Grandfather Lewis, a jazz/soul musician and performer, tap dancedhis way around the World into his 80th year and Dad Paul isfamous for revolutionising the sound of pop music in the ‘80s,following his 1985 smash hit ‘19’.

Max has been careful to learn her craft and was determinedfrom an early age to be musically self-sufficient, setting upa studio in her bedroom and teaching herself to mastera professional music program. Composing, performingand mixing tracks herself, it wasn’t long before hertalent was picked up. She has written, sung andremixed for dance labels including Hed Kandi,Ministry of Sound, Pacha Recordings, CNR andDiscopolis. She has also released Chill Out andSmooth Jazz records on Trippin’ ‘n’ Rhythm andHardcastle Music, collaborating with her Dad andhitting the number 1 spot on the American Billboardchart. Her very first remix ‘Into the Blue’ signed to PachaRecordings this year, was played on Kiss 100 by JustinWilkes and the Andi Durrant Show on Capital Radio.

Her track ‘Summer Love’ on which she sings has recentlyhit the Upfront Dance Charts and she also features on

her Dad’s latest Chill album ‘19 Below Zero’, onUniversal Records.

Over the past couple of years Max’s DJing careerhas been every bit as diverse as her song writing.Resident at the exclusive Light Bar in St. MartinsLane and the Zander Bar in Westminster, she hasentertained at a host of celebrity hang-outs notonly in London, but also around the globeincluding; Spain, Ibiza, Malaysia, the Maldives,Jordan and Lithuania amongst others.

What many may not realise is her love forUnderground Electronic Dance Music and you arejust as likely to catch her at a warehouse party in EastLondon playing to devout music lovers, or of courseon her weekly slot on Passion FM.

Music is Maxine’spassion - it’s inher genes. ‘

Interview Cont.

iN: Max, you were DJing at KM5 Ibiza this summer, how did itgo?

Max: I was really excited to be heading back to play at KM5. It’s one of my favourite places on the Island, so a four hour set for‘Ladies Soul’ run by the beautiful Monica Mira was a real treat, especially getting to play in the Garden Lounge with beautiful dancers and a live vocalist. It was also streamed live on Ibiza Sonica Radio, which recently won ‘best international radio’. So many DJs I look up to play on that station. After my radio interview I headed into the club for my second set where we took things up a notch or two, getting the crowd updancing until the early hours.

iN: You’ve DJ’d in some pretty exotic places, have you got a favourite?

Max: I’ve had some amazing experiences so far. Playing on the beach to thousands in Malaysia was like a dream! I would have to say that the best so far is playing the Maldives alongside my brother, Paul Hardcastle Jnr on Sax. I’m hoping to play there again before the year is out.

iN: How did the DJing come about?Max: I was singing in Pacha for Hed Kandi and just thought I’d love

to be able to be behind the decks playing my music to people. It was a wacky idea, seeing as I’d never touched a pair of decks before, but I was determined to do it. I remember the first gig I played at and I was ridiculously nervous – it suddenly dawned on me what I had let myself in for. I didn’t enjoy that first time at all.

iN: Your brother Paul Jr is currently carving out quite a careerfor himself too. Do you ever get to perform together?

Max: We get to play together quite often on the club circuit and it was fun having him play with me on my radio show. We read each other well when performing – I’m looking forward to the events that we are booked together for next year already!

iN: A little bird tells us that you wrote your first song at the age of four. With life so busy how do you manage to carveout time for composing?

Max: Ha, yes that song! It’s worth keeping for comical value; it was hard for Mum and Dad to shut me up, even then! I must admitI don’t know whether I’m coming or going most of the time! A weekend after gigs and the studio does take its toll. But the truth is I love working, I’m up at seven every morning and am always busy. If I wasn’t running around like a headless chickenI would be bored!

iN: Does your Dad comment on your song writing or try to offer advice?

Max: He’s always honest, sometimes brutally honest! But that’s how I like it and that’s the way the industry works. He finally let me remix his track ‘19’ last month and he gave me loads ofhandy tips. He’s like my 24 hour on call technician and I can repay him with cups of tea – very handy!

iN: What’s in store for 2013?Max: Definitely getting back into the studio and producing more

tracks. I’ll be DJing abroad as much as I can; I think it’s one ofthe best perks of the job! As long as I have my health, am playing the music I love... I’m happy, I see everything else as abonus.

