the

Marco Polo sheep Ovis ammon polii and Sichuan takin Budorcas taxicolor tibetana

at Moscow Zoo. Two offspring (2.0) of argali Ovis ammon ammon were born at

Novosibirsk Zoo. Six (4.2) Marco Polo sheep Ovis ammon polii and two (1.1)

Sichuan takins Budorcas taxicolor tibetana were born at the Moscow Zoo. The year

2016 was successful in terms of the musk ox (Ovibos moschatus) breeding. Musk

oxes have bred at the zoos of Bolsherechye, Moscow, Tallinn, and Yakutsk.

Due to obtaining new genetic lines, a herd of the Siberian ibex Capra sibirica

is being created at Kosice Zoo, Czech Republic. For this purpose, Siberian ibex

specimens were brought to Kosice from the Zoo Olomouc (0.3) and Tallinn Zoo (1.0)

in 2015, and as soon as in 2016, the first offspring (1.0) was produced. A group of

Siberian ibexes that consisted of 12 (5.7) individuals (as of 01.01.2017) is maintained

at the Moscow Zoo, with the animals being unrelated to the Siberian ibexes kept at

the EARAZA member zoos in Europe. In 2016, 2 (1.1) offspring were born at the

Moscow Zoo.

For a number of reasons, the cooperation between EARAZA zoos and, actually,

the activity of zoos under the Program for Conservation of Mountain Ungulates can

be characterized as passive. This situation can be largely attributed to the problems

associated with the strict veterinary requirements and CITES import/export permit

procedures. This applies in the first place to the animal transfers between EC

countries and Russia. Luck of interest towards the work with mountain ungulates is

also caused by the changes in the approaches of most zoos to the collection planning.

While in the past, attempts were made to keep the maximum possible number of

species of a certain genus, now zoos prefer keeping just one species, depending on its

Page 74: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

214

attractiveness and rareness or on its relevance in the context of collection planning

principles. Typical examples are the “Himalayas” exhibit that would hardly be

popular without blue sheep and snow leopards or the “Simien Mountains” exhibit of

Zoo Zurich, demonstrating unique wildlife of the Simien Mountains of the Northern

Ethiopia, with geladas, Nubian ibexes, and blue-winged geese being kept at the

exhibit. Similar exhibit was created in early 2017 in Magdeburg Zoo.

EARAZA zoos should prioritize ungulate species for justified approaches to

the activities aimed at the long-term management of certain ungulate species. Such

activities should be designed based on the aims of the program, and implementation

of the program will not be possible without adequate record keeping including data

on animal origin, transfers, etc. Unfortunately, the recent years have seen the

phenomenon that was rather typical for the zoos of the 1970s, notably, the

hybridization. In the absence of modern animal record keeping, it can seriously

undermine the effective implementation of any long-term ex situ conservation

program. It is especially important in case of mountain ungulates, as many ungulate

hybrids, such as a hybrid between the East Caucasian tur and the West Caucasian tur,

are extremely difficult to identify. The EARAZA Code of Ethics should include a

provision of inadmissibility of animal hybridization.

Any EARAZA member zoo can participate in the EARAZA Program on the

Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia. The size of the zoo is not very important, and it

does not matter whether the zoo maintains a single ungulate species or a dozen of

species of the mountain ungulates. Each zoo population of a certain species

considered as a target species in EARAZA conservation program is a part of the

whole EARAZA population, with each zoo being of great importance. Under the

EARAZA Program, the animals are transferred between participating zoos on non-

commercial basis.

If you have any questions relating to the participation in the EARAZA Program

for Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia, please send an email to Vladimir Fainstein,

Coordinator of the Program ([email protected]), or contact Tallinn

Zoo at the following address: Paldiski mnt. 145, Tallinn 13522, Estonia.

