HIGHER EDUCATION
GRADUATION CEREMONY
Welcome to the 2020-2021 Graduation CeremonyI am delighted that you are able to join us at this year’s Higher Education Graduation Ceremony, which is our first since 2018-19 as a result of the global pandemic.
The last 18 months has seen an incredible amount of change and unprecedented challenge for individuals and nations alike. No-one and nowhere was left untouched, and this includes your education.
Our event this year, then, is more than just an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students across Professional and Higher Education study. It is also a celebration of your determination, resilience and character to stand up to the odds stacked against you, and then coming out on top.
WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL
You should be immensely proud of your achievements this evening. On behalf of myself, the college governors and most importantly your tutors, I should like to wish all our students here tonight the very best of luck as you go forward to meet new challenges and opportunities. We are all very proud to have played a part in what I am sure will be a successful future for all.
Congratulations
James ScottPrincipal & Chief Executive
Andrew GwynneAndrew Gwynne has had a long and eventful political career. Growing up in Denton, Andrew was educated at Egerton Park Community High School, Tameside College, North East Wales Institute and the University of Salford. Andrew became England’s youngest Councillor when he was elected as Councillor for Denton West in 1996. 9 years later, he became the youngest Labour MP in the 2005 Parliament. From 2007 to 2009 he served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the then Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, and in 2009 became PPS to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families.
In 2010 Andrew introduced the Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Act. This act prevented predatory funds from making exorbitant profits out of the debt of poor countries. Similar legislation has now been passed in Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man.
In 2016, Andrew was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet, and acted as a spokesperson for the Labour Party in national media appearances. In 2017 he was appointed as the Labour Party’s Co-National Campaign Coordinator and was labelled ‘Labour’s election guru’ by the
KEY NOTE SPEAKER
national press. Following the 2017 election, Gwynne became Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary, holding the post for three years until 2020.
Andrew retains several high-profile roles across Parliament. He sits on the powerful Home Affairs Select Committee and is Co-chair of the All-party parliamentary group on State Pension Inequality for Women. Andrew recently chaired Andy Burnham’s campaign for re-election as mayor of Greater Manchester, a campaign in which Burnham secured over 67% of votes in a landslide victory.
Andrew is passionate about local community and is Secretary of Friends of the Tame Valley – a group looking after the Tame Valley and surrounding areas. He is a keen gardener, and lives in Denton with his wife Allison and their grandson Lyle.