Welcome to iN’s societycolumn, ‘Girl About Town’where socialite Carolinepolledri expresses herthoughts on Christmas andher love for Cliff Richard .

ohn Lewis have triumphed in theChristmas ad stakes. I love the way the

adverts intended sentiment is kept until thevery end. A snowman braving the elements,(including the M1), in order to purchase hissnow-wife a rather fetching hat and gloves set.Initially thinking he has abandoned his wife to seek out an adventure and new life, (I’m assuming they’re married, I’ve heard they do

things ‘proper’ these snow people), it’s only at thevery end that you realise why he didn’t look back, (which is quitedifficult for a snowman due to lack of neck movement ability). He had her in his mind the whole time.

So for me, Christmas startswith a John Lewis ad thatmakes me cry, for others itmight be something a bitmore definitive. The firstchocolate eaten for advent, the bringing down theChristmas decorations fromthe loft, the faint sound of Wizard’s ‘ChristmasClassic’ in Bluewater, theannual Cliff RichardCalendar in Clinton’s, yes,Cliff still has an annualChristmas calendar!

But whatever yourChristmas nostalgia, now isthe time to get moving.

Let us not create mad hysteria, but remember what Christmasactually means, which is -food, presents (that you canafford), The Queen’s Speech,Morecambe and Wise andtheir Christmas show, thefilm ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’,someone dropping a bomb shell in the Vic in‘Eastenders’, a Christmas

walk, Midnight Mass, wearing a mixturebetween pyjama’s and new Christmas clothes before showering,

eating chocolate for breakfast and mince pies at midnight. But above all that, it’s being with the people you love the most, forgiving the people you don’t and opening your arms to thosewho need the love you can offer. Let us not forget this!

Merry Christmas One and All!

inGreat Shape Holly House Hospital

A NEW ErA bEGINS...For HoLLY HouSEHoSPITAL

Holly House, on the High Road in Buckhurst Hill, was originally built in thelate 17th century as the home of a wealthy China merchant, beforebecoming a private hospital in 1978. The hospital might have started outwith just one consulting room, one ward and an x-ray machine but nowoffers everything patients’ would expect from a leading private hospitalincluding outpatient clinics and treatment in most medical specialties, diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy, fertility, private GP service, screening, cosmetic surgery and weight-loss surgery, whether insured or paying fortheir own treatment.

For over 30 years Holly House Hospital has been providing first-classprivate healthcare, establishing a reputation for outstanding nursing care, leading consultants and a friendly atmosphere. But, the evolution of HollyHouse continues in 2013 with the launch of a new £20 millionpurpose-built facility which includes new outpatient consulting rooms, minor treatment rooms, new dental suite, pharmacy andphysiotherapy centre alongside their fully-equipped diagnosticimaging centre. On the lower ground floor three state-of-the-art operatingtheatres, endoscopy unit and pathology lab have been relocated. Plusthere’ll be plenty more on-site car parking!

Ahead of the opening of the new facility the hospital has launched a newcorporate identity. Commenting on the new brand Phil Bates, HospitalDirector, said: ‘The creation of the new Holly brand signals a new erafor our hospital. Building on Holly’s traditional heritage, our newidentity reflects the hospital’s 30 years experience of providing first-class healthcare and friendly atmosphere, but also embodies the spiritof the new state-of-the-art premium hospital we are becoming. Acontemporary design ethos of simple, understated quality has drivenour £20 million expansion and redevelopment programme and, as thephysical structures are changing, so too is the way we think about theevolution of service.’

As Holly House Hospital enters this new and exciting era, the goal is tobuild on the past and exceed all expectations for the future by deliveringexcellent patient care and service in a superb new facility.

t is nearly uponme, the day thatI have been undulyanticipating sinceJanuary. And like asentence it hascrept up on me,looming like ablack cloud on arainy day. So whatis it about the big40? I didn’tunderstand it orhim, as myhusband enteredthe same stage. I dismissed him as‘boring’, andneeding his ‘pipeand slippers’. Ittoo, like him, has

stolen eleven months of my life. I have not wanted to do anything or beanyone. Life stopped. The party was over. The ‘up for anything girl’ hadleft the building.

However, just maybe the anticipation is for the day after, the forty plusone. And maybe on this forty plus one day I will morph into a moremeaningful, wiser person. Full of confidence and charisma, no longerconsidering a double take as I pass my reflection in a shop window. Iwill feel like me again. The person pre four children, business, two dog’sand husband. Order unrelated. I no longer need to hide. I’m in. I’vejoined the club. Initiation is over. I passed!

So now I am here, I can reflect on my forty years and what I'velearnt along the way, and share with you what I shall call my‘Lessons in Life’.

• Never underestimate a friendship or take it for granted. Always be honest, upfront and measure friendship on how special that person makes you feel.

• Treat people how you would like to be treated, unless they are selling you something. Only then test their ability and measure theirtalent, strike a deal.