3. Conservation of Eurasian bustards

The project targets three species of the family Otididae, which occur in the Northern

Eurasia:

- The great bustard (Otis tarda tarda, O. t. dybowskii). Both subspecies are globally

threatened. In early 2017, the population of the western subspecies of the great

bustard kept at seven EARAZA zoos comprised 28 (12.16) birds, with 6 (2.4) of them

being kept at the Moscow Zoo’s Breeding Station. Currently, there are no birds of the

eastern subspecies in the regional collections. In 2016, as before, eggs laid by the

females at the Moscow Zoo were infertile. At the Karasuk Breeding Station of the

Novosibirsk Zoo, two chicks hatched and were raised. One chick was also raised

there in 2015. Unfortunately, the breeding male died last year at the Karasuk

Page 75: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

215

Breeding station, therefore an adult male from the Moscow Zoo was brought to the

Breeding Station. For successful running of the Program, the zoo population needs to

be supplemented by the birds of the western subspecies. One of the possible options

to consider is the use of the birds occurring in the Peninsula of Crimea, as the

population of the great bustards in that region is sedentary and may therefore

demonstrate a tendency to easier adapt to captive conditions; this assumption has

been supported by the experience of our colleagues in Spain, in their breeding of the

birds originating from the sedentary Spanish population.

Detailed description of the great bustard breeding at the Karasuk Breeding

Station is given below. In 2016, the breeding success of the last year was replicated;

the breeding pair produced two viable chicks, and both of them were successfully

raised. Indirect signs of mating were observed on three occasions (on April 18, 25,

and 30), including a messy appearance of the female and a heap of feathers in the

centre of the enclosure, which indicated the site of mating. Indirect signs, such as the

appearance of feathering on the female’s back and matted feathers on her neck,

suggested that the copulation most likely occurred in the morning of the 25th

of April

(Fig. 1).

Fig. 1. The female after copulation. A heap of feathers in the middle of the enclosure

indicates recent mating.

In the period from May 2 through 30, the female great bustard laid 8 eggs. The

first egg was without a shell, the fourth egg was coarse and poorly pigmented. Eggs

NN 2-8 (7 eggs) were put into the nest of the incubating female of the wood grouse.

After the incubation was completed, three eggs turned to be infertile (NN 4, 6, and

8), two eggs were infected (NN 2 and 3), which could be associated with their

prolonged storage (8 to 12 days) prior to the onset of incubation, and two eggs were

fertile (NN 5 and 7) and chicks successfully hatched from these two eggs.

Fig. 2. Feeding of the great bustard chicks.

Fertile eggs were laid on the 17th

and 20th

of May, i.e. 23 and 28 days after the

most probable copulation. When the pipping was observed on the 21st day of

incubation on the egg N 5, two “alive” eggs (NN 5 and 7) were removed from the

nest. Hatching of both chicks occurred in the incubator, on the 21st day from the start

of the incubation, on June 7 and 12, respectively. The hatching was closely monitored

and minimally assisted (Fig. 2).

Both chicks have been raised successfully; both turned out to be females (Fig.

3).

Рис. 3. Growing chicks of the great bustard, hatched in 2016.

To our great regret, the 15-year-old male of the great bustard died in late June.

Few days before his death, the male showed signs of the leg weakness and later was

not able to walk, which resulted in the severe stress; after every failed attempt to

move, the male lied down on his back, swinging his legs, and injured his wings to a

pulp. The male died after two days; the death was caused by the heart failure.

We hope that further work on breeding the Great Bustard in enclosures and

cages will facilitate establishing of a viable captive population of this interesting and

valuable species that just in the last century was considered as a game bird, but is

now becoming increasingly threatened. The wild populations of the great bustard in

Eurasia (with the exception of the Iberian Peninsula) are rapidly reducing.

- The little bustard (Tetrax tetrax). The species is globally threatened. Since 2006,

three birds (1.2) have been kept at the Moscow Zoo’s Breeding Station.

Unfortunately, so far there have been no cases of breeding, though lekking behavior

of the male was observed on a number of occasions. In early 2015, 2 (2.0) little

bustards were kept at the Karasuk Breeding Station of the Institute of Taxonomy and

Ecology (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences), but currently this

institution does not have birds of this species. A pair of little bustards is also kept at

the Stavropol Zoo and Exotarium. This is clearly not enough for the breeding

purposes. In order to start a breeding program it is necessary to acquire additional

birds or collect little bustards in the wild, where the population of this species is

Page 78: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

thought to be growing. This would be a useful approach to the creation of the founder

population in zoos and breeding stations.

