THE move by NelsonMandela Bay Munici-pality to relieve theplight of backyardshack dwellers has

been welcomed as good news byboth the house owners and back-yard shack dwellers.

Speaking about the registrationdrive of backyard shack dwellers atBabs Madlakane Community Hallin KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage recent-ly, Executive mayor Zanoxolo Way-ile urged residents to open theirdoors to the field workers as soon asthey come to visit them from earlyNovember.He said they must give them fac-

tual and credible information in or-der to ensure that the exercise wasworthwhile.The mayor also announced the

municipality’s pursuance of level 3accreditation for housing delivery.Explaining, he said thiswouldmeanthat national funding allocated forhousing deliverywould no longer bereceived via the Provincial HumanSettlements Department.“Our field workers will be given

THE Interdenominational Afri-can Ministries’ Association ofSouthern Africa (IDAMASA) haswished Eastern Capematrics wellon their final examinations thatstarted on Monday.

These church leaders also notedthepoor state of education in themet-ro and province which, if not ad-dressed, will likely put the future ofthe present generation in jeopardy.They are calling for an urgent over-haul.

“We’d like to wish all our matricstudents well in their final examina-tions,” said IDAMASA presidentBishop Sandile Jika last week. Hesaid he believes the 60% pass ratebandied about in the province is anattainable reality despite the prob-lems in education.

EasternCape last yearhad the low-est pass rate in the country with

48.1%. About 41 metro schools gotless than the 50% pass rate.

According to Bishop Jika, his of-fice has been engaged with NelsonMandelaBay education stakeholdersto find a lasting solution to the prob-lems bedevilling education.

IDAMASA was involved in thelaunch of a quality learning andteaching programme by the Depart-ment of education in the metro.

The programme called for teach-ers to be at school, on time and teach-ing.

The chronic absenteeism of teach-ers who take unending leave, teach-ers not attending class and learnersshowing ill discipline and lack of en-thusiasm for education were notedas needing urgent attention.

“These problems will have to besorted out if the future of the presentgeneration is to be taken into cogni-sance,” said Bishop Jika.

Jika added that theyalsohadmeet-ings with ANC MP, the HonourableBen Fihla to examine education in

the metro and diagnose the prob-lems.

He added: “We acted, because wecare! The church cannot be quietwhen the future of our children islooking dim.”

This was announced during thesigningof thememorandumbetweentheMunicipality, represented by act-ing Municipal Manager Themba Ha-ni and Portfolio Chairperson forBudget and Treasury Cllr BaluNaran, with Absa’s representativesAnand Naidoo (Managing Principal)and Jules Shefer (Associate Princi-pal) at Absa Bank in Newton Park,Port Elizabeth last Thursday.

Cllr Naran represented and spokeon behalf of the Executive mayorZanoxolo Wayile who could not at-tend owing to other pressingmunici-pal matters.

According to Cllr Naran, the ap-pointment of Absa Bank is going tobenefit local residents as it will helpthe metro in its attempts to achieveits economic development goals.

The Municipal Finance Manage-ment Act (MFMA), demands that the

municipality deals with a bankinginstitution that provides the best val-ue for money. Naran added that thepartnership with Absa was indica-tive of the consumer-orientatedagenda.

The change, which is the result ofopen and transparent tendering andprocurement processes, will be in ef-fect from 1 November, said CllrNaran adding that residents whohave been paying municipal ac-counts at Standard Bank, must nowpay their municipal accounts at anyAbsa branchanduse theirmunicipalaccount number as a reference.

Absa’s Anand Naidoo thanked themunicipality for showing confidencein Absa Bank and promised to con-tinue with their CSI initiatives thatbenefit individuals and institutionsof the metro.

How is the purchase of electricity calcu-lated?

The purchase of electricity is cal-culated each month. At the begin-ning of a new month the processstarts from zero again.