• Put your family before anything and anyone.

• Think before you say yes and ask yourself: ‘would they do it for you’? Let the answer guide your decision.

• Never trust any one in business.

• Never say never, just ‘not at the moment’.

• It is better not to act, but to anticipate your actions, then act.

• There are moments when saying less is more.

• And lastly life stops at thirty-nine plus one and re starts at one after forty!

• 4 large scallops• 500 ml vegetable nage• 70 grams lemon juice• 10 grams salt• 150 grams olive oil• 5 Jerusalem artichokes• Salt and Pepper to season

METHOD:1. Peel 4 of the artichokes and slice on a mandolin as thinly as

possible.

2. Place all ingredients in a sous vide bag (not the scallops). Then boil a large pan of water. If you do not have a sous vide bag, putall the ingredients into a pan and bring to the boil.

3. Put the sous vide bag into the water and boil for 6 mins. Remove the bag and leave to cool. Use after a minimum of 1 day marinating (so as a time buster... prep the day before).

4. Pat the scallops dry with kitchen paper, season lightly (salt and pepper) and sauté in a hot pan until beautifully caramelised on both sides.

5. Squeeze a little lemon juice over them.

6. Slice the remaining artichoke on the mandolin deep frying to make crispy artichoke.

7. Serve with the scallop, one per starter, with the marinated artichokes and also the crispy artichokes for decoration.

iN Tribute ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’

iN Magazine and hundreds of friendsand well wishers paid homage to

Sarah Boyton and her family, as shesaid goodbye to her seventeen year old,

cheeky, red headed boy.

I am sure many of you who will bereading this will be stunned how

something so tragic can happen to one ofour own. Sarah Boyton, was the drivingforce behind the advertising revenue atiN Mag for many years, much loved by

all iN Magazine clients and her iN Magazine family.

West Ham devotee Jack Boyton had onlyjust passed his driving test a few weeks

previously and as he collected his new car,he made the journey to meet his Mum

from work. Jack never arrived.

Jack wasn’t a silly or a troublesome boy,Jack was one of the good kids of today.Hard working, polite, a real credit to

both Sarah and her ex-husband MichaelBoyton. Jack was one of those kids thatknew in life, you only get out what you

put in. He worked at Faces in Hoddesdon as their head Pot Boy, andhad just secured a full-time position in

an Estate Agents.

He always spoke with such love anddevotion about his Mum, Sarah, saying,

‘Don’t you worry about anything Mum, I’mgonna look after you.’ And if you knewJack, he never made half promises! He

was destined to do well in life, he couldsell anything! ‘A chip off the ole’ block’,

Sarah would say.

Our love, thoughts and heart felt wishesgo out to Sarah and her family at thissad, painful time. If you would like tosend Sarah a card, please send them to

the iN Magazine office and we willforward them on your behalf to Sarah.

Rest in peace Jack.

inMotoring RuSSELL CAMpBELL TESTSvAuxHALL'S nEw nuMBERCRunCHER - THE ASTRA vxRWith 276bhp and 295Ib ft, of torque, the new Astra VXR is one of the

most powerful front-wheel-drive cars ever to be sold in the UK. It gives, what is outwardly a standard ‘hatch, performance that ten years ago would have been verging on supercar territory.

There are supercars now that would be hard pushed to keep up with theVauxhall given real-world conditions - it can hit 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, keepgoing until 155mph and it isn’t wide, hard to see out of or fragile.

From the outside, there’s plenty of hints to its performance aspirations. It’s based on the three-door GTC coupe, itself a pretty enough car, but in VXR guise - and with the £1000 Aero Pack - the VXR looks mean.

That’s thanks to bling-tastic 20-inch forged alloy wheels, a VXR bi-plane spoiler and side skirts. They add welcome visualwallop to the car’sclam-like stance,hungry-lookingfront air damand twinexhausts.

Inside, there’s much of the same appeal masquerading in a VXR-logoed sportysteering wheel and gearstick, alloy-finish pedals and VXR graphics on the sat-nav, but the most obvious change is the addition of body-hugging sports seats.

Aside from that, it is business as it is usually done in Vauxhall’s smallhatchback, so plenty of space for four a decent boot and room to squeeze afifth person in if needed.

There’re also plenty of toys including electric everything, the aforementionedsat-nav with a decent stereo, air-con and iPod connectivity.

Words by Russell Campbell

RENAULT Twizy’S THE FuTuRE

With most car makers trying to make their electric vehicles appearexactly the same as their petrol equivalents it’s nice to see Renaulttry something different with the Twizy.