- The houbara bustard (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii). The species is globally

threatened. Currently, just one male houbara bustard is kept at the Karasuk Breeding

Station of the Novosibirsk Zoo, and his spring lekking behaviour has been observed

several times in recent years. The regional zoos need additional birds for developing

techniques of natural breeding of this species under captive conditions. Breeding

stations for the houbara bustards are functioning in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. They

are run under the supervision of their sponsoring falconers from the UAE. One of the

goals of these breeding stations is releasing of some juvenile birds into their wild

habitats in Central Asia. All these breeding stations use the method of artificial

insemination and subsequent incubation of eggs and raising chicks.

4. Conservation of Rare and Endangered Geese of Eurasia

The goals of this Program are: the development and implementation of the

strategy for conservation and recovery of rare species of Anseriformes through

intensive captive breeding and further reintroduction of birds in the wild; and

establishing the required number of stable and genetically viable breeding

populations of rare Anseriformes in zoos and breeding stations. The following

species have the highest priority for the program:

- The Swan Goose Anser cygnoides. The birds of this species breed successfully at

the Moscow Zoo and other zoos of the region. By this time, a self-sustaining breeding

population has been established at regional zoos. By the end of 2016,

184 (55.59.70) swan geese were kept in 22 regional collections, with most of them

being maintained by the Moscow Zoo (46 birds), Tashkent Zoo (27), and Kharkov

Zoo (12). However, in 2016, breeding was successful only in three zoos: Novosibirsk

Zoo (3 chicks), Tashkent Zoo (7 chicks), and Kharkov Zoo (two out of 6 hatched

chicks have been raised). Reintroduction program is hampered only by the lack of

interest on the part of wildlife conservation bodies that could otherwise arrange

wildlife education activities for local people and hunters, prevent high mortality of

released birds, and implement monitoring of the swan goose wild population.

- The Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus. In the recent years, the staff of

the Moscow Zoo in cooperation with Swedish ornithologists attempted to establish

the Scandinavian population of the lesser white-fronted goose through capturing birds

from the wild populations distributed in the north of the European part of Russia. The

birds were given over to Swedish colleagues for the creation of the breeding stock

and future reintroduction of the young captive born birds in the wild. The first

positive results have been already received. EARAZA zoos are also involved in the

lesser white-fronted goose breeding, but the results are rather disappointing. Breeding

was successful only in some years. As of January 1, 2016, only 15 birds (9.4.2) were

Page 79: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

kept in 6 EARAZA collections. It should be noted that the population demonstrates

pronounced sex bias. The largest groups of the lesser white-fronted goose are kept at

the zoos of Moscow (4 birds) and Tallinn (4 birds). The size of the captive population

is not large enough to support a stable breeding population. No breeding was

registered in regional zoos in the reporting year; therefore, more attention should be

paid to the improvement of keeping conditions and husbandry methods for this

species. Besides, for supplementing the captive population it is necessary to obtain

additional pure-bred lesser white-fronted geese from the wild, since the data obtained

by Swedish ornithologists suggest that the lesser white-fronted geese in Europe may

carry genes of the greater white-fronted goose. Such birds should not be used in

reintroduction program.

- The Bewick's Swan Cygnus columbianus bewickii. The Bewick’s swans have not

been breeding at Moscow Zoo recently, while at Tallinn Zoo, the swans of the

western subspecies breed from time to time; e.g. in 2016, four chicks hatched and

were raised. Three chicks (1.2) hatched in the last year at Hluboka-nad-Vltavou Zoo

(Czech Republic). The birds of this species do not breed at other EARAZA zoos. By

the end of 2016, there were 29 Bewick’s swans kept in 12 regional collections. The

largest group of this species consisting of six birds is maintained at Tallinn Zoo. It

should be noted that seven zoos keep a single bird each. It is necessary to create

suitable conditions for the Bewick's swans in these zoos, as well as in other zoos of

the region. Another important task is establishing breeding population, preferably

through obtaining wild born individuals.

The Program also focuses on other rare bird species including the red-breasted

goose, the brant goose, the Aleutian Canada goose, the emperor goose, the bar-

headed goose, the Baikal teal, the marble teal, the common white-eye, the mandarin

duck, and the white-headed duck. Some of these species breed well at the zoos of

Western Europe, while others regularly breed at EARAZA zoos, but yet attention

should be paid to all of the listed species, and development of husbandry and

reintroduction methods should be continued. Thus, the Moscow Zoo’s Breeding

Station continues breeding barnacle geese (Branta bernicla), using the founder stock

presented by the birds that hatched from the eggs collected on the Kanin Peninsula

(Arkhangelskaya oblast) in 2004–2005 and were raised in artificial environment.

