From the Pastor When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi* he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Mes-siah, the Son of the living God.” Mt. 16:11-16 We live a world where confusion seems to be the norm and the truth is no longer applicable always and everywhere. How many times have we heard others say something along the lines of, "Well, that may be true for you but not for me"? Imagine if this relativistic way of thinking was used by NASA scientists before launching the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. How far would we have gone? Scientist 1: How much fuel do we need to propel the rocket and the lunar module to the moon with a launch mass of 100,756 pounds? It's 298,900 miles away after all. Scientist 2: Well those may be your calculations, but I feel it's a whole lot closer. I mean, look how big it is! The moon can't be more than 200 mile away. Since I get 48 miles per gallon in my Prius, and Toyota built some of the rocket, let's plan on using 10 gallons, 5 for each way with a little extra in case the astronauts find a Sonics drive in somewhere up there and want to stop for a break. All of this is utter nonsense as you can see but people in our day and age really do think this way. The most tragic application of this type of relativism comes when people try and apply it to Absolute Truth, God and his Divine Revelation. Which brings us to Jesus' question in the gospel: Who do people say that I am? Of course, many people had many ideas about who Jesus was. Some, like King Herod, thought he was John the Baptist risen from the dead. Others thought he might the reincarnation of an Old Testament prophet. None of which was correct. Then he pointedly asks his disciples: But who do you say that I am? And that is the question and I ask you, "Who is this Jesus?" Today, some believe him to be a really good guy, others, a prophet, others believe that he was well inten-tioned but still a nut job. If pressed, some churchgoers might actually confess that he is God, or at least a god of sorts. But the question always comes back to us: Who do you say that I am? Herein lies defining question of our existence. A thing or an idea can only be true if it actually corresponds to reality. Today, I am speaking in particular of the reality that is God. If Jesus is not truly God in your eyes then feel free to miss Mass, sin, steal, and covet and deal with the consequences later (not a position I advocate!). Without him it's every man for himself. But if he truly is God, our beginning and our end, then we must bow down before him, worship him, and give every part of our lives to him in a sacrifice of praise since he himself de-mands these things of us. I don't have enough room in this page to say all that I'd like, so here are some quotes from C.S. Lewis which I hope will illuminate Jesus' question and your response to it. I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic -- on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg -- or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. – Mere Christianity, pages 40-41. You will never know how much you believe something until it is a matter of life and death.” “If you think of this world as a place intended simply for our happiness, you find it quite intolerable: think of it as a place of training and correction and it’s not so bad.” – God in the Dock, page 52
