Well its almost that time of year again, the Day of the Volkswagen (DOVW) will be on next weekend (Sunday the 17th of November) celebrating the Bay Window Kombi and of course all other things Volkswagen. In addition to all the cars will be live music, rocker cover racing, swap meet and trade displays. I look forward to this great day each year and even more so this year, with the feature car being the Bay Window Kombi.

Saturday before DOVW (16th of November) will be our monthly coffee meet and the last chance to get your club permits signed and VIP sticker before the big day.

Our final general meeting for the year is also coming up on the 21st of November at the Austrian Club, so be sure to come along and catch up with your fellow club members.

PRESIDENT’S REPORTMatthew Collis VWCV President

KENNET RIVER VW CAMP OUT 29th February - 1st March 2020

A wonderful event at the picturesque Kennet River Holiday Park located 164 kms from Melbourne on the magnificent Great Ocean Road.Book your cabin early as there are a limited number available. If camping on a powered or unpowered camping site you can book a site now as the club has arranged for the park to hold a large number of powered sites for this weekend. Book before the busy Christmas/New Year holiday period.

That rounds out November and of course brings us into December and the annual club Christmas party (on Sunday the 8th) which is always a great day with live music, a visit from Santa for the kids and the Kombi Keg serving drinks. The club Committee will also be having the 2020 planning meeting on Saturday the 7th, so if you have any ideas for an event or cruise please contact a committee member and we will be happy to discuss any and all ideas.

Hope to see as many of you as possible at Day of the Volkswagen.

Keep on Dubbin’

A very laid back two days with a great surf beach right across the road.

The Day of the Volkswagen in 1994 was held on the 6th of November in the Yarra Bend Park conveniently located between Fairfield Hospital and Fairlea Womens Prison (neither which now exist) on Yarra Bend Rd. The day started at 9am for all entries, with cost per car $5 and swappers $10. Walk ins were $2 and children under 15 were free.

1994 Day of the Volkswagen merchandise consisted of T-shirts for $10, Beetle Key

Rings (Plastic) $2, Beetle Key Rings (Metal) $5 and Stickers/Programs/40th Anniversary pens all $1. This was another part of Jason and Luise’s involvement.

They had 100 cars the year before and hoping for a good turnout. Unfortunately the wind that day was described by the VWCV President, Gary Collis, as ‘certainly horrific’! But in spite of this and a certain Board of Works official (will have to find out more out about that issue) the event was called a success with costs covered for the day. The President in his final report also thanked Jason and Luise Stone for coordinating DOTVW that year, Jason was the Points Score Officer on the committee.

VWCV HISTORIAN’S CORNERPART 3 - 1994 DAY OF THE VOLKSWAGENChris Scane WVCW Historian.

Unfortunately the October Deluxe edition was so full there was no room for the important news clipping needed for this story. My apologies for the previous non-inclusion but hopefully now it will all make sense! ……..Sometimes you keep things for a good reason and although you are not sure at the time, surely it will be useful later. That’s what happened on Monday, 7th November 1994 when I opened the Herald Sun and spied Cliff Segman and his 1955 Beetle with other Beetles in the background at the 1994 DOTVW. At this stage in my life I had 3 young children under 7 years old and a very busy professional life. Little did I know that I would be writing about this event 25 years later even though I was not there on the day!

VOLKSWAGEN SHOWS OFF THIS LIFE-SIZED LEGO T2 CAMPER VANResearched by Chris Scane, VWCV Historian.

LEGO T2

Suppose when you get to Lego models this one should take the cake! It was only seems a few months ago when John Stevens did a review of the Lego T1 Kombi and that was the Wagensville News first introduction to the world of Volkswagen in small plastic bricks. There is a Lego beetle but that will be another story for a future edition of WN. Hope you enjoy it and our Bay Window Kombi year, it has been a lot of fun bringing these stories. - CS

By: Chris BruceThere’s a full interior with a sitting area and kitchenette. It’s all Lego in there, too.

Forget Lego’s impressive Volkswagen T1 Transporter kit because an even more amazing life-sized T2 camper is now on display at the F.re.e Leisure and Travel Fair in Munich, Germany. Not only does the van look like the real thing on the outside, including a pop-up roof. The interior has all of the amenities you would expect like a Lego brick kitchenette.

Certified Lego master model maker Rene Hoffmeister and Pascal Lenhard used 400,000 Lego blocks to create this full-sized T2 Transporter over the course of six weeks. They used 3d images to figure out how many bricks were necessary to complete the model, but somehow ended up being 20,000 transparent pieces short to construct the vehicle’s windows. Once they got ahold of the parts, Hoffmeister and Lenhard had to work day and night to finish the assembly.

The builders even managed to incorporate a sliding door like on the real T2 Transporter. Stepping inside reveals a bright green seating area and orange roof. It’s a very mod-style color combination that matches the van’s 1960s origins. All of the accessories inside, like the radio and tableware, are Lego, too.

The final result measures over 197 inches (5 meters) long and is 78.74 inches (2 meters) tall. Popping up the roof adds an extra 39.37 inches (1 meter) to the top. The Lego Transporter weighs roughly 1,543 pounds (700 kilograms).

It seems like someone within the VW Group has a real love of full-sized creations out of Lego blocks. For example, Bugatti unveiled a life-sized, drivable Chiron that the company built from the plastic blocks. Porsche also got in on the act with a 911 that looked like a real-life Speed Champions kit. In 2016, Porsche also made a giant version of its 911 GT3 RS Lego Technic kit.

Source: Volkswagenjust when you thought your kids couldn’t get enough playtime, certified LEGO builder Rene Hoffmeister and colleague Pascal Lenhard spent six weeks doing exactly that—and pretty much only that. Hoffmeister and Lenhard (who are adults, by the way,) used 400,000 LEGO bricks to build a life-size Volkswagen T2 campervan that’s modeled after the 1967–71 VW camper.

Unlike the actual-size Bugatti Chiron that LEGO created last summer, the VW doesn’t actually work. I’d consider that a missed opportunity, particularly for robbing people of the chance to go camping in something a lot more difficult to assemble than a tent. Although, if the stove actually worked, it would surely disturb the fresh scent of nature with an odor of burnt plastic.

Despite its lack of function, the life-size T2 is an amazing work of art—even more so when you consider that Hoffmeister and Lenhard had only six weeks to complete the project in time for the start of Munich’s f.r.e.e. trade fair on February 20. The van was unveiled earlier today, but it took a lot of overtime to complete it. Additional time was required because Hoffmeister, one of only 12

officially certified LEGO model makers in the world, and Lenhard discovered they were missing 20,000 transparent bricks for the T2’s windows, despite their planning efforts. Oops.

To make up for the lost time, Hoffmeister says, “Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week.” Since there’s no such thing, the only option was to work nights. Thanks, Mom, no bedtime!

The duo used 3-D images to produce a construction plan, which included calculating the number of bricks required. The rigidity of the side walls and windows was another important aspect to consider.

The determination paid off. The T2 is more than 16 feet long and weighs over 1543 pounds, and it includes Westfalia pop-up roof, sliding door, and interior fittings. More details can be found here.

Meanwhile, the new VW Grand California campervan will make its UK debut this week. For information visit