Currently, the zoo population of this species is thriving. As of 01.01.2017, there were

175 (32.32.111) barnacle geese in 30 regional collections. Barnacle geese have bred

at six zoos where 32 chicks have been successfully raised. The best results have been

achieved by Tallinn Zoo (17 chicks) and Moscow Zoo (9 chicks).

In 2011, the founder stock of the Aleutian Canada goose (Branta canadensis

leucopareia) was received from N.N. Gerasimov of the Elyzovo Breeding Station

(Kamchatka region). Unfortunately, the Breeding Station ceased to exist due to

financial and other reasons. However, its 20-year long work had resulted in the

restoration of the wild population of Aleutian Canada geese, which disappeared from

North Kuril islands 70 years ago. Results of the surveys conducted by our Japanese

Page 80: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

colleagues in the wintering grounds of the species show that the size of the wild

population exceeds 7,000 birds. In 2015, in the Breeding Station of the Moscow Zoo

and at the main territory of the Zoo, offspring of the Aleutian Canada goose (Branta

Canadensis leucopareia) were obtained. Sightings of the geese without rings

demonstrate that Aleutian Canada geese now breed in Kuril Islands. Some of the

Aleutian Canada geese that were initially sent to the Moscow Zoo were housed at the

Moscow Zoo’s Breeding Station, and some of them, at the Zoo. The geese breed

successfully and number 45 individuals (9.6.30). Apart from the Moscow Zoo,

Aleutian Canada geese are kept at Belgorod Zoo (1.1), Novosibirsk Zoo (1.0), and

Yakutsk Zoo (1.2). In total, there were 51 Aleutian Canada geese in EARAZA zoos

by the end of 2016, with most of the birds being kept at Moscow Zoo and its

Breeding Station. Last year’s breeding was successful at Moscow Zoo where 9 chicks

were raised, while two chicks that hatched at Yakutsk Zoo have died. In view of

successful reintroduction of the species in Kuril Islands and restoration of the

Kurilian-Japanese population, regional zoos should concentrate on maintaining

sustainable captive population of the Aleutian Canada Goose. The birds should be

distributed between zoo collections that are able to create necessary husbandry

conditions for this species.

Novosibirsk Zoo and Karasuk Breeding station of the Institute of Taxonomy

and Ecology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences continued

implementation of the project of establishing breeding population of the white-

headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) representing one of the rare ducks of Eurasia.

Hybridization with introduced ruddy ducks (Oxyura jamaicensis) is observed in the

European part of the range of the white-headed duck, which may result in further loss

of the gene pool of the species. Therefore, establishing artificial population of the

white-headed duck has a high conservation importance. The white-headed duck is

included in the Endangered category of the UCN Red List of Threatened Species and

in the Red Book of Russia, and is also listed in CITES Appendix II.

On April 16, after wintering at the Zoo, the birds were brought to the enclosure

complex of the Breeding Station. Egg laying was observed in ten females out of 14,

from April 30 through August 10. In total, 82 eggs have been laid (clutch sizes varied

between 4 and 16 eggs). Chicks have hatched only from the clutches of three adult

females; eggs of the other females were either infertile or defected.

As in previous years, the eggs were incubated by the females and removed

from the clutches and put in the incubator after pipping. After the water test, the egg

shell was slightly nagged around the surface with the use of a manicure nail file, to

make it easier for the chick to hatch. Keeping, nutrition, and raising methods for the

white-headed duck are under development. Potential release sites have been selected

for future reintroduction program aimed at the supplementation of the wild

population.

5. Conservation of cranes in Eurasia

In 2016, the activity in a number of areas was carried out under the Program.

Breeding of rare cranes of the Palearctic (the Siberian crane, the Japanese

crane, and the white-naped crane) was achieved at 23 zoos. In total, 25 female

Siberian cranes have bred and 15 young have been raised; 26 female Japanese cranes

have breed and 18 young have been raised; and 11 white-naped cranes have bred,

with 5 chicks being successfully raised. Reproduction and chick survival levels are

stable over the years. In 2016, the pairs of Siberian cranes at the zoos of Ivanovo and

Tashkent bred for the first time, but the eggs were infertile.

