To put it simply, IFTTT is a web-based task automater.


• IFTTT is an abbreviation of "If This Then That" (pronounced like "gift" without the "g").

• IFTTT is a web-based service that allows users to create chains of simple conditional statements, called "recipes", which are triggered based on changes to other web services such as Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, and Craigslist.

Can you tell me more about this “recipe”?


• An example "recipe" might consist of sending an e-mail message if the IFTTT user tweets using a certain hashtag. Or, if the user is tagged by someone on Facebook, then that photo will be added to the user's cloud-based photo archive.

Who created IFTTT?


• IFTTT was created by Linden Tibbets, Jesse Tane, and Alexander Tibbets in San Francisco, California.

Definition of Terms


Let me tell you a bit more of the terms you need to know about IFTTT.


• Channels are the "basic building blocks of IFTTT", they mainly describes a series of data from a certain web service such as YouTube or eBay. It can also describe some certain actions controlled with certain APIs like SMS. • Triggers are the "this" part of a recipe. They are the items that "trigger" the action. For example, from an RSS feed, you can receive a notification based on a keyword or phrase.


• Recipes are the "equations" made from Triggers and Actions. For example, if you like any picture in Instagram (trigger), the photo will be sent to your Dropbox account (action).

• Ingredients are basic data made available from a trigger. For example, that data that are available from the email trigger include subject, body, attachment, received date, and the sender’s address.

• IFTTT can automatically automate web-application tasks, such as posting the same content on several social networks.

Let’s start with the tutorial.


Go to Google.com.


Type “ITTTT.”


Hit Enter.


This will appear.


Click this link.


You will reach the IFTTT homepage.


Click on “Sign up.”


This will appear.


Fill in your email and desired password.


Click “Create account.”


You will be sent an activation email as in the below.


Activate to start using IFTTT.


There will be a quick introduction on how to use IFTT.


The next 5 slides will show the walkthrough.


Click the word “this”.

Click “Continue”.

There will be labels that will appear.

You will be asked to select 3 more channels.

End of the introductory walkthrough.


Let’s select Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for this tutorial.


After selecting those 3 channels, click “Continue”.


You will see this indicator status.


You will see several recommended recipes.


The “Do Recipes” tab will have sample tasks.


There are also prepared “IF recipes” in this tab.


Click on “More Recipes” near the bottom of the page to view other prepared recipes.


In the header portion, there would be different recipes depending on who are you are what your

purpose it.


The following are some examples.


Recipes for your wedding.


Recipes for baseball fans.


Recipes for a healthy lifestyle.


Recipes for parenting.


There are many more!


Just keep on exploring.


Let’s check out the suggested recipes related to social media management.

The recipes shown on the right will appear at the bottom of the image we just

clicked.


Let‘s say we want our Instagram photos to automatically be posted in Twitter.


Click this image.


You will be directed to another page and see the below.


We would need to connect the channels first.


Click the “Connect” button to the right if the Instagram icon

first.


This popup will appear.


Fill in your Instagram username and password.


Click “Log In.”


Authorize IFTTT to access Instagram.


After you authorizing IFTTT, click on “Done”.


The next channel we need to connect is Twitter.


Click on “Connect” to the right of the Twitter icon.


Enter your Twitter username and password.


Click on “Authorize app.”


Click on “Add.”


You will see a recipe ID number.


Were done creating our recipe!


Let’s create another social media recipe.


Let’s say we want to automatically share new links we post on Facebook to Twitter.


There is a prepared recipe for this in IFTTT.


But let’s try creating this recipe from scratch.


On the top portion of the screen, click on “My Recipes”.


You will see the recipes you already have on your account.


Click on “Create a Recipe.”


This will appear.


Click on the highlighted word “this”.


Type “Facebook” in the choose triger channel field.


Click on “Facebook”.


Click on “Connect”.


Authorize IFTTT to manage your Facebook page.


Click “Okay”.


Click on “Done”.


Click “Continue to the next step”.


Choose your desired trigger.


For our example, we will choose “New link post by you”.


We will be prompted to create our desired trigger.


Click “Create Trigger.”


This will appear.


Next, click on “that”.


Type “Twitter” in the Choose Action Channel field.


Click on the Twitter icon that appears.


Click the desired action which in our example is “Post a tweet”.


Click on “Create Action”.


Click on “Create Recipe”.


We’re done creating the recipe!


And that’s how you create a recipe from scratch.


You can create as many recipes as you need.
