THE Youth Wage Subsidy Bill was passed inParliament last week aimed at addressing thehigh unemployement among the youth by giv-ing a subsidy to companies which employ them.

. “Yes, it will give our youth a better future. Butin the same vein, we should guard against send-ing young people to work over getting furthereducationandtraining,”saidIthembelihleCom-

bined High School Principal Phumla Mavikela.. Kwazakhele High School principal MkuseliKungwayo was afraid of this leading to the youthfinding more job opportunities than their fa-thers. He believes that the fathers would losetheir dignity as breadwinners, he said. “Let ushope that this is not going to keep the elderly outof work. People need jobs, so opportunities mustbe for all and not for a select few. I’m afraid thiscould lead to a breakdown in family units,” saidKungwayo.

. “I hope this does not make our youth idle andthink only of earning money instead of studyingfurther. For me, this is just a short-term solutionwhich will not solve the problem. It’s like givingthe youth fish instead of teaching them how tofish,” said Lwandlekazi High School principalBoyce Klaas. Klaas thought that the bill short-circuited the youth of this country and fearedthat it could open an opportunity for child la-bour.. Loyiso High School principal Phumla Hopa did

not believe the Youth Wage Subsidy was a goodidea. “Government should rather build well-re-sourced schools as centres of excellence - withwide career options. Government must bringback technical schools to ensure that we getmuch needed skills instead of focusing on aca-demic oriented subjects in schools. Our youthneed skills to increase their chances of employa-bility - or for self employment,” said Hopa, add-ing that reducing retirement age from 65 to 60could also assist in job creation.

NELSON Mandela Bay schools are showing great opti-mism as the Grade 12 final examinations continuedunabated this week.

Examinations were going smoothly and schools areexpecting to reach the Provincial Education’s targetof a 70% pass rate or more.

“Examinations are going on smoothly. Our learnersare highly motivated as their teachers did everythingin their power to ensure that we get the 90% pass weset for our school this year,” said Ithembelihle Com-prehensive High School principal Phumla Mavikela.

Mavikela said they had one learner who registeredfor writing matric examinations but could not writeowing to personal reasons.

“We’ve done everything that we possibly could asteachers to prepare the learners for these examina-tions, like any other year. Pity though, that the learn-ers we have this year will not be the same as the learn-ers of yesteryear, when it comes to dedication andcommitment to study. We have, however targeted a70% pass and are hopeful that we can achieve it,” saidNdzondelelo High School principal Mnakwazo Groot-boom.

Tinarha High School principal Sebenzile Sibaca wasalso hopeful of a 70% pass rate for his school’s matrics.“Our children are writing and they look positive forthe 70% pass rate target we have set for this year. Sincethe start of the exams, after writing their papers, theyhave been coming out upbeat and hopeful of havingdone well. They seem happy,” said Sibaca.

Lwandlekazi High school principal Boyce Klaas saidas they are currently in the Matric Intervention Pro-gramme (MIP) they were prepared for the examina-tions and will get at least more than a 50% pass.

Newell High School’s Media Liaison Officer MbuleloMpontsi was also hopeful that his school will improveon last year’s 57.7% pass rate because of the extra workteachers and learners put into this year’s examina-tions.

“We’ve targeted a 70% pass. We’ve got dedicatedteachers who gave their all to help our learners im-prove on last year’s results. We get assistance fromTransnet and also from the Nelson Mandela Metropol-itan University in Maths and Science teaching so thereis no way our learners cannot do well,” said Mpontsi, adding that some of their dedicated teachers were alsoasked by nearby schools to assist in key Learning Are-as like Maths, Physics and Life Sciences.

Kwazakhele High School principal Mkuseli Kung-wayo said his school was visited by the Departmentof Education’s Monitors who were satisfied with theirmanagement of this year’s examinations.

“The monitors did not find any irregularities andinstead commended us for doing a good job. That hasencouraged us more. Both learners and invigilatorsare managing their time well and doing everythingaccording to the letter. We are very hopeful of any-thing between a 60% and 70% pass, which is of coursehighly ambitious from the 57% of last year,” saidKungwayo.