Exchanges of cranes between regional zoos were continued for establishing

new breeding pairs. A female of the Siberian crane was transferred from the Rare

Crane Breeding Centre of the Oka State Reserve to the Moscow Zoo; the following

zoos were involved in the exchanges of cranes: Moscow Zoo, Nikolaev Zoo,

Novosibirsk Zoo, Riga Zoo, Rostov-on-Don Zoo, Tashkent Zoo, and Oka Breeding

Centre.

Release of cranes into the wild. Reintroduction program for three crane

species was continued. On October 11, nine young Siberian cranes were transported

by motor vehicle from the Oka Breeding Centre to Astrakhan Nature Reserve and

released into the wild at the gathering grounds of waterfowl and wetland birds in the

Volga’s delta where migrating birds of the western Siberian population were seen

regularly.

In November, a Siberian crane was reported to be found dead in Ulyanovka

village (Stavropol Region) after collision with power transmission line. By the ring

number (1-379), the crane was identified as the male born in the current year. Earlier,

during a week, this young Siberian crane was seen regularly in the territory of the fish

farm where it foraged in shallow waters and neighboring area. It did not show a fear

of humans but did not let people come close (flushing distance – about 50 m).

In the spring, four young Japanese cranes were released in the protected zone

of the Khingansky State Nature Reserve. Three of them hatched from the eggs that

were transferred to the Reintroduction Centre from the Rare Crane Breeding Centre

of the Oka State Reserve and from Brno Zoo.

In May, six Japanese cranes’ eggs (two eggs from Oka Breeding Centre, two

eggs from Brno Zoo, Czech Republic, and two eggs from Olomouc Zoo, Czech

Republic) and one white-naped crane’s egg (from Olomouc Zoo) were brought over

to the Reintroduction Centre. Hatched chicks were raised at the field station of the

Khingansky State Nature Reserve. During the winter, the juvenile cranes were kept at

the field station, together with other Japanese cranes, to be later released in the

nesting grounds in the area of Amur Region.

In October, the annual health examination of the crane stock (70 birds) of

the Oka Breeding Centre was carried out by veterinarians of the Moscow Zoo (M.

Alshinetski, A. Tomashevski) and “Cobra” veterinary clinics (S. Gershov,

M. Vasina, and others). The examination included: weighing and estimating indices

of body condition, external examination, auscultation of heart and lungs, abdomen

palpation, treatment against parasites, complete blood count, clinical biochemistry,

and coprological tests, and bacteriological analysis.

During the year, blood samples from the cranes of unknown sex were obtained

for testing. Genetic analysis of the blood and tissue samples of 96 cranes belonging to

7 species was performed with the use of 10 microsatellite loci at the Vavilov Institute

of General Genetics. Sexes of 90 cranes were determined; for 27 cranes sexing was

done with the use of DNA obtained after hatching from the blood samples from egg

allantois vessels. For 15 Siberian cranes the paternity was confirmed at multiple

artificial insemination.

6. Establishing Reserve Population of the Siberian spruce grouse Falcipennis

falcipennis

The Program is a joint project of the Novosibirsk Zoo and the Karasuk

Breeding Station of the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology (Siberian Branch of the

Russian Academy of Sciences). The only captive population of grouses is kept in the

enclosure complex of the Karasuk Breeding Station, which includes five regularly

breeding species: the Siberian spruce grouse (Falcipennis falcipennis), the wood

grouse (Tetrao urogallus), the black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix), the ruffed grouse

(Bonasa umbellus), and the hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia). The Program is

coordinated and implemented under the leadership of V. Shilo, Cand. Sc. (Biol) and

S. Klimova. Contemporary geographical range of the Siberian spruce grouse is

presented by three isolated areas located on the vast territory from Yakutia on the

west to Sakhalin on the east and Primorye on the south. However, human activity in

these areas leads to the fragmentation of the species habitats. The numbers of the

birds are very low, and their populations are declining dramatically.

