Economics: Hey, Al! What are we going to

learn today?

We will learn about 5 key economic terms all historians should know!

Page 4: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Review Economics Word of the Day:

Scarce/Scarcity

Shortness of supply; not enough

When resources are scarce,

prices increase or go up

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS WHEN RESOURCES ARE SCARCE?

Page 5: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Shortage (like scarcity)

Shortness of supply; not enough

When there is a shortage of

resources, prices increase or go up

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS WHEN THERE IS A SHORTAGE?

Page 6: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Surplus

Abundance of supply; more than

enough

When there is a Surplus of

resources, prices are lowered

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS WHEN THERE IS A SURPLUS OF GOODS?

Page 7: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Opportunity Cost

What is given up when making a choice

Example: study for social studies

so you will get better grades

instead of watching TV.

Your opportunity cost or what you

lose is time watching tv

Page 8: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Opportunity Cost

What is given up when making a choice

Example: you buy chocolate

instead of a lollipop. The opportunity cost, or what you lose, is the lollipop

Page 9: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Opportunity CostExample: Spending time with a friend

instead of studying for a math test; the

opportunity cost, what you lose, is studying

for the test

CHALLENGE: WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF OPPORTUNITY COST?

What is given up when making a choice

Page 10: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Price Competition

Producers fighting for consumers’

money

When producers compete for

consumers’ money (price competition)

they lower the prices of goods to beat their

producer competitor’s price

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS WHEN DURING PRICE COMPETITION?

Page 11: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

11

Let’s Play Do You Know Your Economic Terms

To get better grades in spelling you probably have to (think opportunity cost)

a. Spend less time playingb. Spend less time studyingc. Spend more time listening to musicd. Spend more time watching television

Let’s Play Do You Know Your Economic Terms

Lil Red is at the grocery store trying to decide which bag of cookies to buy. Which factor is

most useful in helping her decide? (think shopping around)

a. The color of each bagb. The price of each bagc. The brand of cookies d. The flavor of the cookies in each bag

Let’s Play Do You Know Your Economic Terms

If the demand for a good is high, the price will

a. decreaseb. increasec. Stay the samed. What is a demand?

Page 15: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

15

Let’s Play Do You Know Your Economic Terms

If the demand for a good is low, the price will

a. decreaseb. increasec. Stay the samed. What is a demand?

Let’s Play Do You Know Your Economic Terms

Bri is selling lemonade for $0.85 a glass. Skye is selling lemonade for $0.50 a glass. What will

most likely happen to the price of Bri’s lemonade? (Think price competition)

a. The cost of Bri’s lemonade will decreaseb. The cost of Bri’s lemonade will increasec. The cost of Bri’s lemonade will stay the

samed. Bri will stop selling lemonade and sell pizza

Review: Louisiana’s History

We will review the first and second people who settled in LA and about the Louisiana Purchase of 1803!

Page 19: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Louisiana History Review

First things first, how do historians learn about history?

Page 20: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Historians Learn about History From Two Types of Sources:

Primary Sources (1st Person:) Written by people who lived during

that time.Examples of primary resources are

letters and newspaper articles from the time period.

Secondary Sources (2nd Person):Written after an event has happened.

Examples of secondary sources are encyclopedias, textbooks, and magazines

Challenge: How do historians learn about history?

Page 21: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

History of the People of Louisiana

1st Native Americans/American Indians

2nd the French from FranceAcadians: French Catholics from Canada

3rd the Spanish from Spain 4th United States of America

Page 22: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

The FIRST PEOPLE to inhabit LA:American Indians/Native Americans

How did they live: They were HUNTERS AND GATHERERS: PEOPLE WHO HUNTED, FISHED, AND ATE

PLANTS FROM THE LAND (We still do this today!)Challenge: Who were the first people to inhabit LA? How did they live?

Page 23: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

The SECOND PEOPLE to Inhabit LA:French from France and the Acadians: French

speaking Catholics from Canada

In 1755, Acadians, French Speaking Catholics were forced

to leave Canada because the Canadians didn’t like them.

They settled (or moved to) LA.

In 1682 the French came from France and traveled to Louisiana.

Why? They wanted to build a

trading post because New Orleans sits on the Mississippi River

which flows into the Gulf

Challenge: Why was New Orleans built by the French? What were the French speaking Catholics called who came from Canada and settled in LA?

Consumers: Spending Our Money WiselyHOW DO PEOPLE SPEND THEIR MONEY?

WE BUY THINGS WE NEED AND WANT!

HOW SHOULD WE SPEND OUR MONEY?

BEFORE BUYING ANYTHING YOU NEED OR WANT SHOP AROUND AND FIND THE LOWEST PRICE TO SAVE MONEY!

CHALLENGE: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE BUYING ANYTHING YOU NEED OR WANT?

Page 26: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

26

Consumers: How to Shop Around

YOU WORK HARD FOR YOUR MONEY, SO YOU BETTER SHOP AROUND!!

YOU WILL SAVE MONEY THAT WAY!

Page 27: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

27

Consumers: How to Shop Around*VISIT DIFFERENT STORES TO COMPARE PRICES (DIFFERENT PRODUCERS WILL HAVE DIFFERENT PRICES)

*LOOK ONLINE TO COMPARE PRICES (DIFFERENT PRODUCERS WILL HAVE DIFFERENT PRICES)

*FIND COUPONS TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY ON AN ITEM AND GET IT CHEAPER!

