This weekend we welcome seminarians from Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University. They will speak at the Masses about vocations to the priesthood. They are accompanied by two priests from the seminary. WELCOME, SEMINARIANS!!!
Last Saturday we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Manny Cruz as the confirming bishop. He confirmed 74 of our young people. Both confirmations were reflections of our faith and the gift of the Holy Spirit. CONGRATULATIONS, NEWLY CONFIRMED.
In today's Gospel, Jesus proclaims the two greatest commandments which are the foundation of our lives as Catholics and Christians. They are, love of self, neighbor and God. Loving ourselves means that we are valuable creatures of God, we have certain talents and abilities, and we are able to do certain things really well. But it also means that we recognize we are sinners and can cause difficulties for ourselves and others. But God love us for who we are today, and we are called to do the same. Of course, there is always room for improve-ment, so we become a work in progress.
Once we are able to love ourselves, then we can love others. Each of us has been created by God and we are called to celebrate the uniqueness of each person. When we recognize that all of us are equal, then we are able to love God, who has given us Jesus to show us how to live and love. If we follow the example of Jesus, we will find that it is not too difficult relating to others, even if some people we meet are difficult.
Jesus calls us to love one another, and so our lives must reflect what that means, as difficult as it may be at times. We don't necessarily have to like others, but in loving them we recognize that he has filled us all with his abiding presence and love. Ultimately, our words and actions have to reflect what his love for us means.
One way we can recognize what it means is the way we care for each other and are willing to help others. When we help our family or older neighbors with chores, or tutor a student or do many other things. They all tell us that we understand the impact that Jesus has in our lives and are willing to help make his presence known to others.
In everything we do, it is always good to ask: WWJD?

Do you love to cook? We are looking to begin a new
ministry of “St. James parish friends” to help us reach
out to others who find themselves unable to prepare a
home cooked meal for themselves or for someone who
may have had a loss in their family and needs some
hospitality. If you don’t cook but would like to help
deliver these meals, we need you too! If you are inter-
ested in being a part of this ministry, please contact

RECEIVING COMMUNION
It is good to remind ourselves of the reverence need-ed when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. When we approach the altar, if receiving on the hand, please remove any gloves beforehand. Remember to bow slightly without being ostentatious and reply “Amen”. If communion runs out please wait for the Minister to return.
HOSPITAL VISITATIONS
If you or someone you know is in the hospital please inform the hospital staff that you are Catholic and a member of Saint James the Apostle Church. SCIENCE ENRICHMENT AT SAINT JAMES
We just wrapped up four Fridays of science enrichment
for students in Grades 3-5. Each week, our young
scientists engaged in inquiry and investigation.
In Week 1, students reviewed lab safety and equipment
such as beakers, test tubes and goggles. Their lesson
was about what a catalyst is in science and the differ-
ence between physical vs. chemical changes. The lesson
concluded with the creation of their own elephant
toothpaste experiment. The students enjoyed watching
the green foam appear immediately after mixing togeth-
er yeast, hydrogen peroxide, water, liquid dish washing
soap and some food coloring.
During Week 2, our students conducted a
Crystallization-Magic Growing Tree experiment. First,
they were introduced to three new science tools: a
Petri dish, pipette and a magnifying glass. The children
formed a hypothesis for their experiment and
assembled their own "magic tree" on a Petri dish,
saturating it in a “magic solution” which consisted of
salt, liquid bluing, and ammonia using a pipette.
Week 3 was all about human organs. The children
began at the hands-on sensory station where they
explored "human organs" and discussed the brain,
heart, liver, kidney, stomach, and small and large
intestines. After, they read a book How Do Your Lungs
Work? by Don L. Curry. There was discussion about
our lungs, trachea, bronchioles and bronchial tubes. Fi-
nally, the children constructed a "breathing machine"
using straws, balloons, and a plastic bottle.
Finally Week 4, it was time for exploration of blood
which was a continuation of our human organs lesson.
Students read A Drop of Blood by Paul Showers and
then moved on to a sensory station where they were
able to see and get a feel of "red blood cells" and "white
blood cells". Each child located and labeled organs in
the planning station and concluded with coloring the
human organs on aprons they were able to take home.
The next Science Enrichment program is scheduled to
begin in January for students in Kindergarten to Grade
2. A big thank you to Ingrid Battista for her time and
talent.