Establishing of the new Western Siberian wild population of the Siberian

spruce grouse. In 2016, captive breeding of the Siberian spruce grouse (Falcipennis

falcipennis) was continued at the Karasuk Breeding Station with the use of the

developed and proven husbandry methods. As before, most of the chicks were

incubated by the females and hatched in the nests. On April 21, 2016, 26

(15.11) Siberian spruce grouses were released in the tract of Peten in Maslyaninsky

district of Novosibirsk region. One month after the release, one of the birds was seen

by a local resident three kilometres from the release site. Staff of the wildlife

conservation bodies collect data on the sightings of released birds, and hunting

department is monitoring the reintroduced population, with all the data being a

subject to detailed analysis.

7. Study, Conservation, and Breeding of the Pallas’s Cat

During reporting period, great attention was paid to the implementation of the

program of in situ research and conservation of Pallas’s cats.

Staff members of the zoos of Moscow and Novosibirsk participated in the First

International Meeting on Pallas's Cat Study and Conservation in Steppes of Northern

Page 83: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

Eurasia and were appointed as the members of the Working Group that was

established in the course of the Meeting. The Meeting was attended by

representatives of the UNDP/GEF Project “Improving the coverage and management

efficiency of protected areas in the steppe biome of Russia” supervised by the

Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, Daursky

State Biosphere Reserve/DAURIA International Protected Area, Sailugemsky

National Park, Siberian Environmental Center, and International Working Group for

the Pallas’s cat.

The EARAZA Program for the Pallas’s cat arranged the purchase and delivery

of the equipment for the study of Pallas’s cats in Altai Region; three camera traps

were granted by the Program to field researcher.

Coordinator of the EARAZA Program Irina Alekseicheva participated in the

field trip to the Sailugemsky National Park. The participants of the field trip

examined the Pallas’s cat habitat and set camera traps for studying and assessing the

species population density.

Works on improving husbandry techniques for the management of Pallas’s cats

were carried out. Zoos were advised on the husbandry methods and treatment of

various diseases in Pallas’s cats.

Program participants were intensely involved in education activity. The zoos of

Moscow and Novosibirsk hold the Pallas’ Cat Day, which has become a traditional

zoo event. This event included various forms of educational entertainment where

each visitor caring for the wildlife could select interesting and engaging kinds of

activity. A set of lectures titled “Meet the Pallas’s cat or big problems facing the

small cat” was delivered in the children’s lecture hall of the Moscow Zoo; it included

interactive activities and expository feeding of Pallas’s cats. Souvenir articles such as

badges and magnets depicting a Pallas’s cat have been produced.

8. Conservation of Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards

1) EARAZA Program for Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica)

Re-election of the Committee of the EARAZA Program for Amur tigers was held in

the autumn of 2015, and six representatives of EARAZA zoos were elected the

Committee members, including Elena Ershova (Yekaterinburg Zoo) and Svetlana

Shelgunova (Leningrad Zoo). However, owing to unforeseen circumstances, Elena

and Svetlana were not able to serve as Committee members and were therefore

replaced, based on the results of elections and personal opinions of other Committee

members. Updated list of the Committee members follows:

Members of the Committee of the EARAZA Program for Amur tigers:

As of the 1st of November, 2016, the EARAZA population stood at 34.31.0

(65) animals in 27 zoos. In the reporting period, breeding recommendations were

mostly fully implemented, except for two cases when females were not able to breed

because of the old age or health problems. In 2016, there were 9 (5.3.1) births in 4

zoos (Grodno, Penza, Izhevsk, and Vladivostok). Of these, one newborn did not

survive (mother rejected the cub) and one cub was hand-reared.

Transfer recommendations were also followed successfully, with the exception

of a few cases of annoying delays that were mostly caused by bureaucratic and legal

problems associated with the procedures of international transportation. Transfer and

breeding recommendations for 2017 were circulated to the participants of the

Program in November of 2016.

2) EEP for Amur (Far Eastern) leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis)

The annual report on the EEP for Amur leopard, including information on the

current status of the EEP population, transfer and breeding recommendations, and a

brief review of the current events, was circulated to the participants of this EEP in

December 2016. The following text is just an outline of the most important

developments that took place in 2016.

Page 85: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

225

As of 1st December 2016, the population stood at 66.56.0 (122) in 42

institutions. Although the Coordinators would like to grow the population we do not

have enough holders to do so. If any zoo is able to hold more leopards than they

currently are please contact EEP Coordinators.