*WAIT FOR A DECREASE IN PRICE (A SALE!)

SHOPPING AROUND ALLOWS YOU TO SAVE MONEY!

CHALLENGE: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN SAVE MONEY?

Page 28: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

28

Let’s Play How Can I Save Money!!

Mr. Smith needs a new carpet for his office. What should Mr. Smith do as a wise

consumer?

a. Run to any store and buy a new carpetb. Go to different stores to compare pricesc. Keep his old carpetd. Pilfer Mr. Ruch’s carpet and save money

Page 29: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

29

Let’s Play How Can I Save Money!!

a. There is a scarcity of phonesb. Shopping around can save her moneyc. It is hard buying a new phoned. People should always go to one store to

buy a phone

Ms. Funches needs a new phone. She goes to the Apple store and learns a new phone is

$100. Then, she goes to Verizon and learns a new phone is $75. Then she goes to AT&T and learns she can get a new phone for $50 with a

coupon. What did Ms. Funches learn while shopping for

a new phone?

Page 30: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Economics Word of the Day:

Supply and Demand: It affects everything we do and it’s a cycle

SUPPLY: The amount of a good or service

available DEMAND: the number

of people willing to pay the price a

producer is asking

Page 31: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

31

Supply and Demand

Page 32: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

32

Supply and Demand

Page 33: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

How Supply and Demand Work: Low Demand

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS WHEN FEW CONSUMERS HAVE A DEMAND FOR IT?

WHEN FEW CONSUMERS HAVE A DEMAND FOR A GOOD, PRICES ARE LOWERED; THEY DECREASE

WHY? PRODUCERS LOWER PRICES TO GET RID OF THE GOOD

WHEN PRICES ARE LOWERED MORE PEOPLE BUY A GOOD OR SERVICE

WHY? IT IS CHEAP

Page 34: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

How Supply and Demand Work:High Demand

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COST OF GOODS WHEN MANY CONSUMERS DEMAND THEM?

WHEN MANY CONSUMERS HAVE A DEMAND FOR A GOOD, PRICES INCREASE OR GO UP

WHY? PRODUCERS SEE MANY PEOPLE DEMAND IT AND SO THEY WANT TO MAKE MONEY AND INCREASE THE PRICE

Page 35: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

How Supply and Demand Work:Abundance (a lot of something)

CHALLENGE: WHAT WILL MOST LIKELY HAPPEN IF THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF A GOOD OR SERVICE?

IF THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF A GOOD OR SERVICE PRICES DECREASE BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH OF IT!

WHY? PRODUCERS WANT TO GET RID OF THE EXTRA GOOD AND SERVICE

Page 36: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

How Supply and Demand Work:Competition

CHALLENGE: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PRODUCERS COMPETE FOR CONSUMER’S MONEY?

ECONOMIC COMPETITION: WHEN PRODUCERS ARE TRYING TO WIN CONSUMERS

WHY?WHEN PRODUCERS SEE A DEMAND FOR A GOOD OR SERVICE, THEY BEGIN COMPETING FOR THE CONSUMER’S MONEY.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PRODUCERS COMPETE FOR CONSUMERS?THEY OPEN SHOPS THAT PROVIDE THE SAME GOOD OR SERVICE AT LOWER PRICES.

Review: Civics

Civics: the study of government and how it runsWhy? Our government makes laws that tell us how to behave. If we break the law, there are consequences

Page 39: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

There are 3 Branches of Government

Page 40: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Branch 1: Legislative Branch* Made up of Congress(House of Representatives & the Senate)* MAKES LAWS

Branch 2: Executive Branch*Made up of the President*CARRIES OUT LAWS*MAKES SURE PEOPLE OBEY THE LAWS

Branch 3: Judicial*Made up of 9 Supreme Court Judges*EXPLAINS AND DECIDES IF LAWS ARE FAIR*PUNISHES PEOPLE WHO BREAK THE LAW

Page 41: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

How People in the Government are Chosen

They are ELECTED: *People in the government are elected by

U.S. citizens like us

*Citizens VOTE for who they want to be in the government

*Citizens VOTE during an ELECTION

People with the HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF VOTES WINS

Page 42: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

What Services the U.S. Government and State Governments Provide:

Role of the Government

Repair roads and highways for safe travel:Provide driver’s licenses

Provide schools for people to learn in: Provide resources for schools

How the Government pays for these things:By collecting TAXES from citizens, like us!

Page 43: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

What are Rights, Laws, and Rules

Rights: a freedom that is

protected

Laws: something that tells you how to

behave and are enforced by government

Rule: tells you what is or is not allowed

Challenge: How are laws different from rules?

Laws are different from rules because the government makes laws, but people and groups can’t.

Page 44: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Let’s Play A Law or Not a Law?

Do not spit.

Sing the national anthem everyday.

Speak in complete sentences.

Obey the speed limit.

Do not yell at others.

Sit in SPARK.

Hey, Ben, what are we going to learn today?

WE WILL REVIEW HOW TRANSPORTATION AND TECHNOLOGY HAVE CHANGED OVER TIME

Page 46: Ileap u6 d6 economics.geography.civics.la history

Invention: something thought of in the mind and then created in real life Why:

to improve how people live

It All Starts With Scientific Inventions

A History of Technology: The Internet

Challenge: How has the internet changed our lives?

*We are always socially connected to others: our families and friends are only an instagram

away from us

*We are connected to the world; we can find the news of what’s

happening everywhere

How has the internet changed

our lives?