) Block 1: 0 – 350 kWh will becharged at R1.0409 (VAT included)

per kWh.) Block 2: 351 – 600 kWh will be

charged at R1.2426 (VAT included)per kWh.

) Block 3: 600 kWh and up will becharged at R1.4706 (VAT included)per kWh

Will I save money if I buy bulk in amonth?

Purchase only what you need permonth as the tariff/charge is calcu-lated on your monthly usage/pur-chase. On the first day of the monthyou start at the tariff as indicated inblock 1.

Purchase enough to last themonthto ensure that you don’t end up pay-ing a higher tariff (for example Block3) for the month.

Should you require to purchaseclose to the end of the month, pur-

POLICE in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage andKamesh have raised concerns regarding thesudden increase in vehicle crimes in theirrespective policing precincts.

“It appears that in KwaNobuhle andKamesh, vehicle owners are getting hi-jacked in their driveways at home,” said po-lice spokesperson Lt Col Priscilla Naidu.

Reports regarding the modus operandi ofhijackers indicated that suspects, usually 3to 4 men, will knock on the door of a houseandwhen it is opened, they rush inbrandish-ing firearms.Occupants areheldat gunpointand only the vehicle keys are taken.“Volkswagen vehicles, especially Polo’s aremostly targeted.”

Vehicle owners and drivers are urged totake note of their surroundings. If you arereturning home late at night, circle and scantheareaquickly for anysuspiciousvehicle/sparked near your house. Keep an eye openfor suspicious looking person/s lingeringoutside.

“If you are not trusting the situation rath-er drive away and report your suspicions tothe police.

“Also do not open your doors at home toanyone, especially late at night.Manypeoplewatch television between 18:00 and 20:00 andmost of the times, the doors are closed butnot locked.”

Never leave valuable items in your vehi-cle and park your vehicle as close as possibleto the house or in the garage. Lock the vehi-cle and activate the alarm, even if you leavethe vehicle for a short period!

“When activating the alarm, physicallyinspect to see that the doors have beenlockedas thieves areusing remotes todeacti-vate alarms. When you activate the alarm,the thief immediately presses another re-mote and unlocks the vehicle.

“This trend is in operation at parking are-as of shopping centres inUitenhage,” said LtCol Naidu.

LOCAL communities are getting the ben-efits of the Community Works Pro-gramme (CWP) which is government’s in-novative programme for job creation andpoverty alleviation through the creationof a job safety net.

Organised from theWards and communityforums the CWP gives unemployed resi-dents, especially the youth, an opportunityto get working experience and the skillsneeded in the job market. They receive a sti-pend from government.

The programme, linkedwith service deliv-ery initiatives aimed at improving local com-munities, is taking place all over NelsonMandela Bay; and it is supported by theExec-utive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile.

“We do community work that includes fix-ing potholes and cleaning the streets and theenvironment. We also do gardening, paint-

ing and renovation of schools, as well asplumbing and installation of amenities andplaygrounds for crèches,” said NombuleloAfrica, a CWP Supervisor for the Ward 36Group, known as KwaDwesi 1, in Port Eliza-beth.

“The only thing we don’t do is put on tar.That’s the duty of the municipality,” ex-plained CWP member Mzamo Daweti.

The group of 25 has been cleaning eMafiniSenior Primary School in KwaDwesi andrenovating the school’s library. And sincethey started more than a week ago, a big dif-ference can already be seen in the school.

“We also assist bed-ridden patients in get-ting home-based care,” saidNtomboxoloMli-tyana. They work eight days per month butare able to offer their services even morewhen required to do so; especially for morepay,’ quipped Africa.

“Those who want our services, must knowthatwe are only a phone-call away,” she said.

SOUTH African Rugby’s biggest par-ty, the NMB SA Sevens, which willbe held at the Nelson Mandela BayStadium on 8 and 9 December, prom-ises even more fun on and off the rug-by field this year.