The current gene diversity of the population is 0.902 and mean inbreeding

coefficient stands at 0.063. The population is descended from just 13 founders, but

we do have one potential new founder, male ISB# 924 who was wild caught after

being found injured from a snare. Complications arising from his injuries meant he

could not be released back to the wild safely and he has instead been brought into the

zoo population and is currently at Moscow Zoo. He is naturally an incredibly

important animal and we all hope he will breed for the first time next year when he is

fully mature.

There has been some progress with the plan for the reintroduction and we have

been sent a protocol for review which has been drawn up by some of the Russian

partners. Building of facilities has not yet begun but it is believed that it will start in

2017, so the first leopards could be sent out in 2018. Unfortunately, the MoU is still

not signed. The Coordinators are waiting for some guidance from the IUCN SSC but

hope to be able to have the MoU signed in 2017.

9. Conservation of Rare Sturgeon Species of the Palearctic

Amu Darya Shovelnose Sturgeons. From November 8, 2015, through January 21,

2016, a planned expedition to the Khorezm oblast of Uzbekistan, organized and

funded by Aleksey V. Chernyak, the Coordinator of the EARAZA Program for

Conservation of Rare Sturgeon Species of the Palearctic, was carried out for

rendering assistance to the Khorezm Mamun Academy in Khiva in increasing the

existing reserve population of the large Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon

(Pseudoscaphirhynchus kaufmanni) and establishing a reserve population of the small

Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon (Pseudoscaphirhynchus hermanni), which became

possible due to obtaining a license for the removal of a number of individuals of both

species from the wild. Activities of November and almost all of December of 2015

yielded modest results despite the assistance of the most experienced Khorezm

fishermen. Later, we had found out that it could be associated with the hydrological

regime in the lower Amur River flow, which is affected by the operating regime of

the Tuyamuyunskaya hydropower electric station located upstream. When water

(which is clean and clear in the water reservoir of the hydropower station) is released

from the water reservoir, the water downstream purifies, and shovelnose sturgeons

that are highly adapted to living in muddy waters (which is evident from the

appearance of these fishes featuring a lack of pigment, very small eyes, and

extremely wide nasal aperture) are trying to leave the areas with clear water, probably

swimming to deep waters where they can not be caught in the fishing net. By the end

of December, the hydropower station stopped releasing water, and the waters

downstream became notably less clear. Besides, there were fewer sunny days in late

December. In this short period, we managed to achieve a success. We had caught

Page 86: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

226

nine large (about 500 grams) individuals of the “broad snout” form of the large Amu

Darya shovelnose sturgeon, one large (over 100 g) specimen of the “narrow snout”

form of the large Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon, and one adult individual of the

small Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon. All sturgeons were released in the pools with

cold water (+9oС to +10

oС) in the building of the Khorezm Mamun Academy. For

this purpose, the Khorezm Mamun Academy acquired four additional plastic fish

pools (now there are 7 pools), and we provided the Academy with the equipment for

life support system and practical assistance in mounting the equipment for new pools.

For learning Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon husbandry techniques, employees of

the Tashkent Zoo visited the Mamun Academy. In April of 2016, the Academy

transferred a few large Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeons to the Tashkent Zoo;

unfortunately, later the sturgeons died from unknown causes.

Preliminary assessment has shown that the sturgeons, for which we counted as

potential males could be represented by the following individuals (analysis of some

samples of gonad tissues supported our suggestions): (1) juvenile females that are not

able yet to produce mature eggs and will be able to spawn after one to three years (we

do not know at which age and weight individuals of the “broad snout” form of the

large Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon become mature); (2) females that did

spawn last spring but are still too young for producing mature eggs (we are not aware

of the length of the spawning cycle of shovelnose sturgeons); (3) immature males; (4)

males that were kept at the temperature of +20-21°С, which caused the processes in

the testicles that led to the cessation of spermatogenesis; and (5) males that

participated in the last spring’s spawning but did not complete spermatogenesis.

Options 4 and 5 are speculative, but we should consider all possibilities, since even

when we had a large number of individuals in Tadjikistan in 2012 and 2013, we did

face problems with “working” males, and besides, the biology of the Amu Darya

shovelnose sturgeon is poorly studied. In particular, we thought that unsuccessful

breeding results in the males could be caused by low temperature of water in

Vakhsha River in late April and early May (+15-16°С), but we observed same results

under the temperatures that gradually reached + 20-21°С and were maintained at that

level during 10 days, though the number of individuals was much smaller. Probably,

we needed to increase the temperature up to +20°С, but do it quicker (in a week) after

the temperature reached + 16°С.

