Today is World Mission Sunday! In

announcing his decision to declare a

Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said,

“Dear brothers and sisters, I have often

thought about how the Church might

make clear its mission of being a wit-

ness to mercy.” supporting the young

churches throughout the world with

your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful

witness of this mission. The collection today will help

missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help

as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the devel-

opment of local dioceses, and support the work of

priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the

margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness

to the whole world through your gift in today’s collec-

tion for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith!

Thank you for your generosity.

The Ministry of Assistance of Holy Martyrs is now

planning for our Thanksgiving and

Christmas food baskets and gifts. If

CONFIRMATION

Our eighth graders have just begun their prepara-

tion for the Sacrament of Confirmation in Octo-

ber of 2017. Please keep these young people and

their families in your prayers. This is not an easy

decision for a 14 year old because for them it is

quite confusing as to why they are cel-

ebrating Confirmation. We know only

too well how being a Godparent or a

sponsor are great opportunities to

share in the life and faith of a young

person.

TIME TRAVELERS

It is almost that time for our new and ex-

citing adventure for the Time Travelers

(ages: potty trained to age 10) to join our

fun young people during the Liturgy of the

Word in rooms 203/204. We still need leaders for the

interaction pieces at the front of the session for each

week.

We will be sending out a new Sign-up Genius for those

who are interested in signing up for a specific week in

the months to come.

Also, we need additional adults who might be interested

in helping with this ministry. The adults who working

with the initial kick-off are in need of adults who would

be willing to become a part of the rotation. Many helpers

makes for light work.

Take Your Kids to Church

Tips For Success/Part IV (continued from last week)

Taking children to Church can, admittedly be a challenge. The following tips from, Discover-

ing God Together: The Catholic Guide to Raising Faithful Kids can help make any churchgoing

parent’s life easier.

4. Engage Them. By all means, for children under 4-ish, bring some quiet, soft, preferably religiously-themed plushes,

books, etc. Keep them in a special “going to Mass bag” that is reserved for church. That will keep these activities

special. Regardless, try to put these things away before the consecration. At the elevation, point to the host and whisper

something like, “look at the miracle! Look at Jesus. Say, “I love you Jesus!”

Don’t do Mass in shifts. If you feel you aren’t “getting anything out of Mass” when you bring small children you are miss-

ing the point. What you get is the joy of passing your faith on to them. That’s what you signed up for when you became a

Catholic parent. Yes, it can be tough, and yes, you may certainly do other things to get your spiritual needs met, but Sun-

day Mass is for your family. Go as a family.

Dr. Gregory Popcak is the Executive Director of the Pastoral Solutions Institute an organization dedicated to helping Catholics find faith-filled solutions to

tough marriage, family, and personal problems.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS for holy martyrs

Recently, Bishop Richard Lennon gave permission for Holy Martyrs to commission new Stations of the Cross for our church. Today is the first in a series explaining

this devotion and the plan to add new Stations of the Cross to our church.

Praying the Way of the Cross has a long and

honored place in the devotional life of the Church.

In the first centuries after Christ, pilgrims traveled to

the Holy Land to follow in the footsteps of Jesus to

Calvary.

During the Middle Ages, the practice of praying

the Stations of the Cross grew in popularity. St. Francis

of Assisi and the early Franciscans are credited with

popularizing this devotion.

The Franciscans promoted the use of images

depicting the Lord’s Way of the Cross in individual

churches so those who could not travel to the Holy

Land could “walk in the footsteps of Jesus” in their

own church.

Over the centuries and among widely different cultures, the Stations of the

Cross have remained a popular devotion, nurturing the spirit of prayer among people.

The Stations offer a way for the faithful to enter more fully into reflecting on the

passion and death of the Lord. In the words of the US Catholic Bishops, “They serve as

a model of the pilgrim Church on its homeward journey.” The custom of arranging the

Stations around the walls of a church marks this devotion as a true journey.

When Holy Martyrs Church was built, the decision was made not to include

Stations of the Cross in the church. Rather, a prayer path through the woods near the

church was created, including an outdoor set of Stations of the Cross.

Many people have prayed the Stations outdoors. However, Northeast Ohio

weather allows the prayer path and outdoor Stations to be used only part time. Cold,

rain and Winter snow make using it impractical for much of the year. Access is also

limited to daylight hours, so opportunities for children and youth to pray this devotion

during evening PSR have been rare.

Over the years, people who have joined our parish have asked about the lack

of Stations of the Cross in church. Long-time parishioners also have expressed a

desire for a permanent set of Stations of the Cross. It was time for Holy Martyrs to

address this need.