The next collection of non-perishable food, frozen meatloaves and sandwiches takes place the weekend of October 28/29, before the 5:00PM Mass on Saturday evening and between 10:00AM and 12:00PM Noon on Sunday, in the Gathering Area of the Church. The next sandwich collection takes place from the school kitchen (in the church parking lot by the rectory parking spaces) on Monday, October 30, between 8:00AM and 11:00AM Please note: only non-perishable food can be accepted. . This Social Concerns Group is in need of your assistance!
After almost 10 years of organizing pick-ups, drivers, deliveries and collecting canned goods as well as donated frozen meatloaves and sandwiches, Lisa Gillo has decided that it is time for someone else to head this important committee. Lisa will continue until the end of the year, but we are hoping that someone will call Fr. Joe to volunteer. Below is the schedule for collection and deliveries. If you have any specific questions please give Lisa a call.
Panera: pickup is every Sunday in Short Hills after they close at 9:00PM. A call is placed a few hours before the scheduled pick up to check for any changes. The bread is then delivered on Monday morning to St. Joe’s in Elizabeth.
Meatloaves and sandwiches are collected per the monthly schedule listed above. The Monday morning sandwich donations are left in the school kitchen from 8-10AM, then everything is packed and driven to St. Joe’s.
Without this group, many people would not have a meal to eat!
If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.

2ND INSTALLMENT OF THE SAINTS OF THE PRO LIFE MOVEMENT
St. Maximilian Kolbe (January 8, 1894 – 14 August 14, 1941) was a Polish Franciscan friar and priest who lived during the terrible years of the World Wars. Be-cause of his work resisting the Nazi regime and Free-masonry through the publication of a successful news-letter, he was sent to the concentration camp at Ausch-witz. While there he regularly offered up masses and was a great consolation to the other prisoners.
There he was subjected to special abuse because he was a Catholic priest. When a fellow prisoner (with a wife and children) received a death sentence, Father Kolbe offered to take his place. After suffering for two weeks from thirst and starvation, Maximilian was killed by lethal injection. Pope John Paul II canonized him in 1982. Saint Maximilian is the patron saint of the pro-life movement, journalists, families, political prisoners and the chemically addicted.
His feast day is August 14th.

have confronted the followers of Christ. They form the
essence of Jesus’s life and teachings and have set the
standard for holiness down through the centuries.
Over 3 nights, Fr. Albert Haase, OFM, will lead us in a
parish mission entitled THE THREE CHALLENGES
OF JESUS. We will explore how to trust and surrender
when life is not going our way, how to forgive when
hurts and grudges consume us, and how to live an au-

BAPTISM Communal Baptisms are held on various Sundays during the year at 1:30pm in the Church. Please see the dates listed below. Please contact the Parish Office for scheduling information.
RECONCILIATION Individual Confessions are heard every Saturday at 11:00am in the Church, or anytime by appointment.
EUCHARIST Communion can be brought to the sick and homebound either at home or in a facility. Please contact the Parish Office to make arrangements.
CONFIRMATION Adults who have celebrated the Sacrament of Baptism and would like to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation are encouraged to call the Parish Office and speak to one of the priests.
MARRIAGE Couples planning to marry are asked to call the Parish Office at least one year prior to their desired date so that arrangements can be made.
VOCATIONS Is God calling you to the priesthood or Religious Life? Speak to one of our priests or call the Vocations Office 973-497-4365. Please continue to pray for an increase in vocations.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK This Sacrament can be administered anytime. We make visits to area hospitals and nursing homes. Please contact the Parish Office.
THE RCIA PROCESS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process where individuals who seek to receive the Sacraments of Initiation or who have never been baptized enter into full communion with the faith. Contact the Parish Office for details.
BAPTISM INFORMATION The catechesis class begins by attending the 12:00pm Mass with instruction about the rite and its meaning following Mass. Godparents are encouraged to attend. Baptism Ceremonies are held at 1:30pm and we ask that everyone arrive by 1:15pm.