More background data are necessary for further studies for the development

and implementation of the program of Amu Darya shovelnose sturgeon conservation

in the Amu Darya River downstream (inner part of the territory of Uzbekistan, the

segment from Tuyamuyunskaya hydropower electric station to Amu Darya’s delta).

10. Sexing birds with the use of PCR method (Polymerase Chain Reaction)

Under the Program, the following activities were carried out by

Olga Nesterenko, researcher of the Moscow Zoo:

PCR method was used for sexing birds from the following zoos: Yakutsk (2

sp.), Almaty (12 sp.), Nikolaev (4 sp.), Novosibirsk (9 sp.), Nishny Novgorod

Page 87: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

(8 sp.), Izhevsk (6 sp.), Ivanovo (14 sp.), Yerevan (3 sp.), Tashkent (7 sp.), and also

from “Vorobyi” Bird Park (4 sp.) and Rare Crane Breeding Centre of the Oka State

Reserve (17 sp.).

Totally, 86 birds of 17 species kept at 11 zoos were sexed.

An article titled “Whether the Living Conditions May Influence the Sex of the

Bird Offspring” was written for the “Biomolecule” on line popular science magazine

(authors: O. Nesterenko, T. Kashentseva; the article is available at:

http://biomolecula.ru/content/2068). The authors were awarded with the prize of

editorial board and received an offer of further cooperation).

An article titled “The Sense Organs of Birds” was written and published on the

site of the Moscow Zoo.

11. Under the Project for Reintroduction of the Przewalski’s Horse in Orenburg

Region, the Moscow Zoo and other EARAZA member zoos participate in the

creation of the Przewalski’s Horse Breeding Station.

Orenburgsky State Nature Reserve was established in 1989 for the study,

conservation, and restoration of the unique natural steppe ecosystems. The Reserve

includes five areas located in various regions of Orenburgskaya oblast, totally

covering 38,191 ha. The Reserve is managed by the “Reserves of Orenburzhye”

Federal State Budgetary Institution.

In 2015, Minprirody of the Russian Federation with the support of the Russian

Academy of Sciences and UNDP/GEF/EU Project developed and initiated

implementation of the first Russian project for restoration of the wild population of

the Przewalski’s horse. Under the Project, the territory of the Orenburgsky State

Nature Reserve was expanded due to the inclusion of the “Preduralskaya Steppe”

area covering 16,538 ha where Przewalski’s Horse Reintroduction Centre was built.

On October 18, 2015, six Przewalski’s horses were brought to the Orenburgsky

Reserve from La Tour du Valat Biological Station (Station Biologique de la Tour du

Valat, France). The animals were given to the Reserve gratis due to the support of the

TAKH Association (TAKH Association pour le Cheval de Przewalski, France).

Adaptation of the horses to steppe environment lasted one year and was carried out

under the supervision of Russian specialists. On October 3, 2016, all six Przewalski’s

horses were released into the wild in Preduralskaya Steppe area. Prior to the release,

the whole area of 16.5 thousand hectares was fences. The total length of the fence

perimeter is 52 km.

At least 30 founders of various genetic lines should be brought to the Reserve

for establishing self-sustainable wild population of the Przewalski’s horse. On

November 20, 2016, 14 transport crates containing Przewalki’s horses arrived to

Preduralskaya Steppe area from the Hortobady National Park in Hungary. The

animals were presented by the horses divided into two groups: a group consisting of

young mares and one breeding stallion (9 horses in total) and a bachelor group of 5

stallions. The release of the animals into acclimatization corrals was carried out in

two stages: first, the animals of the bachelor groups were released into the corral with

Page 88: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf36-eng.pdf · In 2017, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums is celebrating

228

the area of 45 ha, and then the horses from the breeding group were released into a

corral of the similar area.

Adaptation period will last one year. Staff of the Orenburgsky Reserve will be

performing pre- and post-release monitoring of all horses, including the study of the

animals’ behaviours, feeding, parasitological status, population dynamics, etc.

The Project is scheduled to run until 2030; by that time, a semi-wild population

of the species numbering at least 100 Przewalski’s horses is expected to be

established in the Orenburgsky State Nature Reserve.