“The breakfast helped the church raiseenough funds to start its developmentprojects of education, evangelism and eco-nomic development as set-out by AMEBishop Rhymica Davids Jr,” said ReverendNomaphelo Myathaza. The event was themed “No longer the

same” based on the scriptural periscope of2 Corrinthians 5:17 which reads “There-fore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new crea-

tion; old things have passed away, and looknew things have come,”.PE Express Indaba reporter and Pastor

at Corban Gospel Ministries, Nceba Dlad-la, was the guest speaker and spoke aboutthe importance of the church – the body ofChrist – being united.“The spirit-filled church is purpose driv-

WITH a little help from the good samaritans,Nelson Mandela Bay’s Real City Football Club(FC) could be playing in the elite footballleague within the next two years.

That is according to the Motherwell Town-ship’s Real City FC’s president Vusumzi Gele-ba.

He was speaking during the Nelson Mande-la Bay’s Department of Sports, Recreation,Arts and Culture (DSRAC) hand-over of track-

suits and Golf shirts last Friday to the clubthat won promotion to the SAFA Second Divi-sion after walloping opposition in Play-offs asthe SAB League winners in June.

“We are hoping to win promotion this sea-son to the First Division and proceed to thePremier Soccer League in the following sea-son,” said Geleba who pin-pointed some of theteam’s successes that included winning MO-FA Leagues, the Mayor’s Tournament, theEaster Tournaments and a number of awardsand silverware as the Most Successful Teamin the metro.

Their promotion to the semi-professionalleague was no fluke, he said.

There were however, challenges that madeit a little difficult for the team whose membersare mostly unemployed.

“Without sponsorship, we’ll struggle to goto the away matches against teams from as faraway as the Transkei, Queenstown and EastLondon. We have to travel as far as Lusikisiki,Kokstad and Dutywa for some of the matchesas some teams come from there,” said Geleba.

“Ourofficewill provide the teamwith trans-port for the first few away matches. However,

we cannot guarantee that this will continueforever. The Department cannot be seen to besupporting one team,” said DSRAC MandelaBay Assistant Director Mwelase Mboxela, adding that the team should seek sponsorshipto ensure that they have a sustainable trans-port arrangement for their away matches.

Geleba appealed for assistance.“We wish good Samaritans will come and

assist us.Weare adedicated teamwho’llmakesure that the metro does have a professionaloutfit in the not too distant future,” said Gele-ba.

THE main bout of Silindokuhle Boxing Pro-motions tournament at the Jeff MasemolaSports Centre, KwaNobuhle this Saturdaywill be a 10-round affair for the vacant East-ern Cape Lightheavyweight title betweenchallengers Lesley Hope and Leon Mriba.

It is, however, themain supporting bout forthe vacant EP Miniflyweight title over 8-rounds between challengers Siyabulela Khu-phiso and Lonwabo Roboshi that has drawnmuch interest in this Department of Sports,Recreation, Arts and Culture bankrolledtournament. The fight has divided KwaNobuhle into two

as the others feel that the younger Roboshi(23) will be too quick and powerful for the old-er Khuphiso (30), the former EC Minifly-weight champion.Khuphiso’s fans, on the other hand, claim

he’ll be too experienced for Roboshi who stillhas much to learn.“We are well prepared for the fight. It won’t

go the full distance. Khuphiso must knowhe’s going to fall against the youthful andmost powerful Roboshi,” said Roboshi’s men-tor Stone Nawule.Roboshi has 9 fights, 7 wins (KO6) and 2

losses.“We hear they’ve been saying they’ll beat

Khuphiso. They are dreaming. We’ll exposethem as still wet behind their ears. Khu-phiso is looking past this fight as there arebigger and better things for us in the newyear,” said Mazizi Vumazonke who looks af-ter the interest of Khuphiso with 18 fights,15 wins against three losses.According to Silindokuhle Boxing Promo-

tions boss Sibongile Nkebe, the encounterwas deemed a title fight in order to redeemthe status that elevated local boxers amongtheir counterparts from across the prov-ince.“We wanted our boxers (in the Nelson

Mandela BayMetro, theMakana and theNd-lambe Local Municipalities) who fight un-der Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Man-dela Bay region to get recognition amongtheir peers in the province,” said Nkebe, adding that they were hoping the winnersof these titles would get a better rating. There will be six more bouts including

two involving women. The first bout startsat 5pm.Weigh-in will be at the Lovelife Y-Centre

from 5pm.Admission is R40 for adults, boxers and

children R20.