Whether you can call the Twizy a car is open to debate, yes it has fourwheels and yes you’ll need a driving licence to use it, but it doesn’t havecomplete protection from the elements or the ability to roam further thanthe city.

The beauty of the little EV is you don’t expect it to. Styling wise it lookslike nothing else on the road with hints of car, scooter and quadbike allthrown into one. It is space age and cool, perfect for the young citydwellers you’d expect to buy it.

As with outside, the interior is a mix of the conventional and the extremelyunconventional. While the steering wheel could have been prised from awritten-off Laguna, there are (depending on specification) no, or noproper doors. Seating is another oddity, with the passenger positionedbehind the driver.

With a range of 60 miles (claims Renault) leaving the city’s best avoided, but with 20bhp and a top speed of 50mph it’s perfectly happyscampering through the urban wilderness.

Being battery powered means the little Renault’s weight is kept lowbeneath the driver meaning it should corner with aplomb, while the opencockpit will no doubt add to any sense of speed.

And if you like the sound of that the Twizy is relatively cheap to own.Prices start at under £7000 with a £45p/m battery rental charge and one full charge should only cost a £1.

Has Renault found the future? We certainly think they’ve got close.

While the interior is well kitted out, it doesn’t have the same logicallayout and hewn-from-grantie feel as the class leader in thesedepartment's - VW’s Golf. But with a list price of just under £27,000the Astra will significantly undercut the VW’s GTI.

Power has never traditionally been a problem for the VXR, the old onehad plenty, its difficulty was putting that power on the road. This blunt-instrument status was something the firm was keen to shake offbecause the new car has many noteworthy additions such asHiPerStruts suspension that should limit torque steer (unwantedsteering tug under acceleration) a mechanical Limited Slip Differential(to help the front wheels find grip out of the corners), FlexiRideadjustable dampers, stiffer springs, Brembo brakes and feel-somehydraulic steering.

The result is one of the best drivers cars in its class. Corners areapproached at breakneck speed accompanied by a rushing inductionnoise, momentum is scrubbed off easily on the brakes and thesteering gives you the confidence to exploit the tyres’ considerablegrip on the way in. Coming out, the LSD bites into the road, catapulting you out of the corner and on to the next dose of hardacceleration.

The Astra a perfectly biddablemachine if you’re not in the mood, though. FlexiRide means it can bestiff when you want it or softwhen you don’t and it’s a goodsystem with three optionsComfort, Sport and VXR.

Selecting VXR - effectively all-out-attack mode - stiffens the suspension(but not too much), sharpens the thethrottle response and, just so know it

means business, changes the instrument’sglow from white to red.

What isn’t quite as much fun is the VXR’s economy. The firm quotes acombined figure of 34.9mpg, but on our test - admittedly a spiritedaffair - the tank was nearing empty at less than 300miles. Tax,meanwhile, is £250 for the Astra’s 189g/km CO2 rating.

So should you buy the Vauxhall over its rivals such as the RenaultsportMegane, the VW Golf and the Focus ST?

Yes, would be the simple answer. The Vauxhall undercuts similarlyspecced Golfs and the Meganes for price, and is more powerful thanall of them. What’s more impressive is that the Astra is about morethan just figures on paper, as a package it works; it’s genuinely fun todrive, looks good, is practical to live with and very fast. To dismiss itwould be mad.

A friend of mine, who runs his own limited company, told me that his business pays for hispersonal life assurance rather than having to add to it from money he has been taxed on. Can this really be true?John Snow, Loughton.

Yes, this may well be the case. It sounds like yourfriend is referring to a ‘Relevant Life Policy’ which is a policy that is taken out by a business to coverthe life of an employee of the firm.

There are several tax benefits with this type of policyarrangement. Rather than paying the premiums personally withmoney that you have taken out of the business, and thereforealready paid tax on, the business will be paying the cost from itsgross income. Although the business is paying and the sumassured would go to your family, there is also no liability as abenefit in kind. Not only will you save the tax by not having totake the money out of the business personally; but the premiumswill also be treated as a business expense and can be offsetagainst any profit. This double benefit can total a tax saving ofbetween 35% - 50% of the true cost of the premiums dependingon your own income tax band.

For those with a large level of pension savings, it’s also worthnoting that unlike a traditional ‘death in services’ or group lifeassurance scheme with a relevant life plan, the benefit does notcount towards your pension lifetime allowance. This in turn allows you to take full advantage of the tax relief available ofpension savings, up to the current lifetime allowance of £1.5M.

The type of cover available under the relevant life definition is simple life cover only, so may not be suitable for allcircumstances, but it is certainly a very tax efficient way toprovide a lump sum should the worst happen.