The NMB SA Sevens is roundthree of the HSBC Sevens World Se-ries, which kicks off this comingweekend at the Gold Coast in Aus-tralia. SARU changed the event daysof the tournament to a weekend for-mat, bringing it in line with some ofthe major Series events such as HongKong and the London Sevens.

Speaking at the launch of the NMBSA Sevens in PE last week, Andy Ma-rinos, the SARU GM for Commercialand Marketing, said rugby support-ers would definitely get full value fortheir money at that highly anticipat-ed event.

“SARU have lined up a top-classentertainment programme for oursupporters and we believe that, withthe new elements we have managedto add to this year’s programme, wewill soon establish the Nelson Man-dela Bay SA Sevens as one of thestand-out tournaments of the WorldSeries. This year we will have theParty Stand on the Lower South Tier,so we expect that area to be jam-

packed with bright coloured, fancydressed fans. On the Saturdayevening supporters will be able towatch a free music concert featuringDJ Reddy D, The Graham WatkinsProject as well as Good Luck bands.This will be exclusively for Saturdaymatch-ticket holders,” explained Ma-rinos.

Another interesting addition tothe exciting entertainment pro-gramme is the inaugural PE Tens,which kicks off on Friday 7 Decem-ber on the outside fields of the stadi-um.

Organised by former Springbokcaptain Bob Skinstad, the PE Tenshope to follow in the footsteps of thefamous Cape Town Tens, which eve-ry year attracts hundreds of socialrugby players.

In addition the SARU has keptticket prices for the tournament un-changed from last year. Ticket pricesfor Saturday are as follows: UpperTier R80, Lower Tier R120 while pre-mier seating on the Main Stand costsR250. The different admission pricesfor Sunday are: Upper Tier R100,Lower Tier R150 and premier seatingon the Main Stand R300.

of October, MONA is gearing up formore sport involvement which willkeep the young participants busy.The tournament will end what hasbeen a good year for the association.

MONA spokesperson WayneViviers said they held the heritagetournament during the school vaca-tioninOctoberbecausetheirplayersare school learners.

“Since our players still attendschool, we tried to finish off theleaguegamesintimefortheprepara-tions for the final examinations,” ex-plained Goniwe who is also a Trans-net employee. Goniwe said since theadvent of MONA, there had been apositive change in the way mostyoung girls in Motherwell behaved.

“They go to school during theweek, go to the gym after school anddo their home work. They playleague games on Saturdays whilesome go to church on Sundays and/orspendtherestof thedaywiththeirfamilies,” said Goniwe.

ONE of the country’smajor build-ing supplies stores, Build It,based in Motherwell, once againinjected funds towards the devel-opment of grassroots’ footballwhen it hosted the MotherwellFootball Association (MOFA) U-13 Annual Tournament at NU 8Community grounds on October14.

According to Motherwell Build Itowner, Sibongile Nkebe, their pri-mary objective is to plough back intothe community and to encourage the

youth to participate in sport.“As long as Build It is in Mother-

well, we will definitely host the MO-FA Build It Tournament and there isa healthy relationship between MO-FA and us. After all, business doesnot exist in isolation,” said Nkebe.

The tournament started with aknockout system. In the semi-finalsYoung Romans booked themselves aberth in the finals when they devas-tated Young Swallows 3-0 while Va-lencia won on default because theiropponents Tomorrow Stars fieldedan over-age player.

In the finals Young Romans beatValencia 2-0 following well-takengoals by Wandile Kaleni and Xhanti-

lomzi Mzimela.Romans received a floating tro-

phy, 16 miniature trophies, balls, aset of kit, 16 sport bags and water bot-tles. Valencia received 16 miniaturetrophies, 16 sport bags and waterbottles.

In the individual awards, Romansplayers Lindokuhle Olayi (goalkeep-er) and Wandile Kaleni (top goalscorer) received R250 voucher eachwhile their best player, Anelisa Maz-izi, was awarded a 2013 school uni-form. Coaches and referees receivedkits.
